What have you ordered for spring 2009 - Part 6

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I wouldn't think so Victor

:)

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I got a mesage from a vendor (no mail order) that they were so pleased with my review that my next plant is "on the house" I thought that was so nice and good business. I also thought it might be a great spot for a Jersey Girl Gallop. And a great restaurant 5 minutes away.

Victor, so sorry to hear about your loss. My Mom had a beautiful weeping cherry and one spring it just gave up for no apparent reason. It was only about 15 years old. She was heartbroken, therefore I was too.

Allison, I have to do some Garden Watchdog ratings also. They will be great ratings. Someone on this forum (wha maybe?) attested to Lazy ss..yes they are above average!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

that's nice Weeze!!!.... you know I like to gallop

:)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm off to GW too.Sorry about your tree.
We had similar situation here only the shade plants werent very established. I created a whole new garden to acomodate the hostas I had to move.
Its hard to "let go" of a cherished area.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I got an order from easytogrowbulbs yesterday and I am not thrilled. I got the email that they were shipped last friday. I don't think it is a good idea to send a live plant shipment from across the country on a friday. Some of the order was bulbs, and those should be fine but the mandevilla and plumeria I ordered look half dead and their potting media was like dust it was so dry. PLus the mandevilla had black aphids all over it. I watered them and sprayed the mandevilla with an organic insect killer. I will hope for the best. I haven't decided wether to call about it. I usually just don't order from somewhere again if I am not happy. I agree Lazy S Farm is above average I was very pleased with the order I received from them last year. Every plant was very healthy and looked like I just bought them at the nursery. They all did very well. I will definitely order from there again.
Here is the sad mandevilla I got from easy to grow bulbs yesterday.

You need to post on Garden Watchdog also.
GW will give you a broader coverage.
I hope they give a guarantee. Those plants look "iffy"

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I also have ordered from Big Dipper in the past and I had mixed results with the plants I got. Half did well the other half died. So I haven't ordered from them again. There are so many places to choose from that I won't bother with a place that only sends me a half decent order.
I just put an order in for a couple roses from a place called Heirloom Roses, they have mixed reviews, but they had two roses I really wanted that I couldn't find anywhere else. A climber called Portlandia and a Sheila's Perfume. They sell own root roses and where I am boderline here with hardiness of some roses I thought that would be better than grafted. So hopefully they send decent plants.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks ge I didn'tpreview that last post I sent. I was thinking of what to say on GW, I was going to give them a chance to see if they make it - then decide how to review.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I am luke warm on Big Dipper as youve probably noticed.
Other DGers say the roots are still good and the plants probably wont bloom this year anyway so go ahead and plant them.
I also just remembered Fox gloves are supposed to be bianial so Thats it, some do come back.I went to th BD website and they are bot taking anymore orders this season, something must have happened.
I also noticed way back in Feb. Garden Crossings had sold out on many plants, now its hard to find anything there that isnt wait listed.
We ahve pretty good local nurseries but sometimes on-line has varieties not sold here.
Good idea to wait to see how things go befor going to GWD. I would notify the nursery about your dismal plants as many nurseries will replace if the complaint comes within a month of recieving the plant.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

sorry to hear that Meredith.... the best way I found to post pics for GW is to put them in my diary and make sure you go under the my info tab then the "read Meridith's Diary" to copy and paste the link

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Ge that 'is' odd that they aren't taking orders.
Allison, I will be sure to do that, thanks for the tip.
I was up with the birds this morning, probably only because I came down with a cold yesterday and I woke up very uncomfortable. So instead of laying there suffering I got up and I went out and finally got around to taking some pictures of what's blooming so far. I have to go find the garden photo thread, there must be new one because I haven't had it show up on my new posts watch. That thread is so hard to keep up with! lol
I just remembered that I also received a Daylily order, it was at least two weeks ago now. I was happy with i t- but daylilies seem to be an easy shipper. But the plants are mostly big or at least good size and I got an extra of the one I really wanted so I was happy. They were from Farmhouse http://www.gardeneureka.com/FARMH/. I have potted them up and have been trying to get them reacquainted with sunlight. I am so excited about the nice weather we are supposed to be having this week. I hope I don't get overzealous and plant stuff too soon.

I try to hold down the impulse when we have temps in the 80's like the next few days.
I put annuals in early May and they suffered the night temps so much they were actually behind by the tome memorial day came(traditionally putting in garden time around here)It just wasnt worth it, to cover and uncover every night for weeks.

Thomaston, CT

Wow---some bad news about the JM, Victor---& the viburnums---you need to rent a dog for awhile! I would be really PO if I received plants with insects, Meredith----I did order a rose from Heirloom Roses----no problems, but it is smaller than was stated in catalog.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Victor, I am really sad about your JMaple and the eaten Vib. I have just gone outside on our rooftop balcony with a pool and screamed the appropriate explicative for all in the warehouse district of New Orleans to hear. Not many down here on a Sat Morning as we are on the street with all the art galleries. But there is a farmers market a few blocks up and anyone there would approve my *&%^^^))__%%%%%%*******deer!

We waited 6 months before taking down a much loved swamp maple that suddenly died a couple years back. I moved lots of hosta under it as soon as I suspected it was a goner. But that was an easy fix. I can't imagine what you can do except put up nylon sails in the branches to shade the little Jmaples for this summer. Truly a bummer.

Off to an other day at Jazz Fest. Spent most of the day at the Fais do do venue or the Blues or Jazz tent. Spent a little time in the Gospel tent and finished up with Joe Cocker, who sounds the same as ever and looks healthy, honest. He did a great show. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, all. Patti - I appreciate the empathy. I'm sure they heard me in NO!

South Hamilton, MA

I was going to suggest the use of a shade cloth until the newer plants can take the sun, like. that used for the older shade grown tobacco. My sympathy, but the main thing is to rescue the new.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Sorry for your loss Victor. I heard you in Maine. ^_^

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Lucy and Celeste. I might have to use the shade cloth, Lucy - thanks.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Okay I held down the impulse today, by weeding and majorly pulling weeds out of a new bed I put in last year. Hopefully I can make it all week though. I am going to plant half my hollyhocks though. The seedlings I started last year are growing now and have made it through 30's F so they should be fine. I bought a cover at HD a week or so ago that is supposed to protect down to about 28 F. I will probably plant a few other hardys too. My hollyhocks were started either late Jan or early Feb. so they are getting pot bound in their deep two inch pots
Thanks robinndog that is good to know about Heirloom Roses. : ) After reading some other comments about them, I am sort a expecting small but still hoping for big lol. :) Did you get the rose recently? I am wondering if they take more than a year to flower. Hopefully by the second...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Did not plan to buy any more clems this year, but I just did. Six more from Debbie.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

received my jm order from greers today - very happy with them all - a couple were stressed from the x-country trip - pics to follow

Thomaston, CT

Are they named clems, Victor? Meredith---ordered the rose about 5 years ago---if I remember correctly, it bloomed the 1st year----the rose was supposed to get to 2-3 ft---for me, it is only a foot tall----pretty, creamy blooms on it though. Will love to see the JMs, Bill.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sure are. Margaret Hunt, Barbara Harrington, Belle of Woking, Comtesse de Bouchaud, Ivan Olssen and Twilight.

Thomaston, CT

The only one I know is Belle of Woking---can't wait to see photos of the rest!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

So have any of the online and mail-order nurseries lowered their shipping prices since gasoline went down so much since last summer???

(Zone 4a)

I can't wait to see your clematis in bloom victor!!!

I didn't order anything since I am not really an online order type of person when it comes to plants. Although I did get a beautiful tuteur and I will be purchasing 1 or 2 clematis for that once the nurseries are in full stock here. I have a few ideas of what I would like to plant on it but I will have to see if they have them here this year.

This year will be cheap for me....I don't really have anymore room for perennials so the only thing I will be purchasing might be some annuals.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ha ha - I've been saying that for about six years now!

(Zone 4a)

I know where you are coming from Victor...there always seems to be a spot for that much wanted plant but boy oh boy I am telling ya - I need more gardening room here! I suppose that is why I love clematis so much....I can also garden vertically!!! LOL.....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - true. Very small footprint. I grow virtually all of mine through shrubs.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Ah ha I was wondering where on earth you would have room for all those arbors and trellises! lol That answered my question.
Thanks Robindog, at least I can hope for a bloom the first year. I like to see the flowers so I know if the plants are what I ordered. Or at least whether they look anything like the pictures. Some of them are so misleading.
I ordered a red buckeye from forest farm in spring 06 and planted it in May. The thing is taller than me and it hasn't bloomed yet. Now I know a lot of people say it may not be mature enough, but if you google red buckeyes they are known to bloom on only 2 year old seedlings. So far this spring it has just finished leafing out and there is no sign of flowers again! I am going to be super bummed if it doesn't flower. I really wanted one of these for the hummers. It is in part shade which is what was recommended and they are supposedto be able tobloom even in full shade. I am beginning to think they sent me a different species that has the same kind of leaves. :(

Thomaston, CT

I'm afraid that has happened to me also---I know it has in daylilies.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Garden Crossings order will arrive Wed.I'll be able to finish the new east garden where I hate to dig.
Coriopsis Autumn Blush, hope it does better for me than the one i bought last year that failed to appear.
Lots of annuals that will have to stay in the house for a couple of weeks.I know it seems like summer but I dont trust the weather.
Lavanders
Poppies Royal Wedding
cant wait to see them.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yeah take pictures!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

It will be awhile. June maybe.
RC ! iI found the Blue Angles. They has a few inches of mulch on them. They arent hard to spot when they emerge. Those eyes are the size of bear kanines.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

That stinks about daylilies, although I wouldn't be as upset as I am about this tree if that happens with the ones I ordered this year.
Ge I have been wanting to plant stuff too, I read an article about how farmer's use the bloom of the Lilacs as a sure sign it is safe to plant frost tender crops.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Poppies Royal Wedding.is that the white one with the dark , almost black inside? I had some seeds I grew a few years back and they were lovely.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thats the one. I bought plants no time to wait for flowers from seed starting. Muggy here flies are awful.
