The last, I don't think that I've posted this one yet.
Garden Photos of '09.... #19
Thanks!
glad that patch of phlox is finally making it's way to the rocks
They definitely don't grow as fast as one would hope. But yours sure look good.
thanks... and no they really don't
Thanks, Shelly! I love your squirrel and the magnolia flower. What is that flower with the blue buds getting ready to open?
I have seen some absolutely gorgeous patches of phlox all over this year. Mine never look that good. Maybe my soil is too acidic? Don't know what ph they like.
Karen
Thanks everyone. I really enjoy these Azaleas this time of year. It's a fantastic show. I can't say I can take all the credit. Many of them were here when I arrived but I've added to them and tidied them up.
I am so excited to see this Iris. This also came with the house. When I arrived here, the gardens had been neglected for many years and were terribly overgrown. These Iris were planted along the foundation of the house and did not bloom. I lifted, divided and transplanted them. Last year, still no blooms. Now, they seem to be happy and almost every one will bloom. I ended up with about 15. May need to find new homes for some. Any ideas on what it might be? I may post it in the Iris Forum. IrisMa, any thoughts?
Karen, That Blood root is stunning.
Victor, where did you get your 'Golden Shadows' from? It seems to be sold out from a lot of places. Klehm's has it backordered until July. Also, do you buy JM's through mailorder. I want to get an 'Autumn Moon' and 'Aureum'. I'm nervous about someone else selecting them. Have you had good experiences?
Yellow Archangel 'Hermann's Pride' colony...
Wow, what a show, everyone!!! This is my first time back on this thread and it has exploded with gorgeous blooms. Congrats to you all for those great shots!!
Here's a shot of our lilacs in our anniversary present to ourselves from our mountains/waterfall trip on the way up. The vase is a Cash Family hand-painted vase that Hank fell in love with in a very pricey store that was in the town where all the Blue Ridge pottery was made. The Cash Family pottery was made in the 50s by a family of potters from the Blue Ridge factory who started their own business when the Blue Ridge (Southern Potters) factory closed. We met a man who worked in that factory for many years and his mother was one of the artists who hand-painted the Blue Ridge pieces. We found both the dilapidated Southern Potters building and the Cash Pottery buildings.
Welcome back Louise
What a cool vase.
The colour is fabulous in all your gardens!
Thank you, JoAnn, Jen and Dahlia!! We missed the blooms of the daffies and other spring bulbs. The early heat wave brought them before we arrived, but there's still lots to look forward to!!
Definitly a cool vase Louise!
Dyane... that chipmunk is sooo cute!
Wow - so many great shots, Karen, Shelly and Dyane!!
Dyane - got mine from Garden Crossings.
As for the JM's - mostly from mail order. Only one or two from a nursery. Wildwood Maples and Fairweather Gardens have always been good for me. Rarefind too. Bill likes Davidsan and Topiary Gardens.
Sorry, can't ID the 'historic' iris you have. Have you tried the Historic Iris Preservation Society site. they have a series of pictures on the left where you can scroll. That too has a limited group of pictures. I'm afraid that your plant is a common color for the early days.
karen, I forgot to mention that the thing with the blue buds getting ready to open is a delphinium. It's a bran-newbie in my yard, that's why it's soooo far ahead. Something in bud at the garden center was too tempting, and of course the price was right. It was a 4" container that was 1/2 off!!!
I have a question about gift shop Hydrangeas. My sister was given one
Can she plant it out side?
usually florist hydrangeas are either hydrangea mac. cvs. or Hydrangea serrata. both of which are hardy enough. This time of year, they should adapt to outside life ok. But, if you get one of those that they they've forced to bloom way out of their normal season (i.e. winter/early spring) it can be a challenge to get them adjusted to the outdoors. I think that it should be ok if she puts it outside now, she just needs to keep in mind that it's probably going to go downhill, aesthetically, really quickly. But, then it should came back pretty nicely.

O Victor they look nasty. The ant makes me think they are of the aphid fam. Your allium bud pic is outstanding.
Yep, that's what I was going to say as well. Aphids!! If you go to google imagines and search aphids, you'll see a lot of critters that have potential to be a match to yours. Although, yours aren't quite full grown yet I don't think.
Love the allium!
Thanks again, IrisMa. I may have found a match on Historic Iris Preservation Society site.

Thanks ladies - that was my suspicion. Have to call our my ladybugs!
Blast em with cold water from the hose. It knocks them off and most will die before they can get back up the plants.

Oh so many nice photos! Loved Patti's darker purple iris, Shelley, your photos are always nice---I also thought the photos of the squirrel & chipmunk were great---however! The squirrels are pulling up my iris plants, & eating the entire rhizome----they are leaving the tops out in the road, in the yard----I'm so PO'd---must get some rodent spray---also the clump of June blooming Oriental lilies that I have had for years failed to come up----chippy tunnels are nearby. Here is a peony with foliage and flowers like a tree peony, but it's herbaceous.
