This might sound stupid, But, What is firebush? That sounds like something I might look into trying, The fav here of the hummers are Black and Blue Salvia.
Follow the 2009 Hummingbird Migration!!! Vol.2
I find that in spring they like bleeding heart and in summer cardinal climber and later rose of sharon and of course any morning glory is fare game
Let me see if I can get this link to work. It would have to be grown as an annual where you are. http://floridata.com/ref/h/hame_pat.cfm
I saw my first hummingbird yesterday! I thought I heard one up in the apple tree on Saturday but I never could see him. This is a little later than normal for KY.
They are just so entertaining to watch, much better than tv. LOL
for sure i never watch tv until after dark from spring to fall lol dont have time

Thanks everyone for the info on the oriole feeders. Nice phot Mrs!
Congrats on all the sighting!
I haven't seen anything since my last report... almost every other kind of feathered friends, bluejays, cardinals, robins....
Happy Watching,
-K.
Just saw what I think was a female hummingbird; amazingly right after the last post, 1004 CT. Yay!
-K.
Congrats K and all the others who have had sightings ...I had a female show up this morning also! Maybe spring really is here!!
Happy for you dellrose; and, maybe my sighting is correct--a female.
-K.
I finally have enough here that the chasing has begun. I see someone at a feeder quite frequently now. I have 3 feeders out at different parts of the yard so they can no see each other so while feeding from one, others can have a chance!
gardenpom, Thanks so much for the link! It would be annual in my area, It reminds me so much of honeysuckle vine ( Which hummers love) So maybe I'll get the vine opposed to the bush as they are very similar.
Congrats to those who had the new sightings!!
DH saw a female today. I missed her. He said the male chased her off, so they aren't a pair.
honeysuckle bush get very large up to 10 feet across and high
and the vine takes less room and grow more upward
I have had both and prefer the vine so much better behaved and prettier
scicciarella, I had honeysuckle vine when I lived back in the Northern States and it grew nicely and was very pretty and the hummingbirds loved it.
it is one of their favorite things to go after
mine is back at my old house with my kiwi vines lol
and my grapes lol
have to start all over again
I ruined my birthday surprise since I told my sister that I was getting a wisteria this
weekend and she said oh no dont do that I ordered one for you ohoh that is four years
in a row that I have done it hahahah
Honeysuckle smells so good!
Happy birthday.
Still no hummer... :(
Same here maggie.
Haven't seen my pair since Sunday..sure hope they weren't just passing through...
Brick NJ - Put my feeder out this morning, within 15 mins i had someone buzzing around it!! Nice surprise. He didnt take a drink though, i think just checking it out.
Still waiting here...I put out the oriole feeder this morning too along with some grapes. The apple tree is starting to bloom so they should be here any day now...I hope!
Happy watching nanny_56! A male came back about 10 mins ago, so I'm probably getting more than I see, of course. It's going to be hot here, so I'll be filling up the bird bath.
-K.
I keep watching my feeders as well... nothing yet
my babies are back saw two hummers today they made use of the feeder so I will hang two more tomorrow to keep of them happy
Congratulations sciccarella!!! Did you report them?
yes I did and noticed that they are actually much farthur north of my about six hours
This morning I believe my little male hummer was in a lethargic state at 38 degrees! He was just sitting for the longest time on the feeder perch. Hopefully, it will be warming up this weekend. If I wasn't rushing to work I could have gotten some nice pics LOL.
Mona… so not fair that you have yours and I don't have mine!!!!! LOL!
actually the first group bypassed me and are now about 450 miles north west of me lol
I did put out my red flag hahahahahah
Well I should see one any day, last year was the 26th for me. Then gone for months. boo hoo. (don't forget I'm the whiner!)
hahahhaah I have one of those my youngest is still doing it was much worse before lol it would drvie me nuts hahahahhaah
well then you'll have no problem with ME whining!
i don't have much blooming right now to keep them interested, but Margaret told me about putting out rotting bananas to attract bugs so they can eat them. I think I'll do that today or tomorrow.
red feeders do it for me since not much is blooming yet so the ones that went north of me I hope have found feeders since nothing is blooming up there yet
I think I must have ghostie HB's ...I haven't seen a thing but I had to refill one of the feeders already about a week ago and now both of them are low tonight.........Sure would make me feel better if I could actually see whats drinking it....LOL ...Or does this HB food evaporate ? I put it out last year and don't remember it disappearing with out help..... Karen
I saw 2 for the first time today. I was outside watering and heard that little tweeter sound they make when others are around.
the little guy has been to the feeder half a dozen times this morning and he even went after a female cardinal that was close to the feeder wow he is gutsy this little one
I am gonna start whinning if mine don't show up soon!
I actually put out my red geraniums on the deck and it didnt take long for them to show up
