I love all the container ideas, too!
KatG has inspired me to use more colorful/textured foliage plants rather than "just flowers"; needless to say, I'm REALLY into coleus now.
DG71, have you thought about that for your planters? Here's my favorite so far this year - but it's still early ;)
Chocolate Mint & Fire Dragon coleus with an oddball ivy that needed a home.
Container Renovations 6! (smile)
Here's an interim planting of a coupla Rosy Dawn Co-op coleus (From L-R: Nosey Rocko Cat, Solar Shadow & Aurora Black Cherry coleus).
Hopefully I'll "move 'em up" to a larger container tomorrow. As I have Solar Shadow in full sun, it looks nothing like it's picture but I still LOVE IT! Figure I'll take a pinch, place it in the shade for comparision.
Helenethequeen...Can you tell us what is in your post #6493511? Guessing hydrangea, fuchsia and ?.
These are some phenomenal containers you are all posting! Can't start mine for about 2 more weeks, but I sure am getting some great ideas!...Looks like Kat has a lot of us thinking in different directions...
I've also been using the wet floral green stuff in the bottom of my hanging baskets to help retain water.. it's working great cause those cocoaliners sure don't hold water too well!
What about some bacopa also?

Yes Delphinium, bloomed in January with the Norfolk pine (which I just couldn't throw out) had some marigolds and begonias, which are now hidden by the Delphinum's 2nd growth. These are not the "Fountain series Delph."
Yes, Hydrangea and Fuchsia. Thats all. The green stalk on top are starting to show the flower buds. Will post new pix when completely mature.
Denisemb - Sweet Potatoe vine "Margurite" would be nice with the coleus
Dahlia, Grown in pot now blooming in Florida.

Oh, helene - I got into trouble growing sweet potato vine last year! LOL I was cutting hunks off & sticking it in all my containers last year.
The funniest part is that after pulling it all out after the frost, 4 little sprouts popped up this spring! So once it gets going, I'm sure it'll be added here and there ;)
I don't see trouble I see beauty.....Don't You?? Helene
agreed! not trouble! BEAUTY!!
Dirtygirl,
There is a better discussion forum on here for brugs. The link is http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/brugsetc/all/
Tina
thanks Tina.... I would just like to know the "specifics" before I share.
The Brug peoples would LOVE to help you out - that's what they do! When you find out let us know. They are beautiful. With the two colors you have two trees near each other I take it?
BTW I grew up in Brandon 1974 - 1985 back when there was no MALL!
bluekat76. . .it's only ONE TREE!
Everyone: gorgeous planters/ideas! I just planted a 2 ft tall desert rose in a planter, and am looking for plants to fill it out that will complement. Any ideas/experience with that? Man, the first picture with the ornamental kales got me just about drooling. I've got to find out where I can find it! katG, I'm in Florida too, do you just keep your planters in full sun?
Froukje
Froukje: The ornamental Kale is just gorgeous and I picked those up about 3 months ago at Target! They always have plants that really don't fit into your zone and these don't. I didn't expect them to last this long in the heat, but that planter is just gorgeous right now and I need to take another photo. I'm happy to have gotten the pleasure out of them for this long!
As far as your Desert Rose. I'm not that experienced with them but I do have one that I bought last year. It wasn't doing well until I started decreasing the water. I was watering it with the rest of the container jungle and NO - it doesn't need it and started flowering nicely. I have it under the pool cage in semi-full sun all day.
If you're going to plant anything with it, you need to plant something complimentary that has the same water requirements. Maybe some nice succulents that aren't that thirsty!
Hey Marianne:
Good to see you...how is your Candy-floss fern doing? Mine is just not liking it here on my lanai!!! Brown spots and everywhere I water it it clumps all up!
Kat
Lise: I hate pulling stuff out too, but that grass just went nuts! I just took it and transplanted into the ground outside the pool cage! That's what I do with a lot of plants that have just gotten to large for containers.
jeri: your fountain looks great! What is the top purple plant? I have something really similar that I bought here called "joyweed".
Irwells...I LOVE your containers. Just wait until they start really growing. You have such pretty and different textures in them...Very nice!
Hi Jeanne...hope you're well! Oh, I just so love my herb planter. When I'm cooking, I just go out there and grab handfulls of herbs...It's intoxicating! I also have a couple of large pots of Rosemary growing...the scent is amazing, especially when you're watering. I think I'm going to take some of this rosemary and put it in oil, strain it and make a soap out of it!!! Gardeners soap!!!
Helene...Your pots are looking just gorgeous!!! I was also on the recipe section today looking for a desert and came across your beautiful chocolate masterpiece...The name eludes me right now (something waves?) You sure are one talented woman!
Kat
Hi Katg, I'm doing a little better. I've been down this week.
My yard crew came today so I had them remove three of the large red tip ferena
shrubs and put in some hardy hibiscus. Two Texas Star on each side of the window with the red double hardy hibiscus in the middle. They are small but they will grow.
I got some real pretty pots of begonias for the patio at Lowe's for $1.50. I thought that was a good price. Finally got a Patio company to bid on my patio cover. It should be built in the next two weeks. It's out of structual steel. The owner says his has gone thru three hurricanes, so hopefully it will be good and strong.
Have a great weekend!
Jeanne
Hi Jeanne: I've been down this week also...Woke up a week ago with this crazy chest cold that I'm having a hard time shaking. Your patio structure sounds interesting...you have to post photo's. Have you seen those cool "Escargot" begonias? They almost look like a seashell...everywhere I find them, they're sold out.
Take care
Kat
Denise...don't you just love the Coleus? I love your combo of Chocolate and Mint with the Ivy. The only problem I have is that they get so darned big. Do you keep yours trimmed/pinched back? I just pulled some out of pots from last year that had stalks the diameter of quarters. The great thing is though, I just took clippings from the top, stuck them into some little pots and I now have new plants!
Dirtygirl...I've never heard of using the floral stuff in the coco liners but it sounds like a real good idea! Somebody also mentioned that you could line them with disposable diapers? Makes sense.
This week, I have totally given up on my hanging baskets in my potting area! What a pain they've been with the current plants I have in them - Verbena!!! They flower a lot but you need to dead-head them, otherwise it's this big dried out looking plant. The winds have been crazy lately and I'm watering everyday...not worth it. I need to find something else to plant in these hanging pots. Oh and by the way, I replaced the coco-liner pots with plastic, because I just thought they dried out too much. I think it's anything I put up there! Any suggestions?
Thanks for the tip! I'll be looking at pics of succulent planters! So excited about having some planters for the first time!
Hi KatG!!! As usual your lizard room looks great!!!! Thanks for the compliment on my fountain. The top is New Guinea Impaients, 2nd row is Althernatha Red Thread and finally the bottom is salmon verbena. I didn't buy them to go together but they were left overs and fit the fountain.
Beautiful planters, KatG
Irwells - Nah, I don't think so, but then again, you see how I cram my pots! Very pretty and I really like your little plant stands!
KatG,
That tomato looks so good, I can't wait until mine start growing bigger. YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
