Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice, Patti. No - don't have that one.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Just got Park Seeds annual/tropical catalog today...they make all their stuff look so great...too bad they always sub what you really want.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

hit or miss for sure... I still usually buy a few six packs of annuals from them every year... if they don't live they do make good on them

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Victor, you gotta get kinky! Sorry

That red tulip is Tulipa 'Red Impression' Darwin Hybrid and it was a bonus from ROOZEN for ordering early in 2006 . Slight chance it could 'Come Back' also a Darwin, but I recall liking the form on the 'Red Impression' better which I also planted in 2006. I am now labeling them. I haven't planted a red one since in that bed. This year will be sad if none come back. Love that name. The Darwin 'Banja Luka' which I also planted in 2006 did not return last year unless it bloomed when we were away for 10 days. I am going to get the dog sitter to take a picture of the beds every couple of days this April when we are gone. Hate missing by babies, but I want to also see my now not such a baby DS for his birthday in late April. Patti

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

nothing wrong with contorted filberts

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

OK, here is the big news. My first box of plants have arrived. A big box of bare-root roses. I think we can dig a hole this week end and plant them or should I pot them up and leave them in the GH until it is later in March? I am going to seek advice on the rose forum, but so many who post there are in much warmer zones. I expected these early, but hadn't really thought about what to do when they arrived. Gorgeous plants, huge! ZuZu wrote about this place. They only charged 5.00 for shipping. Patti

They all sound lovely! Sniff....yup can almost imagine the smell.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

But pixie, what do I do? Plant them or Pot them? Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

If the ground is not frozen, I would plant them.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What is the source?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Victor, S and W greenhouse, but I think they are done shipping for the year. Some have buds? Does that make a difference? I have room in the GH or basement which has natural light on the north side and we keep it in the mid 60's.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Either way would be fine. If you're not confident/comfortable, just leave it in the GH.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Ok, I will venture forth tomorrow with a shovel and see if I can plant them. Logical. If I can't, they will get potted up and stashed in the GH next to that nice Jade tree I am still growing for you Victor. Off to print labels. Thanks, Patti

Where's Kassia???? she'll know what to do

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I posted in one that I know she follows (she started it). Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I googled and most sites said the same. Late winter for not so cold areas and early spring for the colder.

South Hamilton, MA

It would be greenhouse here, but we are colder than you are even though near Gloucester.

Thomaston, CT

I ordered from a rose nursery in Maine(now defunct) & the directions were to plant roses as long as the ground was not frozen--BUT they didn't mention budded roses---that may be quite different. And you guys are way too funny---needed a good laugh today.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I look at it from the point of view of labor.
If you have other plant orders comming soon why not plant now so you will have that job done.?
They look great. Cant wait to see the blooms.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Thanks all, heading out to try to plant 6 of them. I realize 4 are going into spots that I need to be able to see the emerging bulbs to avoid damage and that hasn't happened yet. It makes no sense to dig up bulbs that I just planted in Dec. So 4 will go into the GH and hopefully, if I can dig, the rest iwill get planted today into their permanent home. Let the planting season begin! Patti

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Sorry Patti, didn't see the question but you gots lots of good advice! I would of recomended you ask Kassia or Jan (Grampapa) too. lol

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Bill-ie? -y? (Do you hate that as much as I do?)

Here is the Aroma 2 Basil, started at the same time, to compare to the Mammoth.

It is just to the point where I am going to transplant them .... probably today or tomorrow.

I JUST might have a surprise for everyone this afternoon, but I will wait to let y'all in on it.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Willie Do I recall the giant Basil sprouts in one pot?
Did you transplant the seedlings to those plastic pots?
I am going to attempt Oriental Poppies and wondered if I shouls try for one or two seeds per poop pot and thin them.
Their root system is sensative to disturbing so I figured the ones removed would be a loss.
Any advise.?
I also posted on the Poppy forum, just cruising for more info.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes, JoAnn ... I started the Mammoth Basil in a 4" all together to sprout, just like the Aroma 2 is shown above.

I transplanted the Mammoth about 4 or 5 days ago into the teenie tiny 2" pots, as they were crowding each other out already!

I have heard that about poppies, as well .... I think I have been hearing that they are a great candidate for direct WSing in their desired spot .... though, input from the knowledgeable would be of more help here.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

As I understand it, annual poppies can be direct sowed in the winter, but Orientals are different.
I 'll keep haunting the poppy forum.
