Who are your Garden Helpers Part 3!

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

We came from here:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/978278/

It seems like we all have helpers in the garden...some tame and some not. Here is a place to share your furry, featherd, slimy, scaled, or other type of garden helpers that help you enjoy your time in your garden.

This toad surprised me this morning. You can't tell by the picture, but he is about the size of a softball. He is in the same garden that I found a new snake earlier this year....I hope they get along!

Not related to this topic, but to the speed of your browser: I've been meaning to give up Internet Explorer and start using Firefox for some time now. I finally downloaded Foxfire last night and it's significantly faster. I've given up on Internet Explorer for good.

Loading Firefox is free and easy and doesn't require that you do anything other than click a few buttons. It only takes a few minutes if you have broadband (and my broadband is significantly slowerHere's the site: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

RJ.. Nice toad! My neighbor caught a frog again for me today. Here he is before his release from the bucket. He looks like he is smiling.

He is a good size about 4" and looks like he is getting plenty to eat!

He is so cute. I wish I could find my big ones from last year.

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Bea, I love that first pic...ear to ear grin! Nice froggy addition!

I was really excited...I mowed tonight and found another monster toad under my greenhouse bridge. He/she was there last year, but I hadn't seen it this year until tonight.

We had a road work party today, and then entire wolf pack was out running road patrol. When the big kids start to play, Phoenix gets picked up or she gets run over!

And my Mom came up with the perfect way to get Bonnie's winter coat out! It works great and Bonnie loves it! It only took 10 years for us to come up with it.......

Love the smiley frog Bea, he knows he's headed for a good home!!

RJ....that is one good looking toad!! Looks like the pack had a good time, I can just feel the quivers from Bonnie getting that amazing bit of grooming. And yes, it's easy to see Phoenix needs protecting for a while!! Great pictures.

RJ..loved the pic's of the all the dogs. The puppy is so cute. Hope she is adjusting to her new home.

Ahhh...the life of a cat. Tilly.. your Sassy is so cute! Feisty Kitty will be returning Thursday with my daughter for a semester break. In August Feisty will be living with me full time as my daughter has excepted a culinary internship at a very famous & fancy hotel on Jekyll Island GA. (Jekyll Island Club Hotel.) She gets the great opportunity & experience of a lifetime...and I get the cat! Yippie!

Just kidding I am very proud of my daughter for getting such a great internship and I do love the cat. Maybe if I can find a babysitter for the cat and dogs.. I can go visit Jekyll island. They have a Sea Turtle rescue center that looks like a great place to visit and take pictures of all the wonderful turtles that they are helping. Keep ya posted...

Tilly, That was an awesome set of pics! Sassy is such a cutie!

Bea, Will be excited to hear how the internship goes. It would be really cool to visit the Sea Turtle Rescue...hopefully you will be able to find a critter sitter! Have you guys figured out transportation for her yet? I can think of worse things than being stuck with Feisty...you guys seem to get along really well!

Had planned to post this yesterday, but forgot and this is as good a place as any. When we were putting up Mom's gazebo, I was surprised by a little critter...teeny tiny...hope he can hide from the dogs!

RJ. The sea turtle center is so neat. Hope to get there, if not my daughter will be going and even may volunter on her days off so hopefully she will take pictures to share. Here is a link to their web site. http://www.georgiaseaturtlecenter.org/

The executive chef she will be working under has told her that there will be plenty of people able to give her a lift to /from work. Sure hope that is correct. She may rent a bike to get around on off time.

Prettty snake.

Give Hugs to your daugter Kutos
Glad you get the cat, That would be a cool place see.

Love the snake

Bea.. That cat is such a pitiful tiny thing......

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

LOL..she has never missed a meal loves her friskies!! She has a lot of fur and she thinks she is big boned! LOL!

This was her in the dining room when she first came to live with us. She has since learned her manners. Kinda!

Bea,

Love that picture of Feisty! How in the world did she manage to gracefully position herself there without knocking at least something over? I can imagine that was one of the instances where a person is torn between moving the cat and grabbing the camera!

The sea turtle rescue looks like it would be a fantastic place to visit. If you do go, you will of course take your camera and bring us back LOTS of pictures?!?

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

For being as large as she is, she does get into places without to much damage. She did try to look out the kitchen window one day and knocked down several African violets and broke the pots. She has not been up in that window since!

I promise to take pictures if I make it to Jekyll Island. First I need to find a pet sitter and next some extra $$$. College tuition is real scary these days!

I may have posted this one before, but she is such a priss!

Feisty has arrived. She went for a quick stoll in the garden and went under a rose bush and started eating the leaves. Put a stop to that as I do not want them on my carpet later!!

Thumbnail by BeaHive
Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

She moved down the path and gave the DL's a sniff and then took a munch of those too! Naughty kitty! We spent the next 20 minutes picking the bark mulch out her fur before she ate that too!

What a charmer and she blends right into your decor.

Nice kitties Bea and Tills. Such pretty babies. I'm always amazed mine can get in between things without breaking everything.

Bea, congratulations to your daughter, that will be such an experience for her. The turtle center looks fascinating, hope you can manage to go.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Bea, Huge congrats to you and your daughter. What an adventure for her. I know what it's like to be the facilitating parent. It is so great when your kid is going to do something so extremely special and rewarding but it is a lot of logistics for everyone behind the scenes.

My daughter is taking a teaching break and spending the summer at the Chateau Touffou, the "Camp David" of France as the American liason and tour guide for visiting world leaders.
She lives in the castle shown below in the third window of the wing on the left that is capped by the St. George tower.

They have a nice garden :)

Wow Ginger. What a wonderful place to spend the summer. Lucky daughterl Are you able to go visit her? I would be on the first available flight!!.
Feel better as I finally got firm confirmation of the girls living arrangements and I booked their flight today. Yeah! They will have a wonderful experience in a beautiful place as well!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Yep.. have a ticket in hand.. France /Ireland.....

Ginger

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Please take lots of photos when you are there. Thats great!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

*Sigh*

This year I have a new Canon Rebel + a zillion $$ in lenses. I am trying to figure out if I want to lug it around everywhere or get a small pocket camera. I think I might have to do both.

On the Ireland part of the trip we are going to be staying at a B&B a mile away from Powerscourt Gardens in Ireland and able to walk there everyday....everytime I've gone on the tour bus you only get an hour there. It's not enough....

http://www.powerscourt.ie/gardens/gardens/

Then that means I need to bring my laptop......

I am going to be like that Nikon commercial.....Camera, lenses, passport & underwear.

Awesome, you two!!! What great opportunities for your kids!!

Sounds like some interesting traveling going on. My daughter left today for a 7 day trip up the coast of Alaska. They stop in Skagway and Juneau. She's been to Juneau before and to the Yukon Territory. She was very glad this year when school was out. She had a new school and a new grade to teach this year and it was a bump in her routine after 13 years at the same school.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Ohhhh.. ALASKA.. another place I want to go with my Camera, lenses & underwear

Hope everyone had a good Fourth! We watched the local neighborhood fireworks display which competes fairly welll with a "small town" showing. Everyone was thoroughly exhausted the day after, including the dogs. Doesn't look like Mocha will be doing a lot of deer chasing for a day or so does it?

Yeah.. I pretty much felt the same way.

Just a hopeful notice for anyone who needs a garden helper. This is Dennis a Jack Russell terrier who I have befriended in Valdez AK. He has had a tough 8 year life with an owner who chose to tie him to a post for 8 years rather than teach him the love relationship that can exist with a human. I have hiked with him every day I am there and he is loving and quiet. He has learned through me that people are friends and though not house broken he follows me everywhere I take him. We have hiked in trails where he stays with me closely and looks to see if I am near if he gets ahead. He is leash trained and after a few minutes relaxes to a quiet pace. He loves water, mud, flowers, chasing rodents in the mountains, seagulls on the beach, I have never seen him dig after Piekas (sp), his smile is enchanting when I show up. He is currently in an animal shelter and the long cage time gets to him. The pictures you see are moments of his joy with me in the AK wilderness. I have 2 dogs and a wife who lost her favorite cat to my last dog I brought home so I cannot take him. I will split the cost and bring him to Seattle airport if anyone wants his joy. This boy is full of laughter and love. Consider him. Steve

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Oh Steve, such a sad tail. I would love to. but I have no fence to keep him off the road. Mine are trained to stay in the yard. And I work, so have no time.
I hate people that do that.

So Sad

Eugene, OR

Good luck finding a suitable person Steve, and bless you for trying to help. Too much dog for me, he needs exercise. But I truly hope you find him a forever person. Hopefully one with no cats.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

Now there's a dog to tug at your heartstrings. I have no pet right now because we lost our dog to cancer at the end of May. I'm not sure I'm ready for another dog right away, though I have been thinking about this one since reading his story. I don't have a garage for an outdoor dog to live comfortably in the Winter. Would it be possible to house-train an older dog? We do have a big fenced yard. I'm not saying I can take him, but I am considering if it would be right fit for my family and for Dennis. It is hard to make such a decision without meeting him in person, to see if he likes our place, gets along with children, and all our personalities mesh. My last dog lived at my house off and on while still technically belonging to the neighbors for 2 years before they gave him to me, so I knew for sure he was good for us and we for him.
