Coffee break 3 "Oh Mr. Groundhog....we need to talk!"

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Sweet dreams, Scicci!

"death by phone" would go well served up with "eyes stretched sideways".

South Hamilton, MA

Our kichen wall phone is a rotary, we paid for it, why take it out. Great as I grew up with 'number please' and can do fiave & nyan with the best of them.

Now on Google you can track down your friends by phone. You can see what street they are on, let alone city and state. Last week 2 people came and they are so obsessed with texting their friends they were visiting but text for an hour! DH said "you want to come and visit fine. NO texting, if you want to talk to them - Stay home or go visit them"!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

We had an article recently in the paper about a daughter who was looking through her elderly mom's bills and noticed that her mom was RENTING a rotary phone from the phone company for the past 55 years!! Apparently, that rotary phone cost her mom over $4,000.00 AND she still doesn't OWN it!!

How about that for taking advantage of the consumer!

I remember grand mom had one you had to crank to summon the operator.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

that is why I always buy my phones I would never rent one, I also own my hot water tanks since it is silly to pay for it again and again

South Hamilton, MA

Good for your DH. Rudeness is spreading.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

jan - there a services with skype they charge for like calling to a real phone line or cell - it is free PC to PC and it sounds like they got you webcam's to attach to the pc that is still free. my customer i use to call 3-4 times a week gave me several webcams that i never bothered to install - to see grand kids take the time to install them it is suppose to be easy.

victor sounds like your dad has a good sense of humor and you are a chip off the old block!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Bill. He does.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

no that's a lot of girls!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Thanks, Bill, that will make it more appealing to DH. He hates to spend money. In designing the kitchen cabinets, he is even drawing out each sheet of wood, to minimize waste. That also is the reason he has put off installing the SKYPE. Plus he is making some stage sections for his school. 8 sections- 2x2x4 then a couple of 1x1x4 to be steps. That way they can be configured however they need them. Plus we have some framing jobs to do. Plus all his preparation for 6 classes. We got in the framing business to frame some of his drawings and also to have something for when he retires. Last summer he made a 3-section built-in wall unit ( but it can be removed if they move) for a lady with lighting installed. It is beautiful, but it pained him to paint it. He really likes wood grains. Well, that got involved. Sorry. :)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

jan that sounds like he does nice work - and i agree with him on the wood grain - either stain it or polyurethane

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Thanks, Bill. I think he does, That's why I'm anxious to get the kitchen done.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I love wood! Have no carpentry skills at all. Jan, he can make something for me if he's ever free!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

What a lost art .... I love working with wood.

WNY has a ton of old homes (Victorian) just falling apart, but the woodwork inside them is most stellar ..... Good thing, now, is that you can buy one for like $20,000 to fix up. Of course, you have to live in that neighborhood .....

Does anyone believe in craftsman(or woman)ship any more? (Besides Jan's DH)

Is craftspersonship a word yet?

We have a company here, a part of the Re-Use program, who go around salvaging all this wood-, stone- and ironwork from old homes before they are razed .... They provide youth with learning ops, too.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Victor, you can get in line after me. LOL. Next big thing is the kitchen. We bought some equipment and some moulding from a frame shop that was going out of business, and also some moulding and a corner-joiner from a woman whose husband did framing. She has been referring people to us. So far it has been word-of-mouth, cuz of his teaching. He actually prefers to mill his own moulding. I do some of the decorative finishing, if it's not stained wood.
Needless to say, he hasn't had time to do any drawing. He likes to do masted ships with all the rigging. Very detailed. Since one of our sons went to the USCGA, Jeff did one of the Coast Guard ship 'Eagle'. The original is actually hanging on board the ship up in the officers' area. Our son presented it to the captain and we were able to go on board and see it hanging, when the ship was down at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. That was pretty cool!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

We'd love to find sources of wood like that. Someday we would like to move away from the I-95 corridor and build a place or renovate. But, I'd like to enjoy my new kitchen first. LOL. I am sooooo excited.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i have renovated and old dutch colonial that had fantastic moldings and floors - labor of love stripping and polyurethaning room by room.
i only have basic carpentry skills - i make birdhouses in the winter - need to add that to the hobby list! in some of my pic post there are round b-houses that i made without plans - i have 5 up in the yard and one in the basement ready to go up this spring.
i use only rough pine that i buy from a mill that took down 70 100" white pine for me when we bought the house. i joke to them i'm buying my trees back a few boards at a time.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Funny, Bill!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

MY DD did wood working. I was his helper. He did some great work, we still have some of it. My DB has the boat that my DD built. Good wood is hard to find. Fingers are still cold and slow this morning

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Yep, you paid to take it down and then are paying to buy it back. Yikes! I'm sure they love to see you coming.

Wren, hope your fingers thaw out. How did you fare last night with the cold?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

funny story - in shop class in high school they would give us only some much wood to work with - my best friend built a corner cabinet. years later when he got married i was helping him move some furniture out of his parents house.

when we pulled the cabinet out to move it, on the back written in pencil was my name - we would all write our names on our wood to identify it - he had stolen my wood to finish teh cabinet!

I noticed this first and told him he couldn't have the cabinet - he looks at me and asks why? - told him it was mine because my name was on it!! we got a good laugh out of that!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hey, I agree with you. Should be in your house. LOL I bet you were wondering where the rest of yours went.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

good one, Bill!

Thomaston, CT

Wow--sneaky friend! Years ago -, my stepdaughter & her hubby were living in Queens--they had my DH make them a bookcase, & we had to haul it to Queens on top of our station wagon--it wasn't even that great a bookcase! I must admit we did buy a 42" plasma TV--but it was birthday, Christmas, & everything else gift rolled into one---love the UCONN games on it.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yeah that was a classic - my buddies mother nearly wet herself - i kept it up for a while asking him to come clean and tell the truth that i had built the cabinet.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

things always have a way of coming back at you hahah

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Darn lost everything I just typed.

Lost a few more plants last night but the epi house was in the upper 30's this morning. I filled up all the buckets and put another light bulb out there. Left them and the heater on, hope it warms up out there and the heat holds as it will be colder the next two night. It is only 45 outside.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

YA! about the epis. Sorry about the other plants though :(
