Coffee break 3 "Oh Mr. Groundhog....we need to talk!"

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I think that very often the funniest ads are remembered but the product is not.

After we finish shaving down February, let's move on January!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I don't really watch football anymore but on a more important note, both the men women Huskies basketball teams won as I 've been posting. This means the men will join the women as the two number 1 teams in the country!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

So this means the guys are finally as good as the gals, correct? ^_^

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

absolutely.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

heeheeheee ^_^

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

No problem admitting that here. The women's team is more successful, they get better grades, never get in trouble and, in my opinion, execute the fundamentals of basketball better

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Glad we can all agree!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I only know that the women's basketball team at UConn was so successful because a colleague followed them religiously. He loved the team!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

People always ask me if I played bball, cuz I'm tall, but the answer is NO. When I was in high school, we didn't have any girls' teams and besides that we played girls' rules in gym, which made no sense to me. Anybody else remember this? One girl was a 'rover, so she got to go anywhere on the court. There were 2 forwards and 2 guards and they had to stay on their respective sides of the court. You also could only dribble 3 times before you HAD to pass. I hated it.
When the boys were growing up, we loved to watch college bball. They never watched much football, though. Now, it is very rare that we watch a sporting event unless we are in mom's room. She loves baseball and golf. LOL

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I remember.
I also remember not being allowed play baseball with a hardball; softballs only. Weird.

Atkinson, NH(Zone 5a)

Haven't seen any Groundhogs around here for close to two wears now. Ever since I Deported Woody " Old Female who lived under our porch for several years" to many babies they all got deported to.

Never saw her on Groundhog day either so had no indicator as to spring just have to wait and see.

Jan Your rules were better than our rules. No rover--3 players on each side of the line, a dribble of 2 bounces, started with one. The worst thing, if you were fouled--the forward got to shoot it, they might miss. I finished up playing guard, figuring that everyone wanted to play forward, so you got more playing time. Also found that it was as much fun messing someone up as scoring points. Todays rules are better.

The only girls team we had in high school was field hockey. No girls in little league. We were supposed to be thrilled watching the boys have all the fun.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

It is amazing the transition that has occurred in girls/women sports. Girls have opportunities they never had. Last night I watched the high school girl's game between the town I live in vs the neighboring town. It was actually on commercial television..
Uconn women's basketball is a wonderful story. The young women are great ambassadors for the game and role models for kids. Something which is not always the case for college men's sports. They also stay in school for 4 years and graduate. the only problem is they still make about 1/10 the money in the professional league that men make.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I'm sorry, Dave but IMHO - the guys still look better in shorts - hence the pay discrepancy.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Whatever turns you on. But those basketball "shorts" have gotten awfully long.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

They are long. If you see pics from years ago they seem so short and tight.
UCONN girls' team is an inspiration.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Ouch, I remember field hockey!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

well I feel sad . . . . It's bright and sunny and I want to start lots and lots of plants - and we are going away this summer. rats. I think I am suffering from propogation withdrawl.

Is there a cure?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Kudos to those of you who love women's basketball! Me too.

Some of the UConn women tend to land on the Connecticut Sun after college hoops, don't they?

And yes, Mr. Groundhog, you better behave!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I have a cure for you, Michaela, you can propagate them and then send them to me. :))) LOL

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I would you know . . . except I have to save every penny to afford to the trip to the west coast.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Seandor, you can propogate for free.

Magnolia, you are correct. They always had Nykesha Sales but recently the CT Sun's management got smarter and now they have 3 or 4.

Thomaston, CT

I've been an ardent watcher of both UCONN teams for years--then our son decided to go there---he actually got a job ushering at the girls' games--he's no fool! I also played basketball under the old rules----I hated it, but had to play something, so as not to be bored---my studies did that! I'm surprised I graduated on time---but I had an old-fashioned father who was paying the tution, so I buckled down, & graduated.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Things are looking very good for 'Gopher Day'. I was out earlier twirling dahlia stakes and thinking cloudy thoughts and now more clouds are rolling in.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

My favorite Wisconsin basketball player Jolene Anderson was drafted and played for the Sun for most of last season....well until Thibault let her go in late in the season. I followed that team all summer and it was a sad day for me when my star player left the court. I couldn't help but watch a team I had grown to admire, end their season, even without Jolene.

I think taking UCONN players into the Sun program is a good marketing move. It might boost attendance. Swanier was one of the old UCONN draftees and if I am right Jones is another, Jones is a keeper. She and Whalen play great together. Dave47, so do you follow the Sun?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Basketball season is one thing that helps me get through winter. The winters that are long and difficult with piles of snow and you feel snow drifted stuck in the house. Hopefully the old groundhog won't get snowed in, huh? Then what happens?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Winter forever? Immediate spring?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Robin,
Glad to find another fan of UCONN!

Yes Magnolia, Aisha Jones was at Uconn. On that great team that won 2 or 3 championships with Sue Bird, Dianna Taurasi, Swin Cash, Tameka Williams.
I have not really gotten into the Sun. Not sure why, I always mean to catch some games.
College basketball gets me through the winter too.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Oh yeah. Tamika Raymond (formerly Williams) plays for the Sun too. The speed and intensity of the WNBA is amazing when compared to its collegiate counterpart. I could hardly believe it when I went to a game. What a team UCONN had those years.

Dave if you are tied up with gardens all summer like me, that's a good reason to not follow the WNBA.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Yeah, gardening makes it hard. I'll get to a game or two this year.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Stupid rodent - saw his shadow! Six more weeks of winter. Phooey.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Here too....figures. Drat!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Forget the groundhogs. I have forsythia blooming!!! It only took 9 days from the time I brought the branches inside. Mom is happy. She asked me to bring them in. So spring can't be far behind, can it?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I have this problem EVERY YEAR! The forsythia is behind 50ft of snow! I need some closer to the house!

South Hamilton, MA

Knee deep snow between us & the fosythia bushes now so they sit there. Our poor sweet fern near the corner of the driveway & fron walk has snow heeped on it from having the driveway plowed. I can't tell how many brances will be broken.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I knew I should of brought the gun..... lol

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

the ferns here die off to the grown each fall and come back from the root when the snow melts so yours should be ok will come back

South Hamilton, MA

Sweet fern is a woody shrub, not like the regular ferns which do die down.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

just checked all groundhog saw shadows so I guess they cant all be wrong lol but when I think about it six weeks in mid march that is when we always have spring lol
