Best/Worse &What did I learnt today/Chat with Friends #102

Glenview, IL

Ajuga is beautiful...it does spread nice and thick, I have some growing...makes a nice groundcover for hard to grow spaces.
Infact I use them for my mini gardens...And yes it can take a strict beating! The spread by runners and seed.

well, going to make a few bucks...typing Julias paper, she was up the entire night handwriting it. lol why she didn't type it I don't know, but now she doesn't feel like typing it so asked if I would, said sure.

I hope you do find your Lilac tree, mine is starting to get flower buds!

Ok break over...see ya soon.

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

I love it in my fairy garden and love it-mine doesn't spread very much though....

Victoria Harbour, ON

Judy, sure could send you some..

How many times during your gardening season do you edge your garden edges...

Victoria Harbour, ON

OMG Stacey, must be the soil I have, it's virtually everywhere..I would say that by mid July it would have strangled all my plans...it's on the back edge where the tree line is, it's ok to be there but certainly not in my flower beds..maybe there are different types..does yours smell minty?

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Betty,
Does this look anything like what you have? This is dead nettle, and looks a little like ajuga sometimes, but is much more invasive than ajuga. The picture doesn't show but it is also a dark reddish green leafed plant when it grows here

Hello To All;

Tubby - Your story brought tears to my eyes....I need to reiterate to the kids....

Hey Judy - Thanks! Glad to hear you were a "Band Mom" too....we have a few on here! Sharran was one as well....I wish our group had more parents involved....we need all the Band Moms we can get!
Sounds like you are all getting loads of work done!

Debbie - bday not so excited about...but we'll see how it goes. Love your little visitor...I guess the winter wreath will be hanging out for a while! Love the pic idea! Trust Betty to turn it into a craft! That would be a good Christmas card though...
So you have a performer in your family as well...I've forgotten what kind of a performance if you've mentioned it. Sounds like a wonderful trip.....How old is DS going ? Is it his first trip without Mom?

Betty - I guess what I've said before....One (wo)man's invasive is another (wo)man's plant. :) I'm still keeping an eye on Tubby's Creeping Jenny....not out of hand yet Tubby...but I've got my eye on it!

Hugs to all.....The very last Band Booster meeting of the year was rescheduled for tonight....so headed to that in a bit....

Mary

Mary, DS is 16...and in high school band. The boy is gifted with music, when he wants to do something. We have DH's grandfathers old piano, and when DS was about four or five, he would hear something on the radio...and start tapping it out on the piano. He started Saxophone in 4th grade, and moved to baritone Sax in 7th grade. This year, he has taken up electric guitar at home.

Every year the band & chorus kids go on a trip, do several performances, all the while having a good time. And yes, this is his first trip away from Mom....he will handle it fine, me on the other hand is questionable! LOL He is my baby.

To make the trip worse...he will be gone Mother's Day...and on DH's birthday, which I Monday. I don't usually get Mother's Day because of DH and his birthday, but I will survive. They get back sometime between 11 to Midnight on Monday.

I have to go get a few things done, I have been running like a mad woman the last 3 hours! LOL

Here is the current picture of my baby...and only boy..along with his oldest sister at her wedding

Got this info - not sure if it works but worth a try
How To Remove a Tick

Bet it would work on dogs too.

Spring is here and the ticks will soon be showing in heads. Here is a good way to get them off you, your children, or your pets. Give it a try. Please forward to anyone with children... or hunters or dogs, or anyone who even steps outside in summer!! A School Nurse has written the info below -- good enough to share -- And it really works!!I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to remove a tick. This is great, because it works in those places where it's some times difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc.

Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few seconds (15-20), the tick will come out on its own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away.

This technique has worked every time I've used it (and that was frequently), and it's much less traumatic for the patient and easier for me. Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be damaging in any way. I even had my doctor's wife call me for advice because she had one stuck to her back and she couldn't reach it with tweezers. She used this method and immediately called me back to say, "It worked!"

Please pass on. Everyone needs this helpful info!

Tubby will pass it on to my cousin.....thankfully we don't live in tick country any more!! And were we live now our "chigger weeds" don't have chiggers either!!!

Hey All;

I'm back! Good meeting. They "forgot" to put the band in the yearbook this year...so quite a few angry parents...

Debbie - Great looking kids! you've got a bunch of talent in your home! How nice to see them all off and married and happy....

Betty was mentioning the 'next' pics after High School would be wedding photos.....to me at one time...

DH trying to talk......"Dh over shoulder" as the kids would say....

Have mercy....what an evening I have had.

I had a real "Debbie moment" today. Grabbed all my stuff running out of the house...purse, cell phone...the kids...and dropped Shannon off down at the store. Shane & I needed some last minute shopping for his trip. I get home, and DH & SHannon both are upset I didn't return their calls. Well, my phone didn't ring!

I go to get my phone...and it isn't there. SO, 3 hours...offf and on looking for my phone. Calling the number...it went straight to voice mail. Great. I lost it. So, DH moves furniture, checks the van...we call Walmart...nope no phone. At least not mine.

So DH goes to bed, and I sit down to check email...and reach for my shopping list in my shirt pocket to make sure I got everything...and BOOM...there is my cell phone! OMG! And it was turned off. I turned it on...and two minutes later, I hear ding ding ding...all these messages start coming in. DH hears my phone and comes down...where was it????? Ummmm, I don't know...but it wasn't in my shirt pocket! Shakes his head...says "poor me" and goes back to bed! LOL

And with that, I think I am turning in myself!
Debbie

Also, tell your son that women LOVE a man that can play music, so even if the girls don't appreciate it now, the lady's will a little later on;) Sorry, I know that isn't what you want to hear for your baby, but so true^_^

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning,

Before I start reading the posts above, I have to wipe my tears ...

You know those tears that you have when you are so touched by something...

When I got home last night there was a message from Kyle, it was then 11:10pm so not a time to call..this morning before leaving I called...

Was telling me the trampoline netting was wripped and he thought I might be able to sew it but after looking at it knew he had to purchase a new one..winter was hard on it..

I said "Kyle, there's never a weekend that you don't drop in to say hi!

He told me about family outings and said all his other hours were put to his organizing a 'Kyle's Bike-A-Thon' for the cure for cancer..I asked him if it was a school project and he said no, that it had taken the life of his grandfather whom he will now never know, and his other grandma Betty has cancer in the form of a blood disorder as does his uncle Mike on Roger's side of the family..so he said he couldn't help think that it's young people like him who has the responsibility to find the 'cure'...oh oh..tears...then he said he'd e-mail me his flyer..

He contacted the Cancer Society who will provide him with all the sponsorship forms, he's gone to find some corporate sponsorships, he's put his posters all around town, he's got info on facebook, he's e-mailed everyone that he can..said his goal is to fundraise $1,000. grandma will do the run and I'll donate a few hundred to help his cause..

He's so enthusiastic about this..he just turned 13, guess why I'm overwhelmed is it's not something normally that a young man his age is interested in spending his time doing...

One of grandma's sweeties for sure...

Oh Betty, I am all teary also over that. There is a reason it happened today, and a reason you posted it here today. You were supposed to make me smile also!

Actually it was 15 years ago today...that Shannon was diagnosed at age 3 with Leukemia. She is 18! So tell him, people are getting better....and surviving
You have a very special young man there. And please, tell him, he isn't just helping adults with cancer...but children also. If it wasn't for people like him....helping raise funds and research, my daughter Shannon wouldn't be here. And give him a hug from this ever so greatful Mom.

I am behind on updating the site..has been a few months....but if you ever get totally bored and want to read Shannons history, you can read her Caringbridge site. Click on Journal History....and has the story there.

Second time this morning Debbie I've shed a tear..omg .. all happy tears though...I'm going to copy and paste your post so that I can e-mail it to Kyle..it will offer him more encouragement..

Went to Superstore, Canadian Tire and Walmart last night for the garden plants to look for lilac trees..both had poor quality shrubs so ended up with none, today I'll take a run over at luch to the Garden Gallery...but, I did look at the ajuga plant and it wasn't at all like the plant that is taking over my gardens...

Shar, no I have seen an odd plant of it in the yard but I do think it's what Carol has named, Creeping Charlie...now Carol if you can tell me how to rid myself of it...

Carol, have you seen the commercial advertising the new Canada 'Green' grass seed? you can throw seed on cement and it will grow..great for shade areas, yellow patches etc....will pick some up this weekend and try it..Canadian Tire has a large bag for $16.98..worth a try...

Went to my class and another student who painted with me so many years ago was there...she had a bit of a stroke and I guess with seeing 3 of the people she hadn't seen in awhile, she was worked up and couldn't do anything but talk, fret and worry about her project..felt sad for her...

Learning, press send then go look at photo's...

Debbie what a beautiful family you have...omg he's gorgeous..and yep, just like Stacey said, everyone loves a musician..lucky you lol those teen years and girls/girls/girls is just upon your doorstep..

Your Mothers Day and DH's birthday will be full of joy just knowing he's enjoying himself in Washington..he'll have so much to share with you when he gets back..

Speaking of Mothers Day, the boys come over and without the 'why's, 'how come', 'why do you need this' lol perform all the duties I've on a 'mom's to do list'...usually Jeff comes down for part of a day..he just e-mailed me to tell me how much they enjoyed Canada's Wonderland on the weekend, said line-ups were only 15 minutes long, boys had a great time..he added that he thinks he might drive up on Friday night and stay the entire weekend...he's off to look at a kayak for his 2 week trip up the trent...said he'd take me out and buy me something for my garden..I'm excited, just what I need, more garden art..

I had a local store put aside a lovely 2' fairy with metal wings and she holds a solar light in her hands for my mom, maybe we'll both take a drive over to the cottage and visit with her..I was so tempted to buy one for myself..but said nope...aren't I good...

Stacey, going back to the invasive plant..saw at walmart a spray, leaves the flowers alive but kills the weed..can you tell me how this can possibly happen? guess we'll both have to get on our 4's with a spade in hand and dig up every bit of it..not bad when you have a 30x30 lawn, but shucks, a double lot? that's cause for sore knees...

Tubby, that's precious..biker and bae..yep, heading that way...
My sister Sharon is leaving for France Friday, told her to bring me back a frenchman..maybe we'll look much the same...

OMG tubby, you just reminded me of a story..want to hear...no, then just skip the post, I'm rambling today, always tell when I'm sentimental or upset I just ramble on...

I can almost recall every detail,

It was May long weekend and because my grandparents raised me, my parents would visit every long weekend...I can remember that I was maybe 8 and excited that it was firecracker day..all our family members would get together and have a display in the back garden..(you couldn't get away with that nowdays)..and like most children, when parents are gabbing away as though something major is happening you listen..my mother (whose mother passed away but a couple of months before I was born at the age of 34) was all in a huff because her grandmother had just married..she was nearing 80 and the man she married was in his late 30's...we never visited her, don't know why, she didn't live far from Penetang, she lived in Victoria Harbour, where I now live..
actually I pass the homestead which now houses a new home each time I visit Greg/Melanie...well Mom said we just had to go and see if this rumour was true..

I'm not quite sure what kind of home it was in reality, but as a child I thought it was spooky, old wooden frame, went inside with mom and could remember this old lady smoking a pipe..awfully wrinkled she was, of course when you are 8 an 80 year old would look wrinkled..looking at myself in the t.v. screen I see quite a few and I'm only 61...lol..

There were a lot of grapevines on the property so I spent a good part of my visit picking grapes and eating as many as I was putting in a basket..
I listened to some of their conversation but not much made sense...her DH wasn't home at the time but shortly before the end of the visit he arrived...not a bad looking man so didn't know what the full could be, as a child of 8 he didn't look much younger than grannie did..we didn't stay much longer and not much was said of the visit...it wasn't until many years later did I hear from relatives that after grannie died, he couldn't deal with life, had to be put into a mental health center until his death..now one could say that maybe him being the age he was when he married this old lady that he must have been mentally disturbed to start with...don't know..what I do know is talking with the older towns people they remember how this young man would pull a sleigh (in winter) and a wagon in summertime/fall to take this woman to church functions, grocery shopping and that he simply adored her..he catered to her every whim..most say not many have experienced that kind of love...

sure wish I knew more about the story..but all who would know are now gone....

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Betty, my lawn is about 3 X your size, but my beds are just 2 that are about 40 ft long by about 8 feet deep.....

Victoria Harbour, ON

Lots of weeding then...you've a big yard..mine is 2 town lots, big enough for me to maintain...

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

We sit on 1/3 of an acre.....whatever that means-LOL

Victoria Harbour, ON

Guess if my lot size on both sides, front and back it's just a bit over 1/3rd of an acre...

OMG what a way to spend a lunch hour, however, you need a few days just to walk around and a bag full of $$$...

They have my lilac trees, almost ready to bloom, about 5' for $29.99...it's a hot day here so not great to leave them in the vehicle..will pick up 2 on Friday as I leave work..they had lovely white lilac's, probably stunning against my deep purple ones...

Cindy here at work is starting to get an interest in gardening..so bought a package of climbing cypress vine (white) and shared the pkg with her..we'll be in competition to see whose vine will grow the quickest..lol

I did manage to purchase a mature silver lace vine..it's just so pretty when in bloom..already have one at the side of back deck but would love another on the other side...

What a beautiful place...

Drats Sharon just msn'd me..she and my mom are toxic with each other...Sharon's son who is 41 who was on top of the world and for whatever reason just doesn't do a thing, expecting everyone to offer $$$...would say that Sharon has given him over $50K in the past couple of years..where it goes nobody kows, but I've a few ideas..my mom is horrible to Sharon, keeps putting the guilt trip on her..give $$, give $$ and more $$$...my mom had better not tell me that Sharon is a bad mother or I'll really give her the what for...

Hello To All -

Betty I love that story.... I know how it feels to have an unanswered past...felt that way since Mom is gone...of course I'm so stupid ...couldn't think of a thing to ask while she was sick....

I did it.

I made reservations for DS and me. Just the 2 of us. Go visit Dad (near you Marion). Not those ressies yet...but made Blue Man Group at Universal Studios...and hotel in Orlando.

A very quick trip. But DS is 17. How many trips with me will he want to take?

DD's will be at visitation....

DH will be working...

Hugs to all,

Mary

PS - Pandora playing - thanks to Sharran and Betty for that....

mary...there is another one: jango.com

I like it even better than Pandora, because it will continue to play for hours with no pauses even if you go away from your computer. And also you can set it up exactly the way you want it.

Try it.

Also glad about your trip!

Thank you Sharran - You have taught me so much!

Will try it...

Blood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue

I will continue to forward this every time it comes around!

STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters....S.T.R.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today.)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

Thumbnail by tubbytee
(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Tubby those are signs of strokes, but not everyone has them at first. When my Dad had his strokes years ago, he did not have those symptoms. He woke up new years morning and was rubbing his left arm, thinking he just slept on it the wrong way. He thought it would wake up soon. As the day went on, about noon time, he was still rubbing his arm, then he started the slurred speech. That is when he was rushed to the hospital, but alas was way too late. He is still with us, but he has a lot of brain damage, and can't do anything for himself. My Mom (God rest her soul) took care of him for the first 5 years till she passed away, now I am taking care of him. All the Dr's. I have talked to said those are the signs, but not everyone has them. Each person is different, so you just have to use common sense. When your arm stays numb for several hours, get it checked out!

Good morning!

OMG, in desperate need of coffee this morning, lol anyone else?

Debbie, what a handsome son you have! Isn't it incredible where these kids get their talent? I ccan barely humm a tune, let alone play an instrument! My daughter is gifted the same way. She figured out how to play Fur Elise(sp?) on the piano. Sat down one day and played like she's been playing it for years...I do love the music that flows when she is in the mood to play.
Anyway how special you DS plays music, enjoy every minute.

OMG, Want to share what Breenie has been working on. She isn't musically talented, she is truely artistcally talented, been drawing since she could hold a pencil...This is for art, she is not finished but I am just too excited to share...This cat is from a picture when she went to the zoo not too long ago.

ok be back in a bit!
Hope you are having a nice day

OH, and Betty, What a beautiful grandson you have, was choked up at his Cancer campaign. Heart of Gold he has, you should be Very Proud!
