Not the best picture, but this scent is filling the air right now.
Part Seis: Breathe Deep and Tell us what Smells Wonderful
LOL Nery!!
F4F - 1) what is that last photo of & 2) Your holstii's leaves look different then mine...so confused over the Tabs - speaking of....I've been hovering over my one sole bud since what Jan or Feb? One of my adult DD's (not that anyone will admit it) must have hit it w/their towel (it's in my bathroom by my window) and decapitated the bud. I can not begin to tell you how upset i was. I've had this baby for coming up on a year....this was her first bitty bud and it was just beginning to separate - I could see bits of white...very - very sad. I've shoved it into the soil and keep misting it. I could catch an amazing scent...just barely this AM/
I'd say that is good reason for killing all of them! And my Holstii is the same as Chantell's and it does look different indeed - the leaves are much larger
Chantell, we did a little investigating/picture swapping one time and I felt confident that yours WAS T. holstii. Leaf size can vary, so you really need to see the flower to differentiate the tabs. But, there are others on DG that have way more ID expertise than me........
So heartbreaking about your lost bud! Mine started with one or two and then got churning- hope yours does, too!
The last picture I posted is Artabotryus hexapetalus, or climbing ylang ylang.
Do they only bloom 1x/year, do you know? I keep hoping maybe she'll go ahead and open - I know kinda wishful thinking but maybe? Forgot about all those pics - that's right....LOL OH the MIA brain strikes again....
They tend to have a spring flush and then bloom intermittently until it gets cool. Yours will be on a different timeline than mine since we get longer warmer days before you do.
Well, Chantell, we just hafta be patient - all my fragrants/tropicals are now outside and enjoying a pampered life on the deck, under cover, filtered water & over prized fertilizers ^_^
LOL....then you have me with the gal jug of fish emulsion from Southern States and the Black strap molasses from Booth Feed...LOL....too funny, if you think about it.
Ok...last question (ha, you KNOW better) what type of lighting do the Tabs prefer AND the also lighting for the climbing ylang ylang. Last year I had them both in part sun and they seemed to do fine...just double checking with you esp. since the poor YY lost all her leaves (but still green in that trunk so I'm sure she'll start leafing out once out doors)
Candela my Michelia looks just like yours, I've given it a dose of Ironite but so far it seems to still have those leaves, other than that it's very healthy looking. I think I do recall that Michelia's do want acidic soils. This website has some great info on them

My rangoon creeper is about to put on a show it's loaded with hundreds of buds, even though only about 10 or so clusters are open so far, just one little flower has a strong scent.
Chantell....I just sprayed fish emulsion this morning now that you reminded me...thanks...LOL...kind of takes the "yummy" smell out of the garden...hopefully it disappears quickly.
By the way...so sad to hear your clove died, I don't know what mine is doing, it seems to take off then stunt, then take off again, right now it's going slow but I'm excited that I have quite a few leaves on it....
F4F, thanks for posting the climbing ylang ylang bloom, hopefully I'll get one on mine oneday, it seems to be a very slow growing plant for me, just sits there at the same size.
Glad to report I finally sniffed a Brugmansia...Miss Emily Mackenzie bloomed for me last night....it is wonderful scent, now I know what you're all talking about. The poor thing got everything sniffed out of her....I called all my neighbors around to smell her LOL, none of us have ever seen/sniffed a brug before...how crazy is that.
Oh you ALL!! I'm simply drooling here!!! Glad everyone brought up the yellow leaves and the michelia - I was worried about mine...same issue.
Candela! So good to see you over here! Lots of nice pics you have. Your Michelia looks like it's generally hungry to me (not just iron), and possibly may have some microscopic mites aggravating the chlorosis. You've got me intrigued about that brunfelsia 'manaca'- how does it compare to B. americana?
ASTCgirl- your first bruggie........YIPPPPEEE! So happy for you. I have Pakalana and rangoon creeper envy.
Speaking of envy, nice Nicotiana! I still have never smelled them, and mine are being eaten alive by mites (praying for the rainy season.)
Chantell- those plants will take full to partial sun.
Tah tah for now ladies!
Ahhh Nicotianas - one of my FAVS!!! F4F - for whatever the reason some of them seem more prone to mites/aphids....my 'Fragrant Clouds' don't attract them nearly as much as the big one that I've now lost the name of...ugh...MIA brain..again
Thanks for the tip! I'll have to put that variety on my wish list. Did you buy yours or grow them from seed?
F4F - I ordered the last round of Nicotianias - aphids, just spray the heck out of them with a water bottle....
I am so jealous. Here in PA, zone 6, I am waiting for blooms. I am excited that the plants survived the winter!
I've been breaking out the mister bottle with alcohol...so tired of both of those and the fungus knats...however I believe that knats are just about under control
F4F, I'm sure I'll have tons of Nicotiana seeds to share pretty soon. Anyone who has never smelled a Nicotiana is welcome to dmail me for seeds!
Chantell - your fragrant cloud is growing right in the middle of my grandiflora. They almost smell the same, which is, MAR-VE-LOUS, lol!
Mock Orange is in full bloom now. Smells great!
Ah Roberta so glad to hear the babies grew so well for you...it's an amazing scent, is it? And glad to hear someone speak well of the Mock Orange..I now have 2 varieties - one growing in front and one planted in my back yard...hoping for blooms next year...fingers crossed.
My neighbor has a a living fence on two sides of her property consisting of Ligustrum. Many people don't like ligustrum but no question it is one of those spring smells. It makes me sneeze, but I don't find it terribly objectionable.
At first she pruned them in formal fashion like you would boxwoods, but ligustrum grows so fast, it was being trimmed every 2 mo. She finally gave up and let them grown like trees. They are about 5-6 ft tall and she only trims the bottoms a little bit so pets can walk thru it.
My honeysuckle is just starting to bloom. It has no scent, yet. This is unusual. Otherwise it looks very healthy.
Nice shots, Bec!!! Found that Scotch broom at HD as well! Same price no worries.
