What have you ordered for spring 2009 part 4

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

My plan for poppies is to put them in a sandwich baggy with a tablespoon of damp soiless mix and leave them there until the snow melts outside. Then I will direct sow them. If there were no snow on the ground direct sowing - preferably before a light snow I heard does the trick. I have heard they are tough to transplant and if you do start them beforehand - to transplant them in clumps and while they are still small - only a set or two of leaves. That way out of the clumpsome should have not had their roots disturbed. : )

I placed an order with easy to grow bulbs - hopefully they will send quality stuff - they have almost all good reviews in garden watchdog.
Here's my order
Amarylis 'Desire' https://www.easytogrowbulbs.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1268

I did Oriental Poppies last year. I germinated them and put them into their individule 3" peat pots. Would not matter if they were plastic pots. Then I planted them in the ground. OOPS - wrong place and moved them. They did not like to be moved at all.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I just ordered Lily Landini and Hardy Geranium Patricia

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Ge I was thinking of ordering Patricia -mostly because it is my Mom's name. I also want a Viburnum Diane because that was my late Mother in Law's name. I just haven't decided if I should order them because I am hoping to find plants at local places. Although it seems I never find all the things I find in online shopping, at local places.
Thank you Onewish - That is good to hear. Looked like you got good begonia ?tubers? I don't know if that is what they are called lol. I am still trying to decide on dahlias, they did have one I was interested in. I just don't know if I can handle the resposibility of digging them up and storing them every year. lol

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I planted crocosmias last year, and they did well.
There wrer some here when we moved in 2 years ago that never bloom.
I'm giving them one more chance and "out they go"
I want something else.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I tried some before from a package at wally world. I am such a sucker in spring. If I see any form of plants I can't help but try it a t least once. Well they did end up blooming- but they were yellow and looked nothing like thepictureon the box. They didn't make it through the winter. I have heard Lucifer is the best for that - the ones I had were def. not lucifer. I also think I need them in a better spot than I had them - more sun, somewhere that is warmer in cool weather. Figure I might as well give it a go. Our winters here are usually more like a zone 6 - after all I am only a 10 min drive to tyngsboro mass.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Talking about them made me look it up in my journal-I have a pic of them in there. http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/viewentry/94352/ It made me remember something kinda funny and kinda scary at the same time. The next spring - I dug up what I thought were the crocosmia returning - and planted them all in a bed at the end of my driveway. It gets the most sun here and it is nice and hot. So I figured it would be perfect. Well they never bloomed, I figured it was because they resented me for moving them. Come the next spring they came back with a vengeance! I was so happy when they appeared to be forming blooms- until they opened and I realized they were something else! I think it's called Quack Grass- I was told it is very invasive - and from what I saw - IT WAS.
Well I asked for an ID here on DG and guess what.... I ended up spending and entire day trying to dig every last piece out of the ground - digging up daffodils and crocus bulbs along the way! I bagged them and put them in the trash!!

The yellow crocosmia came to me in a mixture I bought from Brent and Beckys last spring, oddly enough they are the ones that bloomed from the mixture, the reds and oranges didnt.
They like some shade but not a lot.
I grew Lucifer at my old house and was nieve about how diffacult they are to grow, never had any problems with them and figured they were easy.
These grew under a Dogwood tree and got afternoon sun.

Oooooo..... so pretty! It is funny you say they grew under a dogwood tree. I just read somewhere that they are best planted near tree roots!? I found it odd.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I hadnt heard that but mine were getting ready to divide when I moved.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I can't remember for the life of me where I read that. Did you manage to take some with you by chance?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I had so much to do packingand moving a 10 room house and tossing stuff and deciding what I absolutly needed that would fit into a 750 sq.ft. apt in my daughters house.
It was too late when I was done.
Its illegal to take plantings from a home after you list it on the market, here in New York Satate
I moved in july just befor they started to bloom. Doubt they would have stood the trauma.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Too bad - moving is way too hectic! Wow I didn't know it was illegal! I would be sure to put it in the purchase and sale agreement in the future- lol! It would read - Seller is allowed to take any plants she would like from property (proir to closing -of course)! Most people will just dig up most of the stuff and toss it anyway! Especially lawn lovers!! : (

Lilium henryi

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Ahh I see what everyone is raving about! Very nice. The shape reminds me of my philadelphia lily. Of course L. henryi is much larger! : )

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Call me weird, but I'm not crazy about that one. The petals are too curved back with the stamens and pistil sticking so far out. Looks like it's puking them out!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Oops I meant lilium michaganense Do you think this one is puking too? lol http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/si/180147/

Henryi, I love it, as it has attitude! The last week of July it just lights up the place. Tons of blooms. Last July 22. I planted it in 2006.

Quoting:
2.67 ord 2 LILIUM henryi 20/22cm Forms 4 to 10 large, orange flowers on pedicels held horizontally, often carrying two pendent flowers each. Segments 2 3/8-3 1/8 inches long, with numerous raised papillae on basal half of inner surface. Leaves shiny, dark green, becoming crowded below the flowers. Height usually 5-7 feet.

Everyone should shuffle off to buffalo, cool posting. Thanks

Meredith 79, you grow some great ones, plus the photos are stunning. I would love to have more species lilies. I grow Lilium speciosum var. album and Lilium hansonii which are both lovely. I ordered a couple more for this spring .

Lilium cernuum
Lilium pumilum
Lilium canadense

Check out this site with a list of species lilies if you like them. Boojum grows some beautiful L. canadense. Hers are orange. Here is L hansonii in June of last year. Patti

I apologize for the bad spelling and wrong ID for the hacked lilies at my old house.
No wonder there are so many missnamed varieies, guess I'm contributing to the coinfusion.

This is the clump I tried to dig when my house went on the market.
As you can see houses were close together and that 15 foot strip 3feet deep was nearly the only garden I had, hence the tubs down either side of the driveway and at my studio door.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

The house was built in the late 20's and had a concrete driveway to the back of the property but not all the way to the garage.
We made a lawn from where the concrete ended to the garage that was too small for 1950's car.
This is my driveway garden, many of you have seen it but just incase!

Robindog I did try it the same time I got the crocosmia from walmart -cheap - it didn't flower or overwinter, but that's not saying much since they were from a box sitting in walmart. I think some people dig them up and store them every year. I plan to try some in the ground overwinter, and to dig a couple up just in case. I ordered 3 different types, one is a type high country gardens has listed as hardy to zone five. One of the ones I got from easy to grow bulbs says hardy to zone five the other says 6. I started some from seed too. It has me thinking about where the warmest part of my yard is, probably my front garden close to the house. I have a passiflora incarnata there, it has made it through 2 winters so far but it hasn't grown more than a foot high. I am keeping my fingers crossed they'll be perennial here. If not- after trying 4 types then I will have to give up on them. I'll let you know how it goes. : )
Patti, thank you for the compliment - those rubrums called to me from catalog pages - I just had to have them - lol. : ) I have been dying to get my hands on a lilium canadense called apple red - the only place I've ever seen it offered is at the newfs. I got seeds from them about 3 years back for it. There is a small chance I have some seedlings - if they make it through winter. Even if they do it will probably be at least 3 years - maybe 5 before I see a flower. The only chance of getting one from newfs is calling every week to see if they have them in the nursery area. They told me they only take so much stuff out at a time. So it is hit or miss if you just show up. You can pre-order stuff but there is a minimum - I think it went up to $300 last year. Of course I could find that much stuff I want it's just a matter of keeping myself from spending all my money when I am starved for plants this time of year! LOL
GE love all your lilies : )

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

My guess on the Crocosmia hardiness is that they are almost tolerant of zone 6, as I had them growing in my front yard for a couple of years, blooming well, then, one year nothing.

My guess was, much like this winter, the temps went down too low (for too long) for their liking.

As we see in Florida, etc. with the citrus, etc. freezing, that there is no safe place on occassion. Everywhere is out of their "zone" on occassion.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Makes sense Willi
If mine dont reappear this year I'll just go bck to the ctalogues
