Merideth,Just jumping in here to caution you about White Flower Farm and VanBourgundien
This is my personal experience and others have had OK experiences with both, but if you can find the same varieties with anyother nursery do it.
I did business with both for years and then things changed, small plants that failled to thrive.
What have you ordered for spring 2009 part 4
Meredith79, too funny, that is one that I was going to recommend. I have grown it for the last couple of years. I will post a picture of one in my garden when I get on the computer with the photo's stored on it. Not as grand as that catalog picture, but pretty nice and in the colors you love. Patti
Just ordered three more heucheras for edge of walk in new Woodpile garden
Heuch: Sashay
Gingerale
Tieramisu
Wha, no Jmaple time under my belt. I know more about the Jpitchers with the red sox.
Planted three in 2008 and have one that we have had since about 1990. I have just ignored that one. It is in the wrong place visually. It was a very sweet gift that came with no tags from some non gardening friends to us during a bad patch. I may try to move it. I don't know what it is, but it is small, less than 5' , yellow in the fall, green in the summer. My pruning job is bad. I will post a picture for you and Victor to figure out for me.
If I think I should move it, then do I root prune it this spring and move in the fall or what? Patti
pretty
ge thanks that is what I was worried about. For the prices they are charging I would expect a good size blooming plant.
Patti I would love to see a picture. I tried searching all of them to see pictures from real peoples gardens. Some of them I couldn't find any pics others only one or two. The catalogs always make the colors look different than what they look like in real life. : )
I sometimes "google image" a plant to see how it grows like tall and wavey or short and bushy.
There are other plants around them that give me ideas for companion plants.
I am fussy about color, and realize I will just have to wing it for really close matches.
You are right about colors on nursery sites, the same plant can change from one photo to another.
Daves G people can tell you about certain plants behaviors. I am hoping for a review of Teramisu heuchera and Ginger Ale.
patti - usually they do not have huge root balls - i've moved a few large ones without losing them - i would only trim any roots that were damaged while digging it up.
not sure if i will be much help on the id - post on the jm forum as well
Yes, I would move it in the fall, Patti. being small, I agree with Bill - don't bother with any root pruning.
Meredith79, Here is a collage of a few in your color range from my garden including 'Alfred Grille' as well as a 'aloha' and a 'jeanne d'arc' and a rose which is your colors that is called 'flutterbye' and an lily called 'satisfaction' and a tulip that is called 'antoinette (goes through 4 color changes) and a few others. Patti
patti you should prune it now while it is dormant - and i've moved mine in the early spring in the past - fall is also a good time
I prefer fall because you have two growing seasons before dealing with summer heat.
just ordered 3 iris from Siberian Iris Gardens
Sib.Charming Billy
JI Confetti Dancer
Butterflies in Flight
Your choices are nice, JoAnn---I know the heuchera, but am only familiar with SI Flight of Butterflies. Am happy you folks scored so many JMs---good luck with them---am awaiting my single one with joy.
i don't think it is a virdis because it would be weeping more - although one of mine a few years old was staked and is taller - although it wants to weep in the worst way. Did you post it on the jm forum?
not yet, kinda shy, or lazy. I will. I don't have any good pictures of it. Patti
Patti I am drooling over all those flowers!! Thank you for the eye candy : )
Venu, that Who Dunit Dahlia is very pretty!!! Nice, luscious color.
Karen
Yes I love that one too : )
Patti, I know you know a lot about winterberries - which of these winterberry would you get if you were me? I am dieing to have some and a neighbor down the road has one growing so it must be possible here. : )

Do seed orders count? I just got a huge seed order in the mail from dianesseeds.com I added them to my journal so instead of typing them all out here they are http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/vbc/Meredith79/73280/
I also got the stuff I ordered from t&m http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/vbc/Meredith79/73281/
I ordered them both the same day and got them both the same day. : )
Meredith, you have a great list there. How did you ever manage to get your order from T&M the same day you ordered it on? I'm still waiting for mine, which I ordered I think last Wed. Hope they come before I leave for 10 days to go to Texas. I will be gone for 10 days and want to get them sown before I go.
Karen
Oh no not the same day - I ordered it Feb 14th. It was my Valentine's day present to myself ; ) I ordered seeds from Diane's the same day. I got them both in today's mail. : )
Oh, I see!!! LOL! Silly me!
Karen
No silly me! I re read what I wrote and I could see how you wouldn't pick up what I was trying to say : )
You guys are tempting me terribly and I'm already out of room!
Victor - have you grown any JMs as bonsai? I dug up a volunteer seedling from the neighbor's yard and have it in a bonsai pot in the garage....
Deb
I have no idea where I am going to fit all this stuff! I have no new beds ready yet! I work better under pressure though. : )
Hi Deb. No I have not, though I have kind of trained seedling JM's in the ground to stay small. I wish I had the patience for true Bonsai, but I don't.
I bought from Diane's seeds a few times... always good experiences ... nice list Meredith!
This is my third time ordering from there. I have had good experiences too : )
I have ordered so much stuff this year although I swore I would not. It started innocently enough with some seeds from swallowtail. Then the real buying started. I got nutso. Not to mention the gift certificates, gift cards, and some cold hard cash that I have tucked away for Fairweather and Rarefind. Those are my favorites as they are personal visits rather than mail order. But, still , I'm only at 50% of my usual spring orders, so all in all I have shown restaint I guess. Not much though, I'm a plant wimp.
Meredith79, When you grow Ilex verticillata, you need a male for a group of females as the female is the ones with the red/orange/yellow berries. You must get the correct male for the female type. The male can be planted with the female if you only want one, but I think that looks odd to have half of a tree with berries and the other half bare. I like Avant gardens.
Jim Dandy' is a pollinator for such early-flowering female ilex verticillata as 'Red Sprite' 'Afterglow', 'Goldfinch', 'Maryland Beauty', 'Aurantiaca', 'Stop Light', 'Shortcake', 'Earlibright', and 'Berry Heavy', while Southern Gentlemen' is the male pollinator for 'Winter Red','Shaver','Capapon', 'Sparkleberry', 'Sunset' and 'Winter Gold' and other later blooming female ilex verticillata.
So many more named ones in different sizes, shapes and colors to chose from. I have been reading, but have none in the ground yet. I do have a bunch coming this spring, bare root ones though a wholesaler. They will be small. I wanted a range of berry color and ultimate size. I also wanted some that held their berries into the winter better than others. But it will be a long time before we see any color. The birds will love us.
3 Ilex verticillata 'Afterglow'
1 Ilex x 'Bonfire'
5 Ilex verticillata 'Cacapon'
1 Ilex verticillata 'Earlibright'
1 Ilex x 'Sparkleberry'
1 Ilex verticillata 'Stop Light'
1 Ilex x 'Apollo' male
1 Ilex verticillata 'Jim Dandy' male
1 Ilex verticillata 'Southern Gentleman' male
5 Ilex verticillata 'Winter Gold'
3 Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red'
I've ordered from Diane as well. You know she subscribes to Dave's. I happened to see a photo in Plantfiles that was on her website. When I dmailed the photo owner, it turned out to be Diane. I can't remember her DG name though.
Hi everyone - I just spent a good part of the morning trying to get on here. My computer kept trying to install updates and would not start up! I had to system restore twice, then when I finally resolved that I saw my anti virus was expired! JUst like that with no warning. They usually remind me in advance so I don't know what was up this time. I ended up uninstalling it and getting the free version from comcast, I had Mcafee anyway - so why pay for it when they are providing it free! lol
Thanks Patti - so do you think ordering the ones from Avant is a good idea or bad?
Anita - I noticed the same thing : ) I think she is lily_lover_ut - I have never seen her on any threads but I have seen her many pics in the plantfiles. She takes beautiful photos. : )
Yes she does. It was funny - here I thought someone was using her website photos and taking credit for them.
Lol - I think I thought the same thing! : )
Did pick up a pkg of 'Mystery Rose' forget-me-nots, Shirley poppies, double peony poppies---all direct sown--if the snow ever melts. Love the list of winterberries, Patti!
I have directsown Shirlies.Hoping for doubles mixed.
