Hemo - those aren't trilliums by chance at your moms are they? I'm no expert on them - but tropicana I bet could answer your question

Kannapolis, NC

I don't think they're trilliums. I have some of those and they don't have the long spurs on the tips of the blossoms like these do. Also, the bloom isn't anything like the blooms on my trilliums.

Thank you for the suggestion, though.

And some digitalis just for good measure:

Edited to say these don't hold a candle to yours, Rednyr, but they are fuller today than when I snapped this on Sunday.

I LOVE David Austin roses. I have just one variety, 'Abraham Darby', but they are the best. They are so pretty and the smell is heavenly.

Last weekend at the farmers market I was volunteering at the master gardener booth. Ardesia told me to always bring cut flowers from the garden (and, of course, I always do what Alice tells me to do.) I put several of the 'Abraham Darby' roses in the vase, and that is the only flower people asked about- well, besides growing tomatoes and oleander caterpillars.

Borders: This is the first time I've tried the DA roses, although I've been drooling over them for years, but I must admit they're wonderful. I love fragrant roses and if a rose isn't fragrant, I'm not buying it. There are several exceptions to this rule in my garden: I did buy a Mr. Lincoln simply because DH's mother had one in her rose garden. It has no fragrance. And DH bought a Knock-out Rose last year, which is planted on the neighbor's side of a fence, but other than that, I want a rose to smell like a rose! The DA's are extremely fragrant, so I'm in rose heaven.

`Abraham Darby' is on my list of wants.

Hemo I am so with you on Roses! The whole point is that glorius scent!!!! I put up with the black spot because I gotta have me some roses that smell like heaven.....Jasmine, Roses and even honeysuckle in a pinch...it's what leaving your windows open is all about....although I found an awesome verbena last year Gibson Pink that smells like baby powder - it overwintered in my semi heated greenhouse nicely and they are blooming right now...I have found a Nemesia that also smells very 'fresh' ....like clothes on the line....LOL

Here's a not-so-good picture of an Austin rose, Rosa 'Molineux'. Normally the color is more yellow, but the combination of the wide temperature range recently and really bad lighting from a mostly cloudy day gives it a bit of an orange tint.

Tom, Molineux is another one on my want list! My Golden Celebration is doing beautifully, just beaten down with all the rain. And Proud Titania, that lovely lady has got to be moved. I put her in an out-of-the-way spot because the photos in the catalogs didn't do her justice. She's a beauty and smells delicious!

If this rain ever lets up, I'll try to get more recent photos. Golden Celebration has really opened up and is so pretty now. That one little bud was all I had a photo of and now she's all abloom! Oh, I walk around the yard now smelling and admiring all my recently planted roses. Can't wait to see what they'll look like next year.

My Vigna angularis aka Yellow Snail Vine is blooming .. it's a cousin to Vigna caracalla and Phaseolus caracalla. It was hard to find seeds but I finally did .. the flowers are a bit disappointing compared to its cousin and it doesn't have that spectacular fragrance the other two have.

My Sweet Peas are finishing up and I'm starting to collect seeds now. If you want to grow sweet peas in the south, start them in the fall. They didn't even blink at this extra cold winter we had.

My Rosa multiflora, what I call my Hedge Rose is finishing up as well.

Lovely, X, just lovely. I planted some sweet peas last year, sometime in Dec., but they didn't come up. Guess the borrowers got them. I'll try again and get them in sooner.

X what month did you plant the sweet peas?

Amy

I started them in early October. I soaked them for a few days then sowed them in the container. I also placed some chicken wire over the top of the containers so the tree rats & other critters couldn't dig them up.

X - I have never seen yellow snail vine before... it's interesting.

I planted the purple version of the snail vine on my Mom's orchid house. It, um, eventually contributed to the collapse of the orchid house. Oops.

This showed up yesterday, Datura stramonium var. tatula. The startling thing about it is that it has BLUE anthers!

X that is a wondeful pic of your Dat!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks! This year I pulled out all my datura seeds that were either very old or I had less than 5 left and grew them out for more and fresh seed. So far I'm not disappointed. Belle Blanche was in bloom this morning. The real exciting thing is a rare datura metel called Cream & Sugar. I had 2 seeds left of that and one germinated. It's got buds on it. It's an ecru color. I'm thinking if I cross it with a watered down purple I might get close to pink.

Oh and TomH3787, I forgot to mention, I have a thread about Vigna angularis on the Vines & Climbers Forum. Had a heck of a time getting seeds for that .. flowers are really not like its cousins, vigna caracalla and phaseolus caracalla

Need help, please, on Allium flavum, which is supposed to have a yellow flower. Mine just look like plain old wild garlic right now and haven't bloomed. Suggestions or tips, anyone?

Last fall I dug up my daylilies, only had a few and crammed them in a pot so I could put my white butterfly ginger where they were. The daylilies are actually blooming in the pot! don't know the name of this one.

Xeramtheum- pretty daylily. I have no idea about the names of most my daylilies- I didn't care when I planted them. My butterfly ginger is taking over (not complaining.) It's kind of like canna it seems, it takes over real estate rapidly if it likes where it's planted.

Lovely blossoms, everyone. I have scapes on some of my DLs but no blooms yet. My foxgloves have almost bloomed out, the roses are starting and I'll try to get some shots this afternoon when I get home from work. Ta-ta.

Where are you all? It's been so quiet. I will now torment you with pics.

Clematis Princess Diana. For once, my slack planning worked out. Just as this one quits blooming, the morning glory takes over.

Clematis roguchi. I tried to take pics of the very cute clematis addisonii, but they all came out blurry. It is the CUTEST plant, but apparently has cloaking device.
