No, it was a slip of the brain spin!
What's happening in your spring garden #4
'spin; thanks for the info on the sphinx worm/humming bird moth. I've seen them my whole life from the swamps of Mississippi to the desert of Arizona and now here in So Cal. I would never have made the connection between the two stages of its life.
It makes sense that I saw it near my tomato plants. I'll just keep the diatomaceous (sp) earth handy. A little circle of that around each plant has worked well for me in the past to control their activity.
These are the same guys that burrow into the ground under our native grape and also pollinate evening primroses and orchids! Amazing things. Sorry 'bout the tomatoes, though.
here's a wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawk_moth
Those moths also are very active at night...at least here. The property next door to me has Lonicera growing on the fence that separates the properties and it's in full bloom at the moment. Last night I went out there and there must have been 50 of them going crazy over the blooms.
During the day, they rest around the eaves and underneath my arbors.
When the solar lights kick on at night, they're all over the place.
My cats go nuts trying to catch them, and when they do, they eat them.
I don't even want to go there...
