What are your non-gardening hobbies?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Sorry! I'm sure you won't have any cockroaches on your flight.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I don't like to fly because I want the other front row seat next to the Pilot. So, I help hold the plane up in the air by digging my fingers into the armrest. Works like a charm!

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Flying really is safe, have no fear Deb. We're all here to talk about our horror stories, so what does that say. What I think everyone hates is that we're not driving. It's a no control issue.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

JoAnn - lovely painting!

Allison - that video was wonderful! My younger sister did barrel racing and my older sister showed in English saddle, so I went to lots of horse shows as a kid. I was into ballet, so didn't get into the horses. I can see how talented you are, and your horse is beautiful. Thanks for sharing that video.

As I read through this thread, it struck me what an interesting and accomplished group of people frequent the NE Forum. I love seeing the diversity of interests with gardening as the common interest of us all. And yet, so many of us enjoy much the same things in one way or another. Has anyone noticed how easy it is to talk to each other at the RUs?

As for my non-gardening hobbies/interests - reading, walking, some golf, cooking when I'm in the mood, painting terra cotta pots, birdwatching, canoeing, going to theater productions (repertory, traveling Broadway productions, etc.) home design, Red Sox spring training games, watching Boston Legal, McNeil/Lehrer; listening to news shows on MSNBC and Fox while I'm painting pots; antiquing and going to antique/collectibles auctions. I used to do cross-stitch, but my eyes can't take it anymore.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

We usually fly at least twice a year, and I've only had one scary flight, so that really isn't bad. I just don't like it.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I actually prefer the small planes over the big, commercial jets. You can see so much.

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

Victor,
Biggest one is 1.2 Kilos. A bit bigger than fist sized.

Smallest is a lunar about the size of a ball point pen tip. 4mm x 2mm. Photo on my web site.

If you're interested D-mail me and I'll provide a list of some dealers.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Some list, Louise!

Thanks Tommy!

I bought all the supplies today to make my "Home Sweet Home" embroidery. Yaaaay! While I was there, I saw knitting and crochet needles... now I want to knit and crochet too.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

LOL on the seeing and then wanting. I have some yarn sitting around for a 'rainy day' I was going to make a spread for a bed. I crocheted 3 of the 4 sons a spread for their beds. I did it while sitting in bleachers watching basketball games. 2 of them were in one piece with double yarn. They were really heavy, which was a good thing in some of the gyms we visited. :) Kept me warm. They still have them. The third was made in squares then connected.

Tommy, I loved your website. This is a dumb question, I'm sure, but how can they tell they're meteorites and not earth rocks?

The library I work at recently started a knitting group, and boy oh boy what a talented group of women I've met. The knitting, crocheting, needlework and sewing skills, not to mention other craft skills (especially some of the jewelery-making skills) that those women possess makes my head spin - and makes me feel decidedly untalented!

My mom sewed, knit, crocheted, did crewel work - and I can barely sew on a button.

I took out a beautiful book on counted cross-stitch a few weeks back, certain I would try my hand at it. But as usual, no time. Sigh. I need to clone myself, or learn how to live without sleep, so I can have more hours.

Either that or get rid of my kids!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

There's a new aerobic knitting exercise program. It's called Tie Knots.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

LOL, Victor......no boredom in retirement for me! There's always something I enjoy doing.

Tommy - your meteorite hobby is fascinating. I second Harper's question....

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Oh, Jan. You just reminded me that my weekend project is to sew a new cover on my down comforter. I've made so many repairs to it already. More holes keep showing up. Feathery down fluffs out in my face, up my nose while I sleep. Fabric is expensive, but I found two top sheets in my closet that I never use. I'm going to sew one on each side of the comforter and re-do all the quilting lines, etc. If the top sheets aren't large enough, I'll piece together scrap fabric for the remaining spots. It will be covered by a duvet in the end, but I still want it to look nice. (gulp). Wish me luck!

Good luck, Harper!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Way to go, Harper. Love the reuse of the sheets. Good luck!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Thanks! I'm gonna need it.

Visiting Botanic Gardens. I have been to Devonian Gardens in Calgary. Longwood, Huntington, Norfolk, Fairchild, Franklin Park Conservatory, New York Botanic, Brooklyn, Queens, Sonnenberg, Jardin Botanique in Montreal, Duke, Tower Hill, Arnold Arboretum, Crosby Arboretum, Bellingrath, the National Botanic garden and arboretum, the list goes on.
I collect teapots, I play the violin, still a beginner though, and the piano. I do cross stitching and I read. Real Books, though I am experimenting with books on the computer. I love book stores, old and new, I love to shop at all the book sites on line. I volunteer at our local library which is having a budget crisis so i go twice a week and do worker bee chores, including caring for their 7 plants. In the summer, I like to go to yard sales. This is all time permitting, of course. The botanic gardens are usually combined with vacations and I have seen my share of aviation museums too, as this is my big spousal compromise. He looks at plants while I look at airplanes.
I like History Detectives, What not to wear, Paula Deen's cooking shows {Give me that butter!!} and the Ace of Cakes. I also watch various Mystery and Masterpiece theater programs as they amuse me.
I raised two children amongst all of this!
A pic from the NYBG two summers ago.

My husband designs aircraft engine parts and will happily quote you the odds that you will die in a plane crash vs being killed in a car accident. The airplane accidents are more spectacular, but rarer.

Martha I started to collect tea pots also.

Also pick up the book "Rocks from space" by Norton.

Thomaston, CT

Digger--our library offered knitting lessons for free---about 35 women showed up the first week---then it got down to a more manageable 15-20. They ran the program for 6 weeks---I'm trying to convince them to run part 2---I know how to knit scarfs & hats--now I'd like to make sweaters for the GKids. Tommy---we have an active RC plane group that has a runway behind the Thomaston Dam---we can hear the whine all summer!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Digger - I think that I go to your library every weekend! It is the one near Trader Joe's? (My favorite grocery store in the universe!)

I tried hang gliding once. It was a birthday present to myself. The minute we got airborne - I wanted to go back down. I have never been so sick in my life. There were black spots in front of my eyes and I sat on the landing strip and wouldn't move for an hour after we landed. (You fly with a FAA liscensed instructor.) I also didn't fly in a plane for 10 years after that! My claim to fame is that I was the instructor's only student who got hurt in the parking lot! I just run like a girl - what can I say? The really good part of the whole thing is that the people at work realized, once and for all, that I truely was crazy and gave me more respect - or at least a wider berth - after that.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

planes are safer than driving - i fly all the time for work - bring a book and relax.

saw the sky diving conversation late - i would never do this myself - although a friend at work is a professional sky diver - he did the jump over ground zero with the flags on 9/11 - he was the lead with the largest flag - he also has jumped into football stadiums and a bunch of other special events - when he re-tells the jump this past 9/11 it is hard not to get choked up. the jump was timed with the first plane hit - the city was quite - then it exploded with noise when they were spotted - boats were blowing their horns and doing Huey's in the river - he sent me a link to the group's web site if anyone is interested.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Digger & Victor, Have you been to the Emergency Room (Department) lately? I think you'll find it is called an ED these days. (As in we are much more than a room, we are a dept of emergency medicine) I missed the memo too but both in New Haven and the one in Middletown changed.

Sherrie, I drive to books on CDs not an MP3. Wouldn't do that.T the MP# would be for weeding.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Tommy, that's fascinating! I read the whole page and bookmarked it. I answered the quiz wrong, though. Now I'll never look at rocks the same way again.

Cat, you're funny.

Bill, I'm interested in seeing your friend's website.

Harper

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Tom - is that by Ed Norton?? That would explain Jackie Gleason's face on the moon. Dave - the 'department' has been called the emergency department for a long time, but no one around here says they went to the ED. Could be a regional thing. (They may suffer from ED though.)

I always said I would love to try hang gliding, regular gliding or an ultra-light, but I would probably chicken out. Never been in a chopper either.

I'm interested too, Bill. I am very 'connected' to 9/11, knowing some victims and many rescue workers. Thanks.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Here is the link to the sky diving 9/11 event i told you about.

My co-worker is Travis Donley who is interviewed here somewhere.

Thanks much, Bill.
That was a good thing to reflect on this morning over coffee.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Wow, Bill that was awesome, thanks for sharing.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - great, Bill. Thank you.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I am a composer and music theory teacher to kids; I guess it's a hobby since it's not paying (yet).

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It might yet, Carrie.

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

Victor,
No it's not by Ed...it would take too long for him to write it! With all the hand motions and all! LOL! Jackie would say "WILL YOU COME ON!"

Rest their souls!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Tommy,

Fascinating info and photos about the skydivers over WTC.

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

Yankee, no, my library is in Shelton, not Fairfield. If you are ever in the area make sure you stop in!

Kudos to you for trying hang gliding! Even though it wasn't your thing, I commend you for trying. Like Victor, I would definitely chicken out!

Robindog, our knitting group has whittled down a bit from the beginning also, but it kind of goes in cycles. It's an on-going group, so if people want to go they just show up on that day. Our former assistant director knitted and she is the one that started the group, and so we have a pretty nice selection of really good knitting books. You know, the kind that you look through and then you want to go by tons of yarn and needles and knit every article of clothing you wear!

I gotta say this is the first time I've ever heard the ER called an emergency department. Granted, I haven't been in one in quite a long time (thankfully), although I still hear it referred to as an ER. It's more convenient (and usually quicker) to go to the "walk-in"

Hey! What am I saying? I was in the "ER" three years ago, when they thought I had meningitis. What a horrible experience. Sitting there waiting for 6 hours in pain was way worse than the pain itself. But yes, it was an ER back then at least. :)

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

That would be something to see, Victor! If you ever go to your kid's recital and find the music is by Tchaikovsky (or Beethoven or Schubert or Stravinsky), arranged for clarinet (or piano or violin or snare drum) by Falmont Music Limited, instead of Hal Hopson, that'll be us.

Sherrie, I'm the same way with horses! They look beautiful from a distance but when they get close I think about those TEETH and my arm starts to hurt! I was bitten by a horse as a kid and it made a deep impression.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Dee - Fairfield Woods library has a knitting group, too. I used to try and knit but I knit "backwards" because I am left handed. All the directions would have to be reversed for me to make anything other than a pot holder or scarf. But I have found beautiful yarns at Estate Sales and bought them then sold them on eBay. eBay has gotten so expensive to use that I will just list them in Dave's Marketplace in the arts and crafts section and then someone can get a good bargain and I can get my money back and a little more. At this point the yield is better than the stock market! LOL
