And I am pretty sure that between the wind and heat, these poor Sylvestris are done for already, and they just opened today..

These are "old" bulbs that I threw into a bed last fall. My hyacinths seemed to have disappeared entirely, but when I dug into a bed I found them. So I moved them, gave them compost and fertilizer, and the company of some tulips I dug up a couple of years ago. The hyacinths are at least six years old. They are General Kohler, an heirloom double.

One day later, the "old" hyacinths are much bigger.

Oooh, Donna-way to go on reviving those beautiful double Hyacinths! I really like Mrs.Backhouse, are they an heirloom?

Patti, I guarantee you'll LOVE species Tulips! I get more blooms each year from them like Daffodils. I like to plant them in elongated drifts of 50 or more bulbs- 50 will cover a drift about 3' long and 1 1/2' wide.

These T.linifolia were brilliant today in the sun!

Hi Neal,

Yes, Mrs. Backhouse is an heirloom, the first pink cupped daff (wink, wink). They are really tough. I only bought five and they have really thrived.

I thought those may be one of the early "pinks". The actual beige-yellow color is lovely to me, that shade of yellow mixes well with other soft colors better than strong golden yellows to my eye.

Love those "old" hyacinths!

I found species tulips last fall and tried some different ones..probably after seeing some of your lovely blooms gemini!

This bed has a mixture of clusianas, sylvestris, "fire of love" (a greigii, I think) and a few others not yet in bloom/done blooming.

I must say, I am finding them more and more charming...and if they come back AND multiply, well, I certainly wouldn't mind:)

I think these little "lady Jane"s look like a happy little family..

Wow, all - what phenomenal blooms! I only have a couple of daffodils left of my spring bulbs. Congrats on reviving your hyacinths, Donna :-)

And 'olympic flame', also a pot tulip.

I am hoping to move both of these out to a back bed when the are done blooming...hopefully since they are Darwins I can get a few more years out of them.

Artemiss,

I love the species, if only because they seem to last very well even if you miss digging them up. And they're so cheerful.

Steve, I've headed into major drive with my daffs and should have pics of my other varieties soon. One note, I have found that the miniature W.P. Milner (well, it's a division 1 trumpet) had the effect of repelling both voles and rabbits. I put little triangles of it in normally ravaged areas and the lilies and tulips in those areas haven't been touched. My suppliers were B&B and McClure & Zimmerman. The quality appears equal. Between thiram, Milorganite, some hardware cloth and the tulips, I am going to have the best bulb year I've ever had because losses are minimal. My tulips are showing color. I look forward to sharing pics.

Now to investigate other spots where my double hyacinths were...

My bed of tulips (supposedly "Mrs. John Scheepers" - I think they were mis-labeled at the grower, since they are white instead of yellow) are at their peak Monday, following a night of rain.

Bea, thank you for making me really explore my camera. Still learning but...

ALL these pics have me drooling!!!! LOVE 'em!!!

All these bulbs make me wish for a bobcat so I could excavate large areas and plant gobs of spring bulbs. Talk about your wow factor! Gorgeous, everyone.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

LOL Hemophobic I think we all need 'gobs' of bulbs. I'm bummed out. My muscari is just about a no show this year. It always comes up in the fall and then waits and flowers in the spring. I wonder if our super cold winter this year killed it off :( The tulips are coming up like gang busters though so maybe there is an upside.

Bea: what's the cream and red one? And the yellow variegated leaf one?

Oh, dear.

jmorth.that Cairo is a pretty color!

Leawood..every time I look at pictures of that bed I admire the work you put into it! So very worth it to see all those beautiful blooms!!!

Donna..I really like that vie en rose..and I need a bigger trumpeted 'pink' for my collection..such bad influences you all are;)

Bea..what's that blue stuff behind the yellow tulip? That's such a nice contrast!

Dahlianut..I also noticed my muscari wasn't as thick this year either..this is really the only place it made a showing, and as you can see, it's pretty sparse:

Angie..I am sorry but do not have the names of both those tulips.

Artemiss.. The blue stuff is Jack Frost Brunnera. Here is a picture of the entire plant. It is a wonderful plant for the shade.
