Whoa - you beat me, David!! I better go outside and check.^_^ Congrats!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i'd have to use a snow blower to check - congrats david

I gotta bud coming to show ya. Not today and not tomorrow, but bud is coming.

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

wha...didn't need a snow blower but the crocus was under snow 5 days ago. That last storm ended with rain.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

allison they look great!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

the good part is... if we don't have enough root from this first batch... there is still time to root more!!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Wow! Nice work on that map, Willie. Do you have one of the US? I, too, love looking at maps.

I use Paint Shop Pro 8 for my photo editing, though would have preferred to get Adobe. Just couldn't afford it.

Nice hawk pics! We have a pair that nest here, too.

Willie, don't feel so bad. I owed the IRS mucho denero for not filing my taxes back in 2001 and also for money owed for over $5,000 in 1099 income for 2005. I finally got them paid off in Nov. 2007. I still have not filed for 2005 with the state. I'm afraid to see what I owe them. The state is worse to deal with than the feds.

for a the seed starters out there - i have a problem every year with moss or green sludge with my seed starting soil - i do not believe i drench the soil - i leave the lids on untill the seeds have sprouted - i don't use any fans - i noticed some tonight starting (they still have covers on) - i ususally scrape if off and it's no big deal - any suggestions?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

even with the fan I get it sometimes... I use peroxide & chamomile tea... most of the time I just leave it.. it doesn't seem to harm anything

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

here are some snaps with green stuff on the soil from last year... obviously they were fine

Gorgeous plants, Allison! And I loved the hawk photos! We had a Coopers last week, chasing a cardinal---I've only seen 1 male lately---guess the other is gone. We continue to have many pine siskins--the hawk could have had one of those! Nice crocus, David---none are up yet in my yard.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

thank you... I got all excited when I picked the covers up and gave a tug... such a relief when it doesn't yank out of the soil... I just hope it's not too cool in my basement for the other flats... the NG impatiens don't look so hot

Rockport, ME(Zone 5b)

Onewish, so I have to ask....isn't it kinda early to grow annuals like petunias? Do you have a greenhouse? I wasn't going to start anything until maybe April. BeeUUUtiful plants, though!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Wow Allison! Lookin' Green Over There!!

If it isn't too cool in my greenhouse for NG Imps, then your basement is probably fine. My NG Imps are doing OK, even on the cold cement floor. Fingers crossed!

Thanks, Karen. I have yet to do a US map. Yet, that is!

I gave up on planting crocuses .... I was just feeding the squirrels :( So, I will enjoy the photos y'all provide! :)

I thought green sludge was normal .......

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

those were cuttings from NC farms.... and most of my petunia seeds are started or going to be this week... they take a while to grow to flowering size... I have lights in two rooms in my house... someday hope to have a greenhouse

hope you are right Willie... some look like they are discoloring

:(

Something eats my crocuses every year, too. I've just assumed it's deer, but could be rabbits or squirrels.

Looks great, Allison!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

When I made cuttings of my NG Imps to root .... I dipped them in powder and then set them to root in water.

They looked a little worse for wear for a bit and a few didn't make it.

When I transplanted them into soil, they started to look worse for wear again, but sprung back.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Nothing eats my crocuses and I have lots of squirrels and chipmunks, although the chippies are not awake yet. So you might want to look to the deer. I did find something today that was sad. I went into the back yard and saw the birdfeeder knocked down. Right next to the feeder was a dove belly up and quite still. When I picked him (or her) up he was still warm. I can only figure that the squirrels knocked the feeder down on the dove which killed it. He was so still and beautiful, it made me think of the movie American Beauty. I never knew what that kid was talking about until today. Now I know, I saw the beauty of death.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

You are right. There is a sublime beauty to repose.

We haven't had deer in the neighborhood in decades. So my "guess" was squirrels, as I wasn't aware that rabbits would dig.

Do rabbits dig?

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

They dig burrows for their homes but I don't know it they dig for food. Pixie would probably know.

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Saw two pairs of hawks today. The birds were skittish at the feeders today. Hawks have been known to grab a snack in my yard.

Nice shot, Dyane.

Thanks, Victor. It's tricky to catch a close up.

Nice pics Dyane!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

thank you Victor.... nice hawk shots Dyane!

Thomaston, CT

Looks like a Coopers---they love to raid feeders! You got great shots!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes the chest markings look like a Cooper. Here's one on my tree last fall.

Dyane and Victor...nice hawk photos...I have yet to catch one but they certainly are around. Have you noticed more recently? The customer count at my birdfeeder is way, way down. Either the economy is affecting chickadees and catbirds or something else is bothering them.

My bird count was up and went down. I was getting seed at ocean state job lots. 40 lbs for 25.00 (mixed seed) Then went to wally world and 40lbs for 16.88 (black sunflower) and the bird count went POOF.....

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

You can tell a cooper from a sharp shinned by their tail and size otherwise they look exactly alike. Cooper has a rounded tail and the size of a crow. Sharp shinned square tail and size of a jay.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

The birds in my yard ONLY like black sunflower seeds

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

I think I have Sharp Shinned Hawks. It took me a while to figure it out because the juvenile Sharpies look nearly identical to the Cooper's.

I just added a Nyjer Thistle feeder and I had no customers for almost two weeks, now all of a sudden I have little finches showing up. Guess they gave out my address at the Finch convention.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The squirrels are not so fussy.
