Part Cinco: Breath Deep and Tell Us What Smells Wonderful

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

The first little humble bloom from STROPHANTHUS GRATUS, rose allamanda. It really does smell like a rose. I am grateful since I adore roses but they are just one venture that in this climate is too much for me! Wherever you are, 2009 is here and spring will be soon, too. Sit back, take a deep breath, and tell us what smells good in your garden!

Speaking of roses....due to Nery's continuing praises of 'Sweet Chariot' I have placed my order for one of those and another mini rose - Scentsation, I think...I believe I've done more then my fair share of damage with recent plant and seed orders...Nor'East, Tops, Almost Eden, Buggy Crazy, Gardengrower...then there's the seed orders from Trade Winds, Select Seeds...thank you, Uncle Sam for tax returns - going green with the green Checking out Plant and Gnome http://www.plantandgnome.com/ as well - hmmm, really good prices over there...
F4F - that blooms just plain smells good just looking at it...what's the scent like?

Good girl, C. With 4 different sources, I have bought about 50 lilies. Crazy! Luckily, I have made a list of each cultivar, color, height and where I will plant .

That rose allamanda sounds delish. But 1) I generally don't do vines 2) allamandas don't like me

Bummer, I don't have anything fragrant going on right now.

My Stephanotis smells luscious! It was a splurge, but so worth it... the buds are only about half opened into blooms, so I think it may continue to flower for a while.

My other little jasmine decided to try to step up and opened a little bloom of its own today... poor thing, it just lost all its leaves to spider mites last month, but it's putting out new growth after a good pruning and already has a bloom! That has been one tough little plant.

Speaking of tough, Chantell your little passie is resurrecting again. Eliot chomped its leaf (yes, it has just one at that point) last month, and now it has several leaves (and has been moved to a corner where the kitty hopefully won't notice it).

You shopping girls. Love yah! Chantell, it smells like roses- like the old time, rose water, what classic roses smell like. It carries, or you can stick your nose in it. Quite sweet and I think this plant is very unique.

Vossner, I do OKtoGOOD with allamandas. I understand. But, this plant is not an allamanda. It is just called that, but they are not quite so related.

Critter, so glad you have some nice blooms to sniff! Next time those mites show up take your plant outside and hose it down....sternly!

Pic of the new variegated Stephanotis. Not much meat for this forum, but it wins pretty points......hope the blooms are by any other name, just as sweet!

F4F - I, for one, enjoyed the scent of the blooms on my variegated Stephanotis. The scent didn't carry and wasn't a heavy scent - didn't knock you over like the Maid of Orleans but I really liked it...hmmm how to describe it....a softer jasmine scent but definitely fragrant!! And excuse my brain-deadness...you said rose scented in your first post - sheesh...time for bed obviously...LOL
Jill - I've lost my fair share of jasmines and God knows I've not got the rooting of cuttings down quite yet but all in all they're pretty tough little cuties...Tomboys of the fragrant world...LOL. And I promise you if that passi doesn't pull through I WILL have PLENTY to share...seriously please don't worry about it...I couldn't get rid of them if I wanted to at this point. Luckily I LOVE them so they shall stay...so easy once they're established.
ALL: someone had asked once for a month by month with the blooms - either here or on Mid Atlantic - came across this site while surfing - know some may not be applicable to all zones but found it interesting just the same; http://www.plantandgnome.com/new_page_1.htm

Hosing down for spider mites does work wonders -- in summer! LOL

Spring is sure springing up around here. My Daphnes, Winter Honeysuckle, Camellias and Hellebores are still going strong and now being joined by Daffodils, Crocus and my very unruley Carolina Jessamine taking over my poor arbor bench. Gee does it need a hair cut, especially since it competes with my Confederate Jasmine on one side!

Oh and the scent of my new Camellia 'Fragrant Pink' just came to me--Hyacinth! Which is good because they don't do well here, 2 years if I'm really lucky :(

Who all grows dianthus First Love? I was reading yesterday that is is a frag. plant. Sure enough, I put my nose close to mine (and my behind up in the air) and it was very lovely. I like this plant because it's a blooming machine, the frag. makes it extra special. Might be better to grow in a pot, so it's easier to enjoy the scent. With it planted inground, well, it's kinda difficult.

Did you start that Dianthes from seed? That's an item I would rather buy- I'm too impatient! If you think it is common I will look for it. Unfortunately Dianthes is an annual for me.....just gets too hot eventually.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I have no earthly idea which one I have...I planted it the first year or two after moving into my TH and God love it...it just gradually spreads....filling the air with that sweet baby powder scent...I love it!!

Despite loosing ALL but 2 leaves the Radermachera Kunming I purchased has bloomed...sadly I can not for the life of me detect any scent morning or evening. Excuse the poor pics...here's the cluster

Here is a single bloom

This one smelled pretty good though...believe it's a 'Mariah' - could be wrong though...LOL

But this one...labeled 'Chloe' (closely related to the Mariah) seems to be invasive...first in one spot then another...very hard to keep under control

hahahaah!

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Chantell, what a hoot! That are mighty purdy blossoms.

I'm gonna tell tales... No wonder you were voted "life of the party!"

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ugh...HS days that will haunt you forever and ever...

Happy Anniversay - my friend!!! You've been a blessed addition to our crazy bunch

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Thanks Chantell! I remember you were one of the very first friends I've met here!!!

Hugs!!!
Introducing: Cattleya walkeriana v. alba 'Pendentive' AM/AOS Cant' wait for the scent to arrive - as I recall it was close to a tuberose scent to my nose.

And it appears the Persian Lilac might be starting to wake up...just barely

Hello all. Happy one year, robcorreia. Chantell, I am not familiar with Persian Lilac. What can you tell me about it?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1444/ Smells positively yummy...doesn't get as big as her cousins...but big enough. Seems to be an easy plant - not prone to any cooties that I've been aware of. Was one of those rare TREASURES you randomly find at Walmart if you "happen" in at the right time. 3 gal pot for $9.97ish...a few years ago - listed as a "special buy" - someone had carried one inside and then decided against buying her. Don't cha' know I scooped her up carrying her around the store with me till I got a cart...was so NOT putting that baby down!! Little possessive at times - what can I say?

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Thanks! One more must have for the day.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Witch hazel! The spidery yellow blooms on mine are fully open, so I leaned in very close for another sniff... ooOOOhhhhh mmmmMMMMMmm... very sweet, reminding me of honeysuckle. Maybe when the tree is older and bigger it will waft the scent across the yard as advertised...

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Chantell you crack me up! I can just picture you hugging that 3gal pot and walking around walmart!

I wish I could grow witch hazel and lilacs...it's embarassing that I don't even know what they smell like, but I can imagine...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh Roberta...cant' help with the Witch Hazel, I have no idea what it smells like either...but tell ya what...how about If I send you some lilac blooms (when they bloom)..would that make it easier?

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

haha Chantell, that would be awesome! But I don't think it would work...I doubt it would still be fragrant after suffering the shipping time...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I think it would...your bruggie made it to me..lilac scent wafts and lasts for some time...you must have faith in me...

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Some of my favorite pics of my 2 year old son are sniffing lilac blooms on a Mother's day trip home to PA. I am with Chantell. They lasted well as cut flowers, too from what I remember.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ahhhh....love those types of pics

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Chantell, I do have faith in you my friend! : )

Last night was really fun. My son (8) and I did a "fragrance contest". We walked around the garden and rated the blooms according to fragrance. The Gardenia won (it was rated 11 out of 10, lol!). I really like the smell of hyacinths, and he made a disgusted face when he smelled it, haha! He didn't like it at all, it was funny.

I've been told now by more then one "expert" (F4F let me know if this is true) that what the male sense of smell perceives as good can be vastly different from the females. Interesting eh?

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

it makes sense....My DH and I never agree on fragrances. I love wearing floral perfumes and he ALWAYS complains, he thinks it's too sweet! So I had him go to the mall and pick a couple of samples he would like me to wear...and they smelled like guy's perfume! Sorry dear, I don't want to walk around smelling like a man!!!

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Oooh, Chantell am I a medical researcher now, too? ;-P I read an interesting article on pheramones once a long time ago- some people seem to be able to smell them, some don't even though humans allegedly lost that organ somewhere along the way from caveman to now.

Rob, that's funny about what your DH picked out. Hmmm.....speaking of perfume I always went for the jasminy- heady types. Not at all like my plants!

I got an Arenga engleri today (dwarf sugar palm.) Yayyyyyyyy! Hope it is big enough to flower.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

JT's got that 'Orange Sunshine' that F4F raved about on the Market Place (1 left...I nabbed the other one) and on his website...just an FYI.
And I am relieved to add that I "FOUND" the scent on my Radermachera Kunming - not strong, mind you...but a pleasant one!!
F4F yepper you be the medical researcher...I cant' help unless psych related ya know?!!!
