What's bloomin' in May?!

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Love those passi's. I have them growing for the first time this year, too. (The purple one, that's supposed to be the most cold-hardy. I've gone blank on the name.) Anyone know how big they get before they bloom, if they haven't been in a GH? I started these from seeds a few months back.

X, we got a bunch of rain Friday. Waiting for the predicted rain for today. None yet.

This is a tiny little daylily called "Double Cutie". It's only about 1" high and the blossom is maybe 3".

X, it is lightly fragrant, but, oh, so pretty! I'm waiting for Zuzu to help me ID it on the rose forum. She thinks it might be Miss Ada. We'll see.

Rednyr: That lily is awesome. Did someone ID it as a Peruvian lily? There may be a lot of "deer tracks" showing up at your mom's if you let us know where she lives :-)

Xeramtheum- thanks. This one is new, but I've had Hydrangea serrata 'Purple Tiers' for years and it has the same blooms, but in purple. I LOVE it and was thrilled to find the white one.

Borders: That looks very similar to `Shooting Stars' which I have in Asheville. It's gorgeous.

I love hydrangeas but have never had any success in rooting them. You'd think they would be easy with those green fleshy stems.

Wow, it's surprising how much farther along y'all are down in SC vs here in central NC.

Not much new here. The yellow coneflower is starting to bloom. The bees seem to like it.

Magnolia 'Little Gem'. For some reason, the flowers don't want to open fully this spring. But it still smells nice!

This weather has been so screwy this last week it's making some of my flowers come out the wrong colors. I have a late blooming amaryllis, apple blossom that came out pure white!

bonjon & TomH - how old is your "New Dawn". Mine is blooming like crazy right now, but the photos don't do it justice. Mine is only about 5 year old and I think it had about 700-1000 buds on it! And I have deer and rabbit problems too! I just sprayed all my lilies with the egg spray last night.

BirdieBlue that 2nd appears to be some kind of Salvia and the other may be a Veronica?

I caved yesterday and brought home a Euphorbia milii from Lowe's. It's only in a 4" pot.
I'm pretty sure it's not winter hardy in my zone (8a).

It's blooming now. Anyone in zone 8 have Euphrobia, and have any tips on keeping it blooming and growing over the summer, and - what do you do with yours in the winter?

Thanks,
Deb

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

You are right Deb. This morning I dug down a bit and found the tags. Veronica and Salvia! You have a good eye and memory!

I have the "Diamond Frost" Euphorbia in a container. It likes FULL SUN and it blooms like crazy! This is my first year so I haven't tried to winterize it yet. It looks like a delicate plant it is actually very hardy in the sun. I have it planted with purple angelonia and red callie.

LiliMerci - my 'New Dawn' rose is also about 5 years old and it's about the same size as yours. It started out about a foot tall and didn't do much the first couple of years, but the past two years it's really taken off.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

I call it "the house eater". I was warned but really did not believe it. I have to trim it back some in the fall and I did not do a very good job this last fall. The 2nd year, a contractor that treated the woods on my arbor was supposed to cut the twine and take the roses off but did not do it. It burned the plant badly. I really thought it would never recover again, but look at it today. I can smell the roses from the street and my arbor sits pretty far back off the street.

So if anyone out there going to plant a New Dawn, you need a strong support system for it.

LiliMerci - lets see - I built that bed in 2006, think that's when I planted my New Dawn climbing rose. that was a drought year, and I was working long long hours, and injured my shoulders hauling water to my plants. it didn't really get going, but it did survive, which a lot of things haven't. was not expecting it to be so difficult to train - it insists on going toward the irises in front of it (east) DUH> it does get some manure, too.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

I did feed it a little the first two years - rose plant food and coffee grind, but now I don't do anything to it. I do deadhead the ones I could reach, which allow the roses to rebloom, just spurts, here and there - but nothing like the initial blooms in the spring.

The 'New Dawn' rose is lovely. I have put it on my want list. Ardesia is always trying to talk me out of thugs, but I never listen! :) Maybe I'll learn one day...

Lili, I love yarrow. It can take over my garden if it wants. :) I like that red/purple/white combo you've got there, too.

The Gardenias have just begun.

I did not know flytraps bloomed. Does it have a fragrance?

This is my favorite hydrangea. It looks best from above however so I took the picture from the deck.

Jenny, I have Fuji Waterfall too. The flowers on mine are turning pink as they age; are yours doing that?

I paid a small fortune for this one from a hotshot hydrangea grower in GA and it really has not done well for me. It really isn't any larger than when I bought it 3 years ago. But, I do love the flowers.

My false agave has been under the sprinkler system and it seems to like the extra water. I guess it is not as drought tolerant as a real agave would be.

My Fuji Waterfall is new this year- but it's big! I bought it at the local farmers market, one of our growers there is the best. So far, the blooms are still all white.

Ardesia- I love the variegated hydrangea and the Gumpo azaleas!!!! I've wanted those azaleas fpr a while now, and I'm not fond of azaleas.
