What's bloomin' in May?!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Ned had Fuji's???? Darn, I would have preferred to give him the big bucks.

My Gumpos came from Coopers in COlumbia, they have the best azaleas around.

This is a Viet Nam gardenia. I do not like the flowers so much but it is supposed to bloom all summer.

Wow .. I never knew there were so many different species of hydrangea .. I am apparently only familiar with the more common Hydrangea macrophylla. After looking through plant files at all the different species I realized I was coming down with the "gotta have it" virus.

Does that Gardenia have the same scent as the "regular" ones?
The variegated Hydrangea is gorgeous!!

This is the only Hydrangea I have, but I like it very much and it seems happy.

Yes Deb, the Viet Nam does have a lovely scent.

I have to tell you a funny. I went to mail a package home when I was in Hawaii. The postman said thank you and handed me a gardenia; he was giving one to all the women who came in. I thought it was so sweet.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

This is another favorite hydrangea. It is a NOID and the color does not depend on the soil chemistry. It is pink no matter what you add to the soil.

Debin, if I come to Charleston this summer, I'll bring you some yarrow. My dad has a place close to downtown Summerville.

Ardesia, I love your Vietnam Gardenia. I have seen many beautiful tropicals in Vietnam but never a Vietnam Gardenia. I'll have to ask one of my aunt about it. And I love the Fuji Waterfall. I saw a small one at my cousin today. It was in a container. I wonder why she didn't plant it in the ground. I will have to ask for a cutting later.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Thanks Lili, I had my Fuji Waterfalls in the ground and it never did anything so I re-potted in it hopes it might grow a bit. Also, a friend who is a hydrangea expert told me they are good candidates for pots.

I bought the gardenia last winter from B B Barnes nursery near Asheville. The tag said Viet Nam Gardenia but that was all. They were selling them as houseplants at the time.

I don't know if the Venus Flytrap Flower smells. It's so mucky out there at the moment, I'm afraid I'd kill myself trying to get to it. It bet it doesn't smell, good, though. I bet it smells like something that would attract flies...

On a different note, this is my all time favorite hydrangea, H.serrata 'Miyama yae murasaki', also known as Purple Tiers. This picture does not do it justice, it's very lovely and graceful with the most beautiful blooms. For some reason this year it's blooming in purple, violet and pink. Usually it's just a bright purple.

Here's a close-up of the blooms on Purple Tiers. They look a lot like Fuji Waterfall.

Ardesia, yes, I got the Fuji Waterfall from the Rahn's. They have the nicest plants and they are so cheap!!!! This plant was in a 3 gal. pot and is about 4 ft. wide and it was $20. I put it in the ground, I'm not a good pot person like you.

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

Oops. It would help if I attached the picture I was just talking about.

X, I wintersow my sweet peas in Feb and it's blooming now. I have some America Sweet Peas that I'm waiting to see blooms.

Lil, when I tried that the first time I grew them it got to hot for them to really take off. By sowing in the early fall, they started budding in the middle of April and bloomed constantly til the middle of may, they are now all seed pods.

That's how mine are. If it ever gets dry enough to go out I will pull the vines up today.

Jenny, My plant cost more about that much and it was in a 3" pot. I am afraid to go and see Ned, I'll probably spend more money on plants I really don't need, LOL He was not at the Farmer's Market but I picked up some bilbergias from one of the garden clubs that was having a plant sale.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Ardesia, I don't need to wait until the pods turn brown to pull up the plant?

well, might as well post some more of that------ New Dawn Rose

over the fence, back - west - side, into the pool enclosure. fortunately, it's got a 5' wide bed of hostas and cannas there, so it doesn't come near the bare skin bathers.

south side of that first shot "flush", not as visible in that first photo.

editted to add, so, yeah, it's a wee bit bigger than I originally planned, but then again, I don't let it grow east onto the irises, those canes get pruned off, otherwise I couldn't weed the 8' wide bed in front of this.

bonjon, photos just don't do New Dawn justice. Mine were flushed with thousands of blooms over a week period. Then it's gone. I get a small flush during the summer. Probably more if I deadhead but that's too much work for me.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

X, if you are going to save the seeds you would certainly wait until the pods are dried. I do not plan on saving any of my seeds. The plants were all hybrids so who knows what I would get and more importantly, they are in a prominent position and they look really ratty right now. My neighbors already think my jungle is too messy.

Raleigh, NC

really?

my New Dawn's photos were taken May 1st. it's still in bloom - just not as much. all HT roses have an initial flush, a fall flush, and stranglers inbetween. only if they are heavily feed, watered, and have a good cold winter, proper pruning, spraying, and great drainage will they keep going. the pro gardens have time for all that - I don't. but I sure love this one.

I topdress it with composted manure each year, too. here, we have to force them dormant - guess we got enough cold, though, as I never did.

One more - Caesalpinia gilliesii. Flowers open in the evening and will start to wilt when the hot sun hits them the next day. This picture was taken just a few minutes ago.

Love those hippeastrelias. I planted two bulbs this year and they bloomed while I was away. Mine must be a different cultivar because I do not have those gorgeous red stems.

Your bulbine is prettier too; it looks like it's flowers are larger than the cv Hallmark.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Your Caesalpinia is an Oh WoW!

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

ardesia - I got my x Hippeastrelia from Plant Delights several years ago. It's multiplied nicely and this year has 5 blooming-size bulbs (I've given away a couple in the past too). It's in full sun so maybe that makes the stems red (or maybe yours is a different hybrid).

Bulbine asphodeloides does have larger flowers (and is a larger plant overall) than B. frutescens.

TomH, all your flowers are beautiful, especially the lilies. Deer ate most of mine, but I managed to salvage a few.
