What have you ordered for spring 2009 - Part II

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

When is it not "extremely cold" up your way? One winter I went to the cottage in Jan and had to take a snowmobile in and out. It was nearly -40. The sound of the branches breaking in the woods was like shot gun blasts. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

mono - i think the greatest hockey played that ever lived came from Parry sound - #4 who wore the spoked B

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

patti - i have reviewed your choices - from MHN you must know what you want since most did not have pics - i have a dryopteris from them and the dicentra gold heart i planted last fall -

for Avant - very nice choices the artic sun cornus sounds really nice - i ordered chardonnay pearls from sooner earlier since they had a larger (more $$) size. the geranium are all nice - the thermopsis sophia is really nice - that might go well with the normal purple i have - i will take my dad who lives in carver on a field trip their in the spring.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, I go up there and pay homage to Bobby and then take a boat ride around Georgian Bay. Lovely area. I had kin in Owen Sound. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thought one of the canucks would know who i was talking about first:) i have relatives up north as well - there is an infestation of us in PEI.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, crossed post. I think I know what I am getting. I never know with ferns. I just hope I didn't get some that will take over my world. I did some research and I do have a great book on ferns, but, alas, it is in Vt at the moment. DUH! I am trying to get all my other thoughts organized on the Wha spreadsheet so I don't over do it. Ha. Patti

South Hamilton, MA

Then there are poor people like me who don't know how to do a spread sheet. No instuctions please, just commenting.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

is the spread sheet excel or hand written - mine was hand written and i'm beginning to wish i had taken the time to get on the pc - i'm finding other sources and making notes - now only i understand what the heck is going on - i think:)

for ferns i cut the bottom out of big plastic container and bury it and plant the ferns inside the container - if they are aggressive they will still break out - this slows them down enough to stop them.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

No, I am doing it on a Microsoft Works spreadsheet after making too many pages of pure scribble I am adding the J.Maples to it slowly. I wish DG would set one up that we could dump thing on. The journal has a very strange entry pattern which I would love to see them change.

current order is:

Common name .... Cultivar...............Genus.............Species
Bear's Breeches....Hollard's Gold... Acanthus.......... mollis

which is useless when cutting and pasting. I would love for them to move the cultivar be after the species. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i have both works and excel and i finally gave up on works since i had no experience with it. i set up one a excel to keep track of what i have - that took about a month - of course it does not include stuff i have no record of so i will take a walk in the yard this year to complete it.
Genus - cultivator/common name - location by bed - how many - h/w at maturity - zone - cost (ouch!!) - where purchased
separate pages for trees, shrubs, plants, hosta, bulbs, conifers - and i will make jm a separate page which will be an easy cut/paste

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, I am happy with having mine on DG except for a few things. I think I don't mind the entry work as long as I keep it up on a regular basis. It would be fun to compare notes at some point. I kind of do the same things as you. I have it divided up with my main plants broken out, like narcissus, tulips, hippeastrum, lilium, hosta, etc. Too Many plants! Patti

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

I have a request, you ladies ( and gents) have beautiful pics of these flowers, and I was wondering if you have pics of the entire bed you could post on this thread? How do you arrange your collections?
I am always interested in how others put together their beds and it would be so beautiful to see them. Not to mention educational. I have a fairly new house and a lot of empty spaces I could use help in defining.

Thomaston, CT

Nice to hear from you, Cyndie---hope you aren't too chilly up there! My stepson has been ice fishing to take his mind off winter! Patti--I also have geranium Sweet Heidi---I love it! Am looking at the Fairweather catalog for JMs, but I got sidetracked by the magnolias--can't figure out where to put another one though.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I agree with Cyndie - I love to see pictures of entire beds and not just individual plants.

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes, Robindog, It is quite chilly up here. ;) But, I am counting the days until I can start seeds.... And in the mean time, if temps come up a little we will go snowshoeing.
We haven't done ice fishing yet, but our neighbors do. We can stay inside for only so long, and then we have to do something!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Cyndie you should start a thread dedicated to your question. A good idea for a thread I think and wouldn't mind seeing whole beds or groupings of plants myself.

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

Okay, since it is sorta off topic of the thread. ;)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i will check and see if i have any full bed pic's and post on a new thread - might be a few days - and my beds are always changing.

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

Here is a link for whole bed pics.
Whatever ya got. It is all inspirational and good for cabin fever.....

man it is fun to visit her always a ball, this past summer we saw kate hudson while she was there visiting her mom, kate had the kids with her

us laid back canadian do not approach or blink at these people maybe that is why they
like it up this way, saw people with cameras and did not even take pics of them

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Posted this on Cyndie's thread as well. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/757117/ It might help with the approaching storm to see what we can look forward to, sooner rather than later I hope.
On the subject of ordering, how are we supposed to stay on a budget and not impulse buy when these wonderful mail order companies send out emails like this? http://www.gardencrossings.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/home.showPage/pageID/106/index.htm

To all of you fighting the battle against the lily beetles, I happen to use Sevin, though I don't like to use chemicals. This year I will be trying a biological control that has spinosad in it. It's a bacterial infection that kills beetles, caterpillars and such, and is supposed to work better than BT (bacillus thuringiensis).

Magnolialover, I have not had the Jap beetles eat all those things here that they are eating at your place. They do like roses here. Another good reason I don't want roses. They happen to like a certain weed, which I don't know the name of, so I leave those weeds in the garden for them to keep them from eating other things here. I have read that milky spore spread on the lawn will kill the grubs, and it's a biological control.

Oh, I ordered a mix of those double lilies. I can't wait to see those beauties bloom!!!!!

I put my name down for that glad and lily co-op. Woo hoo!!!!!

Karen

to get rid of the beetle you need to spray as soon as bugs are active and do it on a regular basis because if you wait to see them and the damage they have already laid eggs and the cycle continues with more beetle to lay more eggs

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

The red lily beetles overwinter as adults in sheltered places, often in the soil or under layers of mulch at the base of lily plants.

Adults emerge from the soil in April and May to begin feeding on lily leaves. About four weeks after emergence, they lay their eggs on the underside of lily leaves. The eggs hatch after seven days. The emerged beetle larvae take about two weeks to grow up and then they drop to the soil to pupate. Two to three weeks after that, the adults emerge, begin feeding again and complete the life cycle. Only one generation is produced in a season.

PredatorsIn parts of mainland Europe the red lily beetle is kept in check by four species of parasitic wasp that attack the larval stage. These have yet to be imported to N.A.

Control

Organic gardeners will usually do several things:

Hand-pick the beetles. Drown them in soapy water (the water has to be soapy so the beetles don’t just swim and crawl out) If you get all the red lily beetles in the early spring when they first emerge from the ground, you’ll not see too many more problems the rest of the summer. If you miss picking them, your lilies will be eaten to the ground.

Use diatomaceous earth. This powder is reputed to work on the red lily beetle by giving it lots of tiny cuts and the insect dies from dehydration.

Neem oil is said to be quite effective when it hits the red lily beetle. Note that it MUST be reapplied regularly as water (dew or rain) will wash it off the leaves.

Soapy water does NOT work – you only have a clean red lily beetle. ^_^

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

yes that is funny give those little buggers a bath why dont you hahhahaha
as soon as I see them I spray and again in a few days for the ones I missed and that is the end of it last summer didnt get many hope I got the ones so this year I will have less

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Pixie, I heard on NPR last summer that there were some testing going on the Cape for controlling the lily beetle with the wasp by a women who was a test site. I found this link and think they should use your garden. I also found another link which mentioned that a site was being studied at Acadia N.Park using the wasp control.Patti http://www.upi.com/Science_News/2008/06/09/Wasp_battles_lily_leaf_beetle/UPI-98551213042793/

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I will admit to having a few lilies Patti.....maybe I should offer them to try out the wasp here after all. It certainly couldn't hurt....unless the wasps didn't work and all my lilies were eaten!!!!

Thomaston, CT

Parasitic wasps are a good control---they took care of the gypsy moths here. I am ordering a few more iris---Cherry Glen, Mexican Moth, & Punchline---they are from Daylily Haven Iris Gardens. Anyone familiar with them?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Familiar with those Iris's or Haven Gardens?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

I am happy to say I had less JB and LB last year. I just hand pick early in the spring and check every am throughout the season. I find that it is a kind of zen type activity to search for them, capture and crush the life out of the little buggers. Very calming and gives me a lot of satisfaction. DH is sure I'm a little nuts as I will tell the little devils what I think of them when they meet their fate. :)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Ha ha ha..you sound like me!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

such happy.... destructive people we are

Simple pleasures.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

joann - i did the same kind of thing as a kid with my brother - we were vaca'ing in maine on a lake for the summer - fishing from the dock in front of the cabin all we caught were hornpout (sp looks like a little catfish) - by end of aug. we were tired of them and started sentencing them to death for various crimes - i decided to punt one i had on my rod - the sharp spine they have on the side of thier head went through my sneaker, sock, and foot.

sent my brother up to get my father and it took to long so i walked up to the cabin and i could here my brother saying for probably teh 5th time "billy has a fish stuck in his foot" and my father saying "what are you talking about"

I walked in with my rod and hooked fish still on the line wobbling around on my foot - my dad's look was priceless - went back to the pond and he pulled it out - on the second try - was a little nervous after he couldn't get it out the first time - really wanted to kick it far i guess - the thing went right through a vien too.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

is that like a foot fetishfish hahahah

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

mona that is pretty good - it is one fish story that my family will never forget

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)
