Hi guys and gals, just a quick note to tell you Barney is back to almost normal. They took the cathater out and now he has something to be pittied for. LOL. He did nothing with the leg until she took it out now he is walking around and when he remembers it he lifts it up and looks sad. Oh God, what a dog. He is so spoiled. Thank you for your prayers and toughts. Hugs. JB
Propagation: Propagation part VIII based on my experience
Hi JB:
I think its funny how pets act so much like we do. Its like when you have a booboo. your going along and realize your suposed to hurt so if anyone is watching we go ouch ouch ouch, but if no one is watching we just merrily go about our tasks. I have caught my own pets doing the same thing. its so funny.
I am glad he is doing much better. I managed to get 200 cells stuck today as well as put in some ground cloth under my main area. So did anyone else manage to do any gardening???
I am hopeing to set up my bubbler this week. I am hopeful I will manage to make it work finally. any suggestions on what I should do first??? I find myself in uncharted waters... but hey whats the worst that can happen??? I loose some cuttings.
dave
JB How funny (strange) is this. Guess what one of my buddies' name is. You guessed it Barney. The other one if Fred. I am so glad your Barney is better. Poor little guys, can't tell us when they are feeling bad until we notice something wrong. Wish the good Lord had given them the power of speech, .....Well..... maybe I don't on second thought. hehe Yes, a little gardening today, but more watering than anything else. 80+ degrees and the planters dried out pretty fast. Later
Lee
Hi Lee: Yes I had that yesterday. hi in the 80's today was perfect upper 60's low 70's with a nice breeze and a bit of a mist this morning.
Fred and Barney...how KQQL .... have a great evening. I will be out tomorrow dr's and errands. I hope you have a cooler day tomorrow. I am so afraid we will have a scorcher this summer.its been way too wet this spring. we are over due for a long hot summer.... not that I'm wanting one. I will be a watering fool if it is.
Dave
Dave, We built the bubbler/aeroponic chamber according to plans on a blog. I don't remember if I found the link here or on another garden site. I like the way it works though and it was easy to set up. I need another one for the things I plan to root in early june. We'll see how far I get with that project though.
JB I am so happy your pup is better. Titus went to the vet today and his skin allergy/bacterial infection seems to be resistant to the antibiotics and medicines we have tried. Poor little guy has almost no skin left on his hind end. It is pittiful.
I didn't get to do any gardening today, went birthday shopping for my teenager. Tomorrow I will take portraits of his class to use in the graduation videos. Wish me luck, I haven't done any real photography work in quite a while. After next week, we will have a break until mid june and then it is into football camp. I can't believe they start so soon after school lets out.
Lee, I like the idea of God giving the dogs speech, but I have had a couple that I am sure had things to say that I didn't want to hear. LOL
I have a lab mutt now that tries to talk, he tries to say morning to my son. It is really funny. The dachsund just looks at you and pretends you are the alien in his world. All the cat has to do is look at 1 of the dogs and they stop anything they are doing to give her right of way. LOL she really is the Queen.
I just wanted to check in and see if everyone was ok. Talk to you soon. Linda
Sounds like you all, everybody, is good and well.
Jeanette
Morning, Thank you all so much for the moral support with Barney. I was really stressed with that IV, but I knew I could do it and the vet was on the phone every few hours, day and night, so I did good and Barndog is better. Than the Lord. But, the AC went out last night and now the man is here fixing that. I am soon going to have to rob a bank. Hmmm.
To top it off I have cages to clean and the cleaning lady is not coming today so I must do them myself. Not a happy camper am I. LOL. Talk later. Have a good day. JB
Linda, hope your little itchy one is doing better. That is so difficult to control. I bought a shampoo from Dr. Foster and Smith for itching and it really worked. My dog used to itch like crazy. Now he does not, have no clue why???????
Good morning to everyone.
I got a kit for christmas a couple of years back when I was still in the planning stages and had no idea on where I was headed and how to get there. I figuire I can give it a whirl now that temps have gone up. I am thinking I will give a try at a large group of different things to root out .
I know we discussed the use of hydrogen peroxide and other addatives. Has anyone tried the different mixes? What worked the best? what was pure hoakum? I am going to do forsythia (roots if you look at it funny), crepe myrtle, sky pencil holly, carolina yellow jasamine, begonia cane, wisteria and anything I can find to try out.
Have a great afternoon
Dave
Sounds like fun Dave. I do like the peroxide myself. Used it in my bubblers all the time and still use it when I water potted plants.
Since you guys are on the subject of shampoos, I took my little blind dog to the woman who does that kind of thing, and when I went to pick the dog up she told me NEVER to bring that dog back unless she was sedated first. So, then I tried a dry shampoo. She started losing patches of hair. Could that have been caused by the shampoo? I took her to the vet, a new vet, and she gave her some kind of moisture pads that Bob has been rubbing on them. She had a yeast infection too which she got antibiotics for. I guess some of this should work on the hair loss??? Good grief, maybe I should have insurance for her.
Sorry to mix this up with the plants Dave. Nice that you are so tolerant of us, but I won't do it again. LOL Have a good day.
Jeanette
Hi Jeanette:
Sorry bob is not doing well. I do not understand how an animal person can require such drastic measures just to give him a bath. IMO...
so whats on tap today??? errands for me... and oh yea the afternoon nap.... naps are good.
Dave
Naps are verrrrrrrrry good. Just did the fertilizer thing on everything, with the liquid Miracle Grow. hope all goes well, first year I have used it
I bought some last year lee and never used it. Maybe I will try it this year. Let me know how yours goes. Did you use the hose end sprayer? I am still planting petunias and tomato plants. I have soooooo many. But, my biggest problem is all of these appointments that are taking my time. Between me, Bob, and the animals. Cripes, I don't think I am going to get anything done.
Jeanette
Goooood Morning Campers:
Janette - I bought one of those last year and used my first jug last week. Its still up in the air on how I like it. i will probably switch to a hose injector.
An injector takes a high consentrate of solution and mixes the high concentrate into the water coming out the end of the hose. I am going for 200 ppm (Parts Per Million). Now a word of caution to anyone even thinking about doing this. It is very easy to over dose your plants and kill the plants quickly. fertilizer (soluable salt) in the dry state break down to a salt. If you have ever seen a white substance on your clay pots? thats salt build up from fertilizer. when you get a build up of salts the only way to deal with them is to flush (leach) all the fertilizer from the soil by watering several times with just plain water.
I am going to try to push the plants so I can get more growth out of them this year. Usually I would just let them grow as they want to but I want them to get big now.
Dave
Morning....big good news.....Barney had his first normal you know what this morning. I was so excited I yelled so loud he jumped. What a fuss over a pile of poop. Anyhow, Goodmorning all, and what a day, it is raining again.
I made my first sale on DG MarketPlace. The Jasmine are moving, great. Not too many left , but I need to cut soon. They just keep blooming.
Dave, how is your Maid of Orleans Jasmine? Is she blooming, growing, tell me. I need to know if the trip hurt her. I have a customer in California who wants one but I wanted toa be sure yours made the trip o.k. before I start to ship them bareroot. They are older now, in fact they should be in 6 inch pots in a week or two.
Yesterday was catchup day. I found mealy bug on my egg trees. So, outside they went. I swear, the spray and alcohol should kill the plants the way I use it to get rid of those darn bugs. Oh they are such creapy ugly little critters.
Speaking of bugs, those yellow bugs that look like fireflies but not pretty were all over the Iris yesterday, hundreds of them just hanging out on all the blooms, I went crazy , what are they? They have a kind of dull mustard back. I need to look them up. they must go. But the Itis is in the field, how do I keep them away the whole outside .....big net. LOL
Must a get busy and give Barney a bath. He smells since he was sick. Hugs. JB
Hi JB: the maid of orleans is doing well. I potted her up and she is in the greenhouse with the hostas. I am going to be rearranging today. I will pull the hostas out as well as the other well rooted plants outside.
I am sure she is not blooming because of the lower light she is in. I like to keep inbound plants in the GH to see if there are any issues I need to address. I would go ahead and ship to california. What are the restricions to dhip to california? I will hopefully have pics later today.
Dave
Hi Dave, The California restrictions are the same as anyone West of the Mississippi for me. Bareroot, or an additional inspection at the cost of $25.00. For one plant it is not worth that kind of money.Jb
Question for anyone who can answer.
I have hollyhocks growing and some of the leaves on them look like a filgree lace because something is chewing them up. I can't find anything on them and so I have no idea of what to use to spray them with. Sister is having the same problem with hers.
Hope someone has some ideas. Sis says she has sprayed hers with about everything that she thinks will work but to no avail.

Flowerfantasy -- Carolyn
Carolyn: Do you see a slimey or shiney trail?? if so slugs. My guess is earwigs or a hiding catterpillar. seven dust for the catterpillar and I will look up the earwig controll. I use a spreadable that works on fleas and ticks ...it has the added feature of controll of earwigs. earwigs are a redish colored creapy crawler with a forked tail. They love hostas.
Pic number 2 of the hosta bed
Dave, Not slugs. I haven't even seen slugs here on our place. The mite or what ever it was you called them is more likely but sevin doesn't work so it has to be something else. Every year I put hollyhocks out and this is what happens so I end up not having any the next year. I have a regular type of flower spray for pest control and it doesn't even get rid of what ever is eating them.
Carolyn
Oh Dave, they look great. What is that cute little green and white one to the left on picture number 4. I love the shape of the leaves and the markings.. do you have any of those to sell? JB Are we permitted to ask questions like that publicly or do I need to go privately to you? I apologize if I did something wrong.
Your hostas really look good Dave. Are they all the ones that were plugs in the shipment I got mine from? I have mine in pots and they aren't nearly as big as yours. Maybe I should have them directly in the ground??
Jeanette
Jnette,
I am not going to tell you to put them in the ground but I have found that if you put them in the ground they do much better. All of my hostas that I have gotten this year and quite a few of them were the TCs have grown like crazy after planting in the ground.
Carolyn
Carolyn-
I'm not sure what you mean by 'filagree lace', but are you sure they are not leafminers? They get in between the upper and lower leaf surface (obviously they are VERY small) and eat the chloraphyl out, leaving a squiggly little trail through the leaf. But, the actual leaf surface is still intact, just has a bunch of squiggles on it.. If that is your problem, you may have to use a systemic insecticide, as they are actually inside the leaf so probably a contact insecticide wouldn't work. Just a thought- Jill
avianut,
Just full of lacy type holes and they are big ones. If I put that systemic insecticide on them would it hurt my other plants? I have them in back of everything in my flower bed that has lilies, hostas and coral bells plus a few other things Plus I don't want to put anything down that will disturb the worms and there are a lot of them in this bed and do such a great job of keeping it aerated and nice. I have never had to do anything extra to the soil due to them. Nice lose but yet compact soil. Really easy to work up.
Carolyn
Thanks Carolyn, I will get them planted soon. ''
BTW, I didn't know that was leafminers that did that. That squiggly turns a brown, or transparent? Interesting. I have seen that I think on my brugs. Thanks for that too. LOL, learn something new every day on here.
You all have a nice weekend. Jeanette
Your welcome, Jnette. I have had hostas for the past 12 to 15 years and that is what I found best for me so. It should work well for you too.
Hi Everyone:
Jeanette: I have been collecting hostas for the past 2 years. I wish the tc batch were that big now. I will end up having to thin the heard so to speak, as the others will push each other out. Its going to be interesting to see who stays and who goes else where in the garden.
Carolyn: You will probably need to use a systemic to get rid of your critters. One way to check for earwigs is to tip over a rock or pot that has contact with the ground cement or lawn. they hide there in the daylight and come out at night. I use the broad spectrum disystron from home depot. Be real careful with this stuff. wear gloves and goggles if you use it and wash your hands after use. These are good to do with any chemical you use. I will try to get a pic of the critter as well as damage they do.
Dave
OK , I see waht I can find. Thanks for the help.
You usually water in systemic insecticide, as it works by being absorbed by the plant, then the bugs get poisoned when they chew on the leaves. I would just use it on the plants that really need it, but it shouldn't hurt any of your other plants anyway. Except of course do NOT use it on anything edible, as I said the plant absorbs the poison. (That probably sounds stupidly obvious, but I've heard of people getting sick that way)
wow a lot has happened this past week.
I would suggest to those who are owned by their four legged companions, this web site will offer you great insight about your companion. I have used these products for at least the past 13 years all with wonderful healing for my collies. www.naturalrearing.com Marina is very experienced and very helpful.
Glad to hear everyones companion is on the road to recovery. Scary thing when they are ill.
Lee what a great fine, that would have for sure been my choice also.
Dave love the new hosta bed.
Well I returned to work this week and the air conditioning was on full blast which didn't work well for my sinuses ouch... first pain I've had since my surgery. The funny thing is it has only been in the high 60's low 70's no need for air conditioning at all. but these folks have the A/C set on 60....
Had the computer crash from viruses and had it in the shop got it back yesterday.... oh my lost all of my e-mails from the past 2 years..... as well as all my web site bookmarks..... I'm hurting folks......LOL
glad to be back from home computer.
I've gotten a lot done in the yard this past week. Will post some pictures later tonight.
Just good to be back.
Janet
Another question for somebody. Does any one know how to save the seed from cucumbers for like the next years planting?
Thxks
Gosh Carolyn, cucumbers. Never gave them much thought. I'll bet you would let one get really big so the seeds would develop. LOL, how does that sound?? Then save them like squash seeds or any of those.
Jeanette
Good question:
I am not sure on that one either. Jeanette's answer sounds good. I would say some produce sterile seeds. I will look at my liabrary to see what I have. I quickly looked in parks "success with seeds" and all it says is that home harvested seeds may not be as viable and may produce varieties within the plants traits. Of course they sell "better" seeds...LOL
You might try letting one totally rot and then harvest seeds. also try letting one go on the vine. I think the long vine time would help produce better seeds.
Dave
Oh yea GOOD MORNIN
Well I just figured they have to get seed form somewhere and if I could save some from mine it would save me from having to buy next year and the ones I have now are hard to find. I have got to figure it out and I guess go surfing and see what I can find. Just thought maybe you all would know. I do know if you let them rot the seeds will rot too. I have seen that on cukes left on the vines when you were done for the season. Thank for the help anyway.
Speaking of seed. I have the old fashion peoney going into seed now. If someone can tell me what to do I will cut the seeds and send them to whomever whats them. I have no clue how to process seeds so they germinate. They are a beautiful redish almost fushia (is that how you spell it?) The pretty pinkish red color. LOL JB
JB, You want to leave the seed on the stem as long as possible but you will have to watch them closely as they will drop that seed quickly. Then gather the pods and let them dry a bit more and then you can pop the seed out and air them. Thats all I have ever did with them but I have never had any luck growing the seed. I know that they have to be stratisfied for so long too. Good Luck
Carolyn
These pods are just big and perfect. It seems sad to just let them go if someone can make them grow. LOL. I will just wait. They are still blooming and I am not cutting them anymore. JB
