Best/Worse &What did I learnt today/Chat with Friends #83
Good morning Betty. Love the rag quilt. It is so pretty, and I know when she walks in and see's it, she will love it too.
Great job.
LK
Nice quilt! Very pretty! Well I'm the only one answering phones today so I'll talk at ya'll later!
Just after my last post Suzanne called to tell me she has that intestinal flu and couldn't come in..drats..if that Paul is passing around the flu like he did the cold I'll not be happy!
Groundhog day today..guess it's 6 more weeks of winter..surprise/surprise.. still Wyarton Willie to give his opinion but am sure it will be much the same...BUT good news was sun was shinning as I drove in..OMG no sooner did I leave did I arrive..lol..some of you will scratch your head at that description but truly, usually it's a 1 12/ to 1 3/4 hr drive to Toronto..now 40 minutes later I'm here and on a sunny day nothing better than a drive...
Darlene did call..said she just loves the rag quilt..now tell me, why is it everytime you do something for someone they say, 'but you should not have done this'...why not a simple, 'thank you - it's much appreciate' know I didn't have to .. just wanted to...one of my peeves is that type of comment...
Have to go in search of news on Shar??? Even if she had a generator it wouldn't do for weeks/weeks without hydro..I'm sure those units are at a premium with so many without hydro...
Darlene and Mike just bought a generator to do their entire house, when hydro goes out the generator that is hooked up to make electrical panel comes on... she mentioned the other generator they had would not be used, must ask her if they are still willing to sell...not that my hydro goes out very much or for any length of time but sure want to have one JUST in case...
Paul is in the Toronto office today so now that I've made myself comfy in the chair I'm getting out the project I'm doing for Shar..lovely wooden photo album in memory of Aunt Bett stories...I'll not ship before I know she's home..on Saturday I got a pressie in the mail..jumping up and down because I'm in a few swaps...made it home before opening and when I did it was a beautiful antique santa ornament...hmmmm someone must have the same taste as I..I had mailed from another msn group I belonged to an ornament exactly the same....hello / wakie/wakie...yep person I sent it to did not pick it up at the post office after 3 notifications so it was returned to me....disappointed I was, not mine...lol...infact Elaine e-mailed me to apologize...no need, needs a new box now that I ripped the old one in shreds...will send it back to her...shaking my head...because I was so excited I think I'll keep this one and send her another...lol
good morning.

Dawn I had to laugh at your post about there being no refuge from freezing. That is exactly how I feel about the heat. I love winter and always figure that if I'm too cold I can bundle up more. However, there are only so many layers one can remove if it gets too hot. I guess you get used to whatever your climate is though.
Well, I'm posting from our brand new computer. Last year Keith took a course to improve his qualifications (and pay). His reward for completing the course was the promise of getting a Mac. Last week we ordered it. We received it on Thursday but waited until Saturday after the party to set it up. I knew that if we set it up before the party then there's no way we would have gotten the preparations done. I must say that I'm really enjoying it so far. Our other computer was getting so slow so this is a real treat. Plus it's so nice to not have tons of cords cluttering things up.
Being inspired by Betty, I think I'm going to make some rag quilts. I've collected a fair sized stash of jeans and other clothing that I had been planning on using for a crazy quilt but I think the rag quilt will be a lot faster (and thus, more likely that I will get it done). I think it may even work as a mother-daughter project. Sonora will be so excited.
Good Morning!!
Liz, dont you just love this weather we are having?!
Yes, my stone patio is completed. right now it looks like a mud patch....I piled on extra soil and then soaked it really good last night and need to go hose off the extra mud today. then will take a pix to post here. decided to plant the lemon thyme in between the stones, so will be transplanting that this afternoon.
Woodspirit, I have a similar experience with my daughters best friend in grade school. mom and dad were no were to be found, so she was living with 88 yo grandma. she spent all of the holidays and weekends at my house for 2 years. Then one day I just asked her if she wanted to stay....she just started crying, said she thought it was a fairy tale! lol! I 'adopted' both her and her grandma. She had missed 1st thru 3rd grade and was really behind in school. I met her when she was in 5th grade. and she came to live with us at the end of 6th grade. I fostered her until she graduated high school. What a gift from God! I received the joy of watching her catch up in school, and change her grades from d's to A's with just a little encouragement. I too thought it may be too late for me to help her, she was so down on herself, with absolutely no self esteem.... (with parents and a brother and sis who abandoned you....who would have self esteem?!) She is now beautiful 21 yo college student and doing wonderful. The real gift I receive was absolute thankfullness everytime I did something for her, or took her on a new adventure. I just kept telling her over and over again that she was lovable, and that I loved her. Had to convince her that parent love kids because they are their own, I loved her cause she was wonderful. I think that finally got thru to her! LOL! so....you still can make a wonderful difference in that lil girls life. even at 33 yo....maybe she just never learned to love herself, and that she is lovable.
I did get to see my son last night. visit was a little difficult as he is still having delusions and hallucinations :( but hoping this new med will help him. just takes time to get it in his system.
okay, off to the fabric store.....I keep forgetting I owe a wonderfully patient trade partner some fabric! lol!
have a great day all!
anjL
anjl, YES! lol feels like spring makes me want to plant but if we dont get rain omg are we going to be in trouble with high water hikes, now was it you that orders off that magazine collections? i saw a bottle tree holder that is back ordered till 2/6 might have to get one lol my neighbors are going to think i lost it! but thats ok its all about yard art lol.
Has any ever strung mini Christmas lights inside those bottle trees, Liz? I've seen it done with baby jar prymid Christmas trees. Just wondered if you could do the same with bottles on the bottle tree.
That sounds pretty, let us know what it looks like if you try.
LK
One of my youngest daughter's friends stayed with us for a long time while in school. Her mother's bf was trying to molest her and her mother didn't believe her! When the girl got married, she wanted me to make her wedding dress. I got about half way through it and had to quit. I was not doing very well. myself. I saw her a few years back with her child. She remembered me, but I didn't reckonize her. I don't think she'll ever forget being able to get away from all that!
Liz, nice to see you posting, can tell you are back to your chipper self..full of mischief...primroses..drats only primroses I'll find up here are in a magazine...which I have four sitting on my desk..drooling over the garden designs and flowers...for a day off you've much on your plate...prayers for FIL...is DH still enjoying the new job...after his experience in the alley I thought he might have given up...
Jillian, you brought a smile when you said you love winter..omg you live in the right area for winter..lol...mind you, we've much the same..I don't mind it but when it's almost 5 months long, bit much...Amen to the new computer...you are lucky Keith leaves it at home for you to use...the quilts certainly would be a good way to pass the remainder of the winter...Sonora would love it I'm sure..and yes something that she'd be quite capable of doing along side of you..it's especially great as no quilting is needed...do you get another winter break Jillian, more towards March..any decision made to move a little south for next school year..know you were both contemplating such a move..you've so many friends up there I imagine it would be difficult to make such a move...kids are getting older though, would be nice to see family and friends here more often...both of you must miss HOME as well...
AnnMarie, you'll have to show us your purchased stash if you make it to the fabric store along with the photo's of patio..you visited with your son yesterday..sending prayers for DS..it must be so confusing and overwhelming for him..so many changes.....lemon thyme sounds just the thing for between the rocks..does it grow quickly??? Here's my thoughts Ann Marie, went back and looked at the patio you were doing...Jeannine and I bought the molds for the patio rocks, she accomplished much, me nope..what I ended up doing near the entrance of the secret garden was to dig holes, pour cement..worked find BUT thought if I purchased some plastic bins, bought that foam spray, spray in the corners and bottom to get a textured look then I could pour a multitude of flat rocks..not sure it would be cheaper than going to Atas Block around the corner but I'll try...want to make a pretty patio in front of our Friendship garden
Woodspirit and AnnMarie, what wonderful women to try and build up someone's self esteem...
Yard art..so laughing, on Mothers Day the boys come and spend the day with me, doing whatever projects I have in store for them without asking why and how come..lol..last year they put up the 2 metal arbors, then I wanted a fence about 8' to hide the neighbors garbage..once spring is here and trees are in bloom it's hidden, but anyway it was a project I wanted done...they both were shaking their heads so I re-enforced why I wanted it..to hide their junk so I'd only see the beauty of my yard..Jeff said 'mom, did you ever think perhaps your neighbor will be pleased that you put the fencing up so he doesn't have to look at your YARD! imagine that..lol Liz....can't wait for the big craft days so that I can find the gentleman who makes the metal art I purchase...want more pieces...maybe I should take up welding and metal art???? hmmmmm sure would save a bundle of $$$
Deborah, now wouldn't that look pretty all lit up at night..hadn't thought of that but yes you could, just have to put the bottle tree near an electrical plug..i.e. one that might be next to a pond....you just gave me more yard art ideas....OMG and still 3 months away before I can play in the garden...
Lunch time... because I'm on my own, think I'll take a run to the Re-Use it store...looking for small closet door
bbl
I guess we all have our stories and sometimes you don't even realize the impression you make on a child. We had a friend who had custody of his boys. We all spent a lot of time together and one spring we all rented a cabin at the beach for a weekend. They showed up and the boys had come down with a bug....fevers, throwing up, the whole miserable nine yards! I ran into one of the boys a few years ago. He told me that on of his good childhood memories that has stayed with him through the years "was a trip to the beach and we were really sick and you took care of us." I think dads can be great single parents.....but when you are sick Mom's just deal with it better. I still love those little boys, the baby is in his 30's now and the shortest one is 6' 4"........
I had a great Super Bowl evening! Watched the Half Time Show......my idol! Then guess what?!?!? Ended up on the phone with Judy for, I think it was about two hours!! Has been ages since I had so much fun, and spent that amount of time gabbing on the phone!! One of the things we obviously share is the same interest (lack thereof) in football!!
One swap in the mail today, one more to small project to complete and I am done with all of my swaps!!!!!!!....until the next one pops up.......would so like to avoid them for awhile as I have so many other projects I need to get out of the way....and I do not the Betty Factor (non-ending energy and organizational abilities)!!!! Oh, Betty, if only you could bottle that!!!!
Betty, glad you mentioned the metal garden art.....I can't wait until the Farmers Market starts up again. The is a man there who makes the most wonder metal garden art....this year I hope I can get several of his pieces! He has a frog leaping up to catch a bug, a beautiful heron that I would love to have for the pond area, and one of a Cat that I think Sage and Laura would love to have. I am so ready for nice weather.
Noticed that the Tulip in one of my large decorative pots is poking it's little head up, and the garlic that was left in the back bed is also poking through!! Just a little reminder that Spring IS on the way.
I could love winter if I had beautiful snow and a nice fireplace.........I loved it when we lived in Alaska. It is just that here the winter is much milder.....meaning gray and raining most of the time......I don't care for that so much. Cold with Sunshine is so much easier to tolerate!!
Trisha our Judy sure is a talker...lol...so bubbly you just want to smile...
Have a call in to my brother, the Re-Store has a new window 5'2"W x 5'8"L (new) for cheap/cheap...window I'm replace is 61" wide by 48 L but that's ok..easy to make a bigger hole...want him to come and see it and pick it up if it's suitable..sure hope it is..Bernie (brother) said as soon as it warms up he can do the patio door in the back bedroom and the window in dining room..sooner I get them all replaced the sooner I can retire...
Trisha although it's cold with the sun shinning one can feel spring..honestly..
Projects...you know you'll sign up for another swap shortly..I went over to look this morning, they have a craft one (guess supplies) going to start shortly..don't see a date but will surely have to sign up on that one..think Stacey's doing it...
Sat here for a few hours this morning working on the album I'm doing...ok, making the inside covers which are MDF to look like scrapbooking paper..stencil,stencil,stencil..then it occurred to me, why to *&&^ didn't I just glue scrapbooking paper inside..lol..shaking my head...so now I have to get ambitious and start painting some more...
You like metal art as well???
Don't have many photo's on my system here but went to look for a few pieces I have....
This sunburst with mirror inside hangs from an antique window frame that is cemented inground...
That is Beautiful! Yes, I love metal work, keep telling Bill he should make things like this instead of Bicycles......but I have to admit, his bicycles are metal art also! Will have to take some pics of the one in progress.....they are Art as bicycles go, but don't think they would do much in the garden!!!
They are all beautiful.....and that looks just like my mother in laws dogs....standard pose...throw it again, throw it again!!!
Mum needs to rund some errands so I am off for awhile... talk to ya later.
trish lol so it was you she was yapping at while her youngest was texting me
too funny!
betty love your yard so many nice peices you have collected, holy cow im ready to start a party those two brats embarrased me to no end at the vets just horrible, you would of thought they were being abused, trying to leave they spot a pit bull and get a attitude growling ect!
funny how they act up once we left all was well
deborah i thought about lights but this one is in the back yard lol my neighbors just dont get yard art but after seeing all the bottles and to string lights in each one i chickened out.
judy what are you up to?
This message was edited Feb 2, 2009 11:51 AM
Liz, dogs are no different than kids....act up when you want them to be ever so angelic..OMG Liz, can you imagine that bottle art all lit up at night...now what would your neighbors have in their yard...grass..how dull...lol
hello all
the kids got together and bought DH guitar hero world tour... its a game but u have actual instruments to play along with. drums, microphone.. guitar... goodness talk about laughing!! i havnt laughed that much in a long time....
my DS is finally making moves to move out thankfully. the room will become my craft room! yay..
sweltering here while you all freeze.....
hugs
Betty-you have to go read the note from my boss that I posted-just look for the post in italics....
Hi Laura, to bad we can combine and divide to even out the weather, a little warmer up here and a little cooler for you!!
Laura, the grandchildren have the same system, lol, don't know who uses it more though the young ones or their dads...It's so nice to see you post that you are laughing..maybe that's what you need..pretend you are a 'star' sit and play and sing...now I know you can sing because you've recorded before...back to the fundamentals of YOU Laura...oh I so wish we could trade some of our weather...however, today has been spectacular, I even stopped for a few minutes on my way home to watch the sunset starting it's evening ritual..so pretty..laughed as I neared town, was as hot as can be in the car, turn down the window and let fresh air in...
OMG Stacey..I can't even for one second think of working for someone such as she..be glad you had the courage to quit...no amount of money is worth that kind of abuse...I managed a big department for American Express, tell you what, the more you gave to employees the more you got in return from them...she sure must have missed the 'management course'..
It's early evening, see that someone was here (bet it was Kathy) and all the walkways are done .. I just might get my jacket on and make a walk of the gardens...know they are there..lol .. somewhere beneath a cover of snow...
Betty-tomorrow may just be my last day-I can't do another 7 days of this harassment...
Will be saying a prayer for you tonight Stacey..always difficult to put in the notice weeks once you've said you are leaving..probably why most companies no longer want people to complete the notice time given...you will be in my thoughts...
Stacey, you are in my prayers also.....
This 24 hours.....Worst...knowing what Stacey is having to contend with.....
Best.....that I got to talk with Judy and to know that there are still more wonderful people like Judy and Betty and all our DG Friends in the world than people like the ones Stacey is having to put up with.
Hope you all have a good night
Trisha, that is nice. Taking a deep breath and smiling.
(also, no ciggy for me tomorrow is 7 days smoke free)
Stacey if they can't lay off of you so you can finish your 2 weeks I think I would just walk, if you can afford to that is, it's not going to matter for your next job anyway, just don't use that one supervisor on a reference list, use all of the top level managers who knew you and liked you.
Stacey, at my last job my direct supervisor was a toward me and treated me no one knows why, she just didn't like me for some reason and I was one of their best workers. I put up with it because I knew I was moving some 1500 miles away anyway. When I applied for jobs here, including the one I work at now, I put the CEO, the President, the Vice President, and the Accounting Manager on my reference list, and kept her name off of it. When my boss called my references he got to talk to all of these owners and he still doesn't know I went through. Anyway, about 6 months after I left she was demoted back to Customer Service Rep and my best friend was promoted into the management position. She's hating life and still hates me to this day. Karma got that one, and I actually got to know about it!
Ok, I am apparently going to have to go to the doctor. This cramping and pooing is not getting any better, today is the 4th day. I'm now worried that it is my gallbladder since I just had my appendix removed last July. I don't have any time to take off because of that appendectomy, I'm still paying some of the bills for that appendectomy, and cannot have another surgery right now. Please pray that it's not my gallbladder but some other ailment that can be taken care of with antibiotics or a virus that will just have to run its course.
LOL Laura, why don't you come here for a week to cool off and we'll go down there for a week to warm up!
Betty I'm so glad someone is taking care of you in that snow and cold. Hows the congestion?
Yay! No ciggies for 7 days! Dave said the first 2 weeks are the hardest, you got one down already!
Deborah I am so Happy For You!!!!!! You hang in there......like I told Judy if you even think about having one you get on the phone and call me!!!!! I know you are going to make it....Grandma!!!
crissy Do get in and see the doctor, hun.....your health is nothing to mess around with......I have done the appendix and the gallbladder and not missing them....took me awhile to pay them off, a long while, but the hospital is usually pretty good about working with you on that. Will pray that it IS something simple....but do get it checked out right away....if it is the gallbladder....well, my mother in law had hers burst on a trip to New Zealand......and that is much more painful, difficult and expensive to treat......so as we have ordered Betty around....
hand on hip and shaking a finger....get you off to the doctor at once....Please....and sending a big....gentle hug!
anjl - it made me tear up to read your story. 2 of my 3 teenagers are my stepdaughters...and I have done so much for them....and they appreciate nothing. A big house, piano-dance-etc lessons, been there when sick, hugs goodnight, the works... Nothing has ever been good enough for them and I'm at the point where I've given up. I'm sad but it's the only way I can cope with their disrespectful behavior. I'm not even planning a vacation this year because on all the vacations I've taken them on (Disney, Washington DC, Red River NM -snow, etc) they have complained about something or another....and that is aggravating when you've spent so much money and time to try to have some fun. It's nice to know that you can be good to someone and that it can be appreciated. (It isn't all the girls fault...their crazy Mom tells them how to treat me, she has limited supervised visitation but has quite the hold over them). Anyway it makes me think that one day...they may realize "who" was there for them all these years. But then maybe not so I shouldn't set myself up for that.
Betty - we planted lemon thyme & loved it but I think in a "too sunny and too hot" area...unfortunately...it flourished, then just browned and died over a time. I think I'll try it again this year in part shade. It took off initially when planted near the pool's flagstone, and a rock area....and we were hoping it would eventually drape over the pool. It's smell was delightful. Also a caraway thyme. I had tried an herb garden. My main error I think was that most the herbs needed mounding? (drainage), I had sunk them in the ground too far. I thought I had killed the marjoram but lo and behold....it's coming back right now....and my greek oregano is going stronger than ever...thought I had killed that at one point as well.....
Wonder - we got the kids Rock Band 2 with PS3 for Christmas and guess what - I am enjoying playing it just as much as they are! Really!
I love the garden art! I wish I was as crafty as you all are. Much as I love Grandma's quilts, I know it is not something I have the patience for.
Fairy - I am glad that you quit your job. Last Tuesday my company laid off 1,850 people....and 8 in my city. The managers now treat us with a manner I compared today to Hazing (Thank you sir may I have another) (
well - it cut off the rest of my post...but I was basically saying that I "Lived to work" for too long...I am now "Working to Live". My DH, kids, family, friends come first....
fairy, I must have missed your post :( jut went lookin for it and couldnt find it.... I must be tired! lol!
my boss fired me when I went out on disability for the surgeries. He actually did me a great favor! LOL! I hated working for someone who was mean and vindictive and manipulating his staff.... as office manager it put me in a bad space, stuck between staff and the boss/owner. soooo glad he fired me :o) I have been on disability since sept, but looking forward to getting another job as soon as my doc releases me to go back to work. too much time on my hands these days! lol!
until then, I'll just work in my garden and start doing some garden art and fairy structures to sell :o)
4004 (cant remeber your name! grr!)
dont give up on those girls! I have a similar situation with my own step children (4 of them) mom tells them they should hate me, etc, etc....but I just tell them I will always love you no matter what you do! and there is nothing they can do to make me stop loving them...and OH how they have tried! lolol! 2 of them have come around and realize that their mom is really sick and no longer have much to do with her. The oldest hates me, moved out and wont even come over for christmas :( and the youngest (15 yo) used to hate me, but now she is coming around. she's the one that I keep telling there is nothing you can do to make me stop loving and caring about you. "I CHOOSE to love you cuz you are lovable and cute and smart! and there is nothin you or anyone else can do to change that!" LOLOL! her older siblings are now telling her how sick their mom is (mentally) and I refuse to say anything mean about their mom at all... I just tell them that I dont know her, so how can I hate her! lol! so she is starting to realize for herself that I will always be there, and her mom is there, but only conditionally! Grrrr!
I finished up the patio today, still need to transplant the thyme but will do that tomorrow. Today I basically scrubbed a 3 inch layer of mud off the stones and made sure they were all set in place really good. The clay like soil that I used to set them should pretty much act like a mortar! LOL! once that dirt dries, those stones arent going anywhere!
1/4 of 'Mount Bailey' (my DH left a huge pile of dirt in my garden two yrs ago.... I planted plants on top of it last year! LOL!) is now gone. hoping to get the rest of it moved to the front yard this weekend. First I have to transplant all the plants to the new beds... lots to do and only a few weeks left til I have to go back to work :( at least I will only work part time, so I can still enjoy my gardening time :o)
Night all....... will definitely post a pix of the patio tomorrow.
AnjL
Morning, so much I'd like to post but will wait till I arrive at the office...
Drats, with the quilt blocks I had left over thought I'd make Darlene's kitties each a blankie..made the first and band my machine went dead...packing it up this a.m. in hopes to find a dealership in Barrie who can do repairs..won't be cheap..thats when one wishes they didn't have a top end unit...oh well, guess no sewing for awhile unless I borrow DIL's machine..lol
Looks like a clear day out there...IF I find a delearship I'll take my own vehicle..maybe I should do that anyway so I don't sit in the car getting Suzanne's flu germs...yuk..
Best get dressed...
Stormy/stormy here..got half way here and you couldn't see where you were going...
I think I already know my Best/Worse and What did I learn today and it's only 9:30..
I brought my sewing machine in, looked in the telephone book as I knew there was a sewing center about 6 miles from here..waited patienty until 9:00 am... called and was told there is a 3 to 4 week wait for repairs..now that didn't impress me BUT if I paid $25.00 emergency fee then it could be done within several day..ok I'll do that ..she tells me they've now moved to a new location..hey right next to Tim Hortons a block away..Paul is in the office so he told me to run and do my errand..get there with machine in hand, she takes it and says there is an estimate fee of $25.00 + taxes..
Well I left the office without my wallet..she says I'll set the machine down and when you return with the $25+tax we'll have a look...told her I would come over at lunch and give her the money, she said she'd set the machine aside and would look at it once they get the money..policy it is..I said, hello there, wouldn't you think the $3,000. machine would be enough for me to come back later and if I don't, you have the machine..
not good enough, won't look at it till I pay..so I came back to get my wallet back out I went and paid the amount..she said she was sorry but policy is policy..I simply said POLICY could be, if you don't pay the estimate fee YOU DO NOT get your machine back...must tell you I'm more than annoyed...people and policies..yes, some make sense, and no, at times they make absolutely NO SENSE! can you tell I'm annoyed...
Best...sewing store right next door to office
Worse...perhaps a 3 or 4 week waiting period
What did I learn...some policies just don't make sense..
Better go have a caffein fix..thank goodness I don't smoke or I'd have a package gone by now..lol
Congratulations to both you Deborah,Carol and Judy for your efforts in non-smoking...
Be back when I calm down..
