Container Renovations 6! (smile)

San Diego-ScrippsR, CA(Zone 10a)

Nice containers, all. Great ideas to think about. Our lizards here are very small and they often lose their tails to our cats. Snakes, tho, are a different ball game--rattlesnakes. I've come across them at the nearby lake where I walk. Dh says a few months ago a woman got bit (another area) and had to be taken to the hosp where the anti-venom treatments cost her several thousand dollars. I remember those old westerns when the cowboys would just suck the venom out with their tongue and tie a tourniquit. (sp?) But my biggest fear is the tarantulas--they hang out around new construction. Lucky for us they have all moved away. They're pets to some people I guess. Harmless maybe. But not in my dreams. Hate those fuzzy legs!

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

I had a possum sleeping in my potting soil. Or should I say "pretended" to be sleeping. I took the bag out of the garage and tipped it over in the driveway. Pretty soon it wandered off into a tree.

Fort Myers, FL(Zone 10a)

Kat, mine is still alive, but not looking too good with the brown areas. I'm tempted to separate it, water one more than the other and see which looks better. I got a wind chime hung today that I've had around for a couple of years and had no one to help me with it. I can barely lift it (50+ lbs!!) Now, I'm sitting around waiting for a breeze!!!

Baker, LA(Zone 8b)

Eclecticuno, I love windchimes, especially large one. Please take a picture and show us.

50 pound windchimes???? I would love to see that too!

According to the website, ours were 44 lbs - took several people to hang them

Baker, LA(Zone 8b)

Niiiiiiiiice...I have several in my back yard. One I've had for at least 20 years. I've had to restring it. I refused to throw it awya. Where did you get yours? I'd love to get a huge one and I think that will be it for me. I would like to make one myself from a kit. That would be the only way I could afford a huge one.

San Diego-ScrippsR, CA(Zone 10a)

Wow! That huge wind chime is a first for me. Love it.

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

No way I could make one myself! The are kind of interesting in that they aren't attached by holes in the tube, so they echo for a long time. I think we have bass, tenor and alto. We bought the first one in San Diego years ago while we were there for a seminar. Here's their website -

They aren't cheap -

Baker, LA(Zone 8b)

WOW... yes I see. They aren't cheap is right. That's why I was going to go for a kit. All you have to do is put them together. See the following 2 web sites.

I was looking for a place to put my two container pics and saw that corn snake. Wimpy me, I would have died 1,000 deaths right there. But I am curious, KatG, was the bag opened and sitting around or was this a brand new bag and the snake was in it? I am really bad about leaving opened soil bags around 'cause I'm too lazy to put them back in their designated place afterwards.

The other day I was looking at some pots that I got 2 yrs ago from Lillian Vernon and as I was lifting the pot (luckily no snake) the pot fell apart. I made a big mess. Do not waste your money on L. Vernon garden items. They have lots of pretty things but they will never be garden heirlooms, lol. Anyhoo, after this happened, my husband reminded me not to stick my hand in a pot w/o looking first for snakes coiled inside. ugh!

here is the pot completely desintegrated.

a good rule in container gardening is to put plants with like moisture needs. I found a way to work around it. I was needing a tall plant for a container and the only thing I had was succulent MIL tongue. As you can see, the rest of the plants are rather thirsty ones.

Thumbnail by vossner
East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

so......in order to have my cake and eat it too, I potted the MIL in a separate container and sunk it in the pot with the thirsty plants. When I water, I take care to pour the water on the thirsty plants only. The contained MIL gets none and since I put a plastic saucer under it before sinking, roots on MIL do not wick moisture from rest of plants. (I hope this makes sense).

It is working.

I just discovered this forum and you guys are so full of ideas! I just finished planting a big pot I got with several different sedum and annual plants after I saw some of your containers photos. I really like how things look all jumbled together. My husband even commented on how nice it looked! I used to be a one plant per pot planter, but you guys have inspired me to mix, match and try stuff. Keep posting pictures, It inspires us lurkers!

Hey KatG, is this your garden? I just received the HGTV e-mail and I see that your picture is featured as one of the "Gardens We Love." Congratulations on your fame!

Congrats KatG--I would recognize your "head planters" anywhere! And of course all the rest of it, too.

Hey KatG,
Where are you at?

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Tina...I'm at my computer sending out sales receipts!

OMG!!!!!!

This has been the craziest thing...It's been like "As seen on Oprah!"

Thank-you GardenSox for letting me know about the HGTV thing...I got home late last Friday night and all of a sudden all these orders kept coming though...I had no idea where from until I came on here the next day! I certainly cannot complain, but I just wasn't prepared as I had no idea that HGTV would put me on their marketplace. JUST CRAZY! I have gone through my stock and also cleaned out my Supplier of heads...they are now "headless' hahaha

Then...I have a very nice gal in Maryland that bought a couple of planters a couple of months ago for the Garden conservacy tours that her
garden is featured in. She did a great job of planting these heads and I'm now getting the "I seen your heads on the Garden tour"...

Lastly, several months ago I booked a spot at our local Hibiscus festival next Saturday and I was saving my inventory to feature at the sale. Ummmm no! It's all gone, but luckily I have more coming. I also have a ton of other planters to sell. After a week of invoicing/packing and shipping...I've spent the day planting some of these planters to take to the sale.

I would love to sell these pots on Dave's Marketplace, but they are just too heavy to ship...

Planted these one's with topiaries...They are big and I'm not crazy about the underplanting I've done...think I might dig up some pretty caladiums and add them in for some color. The pots are great though! I have about 10 more and if these don't sell, you know where they're going to end up! hahaha

These pots are really gorgeous - They're tin covered in water hyacinth strips. They're huge - about 36" wide. They feel like suede, but will withstand water, weather etc. I planted some small topiaries in them with Persian shield, salvia, begonias and sedum...There is really slim pickings on plants in the month of June in Florida. I really should have been planning a little more than I have been...

Vossner:

Great idea with the "moisture need" plants! Not exactly the same, but they do that with these dish gardens that florist's sell...they don't even have any drainage. They just sink the plants in plastic pots into the soil or peat.

You talk about Lillian Vernon...well Sam's club is kind of the same. I bought 3 big pedestal planters a couple of years ago. I have one left that hasn't broken off the stand. I have some good plants in the existing one and I'm afraid that one of these days when I'm watering it's just going to topple over! Sad isn't it? These things should last longer than this. Your upside down planter with the coleus looks great BTW!

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Jeanne...thanks for posting the photo of your new covered area. That looks "awesome". I'm sure you guys are really enjoyiing that area! NaNa's jungle is beautiful! :)

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Tina...Planters are looking great. Are you enjoying your new climate? Have you finally been able to bring all your plants outside?

Thanks everybody for the congrats on the HGTV feature...

Kat

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Oh BTW Vossner...

Snake was in an open bag that had been on the ground for a little while. Gotta say though...since then, I even check the unopened bags! hahahahaha

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Caladiums have come up from last year and are outrageous! Love them! It's great when you don't have to do anything the next year to have such beauty...

These are some of the plants I have ready to slip into Head Pots for the Hibiscus festival (If I have any heads!) hahaha - These are great plants from Apopka Florida - Exotic Angel brand...

I'm really liking this Hyacinth Bean...It's really starting to cover my planting pergola - the scent is great too!

This is one of my favorites - Pagoda Flower. Was very sick looking in February as I think the cold really got to it, but it's back with a vengeance! I have this in a container and it's just blooming it's little head off!

Really common...but I just love Petunia's. These one's are hanging in really well despite the heat. Usually they've expired by now in Fla
