Let’s Swap some plants! II Ric & Holly’s

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

"as many plants as usual" Ahh but I know you Critter. Your perspective of "just a few" and everyone elses' perspectives are very different. And if you get a good wind, you could pack that SUV in no time ^_^ Sorry to hear that Terry won't be coming. Hope you can get her to change her mind.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Teri has fun family stuff that came up for Saturday... I know she's wishing she could be in 2 places at once!

OK, I need to get downstairs to check on the basement light shelves... hopefully most of the seedlings are still with us! There are 2 flats of basil that weren't with the rest, and I'm thinking they might have been missed (there's a lot to water down there)... so cross your fingers, but if I can't bring basil seedlings I'll bring basil seeds (they grow pretty quickly when direct-sown, too).

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Chantelle---

The Alocasia "African mask" sure is a spectacular plant---BUT........it is a bit 'temperamental" to grow in the house.....I used to have one--and slowly learned it's "habits"....and then, after about 4 years, watched it die!
For one--it likes a time of dormancy during the winter months here.....this means, it will probably lose every leaf on it and rest.....don't water hardly at all during this phase....
I also always grew it in a clay pot.

The base of the plant will, slowly, grow into a slim, tip-of-an-onion-like "bulb". (Just recounting this from my own experience with this plant...).
When the growing season came--and I put it outside--it started growing all new leaves....etc...etc....
I think these "jungle-type" of plants need huge amounts of humidity.
I group them with all the other finicky ones, like--Gingers, Calatheas, Anthuriums, Cordylines, etc......NOT easy in the average home!
WHO is it that writes articles about these type of plants? I know the African mask was in one of them...

Good to have you back, Jill. i was wondering what happened to you??????

Gita

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Great information, Gita!! I go through spurts of what I'm interested in...looks like the fragrant tropicals will be an ongoing love at this point. That being said (even though many will be moved outdoors the for the next 4-5 months), I need to adopt out the ones that don't fall into that category so that I can prioritize my space for the babies come fall time again. I was "slightly" disorganized this past fall and I'd like to do a better job with them this go around. So the African Mask (which is VERY dormant but alive) will be with me to go to whoever wants her. If space permits I'll have a few Bromeliads & other tropicals to find homes for as well.

ALL: I've updated my list http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6389865 - to include what folk have requested. Please let me know if anyone is interested in anything else or if I've forgotten anyone's request. Bec and I will have limited space with the cooler (drinks) etc in car so I'm only bring min. extras (items that haven't been specifically asked for)

Gita, You asked me about bringing a patio unbrella or two. Yes if you feel like bringing one. That would work. We don't have a lot of shade but there is some and I know a few people are bringing pop ups. Please don't feel like you have to bring a ton of stuff (don't want to take away from plant space) LOL,
Everyone is welcome to bring what you want and need for your own swap areas. Table, chairs, umbrellas whatever will make you comfortable. We will have plenty of space to spread out all we want. You don't need to bring extra for me I have some extra tables and seating.
Miatablu, Yes to the toad lily, please.
Sally, Re Rocks, Pick one any one. LOL

Lari_Ann has written a number of DG articles about Alocasias... She breeds them, and she really knows her stuff!

I'm sorry to have been AWOL. I thought I'd be better able to keep up while on the road, but between spotty (or expensive) internet access and just everything we were trying to fit into a day, my DG contact was pretty patchy. I'll spend some time going over the request threads and try to cover everything that I can... I'm sure I'll have some plants to bring, regardless, but I may not have as many of some to go around as I'd hoped. :-)

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)

Well all, tomarrow I'll be baking and packing up for the swap. We are leaving Friday morning so I won't have internet access Friday.
I have been busy all day trying to deal with plants and getting some last minute things together, I don't know what the weather will be like tomarrow, possible rain, so I did not want to wait to get outside things done.
I trimmed up my Buffalo current, I always called it spice bush due to the scent , wrapped up the trimmings in wet newspaper for the swap. I divided some Alba Butterfly bush seedlings didn't get them all done but I'll have a few to offer.
The temp has dropped so I came inside for the rest of the evening. I have another week & 1/2 before I can safely plant any annuals out in the yard.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hi Critter, welcome back :)

Chantell, I'd love the rack, if no one else wants it. Thanks so much, and please let me know what we can offer you in return. Maybe you could come up with a price for it, so we can pay you something, especially if I don't have many plants you want. Did you still want a few dahlias?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'll take a rock too, Holly but maybe one not that big....lol

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I want to see you get that in your car... LOL

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'd have to put the top down for sure.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

and get some air bags

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

I was getting a mental image of Sally driving home with it strapped to her roof!!!

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Chantell - do NOT get any ideas - I know you and rocks!!!!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ohhhhh....like THOSE

Wind - absolutely NO money....truth be known - Becky gave me one of them....we believe in the paying it forward. Nothing needed in return...you're doing me the favor by helping me clear my deck so there's room for my big pots!!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

LOL, We have plenty of rocks to go around and a size that will fit in everyone's cars. Mine are brown stone, Jamie has iron rock at his house only 3 miles away. Maybe he will bring some of those over, too.
Those of you that asked for Black Pussy Willow it doesn't look too good. Vickie was here the other day with a bucket of cuttings and they don't seem to be rooting. I guess we will see what we have on swap day.

Crozet, VA

If you are reading this, please look beside your name and make sure that I have listed all that you asked for. If not, get back to me ASAP. Drive safe everyone!!
And if someone wants the Black Pussy willow...mine finally started rooting after a month in the water...needless to say it's plenty rooted now!! LOL I have more then I need so could bring a couple if someone wants it.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Everyone have a safe trip!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

My black pussy willow cuttings rooted well and had even started putting out new leaves before I left... I put one pot outside and kept one inside by the window, sort of hedging my bet... but it looks like both of them have now lost their leaves, so my fingers are crossed... I may have to ask for a cutting again next spring, or with luck maybe I'll be able to offer cuttings. :-)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Well, my black pussy willow, I divided into two pots of dirt after a few roots in water, Then left in the morning sun side of the shed. With all the rain they all look great. I can bring a pot if wanted?

Hmmmm,,,,picturing a boulder on top of my van HA HA HA wish I was good with photoshop and could make you a real, unreal, image!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Mine looked great before I left, and nothing else in bigger pots like that (inside or out) looks like it suffered from lack of water, so I'm not sure what happened with my pussy willow cuttings. But they're still a bit green, so I'm hoping they'll resprout. I really want one as a centerpiece for a new bed, so I'd be glad if somebody had an extra... however, since I have at least some chance of still ending up with one here, it seems like somebody else should have dibs. I can wait until next year if mine really are toast. :-)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I would love some black pussy willow... PLLLEEAAASSEE

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Forgot I promised some patients some of these - will bring what I can. These are cuttings I rec'd in Feb.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I'll bring at least a couple, in one of the pots I did. Small but I bet they grow fast.
Erm, Chantell, did I ask anything of you? Still got a canna for me? A Black Knight, please?

onewish- maybe you still have a little Lantana, please? if you end up getting my Black Pussy Willow?

As if I really need more plants!! I'll have some odds and ends un-spoken for, hope they are of interest to somebody.

Nisi/Kat, I'm bringing you Pink & Yellow Yarrow & Peachleaf Bellflower.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I asked for one of your petunias .... please

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Nisi - I'd love a daisy - those are awesome! ^_^

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Nisi, I have you down for a couple of alpine strawberries. If you still have any Rosa Bianca eggplant, I'd like to give it a try.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

RRR/Teri - I checked tonight....neither of the passi's have come up yet...I'm so sorry. I should have plenty later on in the season though....so send me a reminder and I can ship one to you...ok?

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

NisiNJ, I will bring those LA lilies 'Royal Sunset', it's on my list, and...

miatablu, I will have tags for you as well. I might bring the material and cut some to suit whatever people might want

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Clay, I'm not certain if I'll manage to fork up one of those honking hunks of hostas tomorrow or not... (depends how I'm doing in the morning)... if not, is there anything else I can bring you? Columbine, maybe? (I don't remember which colors you got from me previously) I probably won't dig any daffs until after their foliage ripens, but maybe I can repay you with some bulbs later on.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Folks, Can everyone please check my have list to make sure I've not missed any requests.

I've stopped updating my want list, so if you don't see an item you've offered there, it's not because I don't want it. It's just, I'm behind in my work. Thanks

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

claypa- I think I'd like a nice " fleur de lis" plant tag - cut that 4 me? LOL! Do you know common wild white Silene? I use it in wooded shade, it isn't showy like an annual or fancy perennial but the white flowers do light up the shade. Will bring one to try, then it may reseed for you, but not aggressively.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

NisiNJ - gotcha covered on the Canna - if you have a "spare" gloriosa daisies remaining, I'd love to have one for my "yellow/orange/red" side of the yard. Would you like some cuttings from my Rosemary bush?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Nisi--

I will have some extra purple daturas--they just are still SO small! I am sure they will grow once planted....

I would like a Gloriosa daisy also--if you have enough.
The only Basil I have a lot of is the Lemon/Lime one. Nothing unusual....Also still small--like everything else for me this year......:o(

Thanks, Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, if you've got extras, please bring those lemon & lime basils... I'm still sorting out what survived downstairs, and a couple of the basil flats are looking pretty patchy, so I won't have as many extras as I'd hoped. Citrus basils are always fun! And until a couple of years ago, the Lime was quite unusual -- only source I knew of was DeBaggio's.

Oooh, Sally, great idea on the plant tags! ;-)

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

Darn it - I KNEW I shouldn't have begun reading this thread. It sounds like y'all are going to have a really great time, and I envy all who get to see Holly & Ric's place - just the photos she's posted of all their projects have been so amazing and inspiring.

Have a time time (do I even need to say that?!!), and I hope you have better weather than what's in the forecast for here. Take lots of pictures to share with those of us who couldn't come to play!

Barb

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill,

Will do!

The Basil is from YOUR seed--about 2 years ago....remember? You said the lemon and lime had gotten mixed up--so I just call it Lemon/Lime......

Will bring a few cell packs of it--we can cut them up in individual cells for people....
I am bringing my gardening scissors to cut with.

Gita
