Propagation: Propagation part VIII based on my experience

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

I agree, the only thing growing outside are the weeds. GH is really looking great, and hangers are right behind. Pain in the **** to bring in at night, but better than the alternative. Have a great day, and Sheryl, my daughter is 40 with a 1 year old so there is hope for you. Lee

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

LOL, Lee - that isn't a hope!!!!! I was kidding! Honest! It's not the first 9 months I would worry about, it would be the following 15 or so, while I hobble around trying to catch up with a toddler, grade=schooler then a teenager - uh uh!!! Not happenin'.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hello everyone , Mothers and all, I hope your day is great. I am waiting for dessert. The lobster was yummy and I came over to my side to check on my sick dog. I am just too old for all the noise of kids and parents and grandparents. God, I really love peace and quiet. That would be my biggest fear if I were an older parent. I had my kids in my 20's and that worked out great. I was 24 and 27 and that was old enough. I wonder how these older Mothers tolerate the whole process of growing up.

The sun was out today but the wind started up again and the gusts were very strong. I keep wondering if this is the way our weather is going to be from now on. I sure hope not.
Good night everyone. I am going to bed after dessert. I am tired. JB

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

Hope you had a lovely dessert, J B, sweet dreams!

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I spotted a sign in a sweetshop. all unattended children will be given lots of candy and .... a free puppy ......lol
I hope everyone had a great day
Dave

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

my day was wonderful. I spent the whole day 7:30 am to 8:45 pm out planting and enjoying my dogs. Our garden club had their plant sale fri and sat and it was the best so far in the history of the club as for our profit. Now we are set to get going on some community beautification and service projects.

I love it when a plan comes together so well.....LOL

We are due for frost tomorrow night.... when is this weather going to straighten out. The wind was so bad for our 2nd day of plant sales that we ended up closing early and talk about a wind burn on my face, my eyes were so swollen from the winds, which did nothing for my sinuses....ouch....

Night all, will be off for a while, Tuesday going in for sinus surgery, and don't know how soon I will feel up to looking at a computer screen... Having all four sinus cavities on both sides of my face roto routered out....

Janet

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

Dave

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Holy Cow! that must be painful. God Bless Janet and hugs and prayers coming your way.
Yesterday was a great day for me, too many kids and too much food,,so I ate my lobster, took my piece of blueberry pie home with me and walked to the other side of the house and shut the door. I love it when I can just shut it all out. LOL
I got a $100 gift certificate from Logees from my kids. I am so excited. I also got a hanging basket of impatience, cards, phone calls, just wonderful how nice everyone was.
I appreciate everything no matter how small. I am just happy I am remembered.
Today it is less windy and I went to the grocery store and chiropractor and until I got it all put away, ate lunch it is now almost 3 P.M. and I have plants to replant. I put th brugs out this morning and they are blowing around like crazy. They are so high maintenance I am not sure I want to keep growing them. I now have 10 babies and 1 stock plant. I started the 10 from seeds one of the ladies gave to me.I love the plants but I get frustrated when the leaves blow off or the bugs start to chew on them. We will see what happens.
Have a good day. JB

Pawleys Island, SC

Janet, I will definitely keep you in my prayers. I hope your surgery goes well.

Hi everyone, I didn't get to plant today. LOL I sometimes do a puppet ministry at the church and this is one of those weeks. We need to put the whole show together by friday morning. We set up the stage and went over the script this morning and then DH asked me to go to the beach. It was cloudy and thundering but the ocean was the prettiest color I have seen in a while. We walked for a couple of hours and now, I feel sunburned. LOL
I will probably plant until it gets dark tonight though. I still have a few summer bulbs that need desperately to get in pots.

JB do you by any chance have a coconut scented geranium, or an apple scented geranium. If you do, would you please send me a dmail. I have been looking for those 2 varieties for several years.

Need to get busy, I still have a little while to plant. Talk to you later, Linda

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Morning , Linda, I do not have either the coconut or apple scented but I will let you know if I come across them.
I have pack and ship some plants today. Ebay sales are steady and I am amazed. LOL
Will be back when I get everything in order here today.
I want to take some pictures of my pink lilac, yellow iris and peaony trees booms to share with you but that too must waklt until later. JB

Washington, IN(Zone 6a)

Does anyone on here know where I could find some lemon grass?

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Hi:
http://www.thompson-morgan.com/seeds1/product/958/1.html
I hope this is the one you are looking for. Also I spotted mexican feather grass at home depot last weekend.
I will be off and on today. its going to be one of those days. Dave

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

darn!!!! wish I was closer to HD. 150 miles away, can't settle in my mind that $2+ for gal of gas would merit a special trip :-} Oh well, sounds like a couple of more days of mid to low 30's at nite. Guess the babies will have to wait a little longer for new homes. Guess that's good for Mr. S. He needs his rest more than anything. Do you guys have a mother plant that you save just for cuttings? I have all these great starts from NCF and thought maybe that way I wouldn't have to order more next year, and could experiment with something new??? See you all Later, and Janet, you take it easy. Lee

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Lee, start thinking about how you are going to winter those over and be ready. I tried to do that last year and spider mites wiped them out before I even realized they were in the area.

Jeanette

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Hi Lee: I do use stock plants of the perrienial shrubs and plants I can have survive in the unheated gh. I lost all my hibiscus last year along with other plants I wanted to save. I got lucky with my gingers as the one I left in the gh had lots of nice eyes and I was lucky in that I managed to plit it up before I lost it all to cold and rot. a soil borne disease had set in and was working overtime. Its now sprouted and growing big time. If you do some perrienials the outside plants would make nice stock plants. I managed to start azaleas, foater's holly, yapon holly, dappled willow, dwarf crepe myrtle and forsythia. I am hopeing to root some of my yew's as well as some of my other new plants I am hopeful we end up planting.

Wanted to share this with everyone, hope you don't mind. Then Mr. S and I are going to nap. Haven't done this before, but here goes.......remember I am still learning and it is a Senior moment Lee

WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?????????????

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LEE!!! WAKE UP LEE!! QUICK! WHAT IS THAT?????

Jeanette

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

And, just who is Mr. S??

Jeanette

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

Gotcha!!!!! Don't know what kind of bug it is, but has wings and I don't want it to visit here. Would spend too much time catching photos and no planting. My luck, probably would land in my long hair and make a nest. Couldn't resist, thought it was very unique for probably a predator bug. Mr. S is my live-in companion who never seems to sleep, or at even rest. (sciatic nerve) DH wants to shoot him, but can't get up the courage. he he he. Dave knows exactly what I mean. Raining and cold today, say it only will get to the mid 30s for the next few. Probably for the best, maybe Mr. S will take pity on me when the sun comes back out and let me set a few of the babies. I did manage to get some of the beds ready before he came for his elongated visit tho, so there is hope yet. Later, Lee

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I must have missed something here. Or, I have a naughty mind. If Mr. S. is your live in companion, who in blazes is DH.....dear husband I assume? So he wants to shoot Mr. S.
Second thought, forget I asked.

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

He he Ha ha lol, JB, I finally got one under your radar. Mr. S, is my sciatic nerve. I have back problems, had surgery, and have a cronic sciatic pain that radiates down both of my legs, sometimes worse than others, and not as bad as Dave but similiar. I call that nerve my resident companion who never rests and seldom sleeps and poor hubby has to listen to me ooch and ouch day in and day out. Gets mad because I don't know when to quit, so end up making it more ititated and then I am down for several days. Stubborn ol fool that I am. Maybe instead of shooting I should have said get the knife out and get rid of him lol. I just wish you could have heard me, when I read your post. I am still laughing. Sorry it is at your expense, but then >>>>>> Lee

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Lee: you should submit that pic for the annual contest. I believe its either a praying mantis or a distant cousin. It has a good chance of winning. I think there are prizes.
Mr. S is a horrid visitor. I wish he was banished to the moon. come on summer...
Dave

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

Sorry Dave, not my picture, wish it was, I think it is worth a whole bunch. I agree praying mantis, or maybe one of those stick bugs--dont know if they have wings tho. Poor JB, I am still getting a kick out of your confusion. Told you Dave would know what it was about. Agree, the moon or beyond, should have sent him up with this last Hubble visit. AND LEFT HIM THERE!!!!!

Pawleys Island, SC

Lee, That is an unbelievable photo! I wouldn't know whether to run away screaming, or like you sit mesmerized with a camera. LOL

Jb. thanks for the lookout for the coconut and apple geranium. those to are my all time favorites. What are you selling on ebay? My sales were very slow this year. I think I need to grow some different stock.

Dave, I do have some lantana, I will email you.

I now have 6 avocados growing from our last guacamole batch. I don't know what in the world I wil do with all of them, but I couldn't resist sticking the seeds n the ground.
Gotta run, Helping with algebra tonight.
See you all tomorrow, Linda

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Linda, if you haven't sent my Confederate Rose out lets talk about Lantana too.

Jeanette

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Linda, I am not making any money on ebay because having a store with the low ticket items I have just does not pay. What it does do is give me a tax break and it helps me get rid of the plants. I have chosen to sell simple plants like airplane, christmas cactus, some begonias, jasmine, scented geraniums. It comes in spurts and like I said I am loosing money. My expenses are way more than my income. I just added 50 cents to my shipping and handling because the cost of the bubble stuff and tape have gone up. Boxes of course are free (some of them). I really am not sure how long I want to keep this up but I must get some of these plants out of the greenhouse so selling them this way is my best method. Do you have an ebay store? What is the name if you have it so I can see what you have.
I tried the market place here, but had no luck with it at all. I guess no one on this list wants the kind of plants I had. I do not do enough business here at the farm on plants to move enough of them. I give alot away.
Yesterday I sold a Jasmine, cactus and spider to people in NY and Maine. I have sent plants all over the US in the past year. JB

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I just found out that I have had an orchid-cactus ( Epiphyllum) all this time and never knew what the heck it was because I got it as a cutting and no name. Just a hunk of this ugly plant. I kept it and this is what I got yesterday.
Am I correct that it is in fact a orchid cactus? JB

I will be back later with the red peony tree and pink lilac. Must get moving here. Enjoy your morning and hopefully my beauties will help you enjoy your coffee. JB

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Good morning: Fantastic pics. Praying mantis does fly and they do bite humans so be careful if you see them. The last 2 years I have had the luck of seeing them on my plants. They have a huge appitite so I am always glad to see them.
I do believe its the cactus. the stem is ugly & flat about 2 inches wide and kind of thin.
Dave

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

Thanks a lot Jeanette. We got the hail last night. Came and went and came back off and on for about a half hour. Must have just swirled around. They say today is the last of the cold, tho. Maybe .....

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Go ahead and laugh Lee and I will smack you. I have a long reach. lol. That sciatic nerve thingy is miserable. I go to the chiropractor and he helps me alot with my discomfort. Most of my problem is in my head. Shut up Lee.....I am talking and you are not to be laughing because I admit I have head problems. I get vertigo big time and this Dr. uses a laser and it really has been helping. I was not too sure I wanted to do it at first, but now I am able to not walk around looking like I am drunk most of the time. When in fact, I am not drunk but just a little tipsy. No, just kidding. My kids get concerned becausse when I get up fast I sway and they are afraid I will fall over. My God, we are in bad shape for the shape we are in. If we could all write down our aches and pains and send them to the moon would not that be wonderful. At least when our scientists get there they will have something to find. Now I am sounding crazy. O.K. back to that ugly bug. That is one nasty looking critter and if he lives around you I would suggest you send him packing.
I had a nest of those praying mantis hatch at my other house and they are a pain to get rid of. I did not know they bite,,,,,my kids used to catch them and play with them when they were little. Did you ever see those bugs that look like brown sticks. They are hard to find and harder to see, but we have them here in NJ and they are really a sight. If I ever see another one I will take a pic for you all. I am going to Wa Wa for my daily fix.
I am a coke a cola addict. Not coke, but cola and I need a fountain coke daily. Or I get a headache. Which reminds me.
If they ever make growing "pot" legal, I am going to sign up to grow it under the direction of the Dept. of Ag. for medical purposes only. Think of the money we could make doing that. I know it is grown from seeds and I would guess you must get the seeds from the Government to grow it legally. Does anyone out there know if there is anyplace in the USA that is permitted to legally grow it? I may be old, but if there is a buck to be made by growing seeds, I am here and ready. Off for my coke. JB

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

JB I do agree, lets grow it legally and get rich. I will tell you a little story about DH grandmother. At age 93 she started what she thought were flower seeds, in her apt. window. My FIL brought her the seeds from the tavern. You guessed it, they were "pot" seeds someone gave him. She grew them til they got about a foot or so tall, right there in the front window. Beautiful plants, healthy, but no flowers. Now, next door lived an Officer, who had to walk by the window to get to his apt. One day, a knock came on the door, and he asked her if she knew what the plants were. She replied no, until the flowers come I can't tell. When he told her, she laughed and said, well if I can grow it, so can anyone. Needless to say, the plants were put down the garbage disposal. A couple of days later same officer brought her some verbena, saying that they might look similiar, but they were legal for her to grow. We sure had a laugh over that one, and the officer really had a great time telling of the 93 year old "pot" grower. I promise this is a true story.
I don't know where this bug came from, got in an email from someone. I didn't know the praying mantis bit either. I have a few that visit in the summer, and they are really beautifuly colored. Guess I better watch out, wouldn't want the little devils biting me.
Can't help the laughter, it isn't often I get to put one over on someone, and even less when it is by accident. Consider myself smacked by you that reach is something else hehe. Later all, nap time, Lee

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Hi: I don't think they are harmful just a let me go bite. There is a small town in northern california that ia allowing some growing and there are also little tea rooms where you can go into the back and look at the samples to buy.I saw this on tv. they interviewed the tea room owner and he would not say how much he sold because he was following city law not state or federal and did not want to agrivate the dea. I would think the government has better things to do than harrass the public in a small town. I am sure they will one day either be the leading cause or a big bust on the news.
That story was cute. Most of the time cops are generally nice and aren't looking to harras the public.
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I think you can grow it for medicinal purposes in Oregon. Have to have a drs prescription for it. I think. Jeanette

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

While you guys nap, I am going to get on the tractor and mow grass. It is to rain for the next four days off and on and that will mean NO mowing. It will be up to my buttinski if that happens. Sleep tight and I will talk later. Off to cut the green stuff.

Oh yes, I almost forgot, LOVE your granny. Sounds a bit like me. LOL JB

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

actually, I think they can here in Montana also, with a DR's OK. Not sure enough to try it JB. I know you wouldn't visit me. Jeanette, I just got up from my nap and have about a half inch of snow all over the yard. Don't know what I did to make you send it over here, but please.... I take it all back. :-}
