Fostoria, OH(Zone 5a)

Hey, BJ, will you foster me next? I would be good and even hlep around the house.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Heck, Janice... I'll adopt you permanently...

YIPPIE... Don printed plans to build my grape arbor, and said he'd build it Monday when he gets home. Actually, I think technically it's not really an arbor... don't know what the cut off size is that makes it become a Pergola...
It's going to be too cool, though... with seating area under it... I'm going to put a picnic table under it...

I just can't believe I'm growing so much food now. Never really grew anything other than tomatoes and peppers before... seems like I've added so much that I can't keep up with what all I have growing now. Planted melons, crookneck squash, and okra seedlings this morning... corn is coming up, pulled my first radishes yesterday... I have carrot tops showing and spinach with tiny leaves on it now. My Celebrity tomatoes are as tall as the tomato cage now, and all six of them have blooms... one has a tiny green tomato on it. The cherry tomatoes and Mountain Pride tomatoes aren't growing as fast, but they're about half way up the cage. Cuke's aren't growing much... don't know what's wrong, if anything. Same with the Zukes. Beets are beginning to sprout... but no signs of the okra seeds I planted. The English Peas are climbing the fence, but only about 6-8" tall now. Got bush beans on the other side of the yard, and they're about 6" tall now. Onions are all getting really tall tops, but I don't know how to tell how big the onion bulbs are yet.
Basically... it's probably the most unorganized veggie garden in Texas... I just stick stuff in the ground where I can find enough sun.
Don's concerned that I'm going to try to convert him to vegetarianism.

Got to go pack now... will be leaving for Denver early in the morning. I'm not taking my computer this weekend, so I'll be out of touch till Monday.

Carrollton, OH(Zone 6a)

You all have to go see what these people have done with there yard"them selves"............Amazing!!!!! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/978925

Hi ladies, my regular pc got infected yesterday and it's in the shop.
Using an old ME OS, and it's quite a challenge loading pages with pics.
So, not posting a lot more than usual. If I'm 'unavailable' you all know why...
Thanks Syn.. I had got a box from Tod last year, and they are very healthy. So, if anyone haven't already took advantage of his offer, do so.
I'll be back as usual, once my pc is fixed.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Love the wind Chime......would really love the Lanterns on the wind chime....

Do you need to mark the eggs for turning also? I thought I read somewhere that you have to turn them so much every so often......we haven't hatched eggs since I was about ten, so I have forgotten a Lot!! Kathy would know.....

Well, by late summer, early fall we won't be seeing much of BJ will we ?...better start collecting canning jars and freezer containers Now!!

Hi Jaye, don't get lost for too long.

Sunny, but cold today...may get an occasional shower.....bad enough that I get to hear about the warm sunny weather from everyone here....now my cousin calls regularly and has to rub it in too:(

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

And yes Trisha... tea eggs for special days, like b'days!

Planting more brugs in sweltering heat :D

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Bj, have a great trip to Denver. Bj, you can open your own roadside veggie saynd! Make a few dollars on the side? LOL

Jaye sorry to hear you are having computer problems! Did you not have an anti virus program running? They still find a way to get in there!

LK

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

LK.. I got 2.. one free and the other subscribed.
Worse was the malware prevented us from using System Restore, now how smart is that???
The geek pro at the repair center, said that nowadays the virus even are smart enough to override anything you try to upload from a disk.

These malicious pranksters must not have a life of their own. I suggest for any caught, send them to Iraq and do battle against the Talibans, if they have that much spare time!

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL... yea, a neighbor came over and asked if he can be my first customer... actually, the told me that he might just reach over the fence and help himself... gonna have to watch that one.

I suppose I should start thinking about canning jars... UGH... one more thing to find a place to store... sheesh. I should probably look into some canning supplies too... pots, funnels, jar lifters... oh, there's way to much to think about. I'll think about that when I see my first Cucumber.

I'm thinking that maybe I should have paid attention when my mom and grandma used to can stuff... I haven't a clue what I'm doing.

OR... perhaps Kathy will come help me and teach me how to do it !!!! Whacha think Cuz?

Carrollton, OH(Zone 6a)

I have one of those vaccuum sealers and it is wonderful to freeze things.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

BJ, have a good trip to Denver.
Dunno whether it's been asked before. Is Mike an only child? He certainly doesn't behave spoiled.

Tina in MB, hope you're not affected by the fire. Would have called you but all my info is in the other pc :(

Catch me later everyone.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I gave up my big Seal a Meal and got the Zip Bags with the little hand held Air extractor and I like it a lot better. The extractor is $9.99 doesn't take up any more room than a hand held can opener and you can get it, and the bags at almost any grocery store.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Duuuuuuuuh... what was I thinking.
Found it Tina, in dmail :D Will call you tonight, being you're working right now.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Yes Tina, please check in.....prayers for all of those effected by the fires............

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Nope, Jaye... Mike is the middle son of three. Over there they call it the "sandwich" child... Older brother Christof is out of school, and working for an oil distributor... and younger brother Thomas is still in Lower Secondary school (equivalent to our Junior High). He's not spoiled... at all. Too bad I can't keep him...

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I know your going to miss him, when he goes back home! But you have a girl all lined up for next year right?
LK

Myrtle Beach, SC(Zone 8b)

Hi girls !! Thanks for thinking of me. So far this fire is across the waterway from MB. North MB is being affected from the smoke. It apparently has destroyed about 70 homes and 7,000 acres. It has been really hectic at work as the National Guard is bringing in helicopters to dump water on the fires. And of course they need fuel. A man from the Forestry Dept. was in this morning and said that the fire was probably started be someone burning trash- yard debris. The day it started the winds were 30 mph or more. Not good conditions to burning anything.

I hope every one is fine. I don't post much.. ya'll go way to fast for me!!

Take care and hugs to all !!

Coushatta, LA

Hi LK,i won't get that many eggs today.I'm blowing smoke out of my ears right now.Something got one of my Mama hens last night.Don't know what it could have been.Know holes were dug.All i can think of maybe an owl are something climb the fence and got it.Rob has been out their all day putting shadecloth and wire on the top so nothing can get in.Looks like i will be putting that only one egg in the incubator.Yes,i do mark down when she layed it and when it goes in to the bator.

BJ, should we just save our jars for canning for you rather NO--wait a minute. Sending our jars to you WOULD be repurposing them. Now I know what to do with mine, I might be able to join that swap. Right? LOL Have a great time on the trip to Denver. Lucky you!!!

The only thing I can remember about canning with my MIL was not to use salt with the iodine on the tomatoes we canned---as it makes them cloudy--well so she said. Tomatoes don't last that long around here so we could tell.

Hello Tina from MB, so glad you checked in. Worried with those fires but now you have posted I will be okay. Miss you when you don't post.

No good about the computer, Jaye. I am in total agreement that people who do those things to infect computers definitely need to get a life. Other thought but can't post them--might throw me off the site.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Cody, so sorry to hear you lost one of the ducks! If something dug, it could be a dog, maybe another wild animal?
Good luck in finding the culprit.
LK

Coushatta, LA

That is just it LK,nothing was dug. There was know holes. What ever it was it took it all. There was nothing left of her only feathers.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Sorry Cody, I would definitely cover the enclosure or pen them up at night. Would get me a loudmouthed "Watch Goose" to go with them too!! Uncle Bill always had a couple of Geese in with his kazillion ducks!

Coushatta, LA

Thanks Trisha,i'm going to start pening them up at night.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Cough.. cough... darn Tina, you're sending smoke signals? Glad you're not affected.
Loris, Whiteville and our town getting some thick smoke from the fire. Hope MB contain that soon. We're inhaling smoke even though we had the truck's windows rolled up, all that time getting dinner, and returning.
We're about 30 miles from the fire, guess the winds are blowing this way.
I thought burning trash in any yard is illegal? It is here, even though for those that live in the countryside. We need the Fire Dept.'s permission if we wish to do so. Anyway, these few days have been very windy.. don't understand why that 'idiot' didn't think!!

So sorry Cody, I missed your call. Maybe it could be a fox, if there's any gap, the fox will get through, it will. Yep, owls or chicken hawks will swoop into pens too.

Trisha, some guineas will make good watch fowls too.

BJ, I bet when Mike return back to Austria, he'd be showing his mum his new gardening knowledge. If only he can make some strudels, won't we have a feast in May!!
I for one will look forward to your grown veges!

Maid M, how's your sinuses? We at first thought what Kel got is sinus related, but it's like a summer cold now.
Poor Kel certainly lost his appetite. He didn't eat much at his fav Mexican place. Ordered just Carnitas. Normally, he'd have a side dish of either Chilli Relleno or Tamale followed by a fried ice-cream.
But whatever's bothering his lungs are breaking up, and coughing them out! He cheekily said he'll be 'cured' enough for your lemon pie in May!!!

Still using the old pc.. slower than molasses...

If I don't return, you all have a good night's sleep.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Goodnight everyone.

Cody, you keep an eye on those babies! Get your shotgun ready!

LK

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Sinus are clearing but I am still having some difficulty with my ear and fluid being retained in it. That is what is giving me the balance problem. Tell Kel to just rest and recover--summer colds are the pits.

Was invited out for pizza at the last minute by the granddaughters. Was fun but I didn't get the first olive on mine. The youngest one is an addict and was picking them off. When asked why she did order them on her pizza she informed us "grandma's are better". Go figure!! Kids!!

Well it certainly got warm here today---more like hot!! Oh please don't let summer temps be here this early, just a few more days of cooler weather before we go into the sweltering days of heat.

Cody, sorry about your duck. Jaye is right, fox or maybe even a coyote? I assume you have coyote there.

Well, I am off to bed, tired for all the climbing and loving I got tonight. Not complaining as I enjoyed every minute but oh my body is tired.

Raleigh, NC

sweet dreams sweet ladies. can't hold my eyes open. read about halfway down this thread catching up. wow there's been a lot to be thankful for and an lot to pray about tonight.

see ya in the morning. got my new computer glasses on - they work great. Took the load of compost over to my sister for them to unload. I'm going back in the morning. figured I needed one more day to recoup before I want to do that kind of work. But I'm tickled to death that I even feel good enough to consider doing it. ate out twice today, stayed away from sweets, fried foods, fatty foods, salty foods, and ate lots of veggies and salad. that's the start of my getting my b/p back down. with all the dragging around of my girlfriend with her errands and with getting glasses, we easily doubled the amount I have been standing and walking, so that's great.

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Cody... Marion may be on to something there. You know that April and May are high coyote feeding months due to them weening their young this at this time. Coyotes only reproduce once a year, in mid winter. Their young are born around March, and they start hunting to bring back meat for the young to eat starting at 4 weeks... April, May.
This is gross, forgive me... They don't usually go near homes, or residences... but domestic animals (ie, caged animals) are a quick meal if they're desperate for food, and don't usually involve hunting. They can also clear an 8' fence.
Sorry dear... but if it is a coyote, and you don't do something to deter them... they'll clear your entire pen of ducks before they move on.

Carrollton, OH(Zone 6a)

Just seen this posted in the General Discussion Forun:

st. joseph's hospital

301 prospect ave
syracuse, ny 13203
thank you for your thoughts and prayers. paul

I'm going to try and send a card, and thought if any others would be interested here is the info.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Thanks Synda, good idea!

I may be human in a few days!!!...Thanks to Laura, we managed to get a prescription for my meds without having to get an appointment!!! Depression is a very ugly, miserable place when you don't have medication...I am just so thankful for Laura, and Susie (the therapist that I get my scripts from) don't know how I would get by without them.

Had sun for most of the day....on the chilly side....a few rain showers tonight. We need some wind and rain right now! We were waiting for Sage at school yesterday and I was watching the trees...there was a light wind.....the pollen from the evergreens looked like a cloud of yellow/green smoke blowing around the trees...no wonder we are all sniffing and sneezing!! A good hard rain would settle a lot of that out of the air.

Carrollton, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh my dear sweet Trisha,I know so very well where you are coming from,I'm on Cymbalta and xanax and I still have to work very hard many days to stay on the bright side.Helping others and trying to cheer other up and my flower are sometimes what keeps me going.

Carrollton, OH(Zone 6a)

I told my DR I wanted to quit smoking and wanted that new pill and he told me at this point in my life it would be worse on my health mentally to stop.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

It was hard to do but after smoking for almost thirty years I did manage to quit. I did the stepdown patches...it was a miserable time but I made it and it has been one of the best things I have ever done for myself....the gal that got me off smoking also diagnosed my depression and got me on my meds.....she died of cancer about six months later......we sure do miss her.

Carrollton, OH(Zone 6a)

Well just like today,my stepdad was told today that he is laid off.I have a very ill mother that takes many meds and has to have her blood checked all the time.Because she has a heart disease that she is dying from, and without any one pill she could die.And now they have no Ins.So I have been in a very bad place today.

Poor Rick,I was such a "B" to him and I did apologise but he was all I had to get my frustrations out on.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

It really is difficult right now. We can't afford insurance...but we make too much for low income insurance....if one of us has an accident or gets really ill, I don't what we would do. Our finances are really tight especially in the winter when we have really high utility bills......couldn't get in to see anyone who would write a prescription for my meds so have been off them completely for a couple of months.......isn't too bad if I don't get stressed but this past month has been really high stress....and that isn't good. My kids are as honest as they come but they said several years ago that they would pick up cans or rob a bank if that is what it took to keep mom on her "crazy meds" cause when momma ain't happy ain't nobody happy!!!

Carrollton, OH(Zone 6a)

I call them personality pills...............LOL.

Thumbnail by synda
(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Yep, was definitely getting on my own nerves recently!

Carrollton, OH(Zone 6a)

I've told momma it is pretty bad when you can't stand to be with yourself.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I am hoping now I can get some energy back and get a few things done....the past few weeks to quote my mom "I ain't been worth shootin' " Now if we can more than two days worth of good weather in a row...things would be great!
