Let’s Swap some plants! II Ric & Holly’s

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Roses, I didn't mean to discourage you in trying to start a get together. I'm sure there would be a lot of interest. Just thought we were trying to keep this thread for swapping. Several people have expressed an interest. Why don't you start a thread so we can get some Eastern Pa. & Jersey folks interested?

Aren't there any DGer's in Delaware? I've never seen anyone except Kubileya post in MA.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Allison,

I would like on or two of your Lantana Sparklers. Thanks...Gita

flowerjen----Do you know what was referred to as "The iron maiden" in history???

Back in the Middle Ages, when people were killed and tortured for no reason, one of the means of torture/killing was a human-shaped case (kind of like a mummy would look like) that was hinged and could open and be shut. EXCEPT--there were spikes all up and down the inside of the door.....The accused person was put inside and the door shut on him/her...UGH! Slow death.....

Here---- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_maiden_(torture_device)

Now--do you STILL like the word?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

well it was one of my favorite bands growing up... so I would have to say yes... and I have you down Gita

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)

Allison, I am just drooling over your list. Since I am low on my over-winter geraniums I would like 2 of your Black Velvet Reds.

P.S. did you catch my thread in MA on the coleus I bought and the Calibrachoa.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

you got it.... no I did not... will have to check that out

Philadelphia, PA

I'm new here. Moved to Philly 3 years ago not knowing a soul here (know lots of people now, but not that many gardeners). Live in a large victorian with old uneven brick patios. Have mostly concentrated on placing larger bushes and trees so I can make the wind kinder to camellias, but this year I want more summer color!
Besides camellias, I'm a nut about weird edibles, winter interest plants and fragrance. Though I know much more from reading then actually growing.
In general I'd appreciate anything (except hosta) blue to lavender that isn't claimed, or deep black red (flowers or leaves), or apricot to home depot orange (that's my signifigant other's taste, not mine).
But I don't have much interesting to share yet....and I'm not yet positive I'll make it to swap. (I hate driving.) Encouragement would help. Or a rider if there's someone from near Philadelphia going?

a two foot tall brugamansia (pale apricot) (first time I rooted something!!)
some rooted plectranthus cuttings which don't look like much but I got same size from Morris plant sale last year and by end of summer it was covered (three feet across) with lavender flowers
winter jasmine
and of course endless day lillies (orange but at least they're mostly very double.)
several echinops, don't know which variety, grows about three feet

What is BES? NOID?
what is pig's ear?

General desires: Peach leaf bellflower?
Did someone have extra trandescantia/ spiderwort? Toad lillies? Wouldn't mind some....
Any: extra basil, yellow or orange (or purpley) tomatoes, peppers

Below are specific plants I saw on people's posts (that did not seem to be claimed) that I would potentially be interested in.... (the posts are a bit confusing.)

Holly:
perilla (if it's purple)
water pickeral?
what color quince?
any particular kind of wisteria? I'm confused about wisteria varieties....

critterologist eryngium? (what type?), obedient plant

flowerjen: wants any full sun true blue (I may have a couple small anchusa).

chantell: passiflora, cypress, night blooming jasmine (?)

wind lunaria

ladygardener any sedona?

kubileye night blooming? (is dragon fruit hard to start?) rose orach??

rubyw ruffled apricot (any of the others purple, deep red or apricot?)

ratherBdigging is it any particular variety of cornelien cherry?

Thanks, ya'all

Midrashist, Welcome!

BES = Black Eyed Susan
NOID = Don't know the cultivar name

You are certainly welcome to have plants even if you don't have trades.
Please do come. I would give you a ride, but with fish tank & stand, chairs, tables and plants etc., have to take all seats out of the van. Talk DSO into driving!!!

My Quince has dark Coral colored blooms and I'll have one & some Peachleafed Bell Flower set aside for you.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I rooted 4 cuttings of the plectranthus I picked up last year at HD and kept the momma... cut it back a month ago like the geraniums... and it's coming back nicely as well

it is beautiful ... and the hummers loved it

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Hi, Critter

I just made a delicious leg of lamb using several spices including my neighbor contribution of jarred lavender.

If you could spare some more or yours, I would surely appreciate having some.

Thanks

Midrashist, Great we would love to have you and are hoping you can make the swap. As Stormyla said you don't have to have a lot to bring to the swap, there will be plenty of plants being passed around. Also you won't be the only new comer to the group, we have several new DG members coming and are looking forward to meeting you all.
Perilla, has reddish-purple leaves with a bronze metallic sheen it's a member of the mint family and is grown for it's foliage. It's a pretty aggressive grower and self seeds. The finches love the seed heads in the fall.
water pickerel, It's a pond plant with a purple flower.
The wisteria, I've had it for years and really am not sure which one it is. Some of them are not as aggressive growers as others. Mine is pretty aggressive but considering how long I have had it I don't think it's doing too badly. I had been planing and hoping to have this up on a arbor (where it belongs) this spring before it bloomed. But that project was put on hold. So it is still sprawing out all over my driveway.

Midra, I don't know much about my Eryngium -- came to me as seeds labeled "sea holly" and hasn't grown tall yet, probably will this year. I'll do my best to share around extra tomatoes and basils, and I do have some black/purple and yellow ones.

RosesR, I haven't had luck with cuttings from my lavender, probably have to set up a cloner to do that. So, no extra lavender plants, sorry. (They're more like a shrub, so there's no dividing them.)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Holly look at the photo of your wisteria .... and drool over the bales of pro-mix... (I need help).... how much do they go for by you?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

onewish--

i LOVE Lantanas--as they do OK in my "YUK" bed....The one with maple roots all over....

When, and how, does one take cuttings from Lantana? I took some seeds last year--and sowed them this Spring, but none came up. WHY?

When I buy Lantana--I have to pay $3.50 for a 5" pot as they are under the category of "Exotic" annuals.......

TOO much $$ for me!!!!

Gita

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes it's nuts... I would think any time is a good time for cuttings... these came in Feb... slow growing but getting there.... I never collected seeds myself... but a friend gave me some... I didn't have luck with them either.... I know non-gardening people don't get the concept of letting the egg turn into a chick when it comes to ripening seeds... they see a seed form and cut it off before they are ready...

but the cuttings were done just like the coleus if you have ever done those.... cut a few inches of plant... removed the lower leaves... dip in rooting hormone... and sick it in some medium... cover it with a dome and wait

and the reason I wanted to try the cuttings so badly... in feb. from NC farms it was $11.00 for 100 cuttings.. and in actuality I could have made cuttings of those cuttings by now... and doubled the lot

paid a lot for shipping... and killed myself for a few days doing all these cuttings... that were paid for by me and my honey's mom... but totally worth it... and if you think of it this way... every rooted coleus from Rosy Dawn... is $5.00... imagine how much I just saved myself... yeah it's all one kind... but I don't care

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Holly, that Wisteria is fabulous. How old is it?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Onewish, LOL I knew someone would covet that. Ric paid $27 ea. he ordered it from a local Hardware Store. Would you like me to see if we can get you one? He had gotten some 2 years ago at a much better price.
Stormyla, About 20/25 years old, it's the same age as the Trumpet Vine on the walkway arbor out front. There was a mix up the Wisteria was to be planted out front and the Trumpet Vine was to be planted back by the driveway.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh well, Holly. It worked out just fine!

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Is it really supposed to rain thru Friday? Lot's of digging/potting to be done!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

onewish--

I would not dare take any cuttings off of my 2 Clematis....They seldom have more than a few stems growing up....gotta wait until there are so many that i would not care!

I have that beautiful, "Multi Blue" one......to die for!!!!

Wow, Gita, That is gorgeous!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh that rain worked just fine for me. Dug up those Ornamental Plum Trees, Forsythia and some Trumpet Vine. Made digging very easy.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

LOL, I know Holly. I did some digging, but it surely makes for some messy potting! At least the plants won't dry up.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh that is pretty Gita... I am not sure if the things I am bringing are going to be hardened off .... our weather is still not trust worthy ... but I will see what I can do

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

At one point, I had to rescue on open tray of polymer crystals that had started to overflow their container!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I am good for that one as well... looked like something out of a horror movie with gels everywhere

Crozet, VA

Won't be long now folks. Midrashists, I marked our list to bring you a Ruffled Apricot Day Lily, and in the colors of purple, deep red and apricot, if we have them. The boss is not here at the moment, so don't know yet if he has extras of those colors or not. I will find out and let you know.

I hope that you will be able to arrange to come. I can guarantee that you will love the people and the food.

Ruby

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

midrashist, that was me with the spiderwort and toad lillies. I'll dig some and pot for you, and please don't worry about swapping anything back. If you need some encouragement to come, you'll find plenty here. Hope you can make it!

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Midrashist, If you have any left, I would like an Anchusa. Thank you!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Just as a side...I have MG's popping up ALL over my front yard - have no idea which kind....it's a surprise blessing (cough) from last years not so brilliant idea. Should any of you want some speak now (soon) or they're being tossed. ^_^

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Chantelle--

I have had the same "brilliant idea" for 2 years now....NEVER again!

YES! The seedlings are popping up all over---I will probably just pull them up and toss them--EXCEPT----I had my Broken Colors 4's in the same spot--and they look identical coming up!!!
Which is which????????

I did dig up the root, and it is showing life....tiny leaf-buds showing....I will be happy with one or two of the 4's.....
