Propagation: Propagation part VIII based on my experience

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, do you think we would have time for me to send you a netting "hood" to catch the seeds? I would love to have some. I have some netting that was sewn into a "bag" kinda and then with a draw string so you don't lose the seeds. However, the seeds need to be pollinated so you can't put it on too soon.

What do you think? Let me know 'cause I will have to dig to find them. They were made for this very purpose.

Jeanette

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Jeanette, I would be happy to do that for you. Send away. DMail me when you find them and I will give you my mailing address. There are some beauties.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Carolyn: You are so right about rotting. I do not know what I was thinking. I would think as long as the cukes are mature which I am sure they are I would dry the seed and then try some in a paper towel trial.
JB: I use my DW's knee high's to collect seed. It looks funny but it works for me.
Dave

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Jberger:

I might suggest try winter sowing the seeds in milk jugs, the cold is what they need to germate at the right time.

I would also love to have a few and would be happy to pay for them. Just let me know.

or maybe a trade on seeds.

Janet

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Ok, I will see if I can find them. That would be great. If I can't, maybe we could do as Dave said with the knee highs?

Jeanette

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

KNEE HIGHS.....HOLY COW, I can do that. When do I put them on the plant seed pods. Before they dry or after. My SIL will have me committed if he sees me putting my knee highs on the darn peony plants. LOL This should be fun. I will share them with you all as soon as I get the seeds, that is if I live that long. LOL. And, am not committed. JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, that would be wonderful!! I have looked high and low but could not find the larger ones which I am sure the peonies would need. So the knee highs would be great. LOL, does your SIL keep an eye on you? Please take pictures. Would love to have one of your SIL's face when she sees them. I would say to put them on after the petals have fallen. So, probably they will not be dry at that point but should have been pollinated?? You don't want to wait so long they start falling off.

That is my opinion. Anyone else think differently?

Jeanette

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

JB ,just make sure you have none of the petals in the KNEE HIGH :) as that will cause the seed pod to rot. And yes just as soon as the petals drop.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Howdy: Thats what I do. Once the pedals are gone. I use a bread twist tie. I forget where I came up with the idea but it was a duhhhh moment...lol
Yes I want pictures of the men in white coats chasing JB to get her in her "dinner coat" LOL

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL, that's not nice Dave. LOL, me too.

Jeanette

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Sorry JB just could not resist.... how is everyone doing this am? I am moving very slowly. the shoulder has kicked in. It sucks when the body starts to fall apart.
I did manage to plant 6 trays of seeds yesterday. I also listed several items on market place and had one order last night. I am hopeing to get some cuttings stuck today. The call before you dig guys sprayed my forsythia with orange paint.... I know its got bright flowers but thats rediculous.
Dave

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Why did you spray it with orange paint ? Oh well you just wanted it to look purty for everybody.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

O.K. Wise Guys, so I am going to have a new white jacket when the NJ people see what I am doing. This is Soprano country and crazies are not exactly welcome. LOL

I got up this morning with the headache from hell. I went to the Chiropractor and he did my sinus, neck, shoulder, butt and legs. I feel like a new person. Wow I just love going to him. I took him a beautiful Jasminum Sambac Maid of Orleans and he was like a little kid with it. He gave it water and put it in the window so everyone could see it. I love making peole happy.

I must go, we have a family membet in ICU in critical condition and kids (my son in laws father) never got home until this morning from the hospitals. I am taking care of the farm business, plus my own, plus the animals and making meals so they can eat and run.

I am hoping to get some hibiscus cutting planted and the seed pods covered today but they are predicting nasty storms this P.M. so I have not a clue what I will do next.

Oh yes., I must pay bills too. WAAAAAAAAA I think I will say to heck with it and go fishing. JB

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Hi funny carolyn har har har .....my thoughts exactly. why orange... oh well
Jb: could you pay some bills for me???? lol
Sorry for the fam member in icu i will pray for them.
I kind of feel as long as I do something in the forward motion that its been a good day. I cut my forsythia with the orange paint (the ^&%DFHGG) utility peoplesprayed it to mark where the underground lines are...duhhh its right next to the meters and junction boxes for everyone to come into the house. I managed to stick a tray of 50 mostly dwarf crepe myrtle. here is the pic of moma plant. I took cuttings from the 4" pots I have growing.
Shoulders acting up again and I have about a week to wait for the shot in the arm. The storm you are getting skirted us this morning and now its off to the north east.

Oh I know those utility people are worthless IMHO. I had a wild rose growing out by a utility pole and they came along and sprayed for weeds and killed it out . I could have sprayed them with the weed killer. I really have choice words for those people.

Pawleys Island, SC

HI Everyone, Hopefully I will be back full time early next week. I have been really nuts trying to get everything together for this graduation thing. All my jobs have been let slide........
Dave, I sure hope that shoulder feels better soon.
JB, I would love to see the looks on your SIL's face when she sees the knee hi's on your plants. LOL It would be one of those priceless moments.
Jnette and Dave, I have lantana in the propagator for you both. Hopefully it will be fully rooted next week. Hubby caught me sticking it and almost pulled the plug! lol He couldn't believe I wanted more... he wants to get rid of it. Anyway, I threatened his life and he agreed as long as I don't keep it, I can root as much as I like. LOL

Our days are at the point now of working outside only in the early morning and early evening. The middle parts of the day are just too hot and humid, ( or maybe I am more of a wimp than I used to be)

I have started cross pollinating my daylilies. It is a new experiment for me so wish me luck, I am hoping to get tons of seeds that I can share and sow. I just love growing daylilies. If anyone wants to trade seeds or pollen, dmail me.
Gotta run and go postal. Talk to you soon. Linda

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Wow, you guys are so newsy. Is that a word? Anyway, I love reading about what you all are doing.

JB, what is a Jasminum Sambac? What does the Sambac mean? My Black Elderberry is Sambucus I think. Do they have anything to do with each other?

You guys have such interesting plants. Can you grow the Hibiscus out doors where you are JB? I have a lot of seeds someone sent me that I can't grow outside and have no room for inside if you would like them.

Sure sorry about the relative in the ICU. Makes a lot of work for you too doesn't it?

Dave, I would opt for the orange paint if I had my choice. The TV installer on my satellite sprayed the top of my climbing rose with a weed killer. I cut the top out so it would quit dying.

Dave, that is a really nice Crepe Myrtle. I didn't know that is what they looked like. I thought they were a tree. I sent for some seeds I think they are called Little Chief or something like that. Now I will have to plant them. I really liked the picture you posted.

Linda, I am sure glad he didn't pull the plug on the lantanas. This winter I am going to really make a big effort in holding them over. I think they might even continue blooming in the winter if I give them enough light.

I wish I could help you out on the daylilies Linda. All of mine are ones that people gave me and are the pretty common ones. But they are nice, and they all bloomed last year, the same year they were planted in the spring. So they are a pretty tough cookie aren't they?

Jeanette

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Jeanette:
Crape myrtles come in numerous shapes and sizes. I prefer the dwarf ones. the top out at 2-3 feet. The large trees are nice but way too common. I am trying to build up my stock of the one I do have as well as my goal to get 2 or 3 other varieties of dwarf's
Linda: thank you so much for rooting them out for us. I am looking forward to getting them in. My plan is to get enough stock plants that can be maintained on the plant stand and to propagate from them for every years lantanna needs.
I have kind of changed my plans. I will worry about my stock plants over winter and try some TC then when it gets warm I will push forward to get seeds planted and grown up for the next years spring sales. Kind of a if its ment to be it will happen.

Hello Jeanette, With reference to your question about Jasminum or Jasmine, the Genus is Jasminum, the Species is SAMBAC, the cultivar is Maid of Orleans. If you want a better more complete answer I would guess you could look up specific questions on DGs information section. I am not good at that at all. I just know what I deal with and I learned by searching for the info. I am really not very smart when it comes to the lingo used in growing and propagating plants. When I get a new plant, I look it up on the internet so I can try and understand all the things about it. All I know about Elderberries is I think my Grandmother made wine from them. Sorry I am no help to you at all.

As for the Hibiscus, there are so many different varieties or species that I am not sure what you have. There is one that is grown here that is not the real tropical kind. The flowers are the size of small lunch plates, or saucers, and they are pink, white and white and red. The grow well here and if you cut them back when they are finished blooming, they will come up again the next year. I do not know the name of them, sorry. I had some at my other farm and they bloomed all summer and were great plants. I left them there and I would guess they are history now. LOL

I think anyone with an orange spraypaint can is a danger to society and plants. I think they should be shot on sight especially if they spray your plants. What jerks. They no doubt get a bonus for each plant they kill in a day. especially if the plant is near one of their utility poles. Here in NJ they would never survive not even one of those spraying spreees. LOL That is hard to say, spraying sprees...hmmmmmm I am going now. JB

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

you folks have been really busy,

between getting 5 viruses on the computer and having it back in the shop to now dealing with migraines. I knew I should have never gone back to work....LOL They keep the darn AC around 60 which is too cold even if I wasn't getting of the sinus surgery.

Sorry to hear about the sore should,
the illness in the family. I will pray for strenght for the family and you....
and the nerve of those workers spraying weed killer on y'alls plants. They need some stickes taken to their back sides...LOL

We have had rain (this is a good thing) for the last 3 days, which is good since I've not felt up to doing anything outside. tomorrow we are suppose to have a few days of sunshine and I hope to get outside (provided this head doesn't act up) and do some weeding and a little more planting.

Trying to get a start on an herb garden and some vegetables, but the collies aren't happy about me taking a corner of their yard for it....LOL it was the only way as to put them in another spot in the backyard would have been ringing the dinner bell for the deer. Will get some before and after pics to post later. night all

hitting the sack.

Janet

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Janet:
Have you tried planting some of the deer deterant plants? I read somewhere that if you plant food they don't like by the plants you want to keep they will go after an easie meal. I do not know how well it works but its worth a try.
I have a picture in my head where the deer are walking down the buffet line with their tray and picking out the plants they like for their meal ....lol
Oh yea ... I put a few things on matket place and I have recieved 2 orders. It was like wow that was fast.
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I will have to take a look Dave. Have you tried the classifieds on Dave's too? Jeanette

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Classifieds? hmm I will check it out. Dave

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Morning guys and gals, it is raining here today and hopefully I will get the rest of my paperwork done.
Want to do some planting of regular pussy willow cuttings after the rain today if possible. I only have about ten Jasminum left and I need to do cuttings on them soon or I will not have much to sell.
I have had two sales also Dave, but one was not a good one. I had to cancel it. Seems she ordered both from me and Amazon and I did not get back to her until the following morning. She placed the order in the evening when I had already closed for the night. So she cancelled, she said because it took me too long to respond. LOL. We did some checking and she signed in that night, made the purchase, and is not a member but then complained. I am hoping she does not try and tarnish my reputation because I think she was just ordering without knowing how it works. I guess I need to stay open 24/7. No more naps Dave, you got to be alert at all times. I was really upset at the time because it sounded like I was at fault, when in fact, I was not. I had invoiced her in less than 24 hours and she never got back to me for two days after that. Live and Learn. This is the lesson for today. Work hard my dear friends and stay happy and healthy. Hugs. JB

Jnette, Lantana and daylilies are both deer tolerant...

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dave, the classifieds are under "products & sources" same as marketplace.

JB, didn't you know this is the age of "instant gratification"?

Linda, I want to put them in pots on my deck so hopefully the deer won't have a chance at them. lol, It sounds like you plant yours out in the garden like shrubs. I might try that and they might do better. I WILL try that with a couple.

Gotta get busy, ttyl, Jeanette

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

And echinacea...
JB: I know about the inmature dweebs out there. its a shame you found this one the way you did. My first year of trading I sent out a huge box of some of my choice plants. They ignored me even tried to use the disability angle on me the fack was that they never planned to live up to their end of things.
I am curious if you can chat with the people who run this community? maybe they can help. I know its all buyer beware but just a thought.
I am sorry you got hit by an idiot.
Dave

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

sorry to hear that someone who isn't a member could do something that would hurt your rep. on here. Something to think about. Funny as I sent an inquiry on some items in the marketplace and it took both of the folks over a week to reply.

I have lots of other deer resident plants as where I live I would have no plants. every once in a while I sneak a few plants in that aren't and they do survive.

thanks

Janet

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I was not out any money or plants, just reputation and that to me was the most important. The DG people were very nice and told me to let them know if she puts up any negative feedback and they will certainly correct it. I gave them the times etc. of the first email and the reply from me, etc. It was certainly a good sale and good customer relations on my part but they reversed it and made it sound like they did not hear from me for days. I on the other hand had documented everything as I have learned to do and was able to tell them I cancelled the sale and ask them never to try and purchase from me again. If they do, then I will be ready. LOL JB

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

JB, documentation is the best thing a person can do for themselves as a seller or buyer. I buy on ebay quite alot and I keep every notice I get until I am satisfied with the transaction and that way if I don't get what I bought or visa versa I have the info right there to go to.
So sorry you had to go thru that but I guess it is a part of life for some to have to pull that crap.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I do agree about documentations. I got 2 new orders today. wow I am so surprised to see it really working for a change I started thinking I had b.o. or something.
Dave

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Oh Dave NOT YOU :) Surely.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Well Carolyn: unfortunately It does happen.
Dave

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

LOL I know , just pulling your leg. But you know what even if you had BO I don't think anyone on the computer would smell it. LOLOLO. I know I have a weird sense of humor.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Hi everyone! we are finally free! School is out for the summer, so until football practice begins, I have no more projects. You all will have to put up with me now. LOL
It is raining this after noon, so I am inside wishing I could be planting a few things. I cross pollinated about 15 different daylilies yesterday and I was just thrilled, then it rained really hard later in the day and I don't know whether my crosses were washed away.

BTW Dave, I thought b.o. was short for "born organized" LOL ( sorry, I just couldn't resist). Your pictures are gorgeous. I love purple cone flowers.

JB, sorry you had a "not so nice" buyer. It does make it hard to sell when you have someone treat you that way. i had a similar situation on ebay once.My experience though is that there have been far more good than bad and as soon as I can, I plan to start listing again, here and on ebay.

i will leave you all alone for right now, I think I will treat my self to a rainy afternoon nap. LOL
Linda

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Linda, I just must know how you pollinate daylillies. Do you buzz when you do it? Just being a wise guy, sorry. Seriously, how do you do it: I am really interested in knowing.

Today was one of those days in NJ too. Rain, Rain and more Rain. I am working on getting my DG journal up to date finally after a few years, LOL.

Here is a picture of my newest Mandevillia X amabillis 'Alice Dupont' . I just got it in April and I am thrilled it is blooming.
