I guess I miscounted sorry, KC. The weather has been really windy. We got dust blowing already. I think the hummers were glad of a sheltered place to get out of the wind. They come in and stay for a while then they'd go out again. I hope it calms down soon.

Wow, you got some really great pix today!!
I agree really nice!! Ours were under shelter somewhere today. Windy all day, plus we kept getting these squalls going through where it rained buckets, once it hailed so bad it was standing on the ground. Yukk!
OMG, OMG you guys! Unbvelievable!!!
I spent a couple of hours cleaning up with the broom, blower and my fingers, of course. When done I started watering my patio potted plants and got to the big iron pot with my rose tree in it, ajuga on the soil, finch socks'n stuff.
I'm quietly sprinkling the surface and heard a noise, kind of a deep-throated hum. You know where I'm going with this, don't you?
There was a dark little hummer with a green sweater flitting about the water as it left the nozzle and approached the soil. OMG! There's that brazen little guy wanting water out of my hose. After a couple of minutes, unsatisfied, he stopped and sat on the pot edge and I tried to gently approach him with the water and he flitted over to another landing spot and sat there. Waiting, waiting, waiting. So I quietly set the water down, letting it run, and went inside to get a couple of little bowls so as to provide a safer encounter for him. He flew about a bit as I approached, but left before I got them on the ground.
I just couldn't stand there forever watering that rose in a pot, afterall. Darn! Water was running out the drain holes I have drilled 12 inches up the side. I mean . . . . So I just left the little bowls in the soil and will go about my day [bummer].
I'm going to drag the feeders inside and clean and refill them now. I've seen one daily, late afternoon, at the feeders and knew I had one around.
But . . . what a brazen boy/girl! YIPPEEEEE!
Linda
Well, if I saw a spot that pretty and a water bearer to boot, I'd be brazen, too! Sounds like you have one that will give you opportunities for watching. Keep your eye on your roses when they bloom, I once saw a hummer bathing in an open rose in the early morning. I was bent over dead-heading and didn't dare move! :-)
A friend and I once just about stopped breathing for about 8 minutes while a hummer stuck its beak into every single bloom on a head of verbena bonarensis. I didn't think it was even possible to FIT a hummer tongue into one of these teeny flowers....LOL!

What a neat experience, Linda---and yes, the word is probably out about all the wonderful things you're doing with your garden!
Twincol,
I'm so excited that you had a close encounter of the Hummer kind! LOL! I've often seen mine diving through the misters we have along the back patio. They seem to enjoy it, and it is fun to watch them cavorting in the spray. We installed the misters because the back patio faces west, and it helps cool down us, the critters, and the house. I usually have a bunch of plants benefitting from them misters too!
Sally, the hummers like the gh because it is sheltered and warmer, not mention all the food sources. They aren't going to pass up the free food and board! LOL!
Ima, thanks, it was a wondrous experience.
I have a bunch more photos to post, but our friends with dial up won't be able to keep up, so I started another thread. I have so enjoyed this thread and sharing our OMG experiences. It's been fun and I've learned a lot.
I hope you join us at:
