I agree completely! always refreshing, it's as if it's teasing you for what's to come...later.

Yes and knowing the weather will return to UCK that rare day is all the more appreciated.
I forgot about those Bermuda Hight that sneak up here for a few days.
I could sure use one this week.

Well maybe some small bit of good news as the temp is not cooperating, the long range forecast is calling for a long extended warming trend for Feb. That also probably means more rain and snow. How accurate they are remains to be seen, but a nice little warm spell would be a good thing since a Jan. thaw is not looking good this year.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the report ngam. I lost teh Farmers Almanack one someone posted last fall.

I have opened up the doors on nicer days. Burnt almost 3 cords so far. Wood was free so crank it up and open it up ! Have I lugged 3 cords? geeze!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Living in a glass house means that every once in a while, during the winter, on a most sunny day, I HAVE to open the doors and windows of the house to "cool it down."

The crisp, cool air is a nice change in the house. Though, with the greenhouse open to the house, the air is usually pretty "fresh," so much so that folk comment on the air quality in the house as just that, fresh!

Could be all the humidity in the air, too ..... most around here have forced hot air.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Oh, to open windows, that sounds great! Willie, to have fresh air all the time sounds refreshing!
Redchic, why can't you open windows at night? Cuz of critters?
I'm liking the longer amount of light. Getting antsy to get dirty. LOL

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

oh yes to get down and dirty is a big part of gardening for me hubby always laughs at me and says that he know how hard I worked in the garden by how much dirt is on my forehead from wiping of the sweat. hahah

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

If you call people critters, then yes, because of the critters! very large ones. lol

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Best dirt for this time of year is coleus cuttings
This is my plot, only onet tray but its mine.

Holycow RC.
I had no idea. The pictures you take make your space look so remote.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

it is remote, but that's what makes it an easier target. I don't worry about it too much. But the folks in valley definitely do. I'll sleep with my windows open, but always with a dowl in the track.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

You're going to have some really pretty coleus this year Jo Ann!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I have a hefty order with RosyDawn too.
These were three of my faves.
Glory(bright gerrn w/spots)
Mahogony Giant (green w/ purple chrevron) a sport I believe
Watermelon
I didnt expect to be successful with these but its almost Feb and they are doing great now for the next4 months.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Sorry, to hear about the 2-legged critters. Baseball bat, handy?
Woohoo on the coleus! I killed some geraniums I had taken cuttings of. Maybe mom's granddaughter will get another one for her this year. They were doing fine, until I moved them in to mom's room.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Jan don't know if you ever heard this but you can over winter annual geraniums by taking them out of their pots, shaking off the soil and hang them upside down in a cool dark place. Re-pot in spring after all chance frost is past. They will get bigger every year. Old gardener told me this a long time ago and I tried it, sure enough those suckers come back to life. So if you get some new ones maybe give it a try.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

that is the reason I have a dog so he will let me know if someone is around since the way my house is set on the lot people come up the drive way and we do not hear anything until the bell rings but since way got the dog its amazing he knows as soon as someone turns in so I am proud of him good little boy with big teeth jack russel

Auntie is 86 ? and she just sticks the entire pot (of Geraniums) down in the basement. She leaves for Florida at the first of Nov. so thats when they go down, she brings them back up in April when she comes home. DH went down in her basement to check the pipes in Dec., the darn things were blooming!!!!

Yep, definitely a bat:-p There was a case last year in Eugene, where a guy got caught by the homeowner while breaking into his house. Guy breaking in had a knife, the homeowner shot him in the leg. Then knocked the intruder around some. The intruder brought charges against the homeowner, saying it was excessive and caused him permanent damage. I just about fell over when I read that in the paper. All tht I could think of was: Good!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I agree completely Scicci. Your jack there is a good guy with a big bark i'm sure. He's cute.... when his teeth aren't showing.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

actually that is him smiling hahahhahah

and my geranium are blooming in the family room and the laundry room the coolest rooms in the house they look healthier than they did in the summer lol I hope since they are bigger now I usually do not bring them in but I paid so much money and they are the large bloom fancy ones so in they came

also took in double impatience six of them put three per pot and in they came I cut them to the grown and let them grow again to no worry about bugs and they look like blooms are coming soon

HMMM... would a crawl space be too cold, do you think? Our basement is too warm, I think. Maybe I can salvage the main one after all. I will try.

LOL too excessive - imagine that. He's lucky he was shot in the leg, and the owner wasn't aiming higher.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

a man in ontario canada went to jail for shooting a burglar, after the burglar beet him out cold he came to found his gun and shot him, in court they said he was not in danger when he went to get the gun that he should have just left the house that he did not need to shoot the guy, so the burglar had all charges dropped and the home owner went to jail for 18 months the funny thing is the owner was 70 years old and the burglar was 26 well that does not seem right to me

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

I put mine in unfinished unheated end of cellar, so a crawl space would be about the same I think as long as it is above freezing. I hope it works for you. Good luck.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

my dormant plants sit in the stairwell from the unfinished basement to the door into the garage it is just above freezing in that area works good have a fig tree lots of dahlias and also callas tuber rose also peacock orchids, begonias, brugs, banana tree, etc.....
to many more boxes and boxes of stuff

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

scicci ....that case was just wrong in so many ways!!!

Jan. That's what I thought. That he was lucky that the guy went for a leg. I bet that the homeowner had secong thoughts about going for the leg in hindsight!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

well if someone came into my home in the middle of the night I would make sure they went out in a bag I have a 9 and 10 year old girls in the house I would never take a chance that the guy would get to them so its the box for him

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I always knew that we would get along Scicci!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

hahahah raised on a farm on the east coast the saying goes anyone can have a place to sleep if they ask but if they take without asking it means trouble hahahha

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

That sounds absolutely perfect to me!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

so in zone 7 so you have at this time ?????? are crocuses croaking

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Hey, Shelly, that's too bad you have to worry about people coming in your windows if you have them open. I think I would be putting bars over them if that were the case so I could enjoy having them open.

Willie, that sounds about right for your air to be fresh with your greenhouse open to the house, what with the combination of all the plants generating so much oxygen and the humidity. My place gets so dry.

Jo Ann, I have been successful so far with my coleus cuttings here, too. I still have them in water on my kitchen windowsill, and they are doing well. I need to put them in pots.

Pat, I will have to try that with geraniums next year. I never knew that. I have a cool, dark cellar where I can keep them.

Celeste, did your Auntie water those geraniums after putting them in the cellar in the pots? Do you have to do it before frost hits them?

At our office at work we have had some pots of impatiens blooming since summer. They are still looking great!

Mona, that is awful about that older man going to jail for shooting the burglar. I have heard stories like that. Seems you can't even protect your own property. Criminals often have more rights than victims.

That is sure a nice thought Scicci!

I've had snow (not nearly the amount that some of you have) and lows averaging around 15 and highs around 35 deg.from the second week in dec. through the first week in Jan. Then from there up until last night ,when I got snow again, it's been frost like in the last picture that I posted. Although, a couple of days were in the low 40's! My Hellebores having been trying to bloom without success as have the witch hazels. The buds on my camellias froze off. But, I'm not complaining because I like it much better than your weather! Sorry. :-/

However, in Eugene (1000' lower) , which is where I have been getting all the pictures of things in bloom, Witch hazels and hellebores are opening up all over the place, but still probably a month off for early spring bulbs. Their greenery is just starting to peek up above the ground! So, I know that they're certainly trying!

Karen, it's fully my intent to someday have bars or something like that, someday, so that I can have the windows wide open at night.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

in canada they have always had all the right the victims dont seem to matter

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

It's often like that here, too, Mona. There was a movie that really brought that to light called The Star Chamber with Michael Douglas. Very good movie.

Karen

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Karen, no one waters them or anything...it's down right strange! But, she's been doing it for years!!!!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Karen I dont root in water.
I bought a seed starter tray and some seed starter soil at HD.
I just take the cutting stick a pencil in the soil and put the stem in give it a gentle touch and water.
Next time I do this I will use bigger starter pots. I have to stager the cuttings so they wont crowd the peat seed starters are only1 inch square.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I'll have to try that next fall with the geraniums.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the info on the geraniums Celeste and Jo Ann. I will continue to root mine in water, as I've had such success doing it that way. I should be transferring to pots soon, though.

Karen

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I keep mine in south facing windows and water everyweek I cut them down and bring them in it takes a few weeks and they sprout new leaves that demand less sun and they are very nice at the moment

my sister has a cold room so she stores them and started them up again at the end of march for june bloom
