Propagation: Propagation part VIII based on my experience

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

FF, sure wish you knew the name of it. It is beautiful. My sister gave me starts of a couple of her sedums but she cut down and took part of the roots. They are doing wonderful.

Jeanette

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Yes I just love this and I thought that might be all I've have to do, but since it isn't real big I just want to have more.... greedy person that I am...LOL

Well for sure on the trade, no problem with that. So should I take the cuttings from the ones that have no bloom?

Janet

thanks all for your help.

IN being warm.... we have another frost warning for tonight.... In again with the baskets.... Oh my goodness.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Janet: Yes its best to do you cuttings with out blooms. in the plants exsistence they usually like to bloom and produce seeds. without flowers they consentrate on producing roots and new growth.
Carolyn: I have had my good days and quite a few bad ones mixed in. I seem to be on course to complete what I hope to this season. We got to spend time with the grand babies a few weekends. We have added another adult to the household..yipeee....LOL
We did manage to get one of our new raised beds finished sunday....well ok almost finished...just need to mulch it. I will get a pic tomorrow and post it. so what have you been doing???
frosty..yuck... we finally got a dry day yesterday and today. we set a record 22 days in a row we had rain. I am wondering how much drought we will get this summer...
Have a great evening
Dave

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

I have a sedum that I just got tired of and pulled it up and threw it on my compost pile last fall and it laid there all winter with no protection and the stupid stuff is growing on the pile. That tells you how easy that stuff is to start and grow.

You sound like me Dave I have my bad days and then I have good ones. Some days are just ok LOL It's good to here you are getting some of what you want accomplished.

Carolyn

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Carolyn:

That is good to know..... although for you I'm sure it isn't a good thing... Here I would be glad to pay for postage if you want to send it my way???? LOL

Janet

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

I can send you some if you want it. It would cost me about 3.50 to send it . I have sent some to other people and they were small starts but these are big ones now. LOL I think I that would be about right.

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

flowerfantasy you have Dmail....LOL

Janet

Good morning to all:
yesterday was a sleep day. not sure why but every once and a while my body shuts down and sleeps all day. Its strange but I think its my bodies way of healing some what.
Todays activities are still up in the air. I have to get ready for the weekend. I am going to spend it with the folks while kim and her son go to denver to retrieve his belongings. its too long a trip over a short time that its best I stay close to the house.
Plants: I have noticed lots of sprouts in my trays in the greenhouse. it looks like everyone wants to sprout and come out and play. Not much else is going on. I did manage to get the front bed of hostas planted and have yet to get mulch down. Not much else going on. what is everyone upto today??? I will check back in later today
Dave

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

Well guess what!!!!!!! I have been asked to be one of the yards on the Miles City yard tour again. Don't know what they saw that they liked, most of the pots are not planted yet, but here I go again. Don't have much different this year than last, so hope they won't be disappointed. Wish I had found you guys sooner this year, I would have lots of different things to show and tell. Hope all is well with all of you.
Lee

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Good for you Lee. Pictures had better come our way.
Dave, I am convienced the weather is making me crazier. Today it was in the low 40's again. Up from mid 30's for two days. By the time I left for town for supplies it had gone up to 50s. When I came home less than 2 hours later, it was nearly 70. It is now almost 80. How in blazes can you stay well with this kind of temperature change. I am just exhausted working outside in this heat. I was in the greenhouse most of the day throwing out things that did not take, etc. What is there looks good, but I am getting low in Jasmine and I need to cut some more very soon. I just noticed the Wondering Jew has mealy bug again and I sold three of those on eBay last week and had sprayed them three times. I just sprayed them again. Where do they come from? I used to throw out the plants that harbored them....but, they are on most of them, except for the jasmine. Very interesting observation.
I am going to water the plants on the decks now and the brugs again. I swear they are like elephants...never seem to get enough water. Too high maintenance for me. I am not interested in watering twice a day if the temp gets warmer and the wind blows. I like to have a nap during the heat of the day . That must be my Spanish Grandmother coming out in me. LOL.
Have a good evening eveyone. Hey, look what is blooming outside my window on the North side of the house. Hugs. JB
There are six of these along the front of the house and they are just beautiful now. Fortunately they did not get hit with the frost.

Hi All: yes the weather is making us all batty. I am hopeing to get some auto watering set up so I can cut down my energy use on watering and more on other activities.
I was thinking about all the costs of trays and containers. it seems we need a more durable long lasting solution to use other than the plastic cans we all get.
I have seen a product called elle pots. its a paper based product that hold soil well allows air penatration and gas exchange. the only issue I see is the lack of durability I am not sure how long the pots hold up, but if you are like I am I have a bunch of things that have been in the same containers for a long time. Any one have any good suggestions????
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Good for you Lee! When is the big occasion?

JB, the rhodie is beautiful. Can imagine what 6 of them look like. we finally hit some nice warm weather and now tonight it is suppose to freeze. I had to go out and button up the fuchsias and bring one in the house. No room in the small portable greenhouse on the deck.

You know JB, I found that the brugs needed to be repotted when they wilted down like that. I think mine did the best when I had them planted in a holy pot inside a 19 gallon nursery tree pot. Glad I remembered that, I just might do that again this year. They really did best that year I did that. Our growing season is so short that they just get about to bloom when I have to either bring them in for the winter or take a chance on their freezing.

Well, got another long day tomorrow, have to go to the city and get some stain for the fellow who is building me a new deck.

Dave, I don't know about those pots. They aren't those terrible paper mache type pots are they? Those things suck the plants dry.

ttyl, you all, Jeanette

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Good morning all:
They may be what you are yalking about. I have no idea what they are made of it just sounded like a good idea. I will dig some more so we can discuss it more. If I might ask where did you come into contact with the "paper mache"? what were they growing in the paper mache pots?
I just thought it might be a good idea to discuss this issue

Dave

Good Thursday. What a hellofa day this had been. My dog got sick about midnight and by 4 a.m. he was vomiting and pooping and I was so sleepy. I got a hold of the vet and she is a friendabout 7:15 and the office was closed but her technicians were there in an hour. She was on her way to a doctor appointment, so she called them, sent me up immediately and he got some fluids because he was dehydrated and a shot of compazine to stop the vomiting. I must call them back about 1:30 to report his condition.
I would love to catch a nap but it is a beaitiful day and there is so much to do, plus wash the barn swallow crap off the truck. I was embarrassed to take that to the vet today. The one side is full of bird poop. As much as I love birds, b arn swallows really push my buttons. We have stuffed owls and balloons in the barns and still they nest and poop. WAAAAAAAAA! If it isn't one thing it is another. I have a question about the sex habits of barn swallows. If anyone knows anything about them, please email me privately. This is no joke. I am serious, I have seen them and it is not normal what happens during their mating. I need to look it up but I am not sure where to begin. LOL Especially not today.
Hugs to all. JB

Pawleys Island, SC

JBerger, I am sorry I can't help with the barn swallows, but I sure hope your puppy gets better soon. It must have eaten something. My dachsund bit a toad once and started foaming at the mouth. My then 4 year old started screaming, Mom... he's foaming at the mouth, Mom he's gonna die!!!!!!!!!!! It was awful, but hysterically funny at the same time. I knew the dog was ok, but my son was convinced he was terminal. LOL

It is cool and windy today, so it is a good day to do catch up work. I took my tiller in to be repaired and hopefully I will get it back in time to make a new garden bed early next week. I am expanding in the back yard now.

Congrats, Lee. I am real happy for you.
Gotta run, I am driving the "school bus" ( picking up friends kids) today. I'll check in later.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Jb: sorry to hear about the puppy. I hope he is doing better. Barnswallows...hmmm they eat sleep have babies and poop. I am not sure about the mating habits.
I am surprised you son did not say he was rabid.... foaming at the mouth is not a good thing. I bet he wont bite another toad. I have one that lives in my greenhouse. I also spotted a garder snake under a tray I moved. I am not a big fan of snakes but as long as I know its harmless I leave them be.
Dave

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

OH yech!!!!!!!!!!! snakes have no space anywhere around me. I am scared to death of them, even the harmless ones. I don't even like worms all that much, but at least they are slow. Got a few more plants out today, sunny and high 70. Jeanette, the big day is June 27. But now I need to get a little more bold with my flowers. They expect something different, and I really don't have much diff this year. But look out next year!!! Now that I have found you guys and DG who knows what they will see. I will post a couple of pics later if you really want. Dave your idea of potting some and selling would be a good idea except knowing myself, I wouldn't make a dime. Too easy to give away. See everyone later.
Lee

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

JB, I have barn swallows on both of my porches. They re-use the nests every year. I tried to hose one of them off of the ledge last year, it was a waste of water. Very well built. The very first year they were quite aggressive about protecting their nest, but since then they've been a lot shyer. They do eat flies, and that is something out here with horses and cows, so we now live in harmony.

And they are so pretty....

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Lee:

Several years back my husband and I were out in your neck of the wilderness... Tongue River Farm, Icelandic Sheep. My husband fell in love with the west, not so much me, although that area of MT was beautiful.

Wonderful news about being chosen again.

Well, had a small set back from my sinus surgery as there was so much pressure building that it was causes some vision problems and terrible headaches. Went in yesterday to the dr for the first post op visit, and he cleaned things out so I'm feeling much better, except all I could do today was just sleep. He has kept me off work until after the holiday so a few more days of rest before going back. Just wish I had the enegery and strength to be out in my yard....

night all.

Janet

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well Lee. You have a month. What kind of fertilizer do you use? Best get some out and get it working. How about your baskets? What kind of potting mix do you use? Do you use slow release fertilizer? polymers? Better get going lady. How about some fast growing little Marygolds? Can you think of anything else that would grow fast? And bloom.

Jeanette

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Janet, hoped that help. Nothing like a good night's sleep. See you in the morning.

Jeanette

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

GM all,
Got a question . If you have planted a bush, tree or what ever and it does absolutely nothing and you do a scratch test on it to see if it is still alive and it is, what could be wrong that it hasn't sent off new shoots or growth? Oh and was planted last fall.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Could be still establishing roots. And, don't you go thru a cold winter there? How long has your weather been warm enough for plants to want to grow? Even tho established plants are probably growing good I would say this one will be a little slower to kick in.

Is it a deciduous tree? I assume it must be an evergreen or you would have said it isn't getting leaves? Guess we need to know the name of it or something more. At least I would.

Jeanette

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Janet: sory to hear about the post op difficulties. you are in my prayers.

Carolyn: I would need to know the plant. some plants grow extreamly slow others are so fast its not funny. I do agree with jeanette in that its most likely putting roots down. also the weather will play a lot on new growth. Roots tend to seek out new water sources and with all the rain we have had all over you might not see new growth untill later in the spring or early summer. also have you put down a slow release fertilizer? I would think about doing that as I think (key word think) the rain is done for the spring.
The thing is when there is an over abundence of water the root system does not reach for water and therefore it does not expand the root system and does not make the plant need to reach for moisture. I hope this makes sense.
Dave

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Well actually I have 2 different ones that have done this. 2 are varigated wegelia and one already has put forth new growth and the other one is just setting there and then one is an evergreen as jnette said. It is a white pine.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

FF, still not sure from your post whether it is the white pine or a/and a wegelia that you are concerned with. Sounds like one of each? I thought the weigelia was a fairly easy one, meaning it should be putting out leaves. If it was the pine, I am not real knowledgeable about them, but thinking it might take a full season. The fact that it has not died is a good sign.

I don't think the pines have a long tap root so it could still be putting out feeder roots to stableize itself. Almost need a horticulturist for that one.

Jeanette

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

It is both of them Jnette. One of eack. Like I said one of the wegleas is sending out new shoots and then the other one isn't. I just ahd a problem with why one isn't and the other is. and the trees I planted last fall. Just curious.

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

Jeanette
Miracle grow moisture potting soil Miracle grow more bloom, and regular fert. No slow release at this time, haven't played with it. All pots are planted, not showing much bloom yet, but remember the petunia's were slow to start. We have 70 and above in temps now, so all should take off soon.(please please please) I dislike marigolds with a passion. Too easy to grow and they don't have a pleasant smell. Would rather not have any scent at all. The hibiscus are about 8" tall so they should be just about ready to bloom in a month. Have some new ones that were in my newbie pkg, so we shall see. Dahalia's have tiny little flower buds. Grasses are coming along, too. Next year I will be more prepared. Didn't think they would award the tour twice to the same yard. So much for thinking. It is a Senior thing you know. That is if Mr S will allow me to garden again. He has set up residency and I think I need to quit feeding him. DH says starve him before I shoot him. Won't tell you what words he uses. hehehe. Have a great weekend all of you. You know what I will be doing.
Lee ps Janet, you get better, thats orders from me!!!!!!

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Hesssss baaaaack... lol
weigelia is fairly easy to grow and should start bouncing out big time. very easy to root but you need to check the veriety to make sure there is no patent on it. White pine - pinus stobus does put on a heavy tap root and will take a bit to get established. try not to over water him as you want him to reach for moisture.
I had a fabulous weekend. lots of rest and relaxation with some gardening inbetween. I helped my folks set up a micro irrigation for their tomatoes and the flower bed on the end of the trailer. We also visited a local greenhouse where they were selling plugs for $2 each and calling them pull ups. overgrown coleus and a new sweet potatoe vine I have not seen before. it is white with a light green color and a pink cast or hue to the leaves. Also got 2 different verbenias I hope will be perrienial. one is homestead and the other is a guess what red. they had burgs coming out there ears and a bunch were varigated with no bloom on them.
Not the most organized business. they had 3 greenhouses running air and electric fans that should have been closed off and condensed to the rest of the other houses. They also had a yellow torrinia with purple spots on the outer flower. It looked like torrenia with the wishbone inside the flower.
I hope everyone had a great weekend.
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dave, sounds like you had a great weekend. Always fun to see other plants.

Jeanette

Hello everyone, I have been among the missing nursing a very sick dog, I have him home on a IV drip instead of the hospital because he has such separation anxiety it would all but kill him to be away from me for three days. I sat and counted drips all weekend, and prayed. He is better, far from perfect but getting close. I swear it was the reaction of the Intercept I gave him on May 4th for heartworm.
He started getting these spells of vomiting and diahrrea the day after I gave it to him. This went on weekly, like every Thursday he would do it for three days. I kept taking him to the vet for fluids in the skin and that did not work. My vet is a friend and she said keep him home, crated and I gave him his meds by injection (I can do that believe it or not LOL) and kept the IV going until yesterday. I slept beside his crate on the couch to be sure it dripped. That was my weekend.
I wanted to show you my latest Iris. I never remember seeing it before, it came up among the blue/purple and I can not help but wonder how it got there. It is a beautiful bloom and I am thrilled, but it being there is a mystery. LOL JB

Oh JB,
I am sorry to hear your puppy was sick. I know what you were feeling. I have 4 little dogs that I take no chances with. They are my kids now that the actual kids are grown and away from home. Hope he gets well soon.
flowerfantasy.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, your iris is lovely. So sorry about your dog. How is he doing today? What a pain to spend a long weekend like that. Oh well, at least you didn't leave him with the vet. That is ok for healthy young dogs.

Jeanette

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

JB: sorry to hear about your baby... I know they can be the greatest love we can have. I will pray for him.
Dave

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Thank you FF and Jnette for your concern. I just returned from the vet and she gave him an antibiotic and did more bloodwotk. If he has no further problems he will get his catheter out tomorrow. Yippee. He is good to return to normal life if all goes well. The bloodwork will show if his liver enzymes are elevated and if so, we have to start back on the med for that.
I want to show you another of my house babies. My Antherium. I have a pink one also that I tried to propagate and it did not work. I wish I could figure a way to make more of these , they are smaller flowers but they bloom all the time. Gotta run. Hugs, JB

Very pretty JB, glad your pup is on the road to recovery. It really is tough isn't it? My little blind dog has been on antibiotics and ear meds for 2 weeks now and it is not fun. A fight all the way. Now she does not trust either of us since we have to do her ears and make sure she gets the capsules.

Jeanette

Pawleys Island, SC

JB, I am so sorry your pup is so sick. I know how hard that is. I will keep him in my prayers. My little dachsund is paying the vet a visit tomorrow. he is scratching his skin raw from some type of allergy.
The Anthurium is gorgeous. I don't know how to propagate them other than by division of the root balls. I know that they will grow from seed, but that takes forever and seems harder to do.

I have been MIA this past week, and probably will be for another week. It is the last 2 weeks of school and we are finishing up things like graduation photos, class trips, videos for the 8th graders and all kinds of stuff that I didn't expect i would be doing. LOL. It is fun though.

I do have great news though, my clerodendron thomsonai that I thought was dead is finally coming out.

I will be checking in when I can and lurking when I get a chance.
Have a great week, Linda

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Howdy: Antherum is mostly done by tissue culture. I know there is a tc lab in florida. I will hunt it down tomorrow and share.
Dave

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

JB, hope all is better with your little one. I know I would be lost without my two internet adoptee's. Sounds like me when they get sick, right there with them, no bed is too small when they don't feel good. Tucked right up beside my tummy. I am sure all will be ok, and I will pray for him also. Hello to the rest, hope all is fine with you. Had to go to Billings today, found a little weeping Norway spruce. He was so crooked I just knew no one else would want him so into the car he came. and he giggled all the way home saying "I told the rest that I would find a home before they did" He didn't lie, there were still 6 or 7 straight arrows left when he crawled into the back seat. Just barely fit, course if he had been straight, not in a million years could we have accomodated him with a back yard of his own. Notthing else took my fancy tho. Talk to you all later.
Lee

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Lee great find... a twisty one is best when it comes to weeping forms of trees. Congrats on the find.
