Difficult to see new plants to order when it was difficult to see the ground. Becoming clear the last couple of days. Haven't even ordered irises as yet--do need to be able to count vacant spaces.
What have you ordered for spring 2009 - Part 5
My back door is swollen shut - I need to get the roof fixed so it stops leaking so I can go out the back and see what's out there!
sooner plant farm is having a sale on diffrent redbud - sorry the weeping one is sold out
Jo Anne, your new gardens are gonna look great this year, I'm predicting!
I've had to work pretty steady since returning from my vacation in Texas. Finally I have some time to work in the gardens this weekend. Can't wait! Mostly I will be working on raking out the leaves and dead foliage from the beds. Maybe we could even do some burning.
BTW, Texas has its own redbud native. Nice looking tree. Leaves aren't as big as the Eastern redbud.

Sounds like you have a yen for Texas Karen
i have a swamp maple here - the leaves are huge in comparison of other maples - and as nutfdl said on the blooms thread - mine also has yellow leaves in the fall. it shoots of babies like no body's business.
I always thought swamp maple was another name for red maple.
not an expert on tree types - this one has green bark and a wide canopy - when i was having the backyard cleared the loggers told me it was a swamp maple - more research is needed
ok research complete - gotta love google - willie is correct - no swamp maple here - now what the heck is it?
My Silver Maple turns Yellow, I think ..... Would love some red or orange foliage in the fall .... all I seem to have around turns directly brown.
Jo Anne, yes I do have a yen for Texas. In my mind we have already purchased that house there that we're interested in. In fact last night I called the Realtor and told him to get me figures from the owner of average electric bills for summer and winter, as well as the annual property tax.
Yup, Willie, swamp maple is another name for red maple, though it's not restricted to swampy areas. It will grow in very dry areas, too. In fact it grows in Texas as well. I'm thinking of sending one to my sister to plant on her property.
Bill, yours sounds like it could be Norway maple. They have much bigger leaves than the swamp maple and turn yellow in the fall. It has different looking bark, too. But if the leaves are white underneath, then it's silver maple. They also get yellow leaves in the fall.
Karen
Willie, that sounds like my ash tree. Turns brown rather early, and the compound leaves make a real mess with all the big stems that fall off. But it's a nice looking tree.
Karen
I think Karen might have the winner! I seem to remember looking at Norway Maples a while back during a different thread's conversation on maple tree fall colors.
i saw norway maple on the site i checked out - did not look right although they did not have great pics - this is not real tall maybe 25" and has a bush like canopy - i think this is the type that woodsman would cut a branch and make a flute out of.
Nope, not an ash tree ..... definitely a Silver Maple (or white maple, which ever you prefer)
Has maple leaves, for sure... not like the ash leaves at all.
I think this past fall didn't allow for a colorful display, or it was so short I didn't notice it change.
BTW ....
Happy Friday the 13th, everyone!!!!
Only 25"? Do you mean 25'? Hmmmm........ Don't know what it could be. Norway maple gets very tall. Here's a link to the description in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_platanoides They don't have the height in feet, though, just meters. They say 20-30 meters. I'm thinking that's up to 60'. It's very invasive via seedlings. Crowds out the natives.
Karen
Yay! Friday the 13th, lucky day! Next one will be in November.
Oh, btw, the red (actually purple leaves) Norway maple does not make red babies. They turn out green. I'm guessing those have to be cloned. Are they grafted?
Karen
Maybe they are just green when young and grow into their color?
No, I've read the seedlings grow into green trees.
Karen
Silver maples are supposed to turn yellow in the fall. They are called silver because the leaves are white on the back, thus making them look silver.
Well, gotta go to work now. See ya!
Karen
i realized i missed one coop - New Double Strain Helleborus and Extra Large 4” Hellebores
Norway maples were everyone's favorite city street tree in the 40s and 50s. They crack, have a shallow root system (not enough to support the branches), have an extremely dense canopy that NOTHING can grow under, thus crowding out the local understory growth, and are bullies, besides. They run with scissors! They have a 150% germination rate. I have one in front of my house on town land, which is dying. The town won't take it away until it is 75% dead. Right now it's about 60% dead. It greatly adds to the beauty of our house (NOT).
Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
double that good luck - be there early with dirty finger nails from playing with dirt!!
Good luck. You know a lot about plants, which not everyone who works in the bigger stores does. You would be an asset!
Yes a big asset Sherrie! Good luck I hope you get it.
just ordered two more coreopsis from GC.
Siena and moonglow
Best wishes, Sherrie, on your interview. If you need references, you have a whole forum full. :)
Good luck Sherrie!
