Good morning. From down in Sunny (yes) Warm( NOT) Northeast Florida. Well it looks like the last of my garden plants will die tonight. We will have a 6+hour hard freeze tonight. The weather people think it will be a record low. Oh well will just have to replant!!!! New Plants!!!!!!
Just noticed a change to the bottom of the DG page. No more links for Landscaping.com or Pixamo. Is that recent?
Well my epis are in their house with a heater and lights on, so they should be ok. But the rest are in the ground or in large pots that I can not move. We have not had a hard freeze in a long time and back then I did not grow things in pots, I will go out later and water then cover the Amaryllis that are in the grown. I am on the east side of the river , also near a couple of creeks and on a small hill(more like a bump) so we will stay a little warmer than the other areas. Will keep my fingers crossed
Anyone wondering why Michael Phelps seems to be getting a pass on his 'youthful' mistake?? I know I am. Rich and famous people, including athletes, always get special treatment, but this seems to be even more than normal. One of the companies he endorses called it a 'non-issue'. And this is not the first time he has gotten in trouble. He had a drunk driving conviction a few years back. He promised 'never again' back then. Oh well.
If I did what Britney Spears did, I would be convicted and in jail. 2 DWI in NH to get your license back is a minimum of 7 days in rehab. Now the DWI laws have gotten sticter and the 2nd DWI is a mandatory 1 week in jail. If you have a job then they might let you do weekends behind bars and then the other week in rehab.
I have 2 friends that have gotten dwi's, the last one its going to cost him approx 10 grand befrore its all done.
Not so sure it is special treatment. He could be charged if they can prove he actually smoked but that may be difficult to do. Any other college kid in that room who may have made a similar mistake didn't get their pic plastered all over the news either. He gets contracts for his swimming accomplishments which were substantial and so has a higher standard and responsibility to make a good impression and set an example. Making a stupid mistake that is not so unusual for his age group should not destroy the rest of his life. He should apologize which he has done and make an effort to teach others that it was a mistake that could, in other situations, really do damage to him or someone else. No one is perfect, I know I am not. The test should be if he turns this into a positive for others as well as himself.
schickenlady my "gh" is more like a shade house with a roof, I wrapped it in plastic for the winter. I will have it fixed better for next winter. It stayed roughly 10 degrees or more above the outside air before I added the heater and the 3 lights. I placed most of the plants on the middle and upper shelves so they are in the warmer zone.
Accuweather.com has the low in my zone to night 24 degrees so the epi house plants should be ok.
Any way I will keep my fingers crossed.
Not that I make it a habit to comment in these veins, but .......
Why are we even focusing on that when everyone's 401K tanked and no one is in jail?
Ruining your own health privately is one thing, but what about those who destroyed the lives of hundreds, if not hundreds of thousands of others? Let 'em stay in their penthouses?? Or, worse yet ... do nothing AND pay them bonuses with bailout monies?
There is has never been any logic in the process .... only who profits the most, and how.
All fingers and toes double crossed for your babies wren.
Off topic - Its a car, its a boat, its a plane! 140 grand will buy you one. We are getting into the George Jetsons era. This is too cool. They just had it on TV, on the road and then the air and then landed it in the water. They just did the 1st test run. 400 of these have been ordered so far. Too cool.

Well I don't think it's either / or, Willie. And there is no comparison between the attention the two are getting. My only point was that I was surprised at how little attention this incident was getting and, more importantly, how differently he is being treated. I figured that subject is quite a bit 'lighter' than any discussion about the financial mess, but maybe I was wrong so maybe we should drop it.
Victor for President!!
^_^
(Oh wait, I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy!!)
Hee hee - shoot first!
I only shoot with cameras! :)
What did you think I meant?!
Catananche caerulea??
victor i do not think what phelps was caught doing should be blown out of proportion - there was a president recently that also got a walk and made a joke out it.
kids in general have a higher level of responsibility than my generation did. there was a kid locally that had a house party and the next day he is in front of the judge. no one was hurt if you don"t count the hangovers. that stuff happened all the time without the courts and media blitz when i grew up. now they lose athletic privileges, suspended, and get hit with community service as well being on the nightly news.
Of course if you know some one with a drug problem like heroin, they seem to be ignored by everyone including the authorities - does not make sense.
I agree, Bill, but that's just the point. You said these days they lose privileges, get suspended, etc. Seems none of that is on tap for him. The anti-doping committee recently announced a get-tough, zero-tolerance policy. If it's enforced, he's out. If it's not, why not? The rule may be too harsh or whatever - I'm not saying one way or another. I just don't believe in selective enforcement.
Remember Michael Vick? As soon as the allegations came out, he lost endorsements and I believe was suspended by the team before any investigation was even done. Now we know that all turned out to be true, but it was okay to jump the gun with him. In this case, it's not an allegation. It's a fact that he admitted to.
I think the common thread is "responsibility." People have to accept responsibility for their actions and accept the consequences.
Personally, I would love to be in a job where I could totally screw up and the consequences would be multi-million dollar bonuses and jaunts to resorts to "regenerate" for the upcoming year! (What am I thinking????? - of course, it would have to be a job where my screwing up wouldn't devastate the life plans/goals of millions of hard-working folks.)
Absolutely - responsibility and accountability. Can never have too much of either. Unfortunately, we are sorely lacking there. From government, businesses and individuals. Much of this financial mess we are in was caused by individuals making irresponsible choices and living beyond their means. Same for companies and government.
You know . . . . it's so wierd . . . . for years my husband and I couldn't figure out how people managed to have to have soooooo much stuff - big house, new furniture, new cars, great clothes, kids in all the extra curricular activities, trips abroad.
Surely, we must have been doing something wrong . . . . why, we didn't even have a complete matching towel set until we were married 26 years! How did everyone else manage? We were scrimping every month to make sure all our bills were paid, including the credit cards - we never carried a balance. And we never leveraged the family home for investment purposes, or refinanced the home to buy a lifestyle. And we have always done this living on one income - first DH and now me.
But now . . . . no real concern about being able to afford the house, no bills hanging over our heads . . . of course, because we are not risk-takers, there is no great personal fortune either.
Yep - us too. I was 'dumb' enough to save money, pay 20% and get a normal mortgage. I still have no big-screen tv. My kids have no $500 video games. No $150 shoes. Never carried a balance on my credit card. Only have ONE credit card. Never...
But Michaela, dear, didn't they send you those checks for $10,000 no interest until 2010 (unless you are late on one payment then interest goes up to 25%). That's the American way!
Ditto, to what Victor said, and in addition - kids had paper routes, they started doing their own laundry at age 9. None of them have to have 'IT' now, thankfully. We saved for things or didn't get them. We can't imagine what the average credit card debt is for people. We can't understand how a house can be purchased with NOTHING down. I'm sure we all could go on and on.
You got it, Sherrie! If there weren't more than money, I would be depressed instead of happy.
no crazy financing here either - and no balances - BUT within the last couple years went for the HD 46" wide screen and now see that the 52" is less than paid for the 46" and we are tempted to move the 46" upstairs and get that 52"er- lol - once you go wide you never go ..........
naa - we will wait a few years till the economy is back for that upgrade.
