Do you wait until the new growth hardens off a bit? like--"softwood"?
By "old stick"--do you mean the tip of any branch that is from last year and has new growth on it? How long do you cut the "old"--and how long new growth do you allow?

I am sorry for reaply late , actually I am in other city for the training and this is management training for two months . I really miss you all and also my garden .
Gita your Lilac are stunning and Rocks........ these are white washed pebbles and pebble are very common here. I just collect and gave them shape.....
