I've never tried it, RC but some say garlic will deter pests.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Huh, I will have to try that. I'm not about to take down any of my fortresses, but I'll try it on whatever get planted out next. It's certainly worth a shot!!

RC, get a male to pee in a bottle for you and sprinkle/spray it around the perimeter. My brother has been pee-ing around his garden for years for that exact reason! lol

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

didn't work! lol. but, it was a good thought. Fortunately it's only 10 or 11 plants!

I keep trying to get Randy to go in the place the ground hogs like to live... he just gives me the look

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

My brother is not a big drinker but the 1st summer he had groundhogs he drank a beer or two every night after work. The first week he invited family, neighbors and co-workers over so he could surround the garden properly! lol
He's crazy as a bed-bug sometimes but he sure does have a green thumb, This is from the man who harvested a pineapple out of his livingroom in the month of Jan.!!

So I guess I should stop yelling at dh to stop peeing around the yard! He'll be extatic! :)

Redchic - I have seen some bulb cages for sale. They are a bit too pricey for my blood but I was thinking they can't be too hard to make some myself. Just have to get around to it. Here is a link to see what I am talking about. http://www.whiteflowerfarm.com/982498-product.html

Dad would pee behind the garage, cuz the only bathroom they had was on the second floor and he had trouble walking so... Then he taught my boys to do it too, when we went to Mamie and Pop-pop's house.

I had an oppossum that would come up on the deck and eat the catfood left out there. It was pretty big, too. Scared me the first time I saw it. Needless to say we brought the food inside.

Meredith - I make my own bulb cages from hardware cloth with 1/2" mesh. They are easy to make, and a lot cheaper than purchasing. Plus you can make them whatever size you want. It takes a little time, but still cheaper in the long run, particularly if you have lots of bulbs and critters with a preference for them.
Another plus to using them is for relocation. Moving a cage full is easier.

Great idea! I'll have to look for hardware cloth- is that something you can get at HD?

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

yes, usually. If it's somewhere where the drainage can take it, I'll cut the bottom off of a something like a 3 or 5 gal. nursery pot and stick that down in the ground along the blulb. The hardware cloth is probably a better long term type thing, but if you're in a bit of a pinch, the pot will stave them off for quite a while.

Too bad you dont live closer I am digging it up by the yard where I wnt to plant Perennials.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

what.... to use your nursery pots? lol

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Meredith - HD has it - Lowe's; most stores that carry fencing materials have it.

When you figure out the dimensions you want the cage to be, don't skimp on depth!
There are 2 ways I make them - both pretty fast.
Corners can be bent over the edge of a 2x4, or concrete step.
If you have a problem with bulbs disappearing, it is worth the time to obtain the hardware cloth & make several.
I got tired of my bulbs disappearing = $ lost.
These work well for me.
