Bill with your workouts and sports, no wonder you can build rock walls with no help.
What are your non-gardening hobbies?
Love watching college basketball, Mets, HGTV, & the Food Channel---that's about it for TV. I paint with watercolors (but NOT with JoAnn's talent), crochet, started to knit recently, love to walk, especially on the Appy Trail in CT, have been a birdwatcher for at least 35 years, have been a mystery reader forever, caretaker of 2 rowdy dogs. I used to love scrabble & gin rummy, but since the friends we played with moved to FL, I only play when we're in FL or they're here visiting. I also belong to a writing group that meets weekly, & I babysit---a lot!
thx sherri - those walls are also exercise
Forgot to say - beautiful painting, Jo Ann! Allison - did you ride competitively? And do you sing in a group or choir?
Victor, I swear you read my mind I was going to start this same thread, but then couldn't remember my idea...lol
Allison, I LOVE that new show "Lie to Me"
Hobbies....taking care of a 6 yr old and a 2 yr old...is that a hobby or a neccessity?
Love to read mystery and mystery romance....TV CSI the original, the bachelor(I know totally corny), Hells Kitchen and Kitchen NIghmares, Dancing with the Stars, I don't have cable so I watch HGTV on line when they update the episodes....I love interior decorating and very interested in real estate...I want to be a stager(wanted to be one before people even knew what a stager was) when I don't have to do any work for our HVAC biz in a few years. motorcycling, but with the 2 kids haven't had the time.
Reading, watching sports on TV(drives DH crazy poor man) hybridizing the smaller bearded irises. That envolves thinking over the winter & ignoring thoughts in the spring. Bird watching. We formerly raised cocker spaniels & took in horse shows when the girls rode.
gotta love wiki... this is the link for barrel racing
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrel_racing
and yes I competed for 4 years Victor... you got me looking at some old videos I have on disk... made me a bit weepy eyed .... I used to sing in choir and chorus... mess around with a friends band once in a while... I can say I don't think I would win on american idol ..... but do pretty good at a karaoke bar
I like to ski. It's the only way to get through winter.
Biking, golfing.
The past 2 summers I've collected Monarch eggs and caterpillars and watched them grow.
I make all my greeting cards. I do oil painting but haven't picked up a brush for a few years.
Travel.
Onewish did you ever get to the Calgary Stampede? Barrel racing is a big event at the Rodeo.
no... never got to travel that far.... had to buy this stupid house
;)
i tried to uplodad a piece of my video to picassa... don't think it worked though
give it a try

OMG you are awesome!!!! LOL now my DH thinks I've really lost it cuz I'm been sitting here yelling my head off cheering you on. GREAT video!!!!
Cool!
:)
here is the next piece

Thanks for those links, onewish! That's awesome. I am terrified of horses (I think it has to do with my fear of heights, and being on a horse is just too high up for me!) so when I see people ride like that, and make it look so easy, I'm really in awe of them. Great stuff!
and the last one
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ITH4uAomXceV4gdJcLxevA?feat=directlink
if I find my 2002 one... we totally crashed at that VA one (bad ground).... real bad... but to lighten the mood I put sound effects to it.. car crash and a few others... makes me laugh every time... after I forgot about the pain
DD... I really loved it... the partnership between us was amazing... I went to visit him with the new owner.. and had to leave because I couldn't stop crying
So cool!!!!
Forgot to mention hubby is really into trying different beers, right now he's into 'hacker-pschorr'.....we tried a micro brewery beer from Maine(I think) that was blueberry flavored..yummm
Onewish, I think you hit the nail on the head - the partnership. That's probably another reason I'm so afraid of riding. The horse is so big, and I have to put my trust in him or her. Being a city girl and not being raised around animals, to me that's a hard thing to do. The one or two times I've been on a horse, it was a horse that I didn't "know". Perhaps if I were serious about riding and really got to know the horse, it'd be easier to put my trust in her.
Funny thing watching your videos. I don't ride, but I do skate (although I don't skate nearly as well as you ride, lol) and I have played a very tiny bit of hockey. Anyway, while watching your videos I found that I was really noticing the angle of the horse to the ground as you went around the barrels, and I realized I was thinking in terms of skating. When you do skating drills, you work on your edges, and you do this by skating around an object in a circle. The greater the angle you have (the lower down you lean toward the ice) the better your edges. My edges basically suck, lol, but I've been fascinated by watching lots of very good skaters lean so far in you wonder how they stay up. I found myself thinking the same thing with your horse - how does he stay up?
If you do show the "crash" video, I will probably never get on a horse again!
I am in awe! In case anyone isn't familar with barrel racing onewish times were equal to qualifying times of competitors going to state, national and international rodeos. SELL THE HOUSE! (totally just kiddin ^_^) Also just a note (because it kept me from even thinking about going into professional golf) it wasn't until quite recently that the purses for barrel racing came even close to the purses for other events at rodeos and of course their expenses were the same and sometimes more because alot of the other events (steers, bareback broncs, saddle broncs) are using local stock whereas the barrel racers have to pay to transport their own stock. I just luv it now that the babes walk off with equally large cheques!!! ok I will now step down off my soapbox. Thanks so much for sharing that with us onewish!!
I forgot to mention bulls are local stock too. When I first moved here I was thinking 'Babes on Bulls'. EEK! . DiggerDee I was born and raised in urban Toronto area. Now that I live in ranch country for the most part I just talk to them and feed them apples. I'm not afraid of them but every time I've been in a saddle the horse just turns and looks at me as if to say 'You're kiddin. Right?' Horses are very smart ^_^
DD... you don't get more city than were I grew up.... but my friend always had horses and I fell in love... the only reason we crashed was the ground was real deep and soft... and we hit a rut that was put there by the riders before me.. I only barrel raced for 6 years... and rode for 8... with time that horse and I could have been pro... he was good.. I didn't even put a dent into his full power at my skill level... only acted up once a year and then he was done... but going to the ohio show... man that place was nuts... a full week we were there.. and they have three arenas going at once from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm... thousands of horses, people, vehicles, huge cherry pickers plenty of opportunity for a horse to flip out... and he would go into reverse mode.. shut every thing off... i would have to drag him around cause he was walking too slow... (called him eeyore on those days:::doesn't matter anyway:::) he was more behaved than all my trainers horses... he truly is amazing
DD yes it is the same concept as skating or motor cross... have to have his weight and mine in the right spots... go in at the wrong angle and wipe out... I have some photos where my inside foot in the stirrup is mere inches from the ground.. the slow mo's are the coolest
DN... the problem was if I went to a show.. now you got a full weekend - take friday off work... hook up the trailer.. fuel up.. drive to gods country.. gotta pack food for 4 days because it would kill you eating out every meal... pack food for him... bedding for him... carry extra water if we broke down somewhere... pay $100 or more for entry fee... and IF i was lucky that day... i would win a check to pay for my trip.... take off monday because we got back so late sunday night.. it would be a park the truck.. unload the horse... start drinking a beer and fall asleep 1/2 way through it.. sometimes in my recliner folding chair outside
and do it all again a few weeks later... exhausted just thinking about it... but I hate to say it... I loved living in my trailer
LOL DN... glad there is someone on here who understands... makes me nuts when I hear... what's so hard about it.. your just sitting there
I like the beer part.
Tee hee Victor me too ^_^ There are no 'riding stables' ie you can't just go 'heh let's go ride horses'. Tons of places to learn how to ride of course. There are lots of pony places for the seedlings too. If an adult wants to ride it's pricey, you learn people safety on horseback and you learn horse etiquette (for lack of a better word) before you can ride ie. no sawing/yanking on the reins, no kicking them in the ribs for a 'giddy up' etc. etc. There are incredible trail rides through the foothills and the mountains on older gentle horses. LOL I should get a provincial kick back for my PR work.
Allison, did you ever come down to Cowtown in south Jersey. Supposedly the biggest rodeo east of the Mississippi? If you did, you were only about 7 miles from me.
Growing up, I did 4-H with horses. My uncle who lived in Lafayette lent me ponies, then horses as I got older and bigger. I would set up barrels in the pasture, just for fun. Yes, it's not easy. I loved living on the farm as a girl. The trails were great to ride.
Great job!!
been there many times..(not riding)... always got a kick out the bull riders getting the crud kicked out of them... I heard the ground there was like riding on concrete so I never brought him there... loved shopping across the street too...but I did do a show a few mins away from there... can't remember the town name at the moment.. but it was a huge farm Sunrise Ranch.... and the owners were great...
funny I don't mind riding a horse doing 30 miles an hour in small circles.... but put me on a trail and I was not relaxed at all... the only reason I did it.. because he loved doing that... if I took him for a trail ride a few days before a show.. he would be all relaxed the day of... unless it was the rambo trail (as my trainer called it) at the one barn we were at... in long valley... it was an old logging trail... boy o boy nothing like being in horse chest deep water navigating around trees laying down under the water and floating... while ducking under tree limbs... not fun
and Victor we had a few husbands who came to root the wives ... cheering and drinking!... when we went to this place out in PA for the 4th of July... it was a total party weekend... no pressure.. my wacky buddies set their trailer up and mine with the awnings facing each other... big patio... put tikki torches and pink flamingos all around and bud beer can string lights up on the trailers... and a baby pool for us to sit in when it got too hot... (and to keep the beer cold) brought there own full size BBQ grill...and just partied most of the weekend....LOL... they ended up doing a clam bake the first night and a pig roast the second night... you had to see all the snooty horse people looking at us like we were nuts.. the first night we were there it was over 100 degrees they didn't have hook ups for our trailers... no air that night or sleep.. (after that I bought a generator) it was so stinkin hot i drank a six pack in about an hour.. didn't get drunk.. sweated it all out.. and since you guys won't know this.. I can get drunk off a few normally
but we had the best weekend ... good friends and my horse... doesn't get much better... if any of you recall my friend who killed himself not too long ago.. that was him... he was nuts but always made me laugh... not to bring this conversation down or anything... I miss him but at peace with it... no need for any sorry postings... but we all were like a big family of gypsies traveling around together... I hooked up with the right group that's for sure
Allison - I read your posts several times & enjoy how you tell the stories.
I could just see you and your buds having a great time!
Now I'll go watch the video portion...=:0)
Allison, that is totally awesome!!! Horses are my all time favorite creatures. I've had a handful of opportunities to get near one, and it's always a very powerful experience. So cool!! I wish I could be near horses every day, even have a relationship with one or two.

Oh yeah. My hobbies. I like creating things, putting things together. Usually my house has a need and that's what gets done first. Fix the toilet. Hang these shelves. Sew curtains. Hang a wall of photos, paint the deck, the stairwell... Lately I've been trying to push myself to make a drawing or painting to serve no purpose other than to hang on the wall. I've done a few watercolors so far and have doodled in a coloring book (for big kids). I'm planning on making a "Home Sweet Home" embroidery from an old fashioned pattern. The house has a never-ending list of needs, though.
I watch some TV shows occasionally on my computer. Heroes, Lost, Grey's Anatomy, HGTV shows. I follow the news and politics more than I should. They make me worry.

Thanks for the rose.
I'm going to try roses,DD is really the expert here but doesnt garden as much as I do.
guess when you enjoy something so much.. even in text it shows... happy to share that
Allison....flying lead changes!!
I loved dressage, but alas, horse ownership has become too expensive.
Onewish--That is awesome
GE- Same to you
If hobbies are things you enjoy, exercise would never make my list. what I like doing is pretty boring.
reading, which has given way more & more to audio books
doing stuff as a family
TV: Daily Show, Cobert Report, Office, recently discovered Monk
Games Magazine especially cryptic crosswords
Plays & Movies when I can
Oh, And I think I've mentioned a few times..Uconn basketball & Yankee baseball
Movies at home and at the local cineplex. Cooking...love to cook, and bake. Reading, mostly sci fi, although I tend to mix it up now and then. Listening to music, no one genre in particular. When the weather is nice, like to walk the dogs...although if you walk a Pug for too long, our Pug tends to lie down, throw us the paw, and we end up carrying her. I like to shop...from the mundane to the grand. I like to help others out with their gardens, especially new gardens that haven't even been planted yet! We also enjoy musical theater (when we get to go). We both like to watch TV, especially Fringe, Lost, Desperate Housewives, and Heroes. If we aren't watching that, Bravo, History Channel or Animal Planet is on...if I'm not watching, Paul is a huge news hound!

Dave great hobbies exept for that last one!
truck day in Red Sox nation is today - come over to the right side!
Busy people! Loved the horse experience, Allison, but riding when I was a child---and felt the ground once too often, I didn't get near a horse until a friend bought 2 Morgans & trained them to carriage---I rode with him a few times, but it was pretty hairy. Deb---wish I could still ski---and golf, & tennis--but since the broken hip, walking is about it. Thom, don't forget travel---I enjoyed your botanical trip last summer.
Dave, do you listen to audiobooks at home or just in the car? Does your library let you download them?
funny how a flying lead change to a barrel horse is just natural... the first time I felt it... oh boy.. I was freaked out... I will never forget the feeling of my first cantor either.. remember it like it was yesterday
