DAILY PICS VOL #218

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Dirt, that Sisken was fortunate to have you around at the right time. Nice to see he's doing ok.
Would like to see one of those Tanager, someday.

beautiful tanager, Linth!

I had been hearing the scarlet...but now I am not....but I still look very carefully when I am out...still hoping!!!!!

I was out a bit earlier walking and the Barn Swallows seem to be coming along with me. It was so cool...I stopped and stood still and they would fly in and go over and around me...I could have easliy touch them. I wish there would have bee some way to get a photo. If they could just slow down a bit!! LOL

I got this VERY bad pic yesterday. I am out in the road and the swallows are on my porch!

nanny, Your so lucky to have Barn Swallows.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

love the barn swallows. I remember them dive-bombing the cat when I was a kid.

Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

On the same morning that I photographed the Summer Tanagers, I also saw a couple of male Blue Grosbeaks.

Somewhat unusual to find a Blue Grosbeak sitting high up on a power line tower.

Nice Trumpeter Swans, threegardeners.

This past weekend, I was walking a path around a local pond with woods on one side of the path. I heard these little voices coming from one of the trees (which tree, of course). I waited patiently to see if I could observe some movement.
Eventually, I saw a female Downy Woodpecker land on one of the trees. She had just come back to feed her young.
I ultimately used a flash to get these photos. Otherwise, it was way too dark for a 500mm lens.

Here she is coming back out of the small (very small) hole. I would have never noticed the hole if she had not returned.

Beautiful Swans 3g's. Congrats on the new bird!

Linth, That is adorable! So glad you saw it.

North Augusta, ON

Good catch on the Downy! They are hard, for me anyways.

Do you suppose, if I searched around that pond, those swans have young ones?

Marlton, NJ

I would have thought they would have had them with them but it never hurts to look. You may find another type of bird you haven't seen. Fingers Crossed!

North Augusta, ON

I'll take my boots there tomorrow! I almost had a Woodcock shot but the brakes on my car are so squealy he took off...I really do need to stop jamming on my brakes on busy roads...

Bella Vista, AR(Zone 6b)

This guy came 5 minutes after putting out the seed. Funny to watch on such a small feeder.

Nice!!

Marlton, NJ

Nice male Red-bellied Woodpecker Julie!!

Well I went to the bird store and got some "white stripe" sunflower seed along with some safflower. I'm hoping this will be enough to send the Grackles away. The white stripe seed is supposed to be too hard of a shell for them so we'll see. If this doesn't work then the seed feeders will come down till I'm sure their gone.
The suet will stay up.

Great swan pics threegardners!

Great catch with the Blue Grosbeak Linth!! We still see our male Rose-breasted in the evenings...so I assume they are nesting close by. Haven't seen the female for weeks tho.

Pelle, please let us know if that works..I am at my wits end with them scaring off all the other birds that we do want!!

Seems like we have a million Starling fledglings right now too!

We have a pair of Ronins that have hung around for weeks now...and once I started putting grapes out for the orioles & catbirds it was clear they had no intention of going anywhere! LOL

The Mrs. is out there waiting every day now!

She is really very elegant...for a robin that is!

Nice pics nanny!

We're having such dark overcast weather it is difficult to get a decent shot.

Here is a male Northern Cardinal that was a little closer than most.

Thanks for the tips on the grapes and Robins, Nanny. They really enjoy their grapes.
Pelle, I took down my big feeder today as well, because of the grackles. I was tired of being on the watch for them. I left the one with the cage over the plate for the smaller bird. But it's raining right now, and the water accumulates in it. Even with the holes I drill in it. So set a piece of the wired cage I had left, under it so it will drain.
TheGrackles even learn how to get seeds from these feeders. They jump on the perch and fly of, a few seeds drop out, from under the feeder, when it bounces from their jump. Suppose to be big birds and squirrel proof. Ha!

I too took down my feeder to clean, put up one of those so called squirrel proof cage feeders....hah, not!

I also noticed birds just don't come to new feeder location readily, but it takes them awhile to 'readjust' just like people relocating. lol

Burn, nice gold finches. I missed those colorful fellas around here. Though, Cardinals do keep my company usually. I learned today Orioles only migrate here in the winter (I learnt that while try to pick up a feeder at a nursery during off-season, lol), which means I already have missed them for the year! Pheooeeyy!!!

Nice pics burn and Lily!

Lily, I've seen it take up to 2 weeks for some birds to come to a new feeder. The House Finch are usually the first to try anything (just like in your pic).

Well so far so good with the new feed, the Grackles don't seem to like it at all. It's only been 20 minutes so I'll keep you posted.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Rodger that! ^_^

Earlier today when we had a few moments of sun the Turkey Vultures were gliding around pretty low.

This is not a very good shot but I like the way it shows the details in the feathers.

From a distance, I had no idea they're actually BIG birds seeing up close! Great shots Pelle.
