Follow the 2009 Hummingbird Migration!!! Vol.2

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

I think we are doing competitive birding in our neighborhood. I notice my neighbor has 5 lilacs blooming and they are probably all over at her house! She steals my Pileated, too!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Don't worry T...they will show up...some of the birds in this area seem to be late this year but I am still hopeful.

I saw my first of the year Orchard Oriole on the Oriole feeder about 20 minutes ago...hope springs eternal!!

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Over the years past I have seen them the first week of April this has been a good 2 weeks late. I may bump up my sugar content. I use 1/4 cup to 1 cup of water.

Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

bluegrassmom, I use the same recipe as you do. I've had one hummer for maybe the past three weeks. Once it was resting in a tree near the feeder and another hummer tried to get a drink and the first one chased it off. So, I can't tell if I've got more than one feeding at my feeder since I usually only see one at a time. I wonder if I increase the sugar content if I'll get more hummers.

Beachwood, NJ(Zone 6b)

He's back! My red shirt vigil paid off....so excited, first one this early evening!!! GM (bad pic on hummer thread!)

Marlton, NJ

Congratulations GM!!!!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I had one last year he would fallow the conversation between me and DH going from one to the other which ever was speaking so funny and very attentive hahahhaha I told my sister and she said I must imagining things until she was here and saw it happen and then she was totally blown away

Dixon, IL(Zone 5a)

I got my first rose breasted grosbeak tonight. last year the orioles and hummingbirds were right behind. i have my feeders out so im hoping that i will see them soon also. then the indigo buntings will be here too. isnt spring soo nice.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I love spring as everything turns green it just makes me feel so renewned and energized love the early mornings watching the sun come up and hot lazy afternoons and watching the sunsets its a great life but winter is ok till xmas and then I could really skip the cold snow thing its for the polar bears and pinguins lol

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Hey Lynn, shouldn't be too much longer now because there was a sighting yesterday in Morrison!

I agree Mona. This is my favorite time of year, watching everything come to life! Every day is like a little treasure hunt to see what is up or what has bloomed!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

yup some of the trees are leafing out and with the heat tomorrow suppose to hit in the 80s its going to be great have my day all planned out hahahah

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Yesterday, I was potting up geranium, petunias baskets ect and one keep checking on the flowers I was working with! I just love their little daredevil attitudes! I bumped my sugar content to 1/3 yesterday instead of 1/4 when I refilled the feeder.

I'm washing out my red shirt to wear again today (wore it all day yesterday in the garden) and bought a red Tractor Supply Ball Cap to wear today, too. Must run out and get some red geraniums, even thought they will clash mightily with my pink/mauve/cream spring themed garden at its peak right now!

I am watching this thread for news of everyone's arrivals. So exciting!

South Hamilton, MA

Hummingbirds will work hosta here & I have seen them on white heuchera. They must cruise the garden, investigating things. Not showing up at the moment, but not much to find.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Yes, they check out about anything her. Even the teeny tiny bells on coral bells. They go to the daylilies, and hosta too.

Oquawka, IL(Zone 5a)

I saw a male Ruby Throated Hummingbird this morning! I had my camera in hand, but was so excited that it's just a little blur! But...I saw one :-)

Rose

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Congrats Rose...I was up before daylight this morning just so I could sit on the front porch and watch them come in. They put on quite a show and I love to hear the humm and that little squeeky sound they make!

Marlton, NJ

Congratulations Rose!

Savannah, MO(Zone 5b)

You go Pelle!!! That's awesome,,,,,,,,

Rose were you shaking the camera with excitement(!)....... or was the little guy on the move? Cuckoo

Beachwood, NJ(Zone 6b)

Hooray Pelletory!!!

Savannah, MO(Zone 5b)

This just happened....... I was on Dave's checking threads and a hawk slammed into our sliding glass door dive bombing after a blue jay!! I said "What was that?" and jumped up and saw the hawk after the blue jay. Moments later he landed in a taller tree looking again for the blue jay. I just filled my feeders yesterday and I have all kinds of birds and now a bird of prey too. I fired off a couple of pictures of the hawk(using the sport mode)high in a tree with the wind whipping him around on the small branch.
No hummers yet but I'm watching more often.

Cuckoo

Oquawka, IL(Zone 5a)

Cuckoo,

Probably a combination of the two! I also have a pretty Baltimore Oriole eating on my orange halves! Looks like all of our summer time visitors are here :-)

Dixon, IL(Zone 5a)

grosbeaks showed up here last night and then right at dark I saw a bunting. Got home from daughters soccer and looked out and there was a dozen buntings in my front yard. Of course the squirrels and jays had all the front feeders empty. LOLOL. so i went out and filled everything and of course scared them away. i have never had that many at once. males and females and the cute little chipping sparrows. i just changed the oriole feeder and hb feeders so everything is fresh and ready and waiting for those guys to show up. Come on little birdie friends.

Dixon, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh congrats Pelle. It has got to be our turn soon Mrs. Ed. LOL

Marlton, NJ

Thanks everyone!

Windsor, Canada

We saw our first Ruby Throated Hummingbird today in Southwestern Ontario . Also had an Orchard Oriole. Wyn

Marlton, NJ

That's great ican!!!

Ferndale, AR(Zone 7b)

30 hummers?!!!!! Wow, how can you count that many? I was excited to see approx 7 or 8 swarming around our feeders at dusk last night and had trouble counting them. 30 must look like a swarm of bees!

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

It is like a swarm of bees. I saw at least that many at a wildlife station in the Land Between the Lakes. They had out multiple feeders. I wish I could get more to stay at my house. I do well to keep 4 all summer.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

YAY Pelle!!!!

We are just waiting for the Indigo Buntings and then all our usual summer gang will be here. Saw Catbirds yesterday.

Freeport, IL

Hello there - I found this site / forum as I was surfing the net to see when I can expect the hummers in my area.
Sounds like they will be here shortly ... this looks like a great site - I'm excited to look around and join in!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Welcome ChefsMom...this is a wonderful place to be and hope to see you often. We have others from your area so you should feel right at home.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi, ChefsMom, glad to have you joining us in our obsession! Alway enablers here!

There is a lot of good information stored on DG about birds and gardens, etc.. It's easy to find if you use the 'search' in the upper right hand corner.

Let us know when you get your first HBs! t.

p.s. Also wanted to report I got my first HB yard sighting this morning on a Dropmore Scarlet Honeysuckle that I purchased not a half hour before from Lowes. He apparently saw me unload it from the car and came over to investigate. At least then he paid me the courtesy of checking out one of my seven feeders!

Glen Burnie, MD

I can't BEEEEE-LIEVE the hummers are all the way up in Canada & I haven't
had ONE here yet!!! That rots. Oh, speaking of rots - would it do any good to
set out rotting fruit to attract bugs for them? Do ya think that would work?
