She's About To.........#43

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Evening gals and dolls... I have another Brug seed up! that makes 5 now,
( out of 20 isn't bad so far) Will be really nice tommorrow, but instead of working outside where I will want to clear the leaves off my flower beds, I will ignore the urge and get the flower seed packets put together.. Star and Happ, would be glad to add you to my list...Bonnie if I didn't give you any laurentia let me know you have to have that disperesed in your flower pots or containers for a season long look of floating stars..
I gave Duke 10 mg loratadine also, and did you know they make a childrens chewable? I also give my old Dukers a childrens chewable tylenol when he is limping from his Arthritus.. He then acts like a puppy again! Wish I had a bathtub to sink and use ,,, you know I would go nutz with it..
KIM! do u want some seeds also? Will be thrilled to see everyone getting flowers from them..
Bonnie which RU are we going to? Two of them? OKAY I am in! Wichita Garden show in march! can't wait met some of the master Gardners already that are going to be there.. just found out there will be the owner from Kaw Valley nurseries at the next garden club meeting march the 9th..
These are some of my Zinnias..

Deb you MUST speak with Bonnie and be my special guest at my home and at our local RU. Can anyone say "ROAD TRIPPPPPPP!!!"

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Karen.. would love it.. my car is ready for the road.. well, both of them LOL I will give Bonnie a call tommorrow , not taking care of Pauline tonight....seems weird..

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

The loratadine and fish oil is working!! In the middle of the night Sami did scratch a little, but keeping on top of the problem. Got her peanut butter & pills this morning, if she does any more scratching I'll give her a whole pill. Also using the fish oil, 3 gels to a gallon of water, for my plants One problem solved thanks to all of you.

Looks like a sunny day, so better check on my brugs. I think I might have a couple of buds starting, so very tiny right now. Spring will soon be here, ya hoo. My son brought me another flower so have to look that up, it doesn't say I can put it in the garden so guess I'll be having a house plant. It is called Campanula Get Mee, lots of bell like flowers, very pretty.

Tomorrow Lent begins....Ash Wednesday. It will soon be Spring. Thank God! It took me all day to decide what I was going to give up for Lent and I have decided to give up sex.

Beautiful grandson 1AnjL, could reach out and give him a hug.

I'm really new at brugs so can't help you out either. I just noticed 3 tiny, tiny buds on my double pink one. Hope I don't lose them before I see beautiful blooms.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Morning everyone! Heya Cody marody! How are you doing girlfriend? I am feeling much better this morning, there is still weakness and a long road to recovery but I am on my way!

I got up this morning and had coffee in the greenhouse. My veggie seedlings look great!!! I need to take a picture and show ya'll the no transplant seeding method/system I'm using for flowers and veggies. Once you see it you'll "have to have", LOL!

Pegi glad to hear your little Miss Piggy is beginning to feel better. It will be a couple of weeks before you really see consistant results and no itching at all. We all hate to see our babies suffer.....

Linda Kay, are you still sporting around in that blue Mustang girl? Get any wolf whistles yet? hehe, gosh I would love to have a car like that.

JBerger, gosh darn you make me laugh with your observations of love and life. Sounds like my past has somewhat mirrored yours. So glad that God gave me Jerry in my old age to be a best friend as well as a husband. I can die happy now.

Deb, I'm thinking of you and Pauline dear...I hope you and her can have many moments of quiet happiness before she passes, and that she doesn't suffer...I love you and pray for you.

Hope you all have a great day, and I'll check in tonite. Love you all!

Hey Karen, Glad tohear your on the mend! I am still showing off the Mustang. No wolf whistles, but lots of comments everywhere I go! Even the postman came to the door, and ask about it!
I am off to do some shopping, and then laundry.
Can't wait to see your seed process.

Congrats on germination, Debra and Cody... baby Egg Plants??? Cool... I just love to look at new seedlings.. so fresh and full of promise.. how long did you have those buried? You make them sprout fast! I still have 4 egg seedlings from my first attempt... I'll start the ones Jeanne sent me when I get the seed room downstairs ready (still on this weeks agenda)... worked outside with the boys trimming trees yesterday... also had them out to the brick garage and we moved away the fallen ones on the corner so I can build a support for the roof before we DE-construct. Lots of mortar chipping to do. AnjL, love those lil future gardener pics.. nothing cuter... not even a brug bloom! Cody how is your little Alex?
My DD in KC and her BF have acquired a poogle... (poodle and pug mix) kind of a rescue, but I asked her if I need to think of him as my grandpuppy, (cause he'll be the closest I get to a grandchild ;) "Oates" , the grandpuppy, is about 8 mos old and Barb reports he's a very polite sweet good little dog. I haven't met him, yet but I do have a bag of goodies I picked up at the $store for him.
All these RU plans, seed starting, garden shows... wow what a busy spring it will be. Debra! Another road trip! And by then, I will get to see your gardens and containers planted...and maybe meet this Joe, you keep talking about, this time. Debra's Duke is just as sweet as he can be... keeps up with her (more than I could do-;) Don will have his tropical paradise moved outside and the palm trees uncovered.... maybe I should come the day before and we can get on the road early the next morning??? :) It will be a blast! Karen and Jeanne, you are so precious to open your homes! I'm so excited about the coming months.. so many things to enjoy. We'll work out the specifics.. Joycie? Cat? Wanna go to the TX RU??
Ok, JB.... are you sure THAT is what you want to give up for lent? Maybe sugar or honey?.... chocolate? You're a stronnnnng woman! ;) Karen, I love JB's recollections and always enjoy her posts, so much, too.. I like it that you're all giving your pets vitamins to ease their pain and frustration... I take vitamin E for hair and skin and the fish oil for heart and skin and it is a good anti-oxidant.
Chantell.. Hi! I've only smelled CG..of your list.. and I'm just getting going on smaller growing ones..Antique Lace has a very nice scent, as does Cassie's Curls.. but the heaviest scented one so far for me is Peach Versi.. but it's a taller grower.. great idea for the gift! How've you been?
Pegi, is that like a bell flower? (now you're making me look.. lol) Gotta get in gear- the morning is getting away from me.. smile everyone! People will wonder what you're up to... :)

Hey Linda Kay,i'm good thanks for asking.Mocha is doing much better.

LOL re the "grand-pup" - 2 of my neighbors have Puggles (Pug x Beagle) ...I can't even imagine - it's enough I felt the "need" to add what I fondly call a Pitador (Pit x Lab) to my crew...LOL. I'm so excited about planning these containers for my mom & sis (I decided)...neither are "plant" people but I figured if I threatened enough & put enough water absorbing crystals in the soil mix - they might stand a chance...

More energy going around on this thread and mine got lost somewhere. I do need some sunshine to keep me going.

Yes, Bonnie that campanula get mee is a bell flower, pretty purple. According to some of the information I read about them they can be put outdoors, not just an indoor plant.

I get a California Gardening magazine and just read they have a lilac bush for the milder climate, have to check into that more. I was going to quit taking it when my subscription expired, but when I started looking at the one that came yesterday I decided I'm going to have to subscribe again. So full of beautiful flowers and wonderful articles.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

pegi, what is the name of the magazine... I may need to check into that one! lol!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I posted this over on Brugs as well...but would anyone have or know where I could get a rooted Brugmansia Eternity cutting? I know it's an older variety but heard wonderful things about her scent. Happy to trade or pay postage. Thank for 'listening'

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Hi Pegi,, the campanula is a great bloomer for a long season and if you save the pods it leaves ( dead head) they keep blooming and you can spred them around with the dried seed pods ( they need to be stratified, tho)
Bonnie waiting patiently for spring couldn't believe it got up to 79 today didn't break the record of 81 i think in 1987...
I just know we have snow coming yet so I keep covering up the things popping up outside with leaves..

went out back to check the monster brug stump I left in the ground.. here is a pic Looks nasty but it is firm and I dug down and found good roots with baby shoots..( i piled coffee grounds all around it so it looks kinda blackish)

I dont have Eternity, or would gladly send you a cutting :o( sorry!

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

1AnjL, the name of the magazine is "California Gardening" and I just got the March/April issue. Always full of good information and beautiful pictures. I always like to look at back issues I keep as I always seem to find something I missed.

Debra. here is a dumb question, what does stratified mean? Good plant learning here from everyone.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Morning all! Pegi, stratification means the seed requires a period of cold dormancy/moisture (fridge) to force them into a dormancy, or dormant period to simulate what they would deal with in nature. STRATIFICATION cold with some damp, SCARIFICATION, nick seed/and or soak before planting.

I'm up with the chickens this morning, I MUST be feeling better! Looking forward to another good day, I'm doing (fingers crossed) well on the new medication, Depakote, and don't have to go back until Monday for another blood test, yippee!

I'm really starting to get Spring Fever...I am SO ready to feel good and work outside again. Hope everyone has a great day! Love you!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone.
Coffe is on! Time to wake up.
Karen thanks for the info. So glad to hear your feeling better too! Just don't over do it.
Do all seeds have to go through the dormant season to bloom again.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Morning Ladies, sounds like everyone, including Karen is up and at em this morning. I am so glad you are feeling better. I prayed for you, Karen, at Mass yesterday and I do hope you will be back to normal soon. I got my ashes and now I need to be a lady again.
As well as try and be a better person. I really am not as bad as I sound sometimes. I just get naughty and let it go. LOL God forgives me for that.

Today I must go pick up some more soil. I was going to make my own starting soil but I am too busy for that just now so I will just go buy some. I am hoping to spend half of today and all day tomorrow getting seeds in the ground, but I know it will take longer than that. I feel I am running out of time. Anxiety setting in.

Pegi, do not ever think any question is a dumb one. I have asked more questions in my 80 years than most people and I used to apologize for it. You will get answers from people who are caring and compasionate, the others who talk down to you or make you feel insecure are just ignorant, self centered people who have a need to feel important.
I see you got your answer so I will just say good luck. I did find one thing. When I had to stratify tree seeds, they said put them in moist peet moss in a plastic bag to keep them cold and moist. The problem I had was finding them afterwards in the peet moss because I used too much. It takes awhile for things to sink in my old head, but now I know what not to do. I have also found that some seeds just get stratified in the packs and it is not necessary to mix them with any medium. Now when I have seeds that need to be stratified, I check online how each of the different methods are used on what seeds. It helps alot. Just my thoughts on a very good question.
Have a wonderful day and hopefully Spring will be just around the corner. Hugs and God Bless. JB

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Okay girls, I finally got around to taking pictures of the wonderful seed starting system I am using.

The premise is this.....Each of your seeds is planted in medium in a little 5" plastic net pot, and their are 50 pots per tray. You put you soil (coconut coir is best, and comes with the tray) and then plant. The individual plants will root in their very own "cup". No transplanting into bigger pots later, and then again into the ground, ever! When it's time to plant outdoors, you simply lift the little net pot full of roots, plant it directly into the ground or container, and as it grows the rootball gets massive and the little pot cracks into pieces and falls away.

They grow faster, stronger and have MUCh more root than they'd ever get in a jiffy pellet. Here are a couple of pictures to show you.

The first here, is a Hardy Hibiscus seedling THREE DAYS after putting the seed into the coir. Look at this taproot! The seedling is only 1" tall

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

This is a squash plant 2 weeks after it hit the soil

Thumbnail by darkmoondreamer
(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

not a great photo, but here is the tray itself full of little seedlings.

Bob does sell the kit as a whole unit, including the coir, a super tall 7" dome and shipping for $24.95 but he sells many of the kit "pieces", just the tray and cups, only what you need. You can use your standard old 2" plastic domes on these, they are universal size trays. Self watering too! I leave one basket empty as my "water meter"

I pour water/fertilizer into the one basket until I see the level reach the bottom of it. The coir "wicks up" what water it needs so there is no chance of overwatering or damping off.

Then I just water every 3 days or so, when the level no longer touches the pot.

Karen - just ordered from instagarden - have used the coconut coir before - got the cups and coir - have trays, etc - need to get a light for seed starting - my DH traded out the indoor lightbulbs for flourescent - use them as gro lights for plants - but I think too far away for seeds - thanks

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Kittylover! You're going to love Bob's cups. Even if he wasn't my friend I will never use anything else again after using these. How much easier could anyone want, and with these results? LOL!

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

This coconut coir sounds like the perfect solution for me. I've been saving a lot of containers for starting seeds. This will help with patience, which I don't have very much of.

Karen and JBerger thanks for the information. Wonder why I never ran across these words before. I probably have but never paid any attention to them. I sure will now.

I remember when we gave up candy for Lent, and we never tried cheating on it either. When Easter came and we got our baskets I was in seventh heaven when I saw all the candy. I am such a chocolate addict now. Funny what things stick in your mind from the past.

Carrollton, TX(Zone 8a)

Pegi-

I've gotten coir discs reasonably priced from dg member bleek - I've used it both as potting solution for new plants, cuttings - I like it!
