Coffee Break # 5 - One week to daylight savings!
Wow - food pickup at Willie's!
Allison and Bill - so sorry to hear about your work situations. It is so hard to hear that so many good people are having some tough things happen through no fault of their own.
Sherrie - sorry to hear about your DH's continued situation as well.
Dahlia - glad you survived, but know how stressful that must be for you to see the impersonal treatment so callously delivered to so many friends and co-workers. This economic situation is just awful, and I feel for you all!!
Candyce - how scary that chimney fire must have been!! So glad you are all ok, and it's just great to see you posting again.
I'd feed the world, of course, if I possibly could! If there is one thing at which those who garden excel, it has to be endurance follow closely by patience. Good training for times like these, for sure!
I wish my veggie gardens were the size of a football field, Bill!!
I don't have that much room, really. I have (2) raised herb gardens that are 10 x 10 and another that is triangular (1/2 a 6 x 6 square). Also plant herbs through out the flower beds, front and back. The main vegetable garden is raised, and only 10 x 30. There is a bed that is 10 x 30 along the south side of the greenhouse.
I am also going to invade the (2) neighbor's yard, though they don't know it yet!! ^_^
I am thinking I can make another area for veggies behind my property if I needed to (No Man's Land between houses and businesses on other side) but there would be MANY rabbits to contend with.
Along the property line is a bed 6 foot wide the length of the backyard that I can use for veggies, too, but only for bright/light shade liking things.
Any extra that sprout will go for sale at the curb during the annual street sale (late may) with $$$ going to the local food pantry. Have to do something to help where I can.
Only 10 X 30?!
Uh - huh .... well, there are two of them .....
okay, Willie, so get ready for the rest of the seeds when I plant the leftover list. :)
Cyndie
My brother told me that our aunt's veg. garden helped the family as well as neighbors during the depression. Then there were victory gardens during WWII. The town made a vacant lot available, cut up into about 5 areas. We had corn & peas (about the only veg. my father would consider eating) as well as green beans. The springer spainel which visited next door liked to dig up my carrot garden. My father referred to that as the 'north forty'= the north forty". We have stopped growing corn here since the racoons harvested it about 10 yrs ago.
That's wonderful.
With baited breath, Cyndie!!!
I don't need much of an excuse to get rid of more lawn to make way for things!
Oops, I also remember we had beets. as a result I am the only member of my current family who likes the, don't like beet greens however. Youngest daughter grows cukes & grape tomatoes an here small area in MN. Wanted a raised cuke frame (garden supply). So she got it for christmas hidden in plain sight by her kids.
Great garden story, Iris.
My father and I competed with who had the first ripe tomato. Lots of family memories.
Now is the time for new Victory Gardens.
Anyone here can get started with one. Just let us know and we will set you up with seeds.
willie it sounds like you have a lot of spread out veggy beds! not sure how many seeds you planted - my guess it the food pantry will be happy with your contribution!
I seem to be mainly collecting typos. Can't grow things in snow. I hope to grow some annuals, cutting garden style as the flower budget at church has been cut back. We have several varieties of goldenrod which we did not plant, from Aug. on.
This is my year to cut out grass and build the raised veggie bed that I had been planning all along. I tried veggies every other way these past few years. I'm planting no veggies this year just so I can focus on getting a good bed ready.
Of course, there will always be flowers. I'm starting those seeds this weekend!
WNYwillieB Did both of those come from the same bag??
Yes !

Sherrie: I wonder if any knows what quality control is any more!!??!!
I have plenty of room to start seedlings, and cold frames to harden them off in. Not everything had a ton of seeds (Tomato - Pink Turkish, for instance, 6 seeds). If I were to guess, I would say maybe 2,000 veggie and herb seeds started. Now, onto the perennials and annuals!
I did the food pantry sale last year, and just asked for donations. I was impressed that people were paying anywhere from $2.00 - $5.00 per seedling start! I ran out fast, so I am upping the operation this year.
WNY has one of the highest donation rates in the nation, which is pretty good considering most make just enough to get by. These are really good people to have as neighbors.
My thoughts are with all who are in the throes of employment woes. We had layoffs in my office as well.
I'm looking forward to the "Spring Ahead" this weekend. I love driving home in daylight!!!
Me too! Love Daylight Savings.
I was going to say I thought they were two different kinds, but I am far from a spud expert!
I like the later sunset, but not the later sunrise. It will be dark out again when I get up on Sunday morning.
I feel so badly for all of us that have been down-sized, laid-off, or down-right let go. This is a very tough time. I'm very glad that I am taking care of the kiddos, but if their mother's employment goes out the window then so does mine. So I hold my breath every day.
It's good to be back among friends again.
It's nice to have you back. ^_^
Yes it is.
Thanks, friends.
Good to "see" you again Candyce
i am whooped... started these tonight

That's a lot of work Allison!
Victor, great article, but too short. I wish they did that study in our area and not in Texas. How do I find out all the results?
Harper
Nice work one wish
Any one see Michael Jackson?
promoting 10 concerts in London this summer.
Any one believe it was really him?
I didnt
Lips too full
Chin not right
the falsetto just wasnt convincing
I believe it was a trial balloon to see how many fans are still there.
NOTE I have never been a fan,and with the scandel It surely sealed it.
Was he ever real?
Does anyone know the urban myth site where we can find out for sure.?
This AM CNN hinted it was a scam guess that came from bloggers.
The Jackson Five were awesome, no doubt about it. Too much pressure for such a young boy to bare.
Even his one brother (American Idol Judge, Randy) shows the signs, even though it appears he has kept it together pretty well.
I can't imagine what those kids went through.
They never socialized thats for sure.
Father saw a cash cow and made sure he got as much out of it as possible.
It takes a lot of moolaah to keep up the alomony and maintain all those houses and cars.
