Last year, APX Logistics shipping service, had MOST of the Spring orders, then in the mid-part of March after many customers called in to see where their order was Spring Hill, called APX to see what was going on. They just closed up their entire business and left all the shipments sitting in a warehouse. Spring Hill PAID UPS to pick up the orders and get them delivered, this played havoc with the whole Spring season. Not only did customers get the orders late, Spring Hill had to replace almost every order and refund 10 times as much as usual in a given season. But the fact is they did this when it wasn't there total blame. So, if your decision was based on last Spring please be aware of the facts in the matter.

Small healthy plants with sturdy roots and stems -- for a great price. If I could find the same plant at a local nursery ON SALE, I'd go local. But the point is, I can't find these plants locally.

I shop for bargains and besides their $20 off $40 deals, I also found BOGO deals on the same order. Shipping is reasonable. The packaing was FABULOUS and I'll be reusing many of the plastics for my wintersowing projects. With their warranty, and the quality of plants (albeit small), I am very happy with my purchases. Watch for specials on the web, as you can often get a better price with a little patience.

They are going in the ground today, but had to stop for a minute and wanted to post a rating while everything was fresh in my mind.

When the prices are this low, the plants will be small. But healthy plants at these prices are a real bargain.

I have placed a total of 10 orders with them this year and have been pleased with each order. They did make a small error in one order -- sent 1 of something that should have been 2 of something. When I called there was no problem, they took my word for it and reshipped at no cost to me. I have had phenomenal success with their plants -- smallish plants at fabulous prices. And guarenteed to grow. I love the sales and discounts -- especially on a quality product that is backed up unconditionally.

Never order anything from this Spring Hill Nursery. I placed a $200+ order this spring and received plants I didn't order and didn't receive ones that I did order. Now, I've just received bleeding hearts that I ordered 4 months ago along with an invoice. When I called to explain that the order was four months late and I no longer wanted them, I was told I would have to pay to have them shipped back. I said the order was late I shouldn't have to pay to ship them back. They told me that these plants never ship in the spring and that I SHOULD have been told that when I ordered them. I wasn't told this or I would have cancelled the order. I ended up purchasing bleeding hearts from Michigan Bulb which did ship in the spring so the customer service person I talked to was either misinformed or lying. Either way, they refused to rectify the situation and now I have to dispute the charge to my credit card company. This is the WORST catalog company I have ever dealt with - I DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING FROM THIS COMPANY!!!!

I've ordered with Spring Hill for the past 7 years and have been pleased. Good packaging and no questions asked when I wanted replacements. Plants are small, but take off quickly. Through division and some TLC, I've had Coral Bells, Liatris, Coreopsis, Yarrow, Pinks and Astilbe for years now. I think plants that didn't do well were temperamental anyway (delphinium and blue clips campanula).

After asking for my information and promising replacements or refunds, they never respond back to you. Now that I am totally through with them. I read the comments regarding nurseries before I order from them. I've been using Spring Hill for years, and have yet to have a "horrible" experience. The biggest mistake they made is when I ordered 6 of their "Freedom Roses" and the sent me 40. They came way to early, the ground was still frozen and I ended up with a utility sink full of bareroot roses for a month. Some died, some I gave away, and I planted about 12. 3 of those died, the others are still growing and as indestructable as I have ever seen a plant to be. Yes, the plants are small, so is the price. I do have some casualties, maybe about 10%, but that's more related to Pensylvania clay and not enough organic matter in it than anything else. And I get about the same casualty rate from Bluestone and Wayside, my other 2 standbys.

If small plants and small prices bother you, order from White Flower Farm. I'd rather spend my money on soil amendments.

I ordered from Spring hill this March when I received their beautiful catalog and a hard to resist 50% off try us offer -with a cash back guarantee. I placed a $600 - which was then $300 - My dream tropical garden - Banana and Palm trees, Hardy hibiscus, fuchsia, black magic elephant ears, lilies, etc.! As was the case with others, I had shipping problems -I was given an expected delivery date - which came and went - no plants- the website said the plants had shipped - but the tracking - which was supposed to work - was non existent. I had paid a landscaper $500.00 to prepare and plant. Eventually I found out that the shipping co. that they used had gone out of business AFTER picking up my plants - they sat until they had UPS get them and another week later I received a partial order. I called the landscaper who graciously came after a full day of work (the day I had reserved for planting had long since passed). When we unpacked them - and we saw how small they were - a leaf or two - (a far cry from the pictures in the catalog- which I found out later are 3-4 years old)- he asked me if I still wanted to plant them or throw them away. I planted, and called them again about missing plants. The rest eventually did arrive - dead. I babied the little plants, especially the fuchsia, but they died. The bulbs - only one of the six lilies flowered, two of the twelve liatris. The plants that did live- hardy hibiscus - shipped bare root - turned out not to be the variety that I had ordered - crimson wonder - but white. After a month I called and requested my money back - boy did they try to convince me to let them replace the plants - I said that I had had enough. Finally they did refund my money. I went to Lowes Garden Store and bought new plants- They had the trees, elephant ears. They told me that fuchsia won't survive here - too dry - got Honeysuckle instead. I also got gardenia, sunpatiens. They have done great - even survived 105 heat and Texas sun. I won't make this mistake again!!

Have ordered twice from Spring Hill--fall '05 and spring '06. After the first, I'd've given a positive rating: my plants arrived healthy and well-packaged, all grew, seven of the nine TB irises bloomed quite well in their first spring season, as did two of the four SDB irises. *However*... the two SDB irises were a different variety from what I'd ordered, and it appears that at least one of the TB irises was substituted as well (I'd ordered nine clearly different TB irises, but two had identical flowers). Still, not too bad. My second order was slightly more disappointing: even though everything was alive, several of the plants had been pinched in their (extremely thorough) packaging. All but three of the 21 plants lived (and I blame myself for those that didn't, so I didn't seek a refund), but few have performed well--almost none of them flowered this year, and the delphiniums in particular have been disappointing. So overall I would have said "Positive Minus"... but I do have an expectation that what I order will be what I receive, which is what edged this over into "Neutral."

On another note: as has been observed, these people appear to be affiliated with Michigan Bulb (which mails many of the same plants, but in smaller pots and poorer condition), and are *definitely* associated with Breck's--my Breck's order this year arrived from Spring Hill's mailing address!

Using the one-half off coupon, I placed a large order in late winter, paid by check. My order did arrive in a timely fashion, by late April. Along with my order came an invoice for almost $100. According to the company, they only gave me credit for a $25 coupon. I called the company, and the representative said a supervisor would call me back; that never happened. I called again after I received another invoice. Again, I was told that a supervisor would call me; instead I received an e-mail from Lisa C. explaining that actually, it must be a website error ( I didn't order from the website) and that I would actually save more using the $25 coupon than the half-off coupon. Made no sense to me, let's do some math here, I spend $200, save $100, but no, I spend $200, save $25 - this is a better savings to me?
I let it go until the next invoice arrived stating that I would be charged late fees. I spent an hour of my time, gathering my original order form (always make copies), my original invoice, a copy of my catalog that clearly states one-half off, with the coupon being clipped, and I write a long letter to CS politely explaining the situation and providing my proof and also stating that I did not see the terms of credit in their catalog, and had not requested credit. I also explained that I did not intend to have my credit marred by this, and included my credit card number. If the company insisted on my making payment of these fraudulent charges, so be it.
My next step, after postings to every garden site known to me, is to dispute the payment on my credit card and file a complaint with the BBC. The BBC does not have a good track record of resolving disputes with this company. It is my opinion that this company has stolen from me.
As for quality, I have ordered from the company over the years and been satisfied, but not this year. None of my Lily of the Valleys came up, my Autumn Red Lily's are orange (Hunny is so pleased, we just dug up hundreds of orange ditch lilies!), my Tall Phlox Red are purple, the Red Miniauture Glads are pale lavender, the Gailardia was dead, the Red Pemstemon hasn't bloomed yet, but hey, the White Dragonflowers are white!
I will never again order from this company, I don't do business with thieves.

I've been a customer of Spring Hill since 1980's. Around 2000, they went bankrupt and reopened with new owners. I think they may have changed hands since then as well. Not only are they connected to Gardens Alive, they also seem affiliated with Gurneys, Michigan Bulb, and Brecks. I've continued to buy from Spring Hill (and Brecks), out of loyalty (and their lifetime guarantee). Unfortunately, it seems the plants have gotten smaller and poorer quality, and the prices higher, so even if they will be replaced (and in my experience, they have stood behind their guarantee) it has been more frustrating than some other companies (e.g. Wayside, Bluestone) that I've recently discovered. Their catalog doesn't change much over time, which means I've tried most of their plants. So, unfortunately, I can't recommend them the way I used to.

My experience with Spring Hill Nurseries began this year when I received their catalog -- their offer of half off on my first order piqued my interest. So even though I had previously decided last winter not to buy any more perennials from anywhere, I ordered several plant support hoops, McKana columbine, pink sorbet peony, handkerchief iris and...I think it was the Arctic Flame subzero rose.

My shipping dates changed a few times, which made me anxious about the whole deal...and when everything finally arrived, well, I wasn't exactly prepared for the "bare root" thing -- I mean, for the rose and peony it made some sense to me, and of course the iris...but the columbine!! I didn't hold out much hope for those poor ratty things.

Everything went into the ground and I'll admit I only half-heartedly watered the columbine -- I thought they were hopeless.

However let me say this: my rose has bloomed, my peony is growing AND all THREE of the columbine, while small, are doing well -- two of them have bloomed! The iris? Well, we shall see next season.

The plant hoops seem to be of a reasonable quality and were a great addition to my garden! I never thought much about hooping perennials, until I tried it. My Joe Pye, New England Aster, Delta Snow phlox, and meadowsweet have withstood some windy days here, when last year they would have had a case of the floppies.

Now that I know how Spring Hill ships their plants, I likely would order from them again -- I'm already looking at the ferns...

Ordered carpet phlox collection and deluxe minrose collection on May 28th from Houston, TX. After constantly checking upon the order and seeing the shipping date move back repeatedly, I finally emailed them on the June 5th and received an email on the 6th that my carpet phlox order was shipped that day and that my minature rose collection would be shipped a week later. I received the phlox order on the 14th of June and when I opened the box I saw ten dead phlox plants and two seriously stressed lime green phlox plants ( they were nicely packaged in enclosed plastic containers). I planted them anyways hoping that they would somehow miraculously revive but no such luck. Only one plant of the whole collection survived. I received my rose collection on the 16th of June also nicely packaged in bagged plastic containers that were labeled. Unfortunately, my earthquake, sherri ann and orange honey miniature roses had been subsituted with a purple chariot, judy fischer and dwarf king miniature rose plants. Plants were small and a some of the leaves and stems were yellow or brown. Miniature roses are pretty hardy so I went ahead and pruned off all the dead leaves and stems and planted them in some lovely soil. So far they are looking to be growing stronger.

Overall, my experience with springhill has been quite disappointing. I did email them about a refund on the phlox plants but ultimately had to call them to receive a response. They promptly refunded my money which is why I gave them a neutral rating. I don't think springhill is such a value after all the time that was wasted. The plants I ordered arrived either dead or very weak and straggly looking so make sure you have a great green thumb to revive them. In conclusion, a ten dollar plant that is heathly and lives for ten years in your garden is always a better value then a three dollar plant that dies within a week.

On the plus side, their packaging is done very well and their customer service folks are good and do not give you the runaround (especially in terms of issuing refunds). Took them over 2 months to ship the order. The communication was horrendous. They would ignore emails for weeks. THen respond with false promises. Then, entirely unprompted, another person from there would respond with a completely different answer than that given by the first person.

They unilaterally decided to simply cancel my order for certain items because "they didn't have them this year". Ummmm, yes, but then why did you take my order for them and give me an estimated delivery date for them??

It took having a major cow, and I mean a major cow, to get them to ship the plants. They did come in well packaged. Mostly in good shape. A couple dying. A couple were infested with some kind of nasty insects. But the rest looked healthy. And the plants were priced fairly.

But my gosh, what a hassle doing business with these guys. Root canals are more pleasant.

Life's too short to have it become this difficult to just buy your plants!

It's kind of too bad, because I just have this feeling that this place could actually do a good job if it felt like it.

In May I ordered several plants from Spring Hill that I have not been able to find at local nurseries. About three weeks after placing my order I received the first installment of my plants in relatively good shape. The variegated weigela does not look so good, and the health of the beauty of moscow lilac is suspect. I emailed the company, and they are sending replacements in October. I'm in zone 7, so that's just fine with me.

I understand the concerns about some of their shipping methods as the mock orange I ordered was a long, skinny stick with bare roots wrapped in wet newspaper and plastic. The same day it was received, I planted it in a container for temporary observation before placing it in its intended location. Within a week and a half, that little stick sprouted new leaves and has been moved to what will hopefully be its permanent home.

If anything does not perform as it should, I will tell them to send me a replacement, and I will keep repeating that process as long as it takes to get the quality plants they advertise. Although I am new to this, I have figured out that there are certain items which are better purchased at a local retailer or nursery. For special items, it may be better to try a mail order company. Try to be flexible and not have overly perfect expectations. If you need immediate satisfaction, mail order may not be for you.

I am giving them a lukewarm postive. I ordered three Kaleidoscope Hydrangea, two Dwarf Daylily collections and one Winner's Circle Daylily collection from a "send no money until your plants grow" type of promotion. The Hydrangea arrived in very large (for mail order) containers and they were in beautiful shape. All the daylilies (30 total) were individually bagged with a description on the bag. They took a little while to arrive, but as I was expecting them in the fall (proper planting time for my area and all) it ended up being a pleasant surprise to have them in the spring. Possibly seven or so of the daylily ended up not growing, but they are sending me replacements -no questions asked. The hydrangea initially erupted in fungus and came within an inch of their lives immediately after planting, so I treated them twice with Orthonex and am now seeing very healthy new growth.

They did start sending me bills immediately after receiving the plants though. The bills came often and were asking me to pay promptly, which was a misrepresentation of the inital offer. I called them and explained that I would not be paying (as per the offer) until I was sure my plants were going to grow. They also sent me a another "send no money now" promotion for reblooming Iris. I bit, ordering two collections, and got a notice stating I had exceeded my "credit limit" with the company and would not be getting the Irises. Oy.

By then I had already placed a paid order with them for some more plants:
3 royal Helleborus
1 pink Bleeding Heart
1 Lady Fern
3 Hardy Primrose
6 Japanese Iris

I have gotten all but the Helleborus, and I ordered so long ago I cannot even recall off the top of my head when that was. The plants did take a long time, but they were in much better condition than Michigan Bulb's plants (and I will be posting about them as well). I called to inquire about my plants, and they told me they were in transit, Helleborus included, but that was well over a week ago and still no dice.
What bothers me about that is that If they were shipped when they said they were, those plants have no chance of arriving here alive. (unless the carrier took them out of the box and has been watering them LOL) So either the rep lied to me and they were not in transit, or the mail lost them . hmmm....

Though Spring Hill costs more than Michigan Bulb, they do send much nicer plants. They are large and healthy. The shipping time positively stinks. That has to get fixed. THey also informed me that if I needed the Hydrangea replaced I would be out of luck until next year due to them being out of stock now. Annoying.

Thus the lukewarm positive. I had hoped for better service from this company, but after dealing with Michigan Bulb's pathetic excuses for plants I am actually sort of happy with Spring Hill.

Everything is relative I suppose. :)

I would use mail order only for plants you cannot find in a store. (and bare root plants stand up to their slow shipping practices better than potted plants, so keep that in mind)

The packaging was terrible I had to dig through the box to find the dead plants, great packaging job "Spring Hill". Looks like you hired four year kids to pack the boxes.

The only positive thing I have say about my order was the free samples of hand lotion, ha ha ha.

I am taking their catalog to a local nursery and I will buy exactly what was in the flower garden kits. And the great thing about this I will have the plants that day to plant, no waiting three months and they will be alive.

One more thing, thank you spring hill nursery for including the plant bed layouts in the catalog, this will make the planting much more easy.

I have had the garden spot prepared (mostly by my 20-something grandson, who spent three entire Saturdays preparing the area) since early April. Now they tell me that their last order will ship on Friday, June 16, which in this area, will be far too late, and if (by some miracle) any plants should arrive, none will probably survive unless I hover constantly.

I placed an order from Spring Hill Nursery's BEAUTIFUL catalogue in March - and then had to wait 10 weeks for my flowers to ship! I was told that spring flowers ship only once a year. Since the flowers arrived so late, I missed the entire blooming season on the spring flowers and the summer plants are nearly all roots - no plants at all, so it's not likely I'll have any flowers at all this year!

After waiting several weeks for plants to emerge from the soil, I found that nothing grew from 6 of the 24 roots. I called Spring Hill, since they "guarantee" their plants - only to find out that they are no longer shipping plants for the season. No longer shipping plants? It's only June 12th! Why do they keep sending me catalogues and email if they are no longer shipping. So, after determining there was nothing at all they can do for me this spring, summer or fall, I said please send the replacement flowers this spring - leaving bare spots in my garden for this year. They can't even put me on the list for next year! It is too "early" to place an order for next year! It is now my responsibility to call them in 6 months to remind them that they sent me dead plants and ask for replacements. Terrible.

I ordered from Spring Hill several forget-me-nots to use as ground cover I was a little leery, because of Spring Hill's feedback, but the plants were such a good deal I couldn't resist. Spring Hill sent the plants promptly and in very good condition. Ever since my forget-me-nots have been planted they have taken off like wildfire!

I have been very frustrated with Spring Hill's mode of conducting business. The best thing about this company is the catalog. Simply lovely and discriptive. However, I placed an order with them in March of last year and only received three shrubs, which were in very good shape if a little on the small side. I had to cancel the rest of my order due to the continued delays in shipping and the blatent refusal or ignorance as to the reasons for the delays. I was told that perhaps I should try ordering earlier since they shipped everything on a first come first serve basis. So I thought what the heck, the plants were nice I'll give it another try. I placed another order this year at the beginning of Feb. Only to have to go through the same nonsense again. I finally received part of my order today(6/10)That's over FOUR MONTHS of waiting and all of it was pathetic except the bareroot. I will say this, when I called to complain I was treated courteously and was issued a complete refund. I will not be ordering from them again. I simply don't have the time to wait for their plants to come, and then have to find replacements locally if they are in poor condition or dead. Not to mention my gardens looking barren while the company continually tells me that my order is "selected to print" .

I've ordered from them before so I know that their plants aren't that big. However, you can get some really good deals and if the plants grow I'm happy. I placed my order on the Web and used their $20 off and mainly ordered stuff that was on their 1 cent sale which is basically 2 for the price of 1.

I ordered on 4/21/06

24 poppy anemones
6 kniphofia
1 pincushion scabiosa collection (3 pink, 3 blue, 3 yellow, 3 white) - 12 plants
6 pink cornflowers
3 cloth of gold

The anemones came as bulbs which I planted inside. They sprouted and I transplanted them outside and they are doing well. The kniphofia came bare root. I planted them directly outside and they all sprouted and are growing. The cornflowers came bareroot and I planted them outside and they sprouted. The cloth of gold (goldenrod) and scabiosa both came as small plants. I planted them outside and they are doing well.

While their plants aren't as big as a lot of other places, their prices aren't very high either. I feel that I got a good deal for what I paid.

I have been buying from this company for about 20 years. This Spring I ordered a butterfly bush collection. The plants came geen and healthy in nice size square pots. For the small price I paid they looked good. I gave them each a good hole with dry peatmoss, manure and triple phospate followed by a generous drink. They have already doubled in size. I have since ordered a Pholx, Carnation & Poppy collection from them and look forward to their arrival. Remember to give your plants a million dollar hole when you palnt them with good nutrients and a good drink. :)

I also ordered a sub zero rose collection. Came a little to early to plant. Called customer service and they told me to soak the roots in a pail of water until they can be planted. Followed those directions and the roses actually started new growth while in the pail of water. planted them with lots of nutrients in the hole and they are thriving!

I just want to warn anyone ordering from their beautiful catalogue that your plants will not look like the photos when they arrive. All the plants I ordered took 8 days to ship. By the time they arrived they were mostly in pretty sad shape. And they were really, really small. For the prices I paid I expected larger plants. This was my first experience w/mail order plants - so I was a bit ignorant. I will never do mail order plants again - the cost was a little pricey but I thought it would be worth the convenience. Never again.

I placed a large order last August for fall plantings. However, plants were not received until mid to late October-- a real problem for Minnesota.

Plants were packaged well, but plant quality was variable at receipt. When I complained about plant quality, customer service initiated replacement without questions. Unfortunately the replacements arrived even later.

About half of the plants did not overwinter, I suspect largely due to the late planting. However, when I asked customer service for a refund for the plants that did not make it, my request was handled promptly, courteously, and without questions.

Because I know that they really do stand behind their plants, I will order from them again, though not for fall plantings.

This was my second year ordering from Spring Hill, and my second year being pleased. I had a plant die in my garden and wanted to replace it with a specific rose. It was late in season, so most places had stopped sellling roses or were completely sold out of the one I wanted. But, Spring Hill had it and it was on sale! I ordered and watched every day through the shipping tracker to see where it was at, and knew exactly when to expect it....today!

I was very surprised because it was a very large box, and all other bareroot roses I ordered from other places came small. This rose is not only green and healthy with an awesome root system, but it's very tall and has some new growth sprouting already. I was expecting it smaller like the others I have ordered and bought locally, but this is so much better quality...and I paid way less than I would have at other places for those smaller plants, local nurseries included!

Thank you once again Spring Hill! It is soaking now, and i'll update here as it starts to grow.

I have ordered every year from Spring Hill for about ten years and it is one of the few mail-order companies that has kept my business. Otherwise, I buy from local nurseries. The prices are very reasonable and they are very good about honoring their guarantee, which is an extremely generous one. Plus, they offer nice "collections" at a discount and if one plant out of the collection dies I have sometimes received two replacements for it because that is the way the plants are packaged.
True, the plants are smaller, but they catch up in the course of a year. Occasionally a plant has died in shipping, but that has been rare for me. A couple of times I found that the plant was not the one I ordered, when it bloomed. Once I had to wait two years to find this out, but they sent a replacement with no problem. For me, a rather laid-back gardener who doesn't mind a little readjustment with the timing of things, I know that my money is not at risk when I order from Spring Hill.

I only have one thing good to say about Springhill Nurseries, the plants that I have recieved have been healthy and of top quality.
I do not understand how a company takes the risk of selling product via mail order from catalog or e-mail order, who cannot keep up with product demand.
Second, to have orders made back in March or April and still not have product shipped by June.
Third, to have customer representitives that can not provide a straight answer on when the product is to ship.
On March 13, 06 I placed an order for 83 plants at a total of over $ 600.00, a second order of 7 plants on April 5, 06 for a total of 70.00. to date (June 4) I have recieved 13 of the 87 plants 2 of which arrived dead. According to the representitives I have another 12 that has been shipped. I had to cancel all the remaining do to hot weather and backorder with the exception of 7 plants that are considered exotic. On 6/04 I checked my order status and the 7 plants that were suppose to ship on 6/06 have been deleted from my account. I am outraged that the company is allowed to continue business in this manner. I spent over $1000.00 in soil ammendments and escavation in design of my yard around these plants to have 2/3 of them cancelled or deleted.
I have sent 9 of my co-workers to Springhill to order plants totalling over $ 2000.00 in plants, 6 of the nine have not recieved their fullorder either, making me look like the bad guy. I will never do business or recommend business to spring hill again, which is sad, because the plants are of top quality and I had planned on spending easily $ 300.00 in bulbs for spring and hundreds more for next season. When I called Springhill representitives on my order status not once did I ever recieve an answer that coincided with anothers. Best business is word of mouth, no business will becoming from this mouth.
