Less than 30 days now!! Spring is around the corner!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

its not the suet it self as a it is but what you put into it
if you have actual peanutes or sunflower seeds
they will go after it or if they are hungry enough lol
they will eat anything ahhahahahaha

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

We saw the flock of waxwings again this morning in a different location in the 'hood. What fun!

Sherrie - I am probably in the minority in that I love the chipmunks. That one is quite the acrobat! I'll be he's pretty hungry!

Victor - my orchid is opening its first flower......I'll get a shot once the others open a bit. They're so pretty!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I love my chipmunks lol I dont like squirrels since they destroy everything

my kids have named our chipmunks lol will have to live trap some and take them elsewhere since we have to many of them now

It is plain suet.......and 15-20 feet away there is bird seed. This one must be spoiled.

Very loverly!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Beautiful, Louise! And they make a nice combo.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Very nice combo! Love them, particularly that yellow one!!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks, guys!! Pixie - the one that looks yellow is actually more of a lime green.....it doesn't photograph true to color at all. It was a cross my Mom made years ago.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Lime green with spots? Even better!!!!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Donniebrook, have you showed that cross to Boojum? I can't imagine her not lusting over it. I am a lime color lover. Patti

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

No, I haven't, Patti. I had to leave them down here with a babysitter last year, and they are both just now blooming. I love the combo of the lime and fuschia together.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I hope she sees your mothers cross. It is a lovely duo. We are heading back to New Orleans on the 17th for 10 days so I will get some heat and great eats. Patti

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Hi Louise,
Your mom's lime phal is wonderful. Patti knows me well, I love green flowers!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Fancy you finding a limey green flower. I was sure you would love it too. patti

Patti - have a lovely time in the Big Easy!!! It should be lovely while you are there! Such wonderful food!!!!

Kathy - glad you like my pretty limey phal....it is quite pretty! My Mom named and registered some new crosses, but not this one.

Mona - I didn't inherit my Mom's incredible talent with orchids either. I'm getting better, but orchid intelligence doesn't come naturally to me! LOL I'm just thrilled that both are blooming!

Congrats, Louise!!

Louise grab some cajun food for me - yummm

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

You must mean, Patti (bbrookrd). She's the lucky one with a son in NOLA! Yummmmm! My DBF is cooking shrimp and crab etouffee so I'm doing cajun tonight!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Kathy, Laissez le Bon temp rouler , I am drooling! Your DBF is an amazing chef.

Yes, I will eat very well will down there for sure, but we just found out that our DS won't have his normal Sunday off during Jazz fest which is sad as we had so hoped to do a bit of the fest with him in tow. He will be cooking his heart out at the Restaurant which is usually closed on Sunday, but not during Jazz fest. We will get some time with him at some point and of course eat some of his cooking on the house! Patti

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks, Kathy! Have a ball, Patti!!! [drooling here]

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

so when are you going to start the count down to summer since spring is here and not much as change here for me hahahhahahah

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I've already started the countdown. I spent 3 hours in 80 degrees of humidity this morning continuing my mulching and moving a few plants around. I made this extended "island", partly to keep the lawn guys from destroying the access point to our water lines. They always mow over it, and when we got here in Oct., it was completely open! So, I thought I'd accomplish a couple things at one time, and I created a new bed for my vinca seedings and extended the mulch around the cap so it is well protected from mowers now. The bottle brush/vinca plants were already there, so I just had to extend the bed. I also moved my Tibouchina to a place where it won't bake as much in the summer sun. I'm cutting it VERY close and I know it! LOL

Now, aren't you all just dying to comment on our lovely grass???? Unlike most people here, we don't have underground irrigation lines and picture perfect lawn. It is actually mostly natural ground covers that are thick and gorgeous and green when we arrive following the summer rains, but when the drought sets in, we barely have any grass. Of course, we are the ones who get all the unusual birds feeding on the worms, etc. in our "au natural" lawn. LOL

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

my lawn is the same way since with all the open fields its impossible to not get all the weeds and I dont want to poison my dog and kids so I just cut my weeds with the mower when needed and it looks nice and green all summer with no watering, so when it get really hot and everyones grass turns yellow my yard is still green and I think beautifullI keep adding a few grass seeds since I dont let the weeks go to seed so I am getting less as time goes by and more grass maybe someday it will be a lawn of grass and not a lawn of weeds hahahah

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

We don't irrigate our yard, which is hardly a "lawn" either. It turns brown usually in Aug, but that means less mowing needed, which is the one thing we don't do ourselves. Water is so precious, that I would rather save it for my trees and plants. Grass is nice, but just green. I am gradually reducing the size of it for more beds and shrubs. I am thinking I want in the end only ribbons of grass connecting all the beds.

I did broach the subject yesterday with DH over the cost of paying to have the grass mowed vs buying a ride mower and doing it ourselves. I grew up fighting with my 3 brothers as to who got to drive the one we had as kids. I loved it. Our yard would be too big to do with a walk one. DH is not convinced. I am thinking that I might look into them in the late fall when the dealers are wanting to clear them out to make room for snow blowers. Two seasons of doing it ourselves would pay for a nice one. Plus I could get some attachments. Getting older, so I like anything that might make my garden life easier. Patti

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

you will love it me and my mower are great friends I put on the ipod and take my bottle of water and cut away for hours just love riding the little thing just remember to do a good job you have to go slow and make sure its dry they say you can do wet with does such a better job
at my house I do what we call the soccer field one day that is about two hours
the next day I do the front lawn 1.5 hours and then the fun really begins with the back going up and down the hills 2 hours and then the secret garden take about 2 hours so I do a bit everyday and then when its really hot its only every two to three weeks
it would cost me a fortune to have it all done

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wow, You have a very large amount to mow. I would suspect that I could do all mine in less than two hours, plus the time to weed trim around the trees which would take as much. I am going to time the guy on his fancy stand up big rig this summer and then I could probably double or triple the time it would take me. I love the imagine of you bopping about on your trusty mowing steed. Patti

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Oohhh! attachments. A wagon to carry around all the plants or mulch or whatever you want.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

oh yes I have one got it off some guy on the side of the road for 100 dollars and its red and tilts so cut used it last fall when we chopped the wood to bring the wood to the house it is great

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I could die for a motorized cart. Patti

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

my little wagon attaches to my mower and it also turns into a mulcher which is amazing the two big cans and the cover so I ride the machine mulches and deposits the stuff in the cans so when they are both full I ride to the spot where I want it and empty them it takes so little time since the blades are used at the highest point and the grass is not being cut just the leaves and it does a great job about 60 bags into two bins
amazing since I have so many large trees

Mona and Patti - we have a "natural lawn" at the farm too, and like you, Mona, I keep throwing a bit of real grass seed here and there. The weeds up there are thicker and very lush, compared to here. One of the reasons why we actually like the non-groomed lawn here is evident in this photo I took this morning.....

This other photo from this morning is a clue why I keep looking out my sunroom window! It's a wowzer!!

Great plant and color combo. They scare me. Patti

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Scare you? Why?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

If I grew one successfully, I would probably go wild and get too many to fit in the GH. I would be lost in their huge growth and overwhelmed by their scent. I don't dare even think about getting one! I love seeing yours. I use to follow the Brug forum, but I never knew plants could get so political. That scared me too. Patti
