Very nice, Allison. Thanks. I loved that cimicifuga - looks like you did too! And what was that funky yellow hand-looking thing that was hanging??? Nice hand modeling!

I had dirt under my fingernails...Allison made me dig in the herb garden to see if they buried the pots.
Thanks to Randy for letting me wipe my hands on his shirt.^_^

Wow! So much going on since last I posted 2 days ago. Can't keep up!

Maria, that first NOID iris is luscious! The second one looks like TBI Batik. I noticed you live in Rehoboth. Have you ever been to Tranquil Lake Nursery? That's one of my favorite places, especially during peak daylily season.

Thanks, Bill, Victor, Celeste and Shelly!

Yes, Bill, I do have quite a bit of color, but July is when this place really pops! Peak daylily bloom is just wonderful! And the new dry garden I put in last year is just full of color all summer, what with the gaillardias, coreopsis, salvias, rudbeckias, echinaceas, etc. All stuff that can handle dry, sunny conditions with little watering.

Victor, I'm just loving your Satomi. I need one! Oh, and the Will Goodwin and Josephine clems are mouth-watering! Nice bunch of annuals you have there. Your NOID fern looks like sensitive fern.

Shelly, you would not have to worry about persicaria Red Dragon spreading like the Japanese knotweed does. It has stayed in one clump since I got it about 3 or 4 years ago. It's very well-behaved! Sorry to hear about the storm damage to the flowers. Hate it when that happens! A town near us recently got 2" hail. I shudder to think of what that would have done to my hostas, especially. Oh, I love your agastache picture!

Maria, I whole-heartedly agree with you that a gardener's work is never done. Mine sure never gets done! LOL! I guess I would get bored if it did.

Robin, I love your Fourth Of July rose! I, too, hated school, though I wouldn't skip, as I would have felt too guilty about it and would have been in deep fear of getting caught. I liked some classes, but others just hated. What I disliked the most was how I got teased unmercifully by so many other students. That was tough for me. I would have loved to have skipped school and read a book all day and wander through woods and fields. Sounds like my kind of fun! You and I would have gotten on well.

Allison, I love your deep purple lupin, the close-up of the foxglove, and the walking onion shaped like a heart. Also love the big, pink peonies and the purple edged iris together. And the sparrows are darling! Nice pics from Wellsweep. Thanks for sharing. I'm jealous. I wanna go!!!!!

Boojum, I love the yellow baptisia. Nice big clump!

Patti, I love your Tiger Honey and Dreamlord TBI. Very nice! I think the variegated plant is silene.

Celeste, I do have that hot pink geranium, too. I just love it! You have gorgeous lupins, and the iris that smells like grape Koolaide looks fantastic! I love your iris bed.

Jo Anne, nice collage! Cool artsy fartsy stuff!

Okay, now to bed. Sooooo tired!

Pixie.... don't you just hate getting behind! It takes sooooo long to catch up on just a day! But fun if one has the time. Lovely Shots. I absolutely love those lupine that are purple, what kind are they? I love your version of the bonfire! I wish that I could have one like that, although I know that if I had one that size I'd catch the forest on fire.... Then I'd have one really, really, big bill!

Nice job with the collage Jo Ann. lovely art pieces too. I think that the term "tree earring" is great!

Robin.... I love that noid Iris!!!

Dahlia... you're so funny. Hopefully that hail didn't cause too much trouble. I am some very ratty looking flowers after this last weeks round of weather.

Victor... as per usual, I love Josephine. I've finally decided to face the truth that mine died this winter. I think that the deer ate it to death. :-( That Oso Easy strawberry crush is really pretty too. I've never heard of that series of roses. It sounds right for me since I don't do roses due to how prone they are to different ailments.

Daisy... very nice!

Thanks Karen! and thanks for the condolensces too! lol Here, persicaria red dragon and the other fancy ones do travel. Nothing like japanese knotweed, but still a nomadic character around some places. At least its a much prettier sight than it's larger cousin.

So, this is my current project. just to touch on the problems in this part of the yard, this is a brief run down of why it's a real pain:
1) the fool that put in the sprinkler system didn't put the lines in deep in enough. They range from 1" deep to 6". You know how easy it is to break a line that shallow with a shovel?? very. I've unknowingly tested pipes tencile strength many times.
2) the fool put all elbow joints in the lines going up instead of sideways. We'll never now why.
3)he put the sprinklers in along the tree line with the intent for them to water the Island (raised area on the left of the pic) and the sprinklers in the island to water the tree line.
4)the pipes for the septic drainfield run under there, he hit one of them with the ditchwitch and didn't tell anyone - I just discovered this when uncovering parts of the lines so that rotatilling could be done. And that finally solved the quandry of why that part of the yard was always soggy. That pipe hasn't been functional for almost 8 years now.

So.... all of that leads to this picture! there was grass there until just a couple of days ago.

Initially the project was just to get rid of the grass, raise, and make rock garden with some planters. Now it's: get rid of grass, find and fix all sprinkler pipes that had small cracks due to being too close to the surface, wait for the area to drain some so we can fix the broken septic pipe, fix that pipe, and rearrange the sprinkler system so that it's not sooo close to the surface. Then we can proceed with the rock garden and planters.

Pixie... your burn pile puts my little one to shame! lol. but, I would kill most anything there with a bonfire the size of yours!

love that clematis RC

edit -- oh yeah.. Randy went... and had a good time... I asked if he would go back another time and he said yes!

lol.... this place is only 10 years old. Actually, not quite, it was finished in late 1999. The sprinkler system was done in '02. The house is in good shape, the way that the sprinkler system was installed is what has caused most of the problems outside of the house. I didn't live here at the time, but I was doing most of the yard work. I didn't know for certain that it was all screwed up, I just knew that I'd never seen a system installed anything like this one before. I just kept saying to the owners "I don't like him, don't know why. I just don't." Now I know why. lol

Thanks Allison. It sounds as if you had fun!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

sounds like it's going to be a rough job RC!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Trust those instincts Shelly.
Too bad you had no say as to weather to fire him or not.
There are tons of people here who work for landsacpers who start their own businesses and have the worst work ethic's.
They are short sighted and often ruin the reputations of the Landscapers whe they use for reference.
I took a bid on taking out 8 spreading junipers and removing the roots and tiling in a yard of composted topsoil.
One guy saw a grayhaired old lady and kept adding things to the job.
He had no idea I had been dealing with contractors for 30 years.
I can tell when someone does the job on the side(he was a mailman, and could only work late days or Sat.) Had to rent the heavy equipment etc. and thought I would give him the job just because he was smooth and charming.
I learned , ages ago to pey a bit more and hire the pros.
He said I'd need 2 yards for the job and didnt need to remove the stumps.
Thats why he was trying to avoid renting anymore equipment.
PLUS,His bid was atrocious.
I settled for a local nursery(the third bid) and have hired them ever since.
They did the job I wanted and some extra, like coming with extra black edging and continuing past the edge of the space to include another garden around the corner.
He also gave me advise about the pitiful Vibernums that are dying.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

definitely muddy! I'll be much happier about it though once the ground dries enough to finish the tilling and digging. Right now all I can do is look at it and tell mother nature to please not rain for a couple of days! Although, unfortunately there's still plenty to be done in the other areas of the yard.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I agree with you completely Jo Ann! And yes, if only I knew then what I do now... He would've been history within just the first day or two. That sprinkler system has caused so many headaches over the past few years and is not user friendly, which I think was intentional so that we'd have to call him to come and fix it. Too bad that you had to learn the hard way as well. What a pain. Our two fools should get together and have to garden in the environment that they create!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I won't get started with our horror stories of our first retaining wall... and he was a big contractor.. you really do never know... the small contractor we hired after was way better fixing all his mistakes

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Alas there are far too many phonies out there.
I am lucky in that the neighbors are no fools and recomend good contractors.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Oh no... retaining wall failure, that's not good. Hopefully it wasn't holding up a large component of your yard. Yeah, actually the guy that put this system in was licensed. He usually had just one or two others with him on this project. The ones that i've had to hire to fix components of it in the past, haven't been licensed, but seemed to have much better common sense!
