part 2
Propagation part IX based on my experience
Hey Dave, they are beautiful. Great job. It has been quiet and I know as far as I am concerned I spent a full week with the carpenter and painter here repairing and painting the decks, and the bunk house. My SIL is now unemployed after 25 years at the same place, and he is home, so he keeps me busy watching him work. LOL.. We are getting ready to restore the very old barns and it is exciting. He has 6 weeks vacation before he may sign up for unemployment so I am hoping he can get the barns done.
I had a surprise visit from the state inspector yesterday and I PASSED FOR ANOTHER YEAR. I am still a certified NJ Nursery. LOL
Speaking of NJ.....we made the news today again with our crooked politicians and a few rabbies.........laundrying money and selling body parts. It took the FBI 10 years to get enough on them to arrest 29 of them this morning. Nothing surprises me anymore especially since I have lived here for the past 20 years.
Hope you all had a good day, mine is almost over. Rained all day and I was miserable since I had alot to do. Will talk soon. JB Hugs and Hi to all.
Dave, your new flowers are beautiful. I wish my Red Cherry Rudbeckias that I just planted would bloom and I would post pictures of them.
Well, my dog has dug the new hostas up 3 times so far. I finally put chairs over them so hopefully she won't do it again.
JB, isn't it wonderful to get stuff like that done? Also, nice to pass the surprise inspection!! Good for you!!
Yes, we heard about your news. Yuck!!
Jeanette
I syour puppy just digging or chewing also? if he/she is chewing You might try some red pepper sauce on the leaves. I had a vet suggest that and it helps.
I got spoiled last week with some cooler temps and now we are back into the dog days of summer. and its going to rain tomorrow or tonight. inner alarm is going off.
Dave
Dave, she isn't a puppy and she isn't chewing the plants. She is an older dog, and really isn't digging up the plants on purpose. She is trying to get into the loose moist soil to get cooler.
We are getting into our hottest part of the summer now. High 90s and you are getting cooler. I wonder if you will get ours next? What direction does your weather come from? We are having the heat lightning now. We have the thunder and lightning with no moisture. Very dangerous in these forests. Already the wildfires are starting.
Jeanette
Wow Jeanette, that heat lightening is nasty. We are to be 90 deg. today. We get our weather from everywhere...when anyone is finished with weather, they just send it to NJ.
There is no way to tell what tomorrow will bring unless you see which way the wind is blowing when you wake up.
Take care of that pupper of yours. My neighbor has the same problem, there are holes all over the yard when it gets hot. I love dogs. Mine is 11 and a real pain in the butt spoiled Jack Russell. My best buddy. He even lays outside the door when I shower. That is a true friend. LOL. Not when you fall over him when you are soaking wet. Especially as old as I am, I could break something.
I Better get with it, the warm temps are coming. Must go open the doors to the GH. If I leave them open at night the groundhogs come in and visit my plants. I have traped two of them so far. Hugs and have a good day. JB
Good morning to everyone:
JB: ground hog stew???? Your description of the weather there reminds me of a joke we had going in the 80's right after the oil went bust. Last one out of oklahoma please turn off the lights....LOL
I spotted a visitor last night on my echinacea's...a baby praying mantis. I always welcome their visits. even though they might eat a few benificials I know they well eat a ton on non benificials. I always like my lat evening and early morning strolls in the garden. I get to see some neat stuff. Fresh daylilies in the am and a few visitors in the pm. I was feeling a bit down yesterday but I seem to be doing a bit better today. I hope everyone stays cool. Dave
Dave, yesterday was one of those days for me also. I felt miserable and could not figure out why, I felt sick in the stomach, dizzy, and just tired. So, I got up and went out on the tractor and mowed grass for two hours. Still felt crappy so I showered and ate a light salad. Went to bed and this morning the first thing I did was go have my glasses adjusted. THAT DID IT. I only have one eye that I can see out of and if my glasses get out of wack, it thows off my vision and I feel lousy all over from looking out the wrong part of the glasses. Guess that was it. I feel fine and now am going to wash the dog. Poor dog. He loves it and it is going to be hot today so he will get it for sure. Hugs to all. JB
Hi Everyone, I thought I would check in and see how everyone is. I should be back next week.
Linda
I think everyone is just battling the weather Linda. One way or the other. Jeanette
The heat is here NOW. I understand we are fortunate to have only 89 to 90 deg. when many of you are way over that. How in the world do you ever stand it. I just had a customer, let me say, a looker....this guy comes about every other week to see what I do not have. He constantly asks for things I do not raise. The jerk, I have told him over and over I do not do what he wants, yet he comes back. Coffee cup in hand, he has to be 70 plus and has nothing else to do. I wish I could just tell him to stay away, but you know how that is. He was all sorts of succulents, which of course I do not have. I show him the jasmine in full bloom and he wants a stupid cactus. Oh well, I realize succulents are not
stupid but I grow plants in my greenhouse that are compatible to the kind of care I give. I water them all at the same time, feed, you know the drill. Well, I have had my say now and thanks for listening. Have a good day and Hugs. JB
LOL, sorry JB, but sometime he might surprise you. I think he really just likes you. You are lucky he didn't bring the coffee pot and an extra cup for you.
Yes, it is hot during the day and stormy at night. I sleep thru it, but the little dog just goes crazy and keeps my housemate up all night. She is blind so I suppose it is twice as bad for her with the loud noise of the thunder.
I guess as long as we don't have the forest fires we can put up with the rest.
Jeanette
Hey Jnette, I thought the old fool might be just flirting until I see his wife sitting in the car. Hmmmmm......oh well, he doesn't look like he could afford my habit anyhow. The Tropicals that is. (giggling). If all he has ever spent here is $3. Cheap s***. Oops, sorry.
Anyhow, I am so sorry your puppy hates storms. I had one that did that and I used to have to give him valium from the vet. He would get sick from the fright. Leave it to me to have a nutty dog. Well, he died and the one I have now you could blast the house apart and he would not wake up. But, if a skunk is outside, he is up and beating the door down. Go figure.
Look what I have in my garden, I got the seeds from a dear friend. Now I need to know how to get the seeds out of those things. Any suggestions.
I will keep praying for your safety from those fires. They are so nasty and frightening. God Bless. JB
JB, what is that?? How come it is blooming where the (fruit?) comes out? Is it going to get another one right there? It looks like an egg. Is it an egg plant? Is it a purple one? Shows how dumb I am. lol
Jeanette
Well sorry to be gone so long. 2 1/2 weeks ago I had another persons job dumped on top of my regular work, now when I come home I'm so brain tried that I can't do anything.....not even garden or get on the computer. Plus just found out last week, I'm going to be a Grandmother (1st one) and I've been all over town trying to find material to get a quilt made by Feb. Then I find out we are moving the baby shower up to the end of August as my son/ daughter in law would like to have it when they go back to Baltimore for their cruse. As once my son leaves for Iraq in September she doesn't want to travel anywhere.... so I'm a scrambling around just like a grandmother....LOL
I'll be back later to get caught up on what has been going on with everyone. Hope those of you in the heat and doing ok and incase anyone is sick I pray for a fast recovery....
Later gang.
Janet
Congratulations Janet!!! That is so neat. You will love it to death. Get things caught up so you can relax and enjoy.
Jeanette
Well it looks like it has been awhile since anyone has been on here. Where's everyone at?
This is for anyone that might be able to help me. I have a stupid ground cover that is trying to take over my flower beds and ( I didn't Plant it either) I have puled and pulled trying to get rid of it and It just keeps coming back. It is very easy to pulled it out by the roots but apparently I am not getting it all. I need to know what I can use to get rid of it and not harm my flowers.
Please help !
Why not try RoundUP? That kills weeds here. JB
Yeah but it also kills flowers.
Have you found the source? I had trouble with an ivy, and it got much better when the main source was dug out.
It came from the neighbor.
Well I have no idea where this came from as we aren't close to any one and it actually started under our deck It looks like the trailing lobelia and I have never had any of it so? It has little blue flowers on it when it blooms, and it is pretty but I don't like it taking over my flower beds.I have pulled and pulled it out to no avail. It grows back so fast I can't keep up with it. Does anyone know what the Pros use to get rid of this kind of thing? There has to be something out there that will work with out hurting the flowers.
I don't know. Now, I have Sweet Woodruff that I planted several years ago and it is awful stuff. It even grows up my rose bushes. That is the problem. I have used Roundup on it 2 different years but, can't get too close to the plants I don't want to lose like my roses.
I know what you mean. If you find out, let me know.
Jeanette
Well round up is really out of the question for me. The beds I have are jam packed and the stupid stuff has just grown thru out all of them and there wouldn't be any way I could get close enough to even use it to get to it. A lot of what is in the beds is stuff that I am going to have to dig up and seperate this fall so I just might leave it all out and spray and put stuff down to make sure I don't have it next year ,but it is just making everything so ugly right now,
Howdy: Sorry been dog sitting for my parents. Just getting back into the swing of things.
Ok with every chemical I try to say this first and formost read the label all of it, and yes even I read the label... its like getting directions. I never understood the avoiding of asking directions. Of course it does not always happen with me as I like a bit of excitement and exploration.
Also wash your hands and arms really well after using any chemical. Do not eat or drink while handeling chemicals and a mask for fumes may be needed. I don't use one but its also a bit reckless of me not to.
Ok weed controll. All plants fall into two catagories Monocot or dicot. It goes to the base of the plants growth habbit. Monocots are plants born with one seedleaf (thats how I remember it and I may be off a bit but a quick look into DG terms will straighten out any of my errors and for time sake I will skip the investagation for now) mostly the grass types and the needle forms of plant leaves (going off memory on the needle types and reserve the right to resend the coment) However in my research of tissue culture I have found out there are quite a few exceptions.
Dicots are of (born with 2 true leaves (seed leaf)) most of the broad leaf plants fall into the dicot catagory.
Weed controll that is close to desirable plants you will need to be careful. I have used an old cotton glove (99 cents at the home depot) soak it or dip your hand in round up while wearing the glove (of course wearing a rubber glove to avoid any absorbsion of the chemical). Wear the glove and wipe the weeds being careful not to hit the leaves of other plants. There are a lot of chemicals out there for weed controll. I tend to stick to the 2 I know nest. Round up and 2-4-D. Both have the long chemical name which I don't know and don't care to know.
Round up speeds the growth of dicots and causes the plant to wearitself out and die. basically grows too fast and cant keep up all its functions for growth.
2-4-D works best on broad leaf weeds or dicots if you will
When using weed killers you need to be aware of winds and overspray. wind obviously will carry the weed killer to area's. Overspray is the mist that travels on the wind and also is the settling of particles in the neighboring area's where you spray.
DO NOT GET ROUND UP ANYWHERE NEAR TOMATOES OR BALD CYPRESS (TAXODIUM DISICTUM) TREES.
As with most weed killers we need to use them when its not going to rain for a day or so. I know round up now has a 1 hour of no rain and it will work version. I like to give herbicides a day to soak in and work. The way they work is the leaves absorb the chemical. the chemical is absorbed into the plant and is carried throughout the plant causing it to die. Hot dry days help increase the effectivness of the herbicide. Some weeds are more difficult and require a stronger chemical which will need the advise of a mor knowledgable expert in herbicides. I have the most touble with mulberry trees. they grow wild here and are depositted everywhere. I try to get the seedlings before the tap root has time to go deep.
On bigger plants I will cut the plant to a short stump drill in the center and apply a stump killer . I watch for new growth and keep it devoid of leaves thus taking from it its photosynthisis ability. By removing the leaves the trunk and roots only have so much stored energy and should run out of energy (hopefully very quickly). If this does not work within a month I will reapply the stump killer as well as hit it with both round up and 2-4-d (excessive yes but it seems to work).
FF: I would try to trace the vine to its base as recomended earlier and apply herbicide at the point of origin. As its been a battle I would try to hit it very hard maybe even treating anywhere it has rooted.
Ok questions time. I hope this helps
Dave
FF: watch for regrowth from the roots. Reworking the bed is an excelent idea and will help. Do you have anything to trade from your bed???
Cant you just spray round up under your deck? Thats what I would do
Dave: where do you get 2-4-d? I've never heard of it but could use a good "killer"
thanks
bre
Well I finally found a place to call and ask and they bascially said the same thing that Dave has said to use round up and be very careful of applying it. They didn't how ever tell me how to apply but since Dave has told me now I can go to this application of it.
No I don't have much in the way of trades out of these beds as this is first year for them. I have some Monarda , Lilies, Rose bushes, that kind of thing. My one poor little rose bush had almost been smothered by this stuff and I do the best I can at trying to keep that crap pulled out , and you couldn't even see my Hosta that is in there. I did get a lot of it cleaned out this morning and at least you can find things now. It just grows so fast that I would almost be out there pulling 24/7 to keep it down.
I think the thing that puzzles me is that I have never had it b4 this year.
Thanks for telling me how to apply the roundup Dave. I have some so I will get out after the threat of rain goes away and try to get it done.
Howdy:
2-4-d is the chemical in a consentrate look for a broad leaf weed killer or a kills all plants. It should be listed. Its strange how a plant can be completely harmless in one part of the us and run wil in others. English ivy is a tough one here. Is your deck new? are you having a strange weather summer like I am? It might be that either its been dormant waiting for the right conditions to sprout or it might have been brought in by migratory birds or other animal.
Ihope this helps
Dave
