What are your non-gardening hobbies?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Not sure if we've done this before, but we have so many new people that it's probably a good topic anyway.

I'm into working out, hiking, photography and investing (aka, losing money.) I don't watch much tv, except for sports. When I do, it's usually Discover, History, or Science Channel. Only go to the movies with my kids. We do rent dvd's. Love music, though I would not really consider that a hobby. I'll probably think of more.

How about you?

North Augusta, ON

Those are the only channels I watch too. I enjoy knitting and crochet as well as reading. When I go to the library I come home with 10 books...might do me a week and a half. My house plants too...do they qualify as gardening or as a hobby?

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I am a cat servant. I used to make jewelry from stone beads and even sew quilts. Now I am at the beck and call of the cats. I watch the food channel and HGTV and some of the popular shows. I listen to books while I drive so I get a book a week done on the average.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have gotten away from reading and wish I could get back.

North Augusta, ON

oh...and the computer!! What an awesome invention, wish I'd found it sooner.

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

logic puzzles via internet (conceptispuzzles.com)
data nerdiness (freebase.com)
xbox (some role playing, some strategy, very little shoot em up)
jigsaw puzzles
birds
reading when I feel like it (scifi novels and non-super hero comic books)

North Augusta, ON

Jigsaw puzzles! Good one, have you seen these yet? They're quite addictive, I do them on hard.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh yeah - role playing. But I don't have any video games. Freebase? That used to mean something else - Richard Pryor's hobby.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Poor Richard - don't pick on him. :)

Cross-stitching, reading, helping DH make frames, DG (of course). TV - DIY, HGTV, History, Fav. shows - Jeopardy, Antiques Roadshow, NCIS, Bones,

This summer it will be Kitchen renovating

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What kind of frames, Jan?

North Augusta, ON

OMG!! I've been framed, I tell ya, framed!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Picture frames.

Good one, LeeAnne :)

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

hobby - a leisure activity that a person does regularly for pleasure Oxford Dictionary Of Current English

sorry, there's no way that the way I garden falls into a 'leisure activity'. I do knit, I read (fantasy, history, um, fantasy). My quilted pieces and photos are for sale, so I don't think they qualify. We do one jigsaw puzzle a year, more or less. This year it's a 2000 piece puzzle of Van Gogh's "Starry Night" I got the moon together before we had to gather it up off the dining room table for a party and then taxes took over the table, maybe next month.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Extreme gardening, Kathleen?!

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

I love the show Bones! I do watch a bit of TV, sorry I left that off. Lots of science fiction, and some non-scifi like Bones and The Closer where it has a great ensemble (Psych too...can't think of what else...oh well).

oh, and the role playing xbox games aren't really role-playing. not sure why I typed that. probably because I can't remember what they call them. hee hee. I can blame my crappy memory on my meds, right...right?? (and I'm not even 40...boy am I in trouble! lol)

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

During gardening-appropriate months, I am the staff of 1.
Otherwise, I spend time daily working out (so I can continue to perform the duties of "Staff").
I still do a fair amount of custom design & sewing, and cater to my dogs, kinda sorta.
A reader - no TV: hate commercials & laugh tracks. Son is 19, so no more cartoon movies!
LOL - During the winter I do OCD gardening in my head.

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

There are hobbies other than gardening?

I love long walks/hikes, photography, reading, computers. However, these days I don't have much time for hobbies so gardening wins every time. In the winter, sad to say, I work way too much.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Painting to keep from going crazy. See the altest below. Done from a photo of Pollyk's siberian iris.
Planned the garden for 2009 ,which will all go out the window when planting is actually required.
I watch movies ,have a subscription to Netflix.

well it depends on what year it is... to what hobbies i have done... photography, singing and gardening have been my longest running... now I think I can add cooking to that list.... always experimenting with something in the kitchen (like gardening .. I didn't know how to cook before I bought this house) ... I think it's safe to say bird watching is on that list now too

years ago... motorcycles, horses and barrel racing (which I wish I could still afford), jewelry making which went along with gem collecting, crafts like making christmas ornaments (that one still comes and goes)... I used to be big on video games.. but now only once in a while you can see me messing around on my playstation2... lately guitar hero got me

I have realized it must be my gemini nature must cause me to change hobbies every few years

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh my favorite tv shows... other than food network and hgtv... my prime time shows are fringe and the new one lie to me

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Onewish Dont you see more Home projects on the HG channel?
I gave up trying to get garden advise, mostly can find it on weekends.

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

Wow, gorgeous painting! I have a lot more wannabe hobbies than actual hobbies. I WANT to paint, sing, play an instrument, either knit, crochet or sew, and I wish had some kind of crafting talent. Sadly, I can do none. Either lack of talent or lack of time prohibits me.

I do read - well, if a few paragraphs while trying to keep from falling asleep face-first in the book in bed at night qualifies as reading, lol! Piles of books around the house waiting to be read. And I work in a library, which is often more of a curse than a blessing to a wannabe avid reader, lol.

I love jigsaw puzzles, and have one of those felt roll-up things so I don't monopolize the dining room table. Dreaming of the day my basement renovation is done solely so I can actually leave a puzzle on the table down there and not have to move it!

Only TV is NY Rangers hockey games and a few soaps, just enough to keep up on the story line.

Gee, I guess I'm boring. That's pretty much all I do. The rest of my time is spent on jobs, kids, hockey practice and games, and as an absolute last resort, household chores.

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

Oops, I was slowly typing while everyone was posting! Onewish, what is barrel racing? For some reason visions of Niagara Falls popped into my mind....

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

lol, yes, extreme gardening. We inherited several generations of gardens when we bought the farm. Not our family, but someones family. Unfortunately, the only person who had a clue as to the history of the plants died before I had a chance to talk with her, so it's been dig and delve to find out what I have. There are 23 varieties of old garden roses to start with and lots of medicinal herbs running riot through a half a century's worth of raspberry mess. Last year, I hired a farm girl to help me and this year, I'll have another. After living here for 15 years I think it's time to get it in some kind of order.

e-b, I also like the ensemble cast shows, and they seem to be doing a better job at it than in the past when it was all about one 'star'.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

My animals keep me busy: two saanen goats(a buck & doe), 3 ewes(don't know the breed, they were given to us about a month ago), one pekin duck and 18 chickens as of today. We are getting 6 broad breasted turkeys and 6 cuckoo maran chicks(they lay the chocolate brown eggs) in about 2 weeks.
Other enjoyments are taking a nice walk in the woods, watching the birds, playing cards and a movie buff. And ok, I'll confess! Thanks to the DVR I watch the soaps at night! Love hgtv and diy, too.

Sue ☺

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Kathleen you must have the most fascinating gardens! I'm glad that you are cherishing them. On our farm, before we moved down here, my DB didn't really have any interest in those things and he cut down old apple trees, pear trees, roses and a beautiful 70 year old mulberry tree. So it warms my heart when I hear someone who really appreciates those plants and trees. ☺

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

The woman we bought the place from (after renting it for 22 years - just plain stubborn) told Stan that he wasn't to mow below the driveway or in the side yard until I'd figured out what I had. We did mow down below the drive last summer - it had just gotten too frustrating to deal with it after 15 years, but I think it will give an easier time this year to see what's really there. I found an antique grape hyacinth 4 years ago and some autumn crocus last year. There are roses and peonies that haven't seen the sun for the golden rod for a couple of generations. I tell Stan it keeps me out of the pool halls - a hobby I would enjoy if there were actually any pool halls around! lol

Billards - 35+ years
Antique Auctions
Sci Fi / Horror Movies.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

lol!
Those plants must have been happy to see the sun! And I bet your hayfever was alleviated as well.

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

Theater (performance and writing) and music (composing for concert band).

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

"planned the garden for 2009, which will all go out the window, when planting is required" I think that is a classic quote. I was laughing so hard. I think we can all relate.
BTW, JoAnn, beautiful painting.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Writing (gardening/humour), Reading, Golf, Cooking. Since I spend most of my free time on garden related activities I'm pretty limited for time

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

other hobbies? i'm a very competitive person - i will play almost any sport if given the opportunity - on a regular basis it use to be softball. tennis, volleyball, hockey and golf. now it is softball, volleyball, horseshoes and the occasional round of golf and racquetball

i work out almost everyday either jogging or elliptical, in the mornings after coffee (use to be when i rolled out of bed) its 50 push ups and a quick few sets of dumb bell weights.

I also use to downhill ski till i remarried and then i learned my wife only snow plowed on the bunny trails - so it was no more bump runs for me (not a great skier just liked the action) so now it's X-country skiing. i have also cross stitched (famine side) several years back and made some nice x-mass villages and a large x-mass train.

if i see a cool rock(s) it comes home with me. (victor did you see those cool hanging rock sculptures on that jm site)

try and go camping a few time a summer and do some hard core backpack (ranger says its my yearly death march) camping/hiking at least once a summer at baxter state park.
there is kayaking and canoeing.
when i am done (or during) i have drink beer that i brew at a local brew establishment - and "maybe" one of the reasons for being active to beat the battle of the beer bulge. And will enjoy a good heavy red wine as well.
RedSox, Celts, Bruins, and Dallas Cowboys

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, I did. Real cool. I love rocks, geology, etc., too. I forgot alcohol! I prefer red wines, but also like beer. Like to try different ones. On a Sam Adams kick now.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

My dad liked Sam Adams.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

had to supplement sammy when i ran out before the last batch was ready to bottle - i tried the honey porter - nice.
trying to lose the scottish ale i made before the holidays - great taste, 9.5% alchohol (one bottle only), heavy calories/like drinking a loaf of bread - only brew one in a blue moon
just made an esb and irish ale and swapped one box of my magnum esb (darker/more malt) with my buddies glacier esb (sweeter slightly lighter) we stick to the German/Brit/Irish for the most part.
incredibrew.com - hundreds of recipes

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's cool, Bill. Is it lots of work? How long is the entire process?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

not a lot of work - i use to do it a home - that was a lot of work - this takes 2 weeks from brewing to bottling. takes about 2 hours to brew - if your a novice they practically hold your hand. just follow the recipe and they have timers at each station for the brewing cycles. you also "taste" some sample others have brewed from the refridge there. We have gone off recipe with several of the beers that we believe improve them.

2 weeks later your ready to bottle - this also takes about 2 hours - and you "taste" your own and shoot the crap - place smells fantastic!

you end up with a minimum 6 cases of 12 bottle/22 oz. cases. and you usually get about 6 bottles over that - we refer to those as "extras".
The 22 oz. bottles you buy there .75 a bottle and you need to keep these clean for the beer. I bleach everyone before bringing them in. sam sells singles same height that are 24oz which i have found in 12 bottle cases that i was forced to empty to supplement the bottle supply

they also have wine making - went to a tasting once and was not impressed although all of the bottles were only a few months old - to easy to grab good $10/$15 bottles

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Jan
Anything to keep busy and get my mind off the weather.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

JoAnn is the 'hole' closed up? How's the reno going? I'm VERY interested, since this will be me in a few months.
