"feeding" on lily leaves? Reports here are that they mow the lilys in hours but I have many many wasps. This is good news.
What have you ordered for spring 2009 - Part II
The wasp to fight lily beetles is an European one which keeps them in check. I thing the NA waps won't work. With luck they won't get west to you. The beetles I mean
They are here already
Sorry, I didn't realize that. they are quick when you try to catch them--hitched a ride on transphipment of plants?
I hate hate em hate em! lol
Most likely. First sightings/mowings in 2007 and more reports every year.
it's official ... the cow pot co-op is open
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/947848/
I meant the iris themselves, Pixie. Do you, or anyone else, out there grow those varieties? The photos look good, but sometimes are misleading.
so unfair I cant get in on any of the co-ops because im in canada isnt that discrimination to canadians hahahahahhaah
Robin I don't grow any of them sorry....maybe pollyk could help you out.
Thanks, I'll try her.
gues what two of flats have babies coming up so exited lol now if I had marked them I would know what im growing
LOL, Mona. I think I'll have some like that, too.
now today I have to find the will the start two more lol
I cant seem to find energie to do much these days the cold has been around far to long we have had snow now since the first week of november lol it needs to go away soon
we usually dont get snow till almost xmas to me it should be mid march right now
so I hope the groundhog has good new like winter is finally over
We always get snow in Nov.....sometimes in Oct. YUK! The hunters love it when it snow around Nov. 1st, makes tracking the deer easier. I hate it and could care less if I can see deer prints or not!! lol
lol lot of deer prints at my house made sure to let it be known in town that no hunting would be allowed on my property since it use to be an apple orchard we have lots of deer on the property it also helps that we have water in the back so lots of females with younguns I let it be known that I would call the game warden on anyone hunting near or on my property
mona
Our property is long & narrow as are others so no guns can be used. Neighbors friends have a bow & arrow stand in their woods & we let them know that it is ok with us. The deer are overpopulated here so get hungry. Coyotes caught a deer on the trail which crosses the property & our neighbors & I don't think that it is more humane to be killed by the pack.
Yikes! My cousins have a farm in Northern Virginia, in the middle of hunting country, Hunt Clubs, tally-ho and all that. The deer are in the same situation there as everywhere else, no wild land to forage on and too few natural predators. My cousins have a deal with the hunters. When it's hunting season they may hunt on the farm's land (for a certain period or during certain times when no people are around - they are very safe about it) in exchange for half of the venison. It is one solution. i don't care for venison myself.
I wont eat bambi lol never
I love venison. DH had a great venison weinerschizel when we ate at a wonderful restaurant in New Orleans at Christmas called Bayona.
There was an interesting essay done by the late, great author Stephan Jay Gould about how Walt Disney changed the appearance of his original mouse to the Micky Mouse that we now know in order to make him less rat like, thus more lovable. I think deer have that quality too. Who doesn't love Bambi. According to Gould
"When we see a living creature with babyish features, we feel an automatic surge of disarming tenderness."
I see them in my backyard a few times a week they are so elegant and beautifull could never eat or do anything to hurt them last spring had three babies in the back of the property so cute and funny would sneak out with the kids to watch them
I can see them every night of the year in my yard. We just have way too many. I do love them in the woods and the moors, but our island population has no predators so the only culling is by cars and starvation and a short hunting season. They are all covered with ticks that carry Lyme disease.
About 50% of the island is conservation land so we have lots of room for a nice sized herd, but we desperately need some serious birth control and about a third of what we currently have to keep them healthy and be able to garden. One night a few got into an electric fenced field at the big farm here last summer and wiped out the entire strawberry crop for the summer. It was a huge financial loss to the farm and an emotional loss to all those who took their kids to the "pick your own days" as a summer ritual. But again, I do love having them, just not so many. I have left 2/3 of our property to them, but they are abusing my good nature and eating things they aren't suppose to like this year. Patti
No predators? That's not good (ecologically speaking). I just looked it up and read that they were brought to the island. Is that true?
so if they brought them lol hahahahha send them back
Patti, could they sterilize some of them? A few tubal ligations or vasectomies might go a long way - I don't think you can count on a deer to "just say no". But if the gov't is already involved . . .
hahahha just say no that is funny
I had a herd of deer this winter for the first time in a long time--usually they stay away, but there was some snacking in the perennial beds!
tell bambi to go back to the main land swim bambi swim
There is an island in Maine where the deer ticks were so bad they finally removed the deer from the island. Voila! no more tick problems, no more gardens being chewed. I think it was Mohegan Island? Please correct me if I'm wrong...
BTW - just about a month ago I had an 8 point buck browsing my rose bushes in the back yard. He left some fertilizer in payment for his forage....
Well, I guess most of us have our share of deer problems, myself included. I'm fixing to put up an 8 foot deer fence around my property this year too keep them out. I don't want them eating all my daylily buds like they did last year. I'll not get much hybridizing done that way.
I ordered some glads and lilies from the co-op for them going on now. Here is my order. Oh, can't wait for spring!!!!!

I couldn't grow nearly as much without having a nice chunk of the east and south part of our property deer fenced. We put it up 7 years ago. I only know of one breach, but from looking at damage, it appears that the rabbits are the only destructive ones now in that area as they eat holes through the deer fence and pop in to graze on my bulbs or anything else they fancy. We are gradually adding a lower row of rabbit wire to the fence. Maybe that will finally curtail them / Buy until that we finish that chore we will still spray. We have two border collies, but the damage is at night when they are asleep in the house. I need a night watchdog. Good luck.
I added more lilies from that coop too and hosta from another as well as hellebore (mine just got eaten as they are planted outside the deer fence) as well as clematis. Patti
Anyone have these???
http://www.dutchbulbs.com/store/specialtybulbs/73679
I just got this catalog yesterday, with all the negatives in garden watchdog I prob won't order from them but a hardy orchid??? how cool is that???
I have planted a spiranthes--native orchid--twice--the plant was hand-picked by me at Ward's Nursery in Great Barrington, MA. I lost them both, so I'm a little leery of orchids, even native ones. That said, maybe someone has had success with them.
Oh, where? Is there a co-op? I have shade!
Jen, those hardy orchids really sound nice. Wonder how hardy they really are. You and I are on the edge of their hardiness zone.
I have ordered from that company twice last year and didn't have any problems. Oh, well they did send me one plant that was wrong, but they immediately corrected the problem when I called about it and sent me the right one. Only one of the plants I got from them died. Plants were a little on the small side, but they did well.
I got the hosta White Feather from them, and I really like that. I also an Asiatic Lily called Centerfold, which bloomed really well for me, and an oriental lily called Lovely Girl, which also bloomed very well. I got the Oranges and Lemons gaillardia, and that bloomed it's head off. I also got 2 of the Limerock Ruby coreopsis, and both were just covered with blooms last year. I got 2 daylilies when they had the buy one get one for a penny sale, and one of them even bloomed. And I got 3 astrantias from them. One of those was the plant that died. The others haven't amounted to much yet. Hopefully they will be much bigger this year.
Jo Ann, I love the hardy cyclamens. I tired growing them twice, though, and both times I lost them. Maybe I will try one more time, but three strikes and they are outta there!!!!!
Thanks for wishing me luck on keeping the deer out of my place, Patti. I need all the luck I can get. I will not be able to fence the entire property, as there is a long section along the road that I can't do, partly because it just wouldn't look good, and partly because we have 2 driveways there, as well. I will just have to keep up on spraying the front area with that stuff that acts as a barrier that will prevent (hopefully) them from crossing over.
Karen
Karen !! I have my fingers crossed for the cyclamen. If they dont bloom at least the rest of the plant is great.
There are a few DG'rs who havnt had luck with them but I'm going to try. Its only money.
The negatives for your website are correct, small plants and some dont thrive, that was my experience.
