Crocus.
Garden photos of '09.....#9
On the other thread, Victor-Female american goldfinch. A winter male would have more yellow in it.
Makes sense since I did have the yellow ones today as well.

I still haven't got over the fact that they're brown in the winter period. I wonder why they do that?
Protects them from predators. When food is scarce in the winter you want to be less noticable to those that would eat you.
So why don't the males change too?
They are sacrificing themselves for the sake of the women. Very romantic finches.
Wow, I'm off for a few hours and i'm way behind. Nice work.
Thanks Victor. I don't know how you can even come up with a list of the ones that are "the tops" with that many! Ramona, i've seen in person and It's nice. Betty Corning i've only seen in pictures, but it sure looks good. Great bird pictures!
Great picture Dyane! I sure wish I still had my China Town Tulip:-( Gophers ate it. But, someday I'll get a handle on those stinkin critters and plant a few more!
Robin, I agree completely. I know what kind of grass that is, I just can't think of it at the moment. Tidy and controlled is a great way of looking at it. Maybe for now, you can divide it if you want another.
Pixie, I would have zone envy too if I were where you are. too much snow!
Patti, that's an unusual and very pretty Hippeastrum!
For me purple clems are like yellow/orange DL's - there are just way too many that are too close. So I try to go for non-purple ones.
I like the color of the Nagano Hipp. too
Isn't that a interesting salmon color for one of them?
Victor, certainly you're seen Josephine, right? I would almost bet that you have it. that's one of my favorite non-purples.... at the moment. Then also C. montana 'Wilsonii', just white, but it smells like chocolate. Can't beat that!!

I have Josephine, though that's one I have to hunt down to make sure it's okay. I'll have to check out Wilsonii - love chocolate! Montanas get big though.
Wait wait Pattie...are those iris pictures from this year??
Schreiner's Iris catalog came today...very very dangerous stuff. i've already fallen in love with several.
Are they the iris with the funny hats?
*dinggle* *dinggle* *dinggle* LOVE their parades!
Wow! I've been away too long! can't keep up! Don't know how you all manage to get so much in. I've been too busy, and last couple days been sick with a bad cold. Getting better now. Hope to be out in the gardens this weekend to clean stuff up. I did get some WSing done today, and I have some WS seedlings coming up, too. So exciting!!!!
Victor, you did great on your crocus shots in the previous thread and the one before that. Something eats mine every year, so I don't get to enjoy them. I don't know if it's deer or rabbits. Just the flowers get eaten off. Maybe squirrels or chippies.
Abbyday, I love that one shot you posted of the the crocuses in the lawn, taken at worm's-eye-view. Pretty cool! What a shame about those cherry trees. I hate to see good trees cut down.
Nice lungworts, Shelly. I love them them. That picture of the river by your house if fantastic! What beautiful scenery you have around there!
Sherri, on the last thread you posted a pic of damage to one of your JM's. It had a split and the bark was gone. It looks like the bark was eaten by a rabbit or possibly a vole. I have had this happen to trees before. If the bark is gone all the way around, then, unfortunately, I believe it will die. It may come back from below where the bark was chewed, but if it's a grafted variety, then you will be getting whatever the root-stock is. I had this happen to a huge wild apple tree out by the road this year. I think it's done-for. It will be sad to see it go, as it's a magnificent tree. I saw a little damage done to my Dawn Redwood that I planted last year, but it is not much, so I think that will be fine. I may put duct tape around it this fall to keep it from happening again, and possibly worse.
Karen
hope you feel better!
Thanks Karen! That river is a lot smaller, but also much faster, by the time you travel 30 mi. upstream! I sure hope that you feel better soon. That's no fun at all.
I thought this was cute. I let one of my cats come outside for a little bit today. She's strictly in indoor cat, and was raised that way by her prior owner. But every now and then I let her out onto the porch or sidewalk, but only if i'm going to be within eyesight of her because she's comepletely clueless about "outdoor life." Anyhow, I thought that this "situation" is the perfect example of why her visitation to the great outdoors is supervised.
I've watched her do this 3 or 4 times now. The funny part is that she doesn't even have to think about how to do that, or hesitate to. She walks right up to the railing and, without even pausing, turns her head sideways, takes another step forward and through the railing, then stops and turns her head straight so that she can stand there and look around. Same darn thing in reverse to get back out. She doesn't even try to back out without turning her head.
my very first daffodil is finally open!
definitely!!!
I love daffs!
So pretty!!
No daffs here yet, just little blue crocus.
nice RC... mine are just starting to poke out of the ground
Wow - that took me a bit to catch up! Great pics everyone. I'm so excited that spring is here.
Victor - your wren, finch and chickadee pics are great [as usual]. I have them all year long. American Goldfinches, I believe, are the only species of bird to have two moltings. Once in spring from brown to yellow and then again in the fall back to brown. Cornell is a good site for info - http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/American_Goldfinch.html
I am waiting for it to warm up a bit more - it's only 36° right now [8:30am]. It is supposed to go up to the 50's today. But, I did go out and shoot a few pictures.
My crocus are closed right now, but they should open nicely later.
nice daff shelley - congrats - it will be a while before they start here
yeah for Anita!
hope mine pop up soon... crocus envy
Hummmmmm we are in the same zone but I would have imagined you to be further along than we are.
These are old bulbs.
not even close yet... mine are 2 or 3 years old
drumlin, The reticulated iris bloom in March. We have a few more out today according to DH. The early blooming Iris histrioides 'Kathryn Hodgkin' as well as Iris danfordiae. I am still in bed sick. I so hate losing a perfectly great day outside to work in the garden and to visit the new kids popping up. I may have to make an effort to try to get downstairs and out for a few minutes later today.
I do love the peachy, soft orange or salmon hippeastrum. 'Supreme Garden', 'Gold Medal',' Exotica', and 'Charmeur' are others with great those colors that I grow. Here is a collage of some of this winters blooms. Many more to come soon. Patti
yummy
