Spring Bulbs - What's Bloomin? V

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I planted more than a few. I lost count when we hit 40 planted, but I think it was about 45. Many different ones. They are leafing out nicely. I planted a herd of hamamelis to add some more later winter color too. Just think of all the little bulbs I can tuck under them when they get big. Patti

Patti, Can't wait to see photos of that. That is part of my problem, there were too many nice winterberries and not enough space. Did you get both red & yelow hamamelis? Orange too? You are going to love your winterscape!!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I got a wide range of colors and bloom time.
Hamamelis
Wisley Supreme
Harvest moon
Champlin Red
Mohonk Red
Rubin
Aphrodite
Pallida
Rochester
Diane
Sunburst
Jelena

Back to Narcissus. Here are some of the orange and yellow ones are out now. Patti

My gosh, Patti. The lovliness just gets better and better!!!

Stormyla,

If you can believe it, I started with FIVE! But they came from Old House Gardens, whih I think is just a tremendous supplier for these kinds of somewhat obscure plants. It's been a few years, perhaps five. I paid no attention to them and just let them come up. Then two years ago I started adding compost to them in the fall, and zoom! The clump expanded by at least 20% this past year. I think our rainy spring helped.

DonnaMack, your clump of Leucojum is stupendous I only have a couple. But if they ever start to get that big, I am in trouble as they are in a very small bed.

I do love OHG and have my eye on a few things right now, but many of the tulips are out of my price range, plus mine are so susceptible to wind and rain, that I don't dare buy the really expensive ones

Here are a few that came from them, Narcissus Louise de Coligny has a great peach cup, and N. Marjorie Hine has a great frilly edge while Tulipa Schoonoord was a great this year posing as a peony. Patti

Thanks, Donna. Goodness, I planted 50 of the Leucojums, but they are broken into 10 clumps. I hope mine do half as well as yours!

Patti,

I love the orange/yellow combo narcissi and am getting more into them. Great collection you have! Thanks for showing.

Donna, I am a great OHG fan as well. Their bulbs are always good, and their attentiveness to the customer, untouchable. I mean, who else sends out a handwritten, personalized note from the owner with every order??? The way they treat their customers alone breeds loyalty and makes one want to patronize them.

BeaHive, wonderful Dutch irises. I love them too. They make a great bridge between the spring bloomers and the lilies, don't you think?

Hi guys. Great pictures of gorgeous blooms!

Someone asked to see pictures of my place for the garden tour.
I put them up w/Picasa. I hope those who want to can get to them.

tam I speechless, like out of a calendar. My dream is to have a black chicken but presently we have all the pets we can adequately care for. The hanging baskets sure are fancy. You've done GREAT. Here's a virtual GARDEN OF THE MONTH for ya.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Wow, Stormyla! I guess you'd better hold back on the love! But it will be spectacular. They bloom for weeks.

Bbrook, I hear you about the expense. I have never bought a tulip from OHG because I had rabbit and vole problems, which I brought under control, but wow are they expensive, especially if you like you tulips massed, the way I do. Scott is such a great guy, and his company so terrific, that I have purchased a lot of things over the years. Steve is right, their attentiveness is superb and they send the biggest bulbs I've ever seen.

The same two tulips from last year, dug up and used to decorate my peony beds while I wait for the peonies to bloom.

Tammy, A wonderful show and many beautiful photos of your lovely property. Shows lots of TLC. I am very jealous though, I've planted that lavender Dodecathon twice and it never appeared. Do you have the secret???

Kannapolis, NC

Tammy: I loved the tour of your property, but it made me want to rent a bulldozer and start over with my own yard! So much to be done here and we must have entered the NC monsoon season because it rains every day for the last week, so I'm getting virtually no work done in the yard, weeds are growing with wild abandon everywhere and it'll take me a month just to get back to where I was when the rain started. I run outside between showers and storms and throw a few things in pots or pull a few weeds, deadhead a few roses and bingo, here comes more rain.

Hope we get some of this rain in the summer when we'll need it.

Your rock walls and buildings are beautiful. I love rock!

Thanks guys.

Stormya - I have one dodecatheon in a dappled shade sometimes moist
garden & one in a little more sun and drier spot. I did kill one in the front
entrance garden where hostas thrive. Don't know what the secret is.

Donna - Is the Happy Family the pink one? Very pretty. I think I'm heading into
a pink phase. I went crazy with orange for the last 5-7 yrs. I'm tending more to
pink lately.

I'm loving seeing all the spring bulbs on this thread, but it's getting so long. How about we start a new one?

BTW, I've just placed a large order with Brent & Becky's for fall bulbs. Bea: I ordered those New Design tulips, some Thalia daffs, among other things. More Camassia for sure, some more Chionodoxa.

Someone start a new thread, please.

Tammy, Your home is my dream home! The property is stunning. My daughter starts college in Waynesburg PA this fall. Maybe I will more to PA! Lovely!

Thanks Bea. Its my dream home too. :-)

Waynesburg is on the other side of the state, not
terribly far from Pitts. I'm at the eastern end of PA.
(But the whole state is very pretty).

Oh, my! Your garden photos take my breath away! What beautiful displays of all the spring bulbs and blooms, ladies! Each of your homes should be on the garden tour this month! Thanks for posting all the pics and letting us see your online albums!

Nothing new here except weeds. Hopefully next week I'll have something interesting showing up. Maybe lilies?
