Has everyone noticed the catalogs are starting to repeat and the e-mails are coming fast and furious now. It is hard to resist. I usually don't look, that is the best way not to be tempted. I did look at Sooner e-mail. Oh my, I am being strong but I want a redbud one of these years. What goodies are particularly tempting you?

I imagine people (not DGers, of course) are cutting back some, so they are pushing harder. Bad timing in my opinion for GC to introduce veggies to their offerings. Too $$, just like their annuals.

I think its only bad if you steal the actual plant from their garden. Although I did that once to prove a point: that my buddy had no idea what he had. After he didn't notice for a month I put a bow on it and gave back it back to him as a present. He was so touched to get a 'new' plant'. I still ROFL over that over one.

sorry sherrie - i was just surprised to see it there - it wasn't the last time i looked - their trees are large so it would be worthwhile to find it some place local and dodge freight that would be expensive

fairweather is a little pricey in comparison - and i will not be ordering it - weeping redbud - i do not have one ---------i have two :)

It looked like the size was larger, too, hence the larger price.

You two are not helping my willpower at all. I have a couple of nice spots for one but would have to move a few things around first. Thanks for the additional source just in case. Maybe in the fall? Hmmm, okay now I really need to stop thinking of this. I will really like to hear about your new one this spring Jan. It is very pretty isn't it.

I'll be picking it up 4/4 at one of their Open Houses. Redbud is one of mom's favorites, so I thought she would like this one. I'll plant it so she can see it out her window. I just realized the date 4/4 will be one year since mom was put on hospice care. We never would have thought she would have made it to May. We are thankful.

Victor - I'm not sure the leeks are still growing - but they hang out under a pile of mulch and can be pulled and eaten all winter. Not much else is edible "out there" at this time.

Oh Bill is that the Burgundy Heart? Its a beauty all right. Are they fast growers? That one will be a large tree right? I wish I had taken down some of the oaks and pines sooner and planted some nicer trees. By the time any I plant now will be large and beautiful I will be either fertilizer or too old and blind to see them. This of course will not stop me from planning, spending and planting. :)

Okay edit to say that I just reread your post above. So that is one of the weeping ones. How big a space do I need to plant one? Now see you are getting to me again. Not fair at all. What size was yours to start and how big a hole to pop in one of those babies?

I have Forest Pansy and like it a lot. Great purple leaves all season.

you will like it - i have a soft spot for redbud as well - i have a bunch of varities here - many are new and most from sooner's

my other got damaged last winter and it is alive although not sure if it is still a weeper - looked like the new growth last year came from below the graft - still watching it and if it turns out to be only an eastern red bud i'll just plant on the property line down back for color.

Loved all the photos & stories--you're all correct that kids crave discipline--it helped that both my DH & I were in educ.--DS's friends were very respectful! Guess I've decided on 'Marie Louise Jensen" for my clem---I don't have a purple one.

Pat - red buds grow fast - trust me you will be able to enjoy them - just the leaf shape alone is nice - and victor is right the forest pansy is nice as well - i have one of them too - the burgundy heart is supposed to be a deep purple all year - the leaves do not turn green as they get older - although that two-tone look is nice on the forest pansy - and FP is readily available at nurseries with only a little searching and they tend to be larger

like i said above i like red bud's so i am "collecting" them :)

Posted edit in post above too late for you to see I think. We have two large white pines on a lower spot at turn of the driveway that need to come down this spring. When that gets leveled out I would love to put a few nice trees in including a large redbud. We will see how it goes, the best laid plans and all that you know. What's a good evergreen tree that doesn't get too tall?

the one's i received were purchased from miller nurseries i believe or stark brothers - they were bare root with very large root systems - i over wintered them in large tree containers i had lying around they needed over 12" deep containers. - so with all that may be a 2' round hole or a little bigger.

for an evergreen that does not get too tall - hemlocks are always good because you can keep them trimmed - even a typical blue spruce or Fraser firm can be kept to height by pruning - arborvitae is another - unless you looking for something special then your talking real $$.

I can put in trees, but with the DH job on the line, I cant put the 2-3 grand in like I did last year. I cant buy one tree, Unless I get a job and there is none....

I have to succumb to seeds.

seeds are still good - going to plant more tonight i think - flowers this time - hedging my bets on the winter sowing - so they will all be re-seedlings

Well I want something to block out the neighbors but not tall enough to be a hazard like the white pines. Twenty-five or thirty feet tops. I would like some rhodos or other nice evergreen shrubs if I could be sure Bambi and friends wouldn't be munching them all winter. First we have o get rid of what's there now and grade the area better.
A two foot round hole sounds like I could squeeze one of those weepers in okay, could be a plan this fall. I can clear a space this spring and mark the spot. Now to decide where to put the little cutie. Thanks guys for all the advice.
